Community News Update
Tuesday, April 19, 2022
Message from Mayor Lake
It’s been an enjoyable week in Cumberland as we
wrap up Youth Week activities, which are organised
by young people for young people and celebrated
right across the country. I’m so proud that Council
can provide opportunities for youth led events
of this nature, to share ideas, attend live events,
showcase talents and have young voices heard. This week saw Council
collaborating with Auburn Youth Centre to host The World Traditional
Games, which gave young people the opportunity to get active and
experience sports from other cultures. Westarz Nite at Granville Town
Hall celebrated the musical talents of young people in Cumberland
and was hosted by our Youth volunteers.
It was great to see what our young community members can achieve
when given the pathways to do it and opportunities to actively
participate in these events.
Later this week, Council will be hosting the Ramadan Street Food
Festival, which is set to light up our Auburn Town Centre. This will be
a wonderful opportunity for us all to gather with loved ones, savour
an exotic array of delicious cuisines and share in the Ramadan spirit
of peace and kindness. I encourage everyone to round up the family
and head to Auburn this Saturday for this family friendly event.
A reminder that the registration of interest for the WestInvest
Community Project Grants closes this week. This competitive round
of funding will provide $1.6 billion dollars to help new and improved
community facilities and local infrastructure across Western Sydney.
I encourage all non-government organisations, charitable organisations,
community groups and other organisations to take advantage of this
grant, check your eligibility and register your interest by completing
the Registration of Interest Form (ROI) before 5pm, this Thursday
21 April 2022. For guidance around the eligibility or application
process, you can also call the Grants Team on 8757 9000 or visit
Lastly, we will be observing ANZAC Day on 25 April, which marks
the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian
and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Council is aware
of the various ANZAC Day Dawn Services across Cumberland listed
below and I encourage you to attend one of these services, where we
will commemorate the service men and women who fought so bravely
for our freedom in this great country and to pay tribute to our fallen
heroes as a community. Let us honour their legacy. They shall never
be forgotten.
Lest We Forget: ANZAC Day
services to be held across city
ELLIE BUSBY
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Donna
Davis with local veterans.
Locals are encouraged to “embrace
the ANZAC spirit” by attending a
local service this ANZAC Day.
On Monday, April 25, members of the
community will be able to attend and
commemorate ANZAC Day at multiple
events across western Sydney.
Although still mindful of COVID,
Merrylands RSL are looking forward to
getting back to a “normal” service.
“We’re treating it like a normal Dawn
Service, [like the one that was] done in
2019,” Merrylands RSL Group Marketing
Manager Jane Smith said.
“Before the Dawn Service, we have a
march starting at 5am outside Merrylands
RSL, then finishing at Charles
Mance [Reserve] at 5.30am for an hour
Dawn Service. After the service, it’s back
to the Merrylands RSL for a full complimentary
hot breakfast.”
Merrylands RSL will also honour the
80th anniversary of the Bombing of
Darwin, sinking of the HMAS Perth and
Battle of the Coral Sea. Alongside the
march and Dawn Service, Merrylands
RSL will also hold an ANZAC Sunday
commemorative day.
For one local veteran ANZAC Day will be
even more special, as he stands side-byside
his newly enlisted granddaughter at
a Dawn Service in the City of Parramatta.
Epping RSL sub-Branch president and
veteran, John Curdie OAM, said he was
incredibly proud that his granddaughter
has been inspired to follow in his footsteps
and join the defence force.
“We always attend the Dawn Service
together, but this will be our first now
she is a fully-trained Australian Defence
Force member, and the newest and
youngest member of our Epping RSL sub-
Branch,” Mr Curdie said.
Details of all local ANZAC Day services
can be found online.
LOCAL NEWS
PM’s factory tour questioned
as expected job cuts revealed
ELLIE BUSBY
Labor Candidate for Parramatta
Andrew Charlton has hit back at
Prime Minister Scott Morrison,
after it was revealed the factory where he
made a major job announcement plans
to cut jobs.
Touring the Rheem Australia manufacturing
facility in Rydalmere on Tuesday,
April 12, the Prime Minister was joined by
Liberal Candidate for Parramatta Maria
Kovacic, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and
Senator Marise Payne.
