Sutton Tools plans
rebuild in Rangiora
By SHELLEY TOPP
Anew Sutton Tools factory will be
built in Rangiora following the
demise of the Kaiapoi factory which
was badly damaged by fire in
January.
Demolition of the old factory
building is almost completed, but
the new factory will rise on 13.8
hectares of land on the corner of
Todds and Fernside roads in
Rangiora, says Sutton Tools (NZ)
general manager Kevin Donovan.
‘‘The Kaiapoi site is now
surrounded by more and more
residential property and is no
longer ideal for large scale
industrial manufacturing,’’ he says.
‘‘We are really excited about the
new site.’’
The demolition of the old building
and waste removal from the site had
been acomplicated process due to
asbestos issues with the old roof.
‘‘We are aware that the
demolition process has been noisey
and disruptive for neighbours and
we thank them for their patience.
The Waimakariri District Council
and staff have also been very
supportive,’’ he says.
‘‘We have made changes to some
remaining buildings in preparation
for limited manufacturing on the
current site as we complete
machine building projects.
‘‘This should start in May/June.’’
It is expected to take 1218 months
to build the new factory with similar
time frames likely for new
machines, purchased from
overseas, to be delivered to the new
factory.
Fifty staff have been made
redundant.
‘‘Many found jobs very quickly,
some have chosen to take abreak
for awhile and others retired. We
were inundated with job offers/
opportunities from local employers
and agencies,’’ Kevin said.
General manager ... Kevin Donovan
‘‘Seventeen staff have taken
temporary roles at our factories in
Australia, and others have been
redeployed to help our engineering
team in Kaiapoi. We have tried to
retain as much specialised skill and
experience as we can, however with
the reduced income we have had to
make some difficult choices.’’
Fire investigators have been
unable to identify what caused the
January 30 fire.
‘‘This is disappointing as we
would like to know what caused it,’’
Kevin said.
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon
says its great to hear Sutton Tools
has found anew home in
Waimakariri.
‘‘This will be aloss to Kaiapoi but
it’s great this business that’s such an
institution in the District is here to
stay.’’
He says he, deputy Mayor Neville
Atkinson and council staff, have
been working with the company
since the fire to help them reestablish.
‘‘We’re committed to continuing
to help Sutton Tools as they move up
the road to Southbrook in
Rangiora.’’
Crowds turned out at Anzac
North Canterbury.
Several dawn services
were held with young and old
joining together to
remember in the early
morning darkness.
In Hanmer Springs the
Amuri Mounted Rifles
paraded, while Amberley,
Pegasus and Woodend also
held dawn services.
Mayor Marie Black, who
spoke at the Amberley
service, and several smaller
services in the district, said
attention turned to the
courageous actions of
service personnel, and the
sacrifices they have made
across ‘‘our history’’.
‘‘We take time on Anzac
Day to remember the
generations of servicemen
and women who without
guarantee of asafe return,
left their homes and families
for shores unknown.
‘‘While we reflect on their
experiences, we can also give
cause to consider the
division that exists in our
world today.
‘‘The event in Ukraine is
shocking and distressing,
demonstrating the enduring
act of war and conflict. For
every individual touched,
their lives are touched
forever.
‘‘Let us never forget the
example of our servicemen
and women and consider it
our duty to uphold the legacy
by continuing to stand
against division and hatred,
and to strive for apeaceful
future for all. We see that the
human toll of conflict is not
confined to the past, nor a
single generation,’’ said Mrs
Hedge needs axing -residents
By ADAM BURNS
Maintenance of an ‘‘out of control’’
hedge at Waikuku Beachcould cost
ratepayers
tensofthousands
of dollars
over the next
coupleofyears,
despite plans
for it to be cut
down.
But there are
hopes the axing of the shadowy shrub
can be fasttracked, following
suggestionsits removalwas at least
Plans for the macrocarpa shelterbelt
hedge,which stands betweensix to
eight metres high on Parks Avenue,
continue to causeheadaches for the
small beachtown community, including
funding avenuesfor the hedge’s swift
removal.
Areport was tabled at the Woodend
SeftonCommunity Board meetinga
fortnight ago which recommended the
hedge be removed.
However it was initially proposed the
project be considered for inclusion in
the Waimakariri District Council’s 2024
Long Term Plan, with costs for the
removal of the hedge and replanting
estimatedatabout $105,000.
The hedge could also absorb ongoing
maintenance costs ‘‘atHealth and
Safetylevels’’until it was removed in
2024/2025, according to the report.
Maintenance of the hedgecosts the
council about $20,000 for the firsttrim,
followed by afurther cost of ‘‘between
$10,000 and $15,000 every18months’’.
Powerlines brought down plane
By ROBYN BRISTOW
The Canterbury Recreational Aircraft
Club has instituted a‘‘200 foot minima’’
for practicing simulated engine failure
exercises following aSafety
Investigation Report after alight
aircraft accident 12 months ago.
Astudent on his third lesson, and his
instructor, nosedived into apaddock
after ZKRGB clipped powerlines
during asimulated engine failure
exercise, on April 28 last year.
Both pilots required hospital
treatment for their injuries.
The Safety Investigation Report into
the incident during flight training, was
published on the CAA website earlier
this month.
The CAA report says aconclusion from
its investigations was the instructor and
student had descended lower than was
considered necessary during the engine