Mr Morrison showed his support for Ms
Kovacic, calling her “the real deal”.
“[Ms Kovacic is] from western Sydney,
she’s run businesses in western Sydney.
She’s raised her family here in western
Sydney. She is western Sydney through
and through,” Mr Morrison said.
“[Ms Kovacic’s] opponent used to work
for Kevin Rudd, I’ve known him for some
time, but he’s not from western Sydney.”
Speaking to the press, Mr Morrison
pledged to create 1.3 million more jobs
over the next five years. Despite this
announcement, it was revealed that the
Rydalmere facility plans to cut local jobs
and move them offshore to Vietnam.
Following Mr Morrison’s visit, Mr
Charlton attended the Rheem facility
on Wednesday, April 13, to talk to local
workers. Mr Charlton, whose father used
to work at the very same Rheem facility,
called Mr Morrison’s appearance at the
facility “particularly sickening.”
“Scott Morrison and Maria Kovacic’s
decision yesterday to trample over the
concerns of local workers at Rheem
facing redundancy was distasteful and
disrespectful,” he said.
“Scott Morrison should immediately
apologise to these workers and return to
this site to explain how he plans to save
local manufacturing jobs.”
In response, Mr Morrison said it was
up to Rheem to outline their future plans
regarding redundancies.
manufacturing facility in Rydalmere
We will always remember them
Next Monday offers us the opportunity
to stop and reflect, and for the first time
since 2019, properly attend Dawn Services
and respective ANZAC Day commemorations.
COVID lockdowns reminded us of just
how valuable our freedoms are.
They are freedoms fought for by so
many Australians in war, many of whom
paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The early alarm going off is a small
price to pay to commemorate those who
served, and to celebrate the lives we enjoy
today.
Parra Matters
alanmascarenhas09@gmail.com
Each year has its rhythms. There’s the
burst of hope and optimism on January
1; resolutions earnestly made then
promptly forgotten, followed by a languid
few weeks of cricket and tennis on the TV.
By February, summer is still here, yet
much of the nation is back at school or
work.
No matter where we are, our worries
start to pile up: complicated projects for
clients, handling a bad boss, managing all
the office politics.
Maybe we simply get bogged down in
paying the bills or helping the kids with
their schoolwork.
Once a pandemic to be feared, COV-
ID has now become normalised and
brought additional routines – watching
for sore throats and sniffles, buying rapid
antigen tests, disappearing for seven days
at a time. Everyone I know seems to have
had it.
This year I tried to hold onto the carefree
spirit of summer for as long as possible.
As March got underway, I often
found myself at the beach in the early
evening after a 2021 spent almost exclusively
at home.
I’ve dipped my feet in polluted seas at
Bondi, and been gobsmacked by churning
swells that reached the promenade
and eroded the beachfront to reveal previously
unfamiliar rocks.
The termination of daylight saving ended
these sorties – meaning the beach will
once again become a stranger for the next
six months.
Like the dipping of the moon, we’ve
now entered a different phase of the year.
In simplest terms, it’s two consecutive
long weekends – Easter and ANZAC Day
– and also school holidays. A chance to
snatch some leave if we can swing it and
maybe create 10 blissful days back-toback.
So, if we’re so inclined, it’s trips to holiday
houses or visits to friends and relatives
on the north and south coasts. It’s
lazy weekends in hideaways like the
Blue Mountains or Orange that we only
remember once a year, but who quickly
reacquaint us with their charms.
It’s camping trips in the southern highlands,
waking up to the early morning
chill and dew all over the tent flaps.
In Parramatta and Cumberland, of
course, it’s the sombre and holy time of
Easter; Ramadan for those of Muslim
faith; Vaisakha in the Hindu calendar;
and this year, also the Jewish Passover.
From earliest civilisations, humans have
worshipped deities and reflected on how
Entertainment .....................13-21
Sport .................................................24
our universe came to be. For many people
in this part of Sydney, religious faith
grounds us and is integral to who we are.
For others, it’s a series of moments
when we check back in.
Reflecting on our traditions and beliefs,
or expressing them in practical ways
through acts of charity, assembling together
for Iftar, patting the back of an old
Digger or quietly sharing a cup of tea in
the church hall.
As the days get shorter, this is also a time
to retreat into comfortable domesticity.
Pulling apart old cupboards and chests
of drawers.
Picking up old sewing projects, patching
holes and darning socks.
Weeding the backyard, pruning plants,
and experimenting with different recipes.
Delving into books we once purchased
but never found the time for.
I’ve set aside the next few days to go
through five years’ worth of personal
papers and make a list of complaints to
strata.
A chance to tune out, to reconnect; perhaps
to pull ourselves together and get
back on track; these weeks are the ultimate
gift.
Whatever you’re doing, enjoy it. See you
next week!
A
$33 million investment in Westfield
Parramatta will see the
introduction of a new ALDI and
full-line Coles supermarkets by late 2022.
Scentre Group announced it will invest
$33 million to “revitalise and enhance”
Westfield Parramatta’s fresh food experience.
An upgraded 7,000 square metre space
on level five will feature a new ALDI, Coles
supermarket, a new large format grocer
and additional specialty retail partners,
which are yet to be announced. The
precinct will reflect a “modern atmosphere”
with exposed concrete, greenery,
as premium finishes for the space.
Scentre Group owns and operates 42
Westfield Living Centres across Australia
and New Zealand, encompassing approximately
12,000 outlets. The group said its
plan is to “create the places more people
choose to come, more often, for longer”.
Scentre Group Regional Centre Experience
Manager Danii Ashton believes the
upgrades will meet the needs of locals.
“What we’re delivering at Westfield
Parramatta is a reinvigorated fresh food
offering curated specifically for our
community,” she said.
and are very proud to be a part of this
“The introduction of ALDI and a full-line
vision to create a convenient destination
that meets the evolving needs of our local
community. We look forward to keeping
our customers updated and announcing
further retail partners as this project
progresses.”
The new Coles will feature everything
from a pet treat bar to a frozen dessert
“The Coles will offer customers an openfront
ClubGRANTS
applications now open
Applications for the Parramatta
ClubGRANTS program are now open,
giving community organisations the chance
to receive a maximum of $10,000 to help fund
their projects and services.
If your local organisation needs a financial boost,
I encourage you to apply for one of these grants.
To be eligible, you must be a not-for-profit
organisation within the Parramatta LGA and
provide one of the following:
• Community welfare or social services
• Community development
• Community health services or employment
assistance activities
• Community or professional sport club
The Parramatta ClubGRANTS program is
sponsored by local clubs and administered by
City of Parramatta Council. Unfortunately,
ClubGRANTS does not fund projects or services
that can be readily assisted by an existing
Government funding program.
Council is delivering short information sessions
Urban Taskforce briefing
Recently the City of Parramatta CEO Brett
Newman and I were invited to attend a meeting
with the Urban Taskforce. As guest speaker,
I used this opportunity to present our Council’s
values with regards to planning.
I also spoke about the importance of strong
leadership, governance and design excellence
in creating productive, sustainable and liveable
places.
As Council addresses the housing needs of
our community, we must value high-quality
design that is not compromised by the market.
I impressed upon them the community’s
expectations and the importance of ensuring
that as Parramatta grows, the integrity of our
built and natural environments, as well as the
physical and social heritage of our City, is
maintained.
LOCAL NEWS
Festival is finally back
Delicious food trucks highlight Ramadan Street Food Festival in Auburn
ELLIE BUSBY
Get into the Ramadan spirit with
a one night only festival that
features a huge line-up of food
trucks and street food stalls.
After the pandemic forced the event into
a two year hiatus, the Ramadan Street
Food Festival will finally return to the
streets of Auburn, running from 6pm to
Midnight on Saturday, April 23, at Auburn
Town Centre.
With a line-up of over 15 food vendors
available, the festival will seek to offer
an authentic Ramadan outdoor dining
experience.
People can expect to sample a diverse
range of foods including classic Turkish
kofte rolls, vegan Egyptian street food,
African fusion food, mini doughnut balls
and more.
Organised by Cumberland City Council
and funded by the NSW Government’s ‘the
Festival of Place Open Streets’ program,
the event will offer free entry to all.
Cumberland City Mayor Lisa Lake
believes the festival will be an opportunity
for people to come together.
“The Ramadan Street Food Festival in
the Auburn Town Centre will be a family
friendly event under the night sky,” she
said.
“It is an opportunity for us all to gather
with loved ones, savour a wonderful array
of delicious cuisines and share in the
Ramadan spirit of peace and kindness.”
Mick Idriss from Dapto Hotdogs is also
looking forward to bringing his muchloved
hotdogs, burgers and chips to the
Ramadan Street Food Festival.
“Being involved in the Ramadan Street
Food Festival is such an honour, seeing
the community come together regardless
of faith,” he said.
“It’s great seeing people from all backgrounds.”
Although Mr Idriss has been a part of
many Ramadan events over the years, this
will be the first time he will brink Dapto
Hotdogs to the festival.
“It hits home because I’m from this
community,” he said.
Mr Idriss said Ramadan is not just about
fasting.
“It’s about giving, forgiveness, patience
and bringing you back to reality by reading
the Quran and praying,” he said.
The Ramadan Street Food Festival will take place on April 23.
Toongabbie: Investigations
continue into fatal stabbing
Detectives have released CCTV vision
in a public appeal for information, as
investigations continue into a fatal stabbing
at Toongabbie earlier this year.
Emergency services were called to
Valeria Street, Toongabbie, about 6.30pm
on Friday, January 7, where a man was
found suffering stab wounds to his body.
Officers attached to Blacktown Police
Area Command rendered first aid to the
man before NSW Ambulance paramedics
arrived; however, he died at the scene.
The man was later identified as 45-yearold
Shane Naylor.
A 56-year-old man, who was also
injured during the incident, was taken to
hospital under police guard. He was later
released from hospital and has since
spoken with investigators.
Detectives from Blacktown Police
Area Command, assisted by the State
Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, are
continuing to investigate the fatal stabbing
under Strike Force Haskett.
As part of their ongoing inquiries,
investigators have now released CCTV
vision of two men who were in the area at
the time of the incident and are appealing
to the community for information.
Blacktown Police Area Command
Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector
Dave Goddard, said investigators
believe there are people with information
who have yet to come forward.
Investigations under Strike Force
Haskett are continuing.
Anyone with information about this
Sydney Olympic Park: One youth
dead, one injured at Easter Show
A teen has died and a second has been
injured after they were stabbed at the
Royal Easter Show on Monday, April 11.
Emergency services were called to
the carnival ride section about 8pm,
responding to reports of a fight.
Officers found two boys, aged 16 and
17, suffering stab wounds, one critically
injured.
Police rendered first aid until NSW
Ambulance paramedics arrived and
treated them at the scene, before both
were taken to Westmead Hospital. The
older boy died on the way to hospital.
Show visitors were moved out of the
area and a crime scene was established.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested nearby
a short time later. At the time he was
allegedly in possession of a knife.
He was taken to Auburn Police Station
and charged with ‘affray, armed with
intent to commit indictable offence’, and
‘custody of knife in public place’.
The boy was refused bail and appeared
in children’s court on Tuesday, April 12.
An investigation into the incident
continues and police are appealing for
anyone with information or vision of the
incident, to come forward and contact
police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333
000.
The carnival section has reopened.
Lucette was welcomed by the community
It all started one day when the village
“I never realised how many friends I
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
There’s a planetary pile-up in your
home zone so expect some family shenanigans
and domestic dramas this
week (especially on Monday and Tuesday).
You’re also likely to hear some startling
news that makes your ears burn but
try to be super discreet with any secrets
that come your way. If you’re tempted
to spread red-hot rumours and gratuitous
gossip, then heed the wise words of
birthday great, novelist and poet Charlotte
Bronte, “Look twice before you
leap.”
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Neptune are
all visiting your sign, so it’s time to tap
into the Piscean creativity and courage
within. Other people are looking to
you for compassionate strong leadership
and perceptive solutions, so roll
up your sleeves and get to work! Your
motto is from the great Queen Elizabeth
(who turns 96 on Thursday). “When life
is hard the courageous do not lie down
and accept defeat. Instead, they are all
the more determined to struggle for a
better future.”
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
As the resident Warrior Man/Woman
of the zodiac, your usual approach is
to charge into situations quickly with
impulsive verve. The long list of Aries
hotheads includes Butch Cassidy, Bette
Davis, Alec Baldwin and Russell Crowe.
Rams are also notorious for lacking follow-through.
But this week Mars is in
introspective Pisces and the Sun transits
into patient Taurus. So make sure
your fiery enthusiasm is tempered with
a thoughtful attitude and a long-term
plan.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
The Sun shifts into your sign on
Wednesday. So it’s time for steady Bulls
to step up and be the calm voice of reason,
as you find creative ways to work
with others. If you collaborate and are
prepared to pivot, then it will help steer
you onto more solid ground in these
uncertain times. Be inspired by the
great Queen Elizabeth (who turns 96 on
Thursday). “Whatever life throws at us,
our individual responses will be all the
stronger for working together and sharing
the load.”
Most Geminis are gregarious gadflies,
clever communicators and masters at
multi-tasking. But things could go haywire
this week, as the planets disrupt
your preconceived plans. Don’t let it
deter you though! Mercury (your patron
planet) links up with intrepid Uranus,
so strive to be more adventurous, as you
grab opportunities with both hands.
Be inspired by birthday great, actress
Shirley MacLaine, “Don’t be afraid to go
out on a limb. It’s where all the fruit is.”
With the Sun, Mercury and Uranus all
moving through your networking zone,
the more you mix and mingle and the
more connections you make (in person
and online) the better the week will be.
Looking for employment? It’s time to
capitalise on all the contacts you have -
from family members, close friends and
former colleagues to acquaintances in
your local community. Don’t wait for
opportunities to magically appear … be
proactive about following your dreams.
The Sun, Mercury and Uranus bring
the opportunity for recognition and advancement
at school, university or work.
Through your daily words and actions,
you have the power to influence other
people in positive and productive ways.
So don’t miss the chance to make a difference.
But Monday’s Sun-Pluto square
could increase pressure and encourage
power struggles and ego clashes. Clever
Lions will employ smart strategies to reduce
conflict and lower stress levels.
This week the Sun, Mercury and Uranus
encourage you to explore new horizons.
The wider your circle of friends
and acquaintances, the more influence
you will have in the big world outside
your door. Being confident and decisive
are the keys. Plus, with harmony planet
Venus visiting your relationship zone
(until May 2) do all you can to bypass
dramas and fix problems. It’s time to be
more conciliatory as you sit down and
smoke the pipe of peace!
Monday and Tuesday look unpredictable
(especially involving finances) and
the Sun/Pluto square could throw a relationship
challenge in your direction
(perhaps involving jealous behaviour
or a power struggle). Your ruling planet
Venus is transiting through Pisces, so do
your best to play the perceptive peacemaker.
Romance and passion are also
highlighted as the Sun, Mercury and
Uranus stimulate your sensuality zone.
Feel the love Libra!
The Sun moves into your relationship
zone, so find practical ways to help those
around you. But resist the temptation
to be a stubborn, intractable and riskadverse
Scorpio. Extraordinary times
require extraordinary measures, innovative
ideas and creative thinking. So keep
your options wide open and your adaptability
muscles well-flexed. Be inspired
by birthday great, actress and author
Shirley MacLaine, “Someday change
will be accepted as life itself.”
When it comes to a social event or a
complicated friendship, hold onto your
hat and prepare for some dramas! It is
a good week to spruce up your domestic
abode and entertain at home, as you
enjoy fine food and convivial company.
However, when dealing with a fractious
family member, you’ll find some creative
sugar-coating will help to convey
your message in a more positive way. On
Sunday, replace negative thinking with a
focused mental approach.
Capricorns will feel capricious and
cranky this week! Expect some uncomfortable
discussions with family and
friends. You’re not in the mood to be diplomatic,
and others will be surprised by
the intensity of your feelings (and your
reluctance to compromise). But you’ll
have to give a little in order to get a lot.
Avoid becoming bogged down in negatives
and being a carping critic. On the
weekend, do your best to kick up your
Goat heels and have some serious fun.
LOVE IS
STILL IN
parra news » Tuesday, April 19, 2022
THE AIR!
CASSIDY PEARCE
50 years ago, the world was introduced
to music icon, John Paul
Young. But, some might find it
hard to believe that his musical
journey, which began five years
earlier, almost never was.
“I lived in Fairfield, but I used to live in
Liverpool, and for the weekends, I’d go
back to Liverpool and visit my mates, and
we’d hang out for the weekend, just goofing
off, hanging around the Liverpool mall,
playing pinball, stuff like that,” he said.
“Then, one weekend, I went there and
they said, ‘We’re going to form a band’,
and I politely wished them the best of luck.
They said, ‘No, no, no, you’ve gotta join,
you’ve gotta be in it’, and I really didn’t
want to be in it, but I’m very glad they
talked me into it!
“Before long, we went from absolutely
zero to the biggest band in Liverpool, as I
used to tell people. Just like The Beatles!”
In 1971, John was approached by Simon
Napier-Bell, the mastermind behind
bands such as Wham!, the Yardbirds and
T Rex.
Less than a year later, he released his first
big hit, ‘Pasadena’, kickstarting what would
be a long, illustrious career.
In the years that followed, John would
feature in the original ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’,
become the unofficial co-presenter
of ABC TV’s ‘Countdown’, alongside
Molly Meldrum, and release a slew of
hit songs – the biggest of which being
‘Love Is In The Air’. But, his most notable
memory from the time is a little
more obscure.
“When ‘Love Is In The Air’ was big, I
was a football fanatic,” he said.
“I actually got the chance to go to the
FA Cup Final at Wembley in a chauffeur
driven car. That to me was just unbelievable
type stuff. I know it seems a little bit
more insignificant, but it just meant so
much to me, because it meant so many
different things at once.”
Now, the 71-year-old is back and reliving
his best and worst moments in his
new tour, ‘JPY: 50 Years Young – The Anniversary
Tour’.
“I think anyone’s going to enjoy it, because
it’s more than just the music,” he
said.
“There’ll be some nice, humorous stories
there to keep you laughing, and a
couple of sad bits as well to make you
think, but I think if you know nothing
about me, you’ll certainly know a bit
more by the time you leave!”
‘JPY: 50 Years Young – The Anniversary
Tour’ will be on at St Marys Band
Club on Friday, May 20 at 8pm. Tickets
are $49. For more information or to
PUBLIC EXHIBITION – CORRECTION TO DATES
Public Exhibition of a draft Planning Agreement for 195 Church Street,
65–79 Macquarie Street, 38 & 45 Hunter Street, Parramatta (St John’s
Anglican Church site) associated with a site-specific Planning Proposal (PP)
and site-specific Development Control Plan (DCP) that commenced
exhibition on 29 March 2022
The City of Parramatta Council is publicly exhibiting a draft Planning Agreement for land at
195 Church Street, 65–79 Macquarie Street, 38 & 45 Hunter Street, Parramatta (known as the
St John’s Anglican Church site), associated with a draft site-specific PP and draft site-specific DCP.
The notice in Parramatta NEWS on 6 April 2022 stated that the draft Planning Agreement would
commence public exhibition on 6 April and conclude on 6 May 2022. Due to delays with legal
drafting, the exhibition dates of the draft Planning Agreement are now Tuesday 12 April to Friday
13 May 2022.
The draft Planning Agreement details the public benefits the Church will be required to provide if
they are able to secure approval to demolish the St John’s Parish Church Hall (a local heritage item)
as part of a redevelopment on the site. The public benefits include public access to the Church
grounds which the Church has also agreed to upgrade, and provision of vehicle and pedestrian
access arrangements that will make moving around this part of the City easier and safer.
This Planning Agreement is in association with the draft PP and DCP that are currently on public
exhibition. The draft PP and DCP propose controls to increase density on the site to allow for
re-development for two new buildings and associated works.
The draft Planning Agreement, draft PP and DCP and supporting information will be publicly
exhibited until Friday 13 May 2022 and can be viewed at:
Producers of ‘The Bachelor’ are hoping
a change of scenery might improve
the show’s dire ratings, switching locations
from Sydney to the Gold Coast for
next season. After nine years based in
NSW, production of ‘The Bachelor’ will
relocate to the Goldie for at least this year.
Filming should kick off shortly.
Channel Seven has finally confirmed
the ‘Royalty’ housemates for this season
of ‘Big Brother’. Coming back for a second
stint in the BB house are: ‘Farmer’ Dave
(2006 housemate), Drew (2013 housemate),
Tully (2013 housemate), Estelle
(2012 housemate), Layla (2012 runnerup),
Reggie (2003 winner), Tim (2013
winner), Trevor (2004 winner) and Tully
(2013 housemate). The new season of ‘Big
Brother’ will premiere in May.
REVIEW
Ambulance

2 hour, 16 minutes
parra news » Tuesday, April 19, 2022
Expecting anything else other than
cheesy action scenes and over-the-top
explosions from a Michael Bay movie
would probably be asking too much.
‘Ambulance’ stays on brand for Bay,
with police cars flying through the air,
helicopters traversing rivers and the star
of the show, an ambulance, evading it
all.
‘Ambulance’ follows two brothers who
become unlikely bank robbers. Will and
Danny (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jake
Gyllenhaal) have it all planned out, or
at least the latter does, but their escape
goes wrong and they hijack an LA ambulance
to get out of, or into, trouble.
Paramedic Cam Thompson (Eiza
Gonzalez) becomes an unlikely hostage,
all while trying to keep a shot police
officer alive in the back of the ambulance.
What ensues is one of the longest police
chases you could imagine; it lasts the
vast majority of the movie, which is way
too long in the first place at more than
two hours.
Some of the action scenes are great, but
there’s only so many lucky escapes and
destroyed police cars you can handle
before things just get overly tedious.
Had ‘Ambulance’ been a short, sharp 90
minute movie, it may well have achieved
its goal of delivering an exciting action
flick with non-stop movement.
Instead it tries way too hard. The action
scenes become boring and the dialogue
and storyline gets weaker and weaker as
the film progresses.
‘Ambulance’ is far from Bay’s best
work, and very much flatlines.
FC Barcelona to light up the west
NATHAN TAYLOR
One of the biggest football clubs in the
world – FC Barcelona – will travel to
Australia for the first time ever next
month to battle the A-Leagues All Stars at
Sydney Olympic Park’s Accor Stadium.
Boasting a global fan base of 270 million fans
and recognised the world over for their iconic
blue and garnet colours, La Liga giants FC
Barcelona have been one of the most successful
clubs in world football for much of their
123-year history.
Backed by Destination NSW and Venues NSW
on behalf of the State Government, FC Barcelona’s
one-night-only football blockbuster will
be held on Wednesday, May 25.
The match will also be an entrée to the
A-Leagues Men’s Grand Final during the last
week in May and in the same week as football’s
prestigious Dolan Warren Awards.
“The FC Barcelona v A-Leagues All Stars
match will generate significant international
interest and put Australian football back in
the international spotlight. It’s an incredible
opportunity to showcase both our domestic
professional A-Leagues and our beautiful
Harbour City to the world,” Minister for Tourism
and Sport, Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said.
FC Barcelona is coming to Sydney next month, with a huge crowd expected to watch the famous
team take on the A-Leagues All Stars side at Accor Stadium.
“Hosting this sporting star power in Sydney
will highlight the city’s attractions and worldclass
events calendar to football fans around
the globe, turbocharging the NSW visitor
economy on its road to recovery.”
The A-Leagues All Stars return after an
eight-year hiatus, bringing together a team
of A-League Men’s players to be showcased at
Accor Stadium.
Winners of 26 La Liga titles, five European
Cups, 31 Copa Del Rey trophies and three FIFA
Club World Cups, FC Barcelona have enjoyed
sustained success since their inception way
back in 1899.
Known for their attractive tiki-taka attacking
style of football, FC Barcelona has been – and
still is – home to some of the best footballers in
the world.
“We are very happy to announce this match
in Australia against the A-Leagues All Stars.
This will be the first time the team visits this
country, where Barca are generating great
interest,” FC Barcelona Vice President Marketing
Area, Juli Guiu said.
“Being able to play this match will give us the
opportunity to bring the club and its values
closer to our fans and will also give us the
opportunity for new audiences to get to know
FC Barcelona and all that it represents, which
has made it a reference entity on and off the
pitch.”
The coach and team selection process for the
A-Leagues All Stars team will be announced
shortly, with ticketing information available at
www.barcainsydney.com.au. Accor Stadium
members also get access to the game.
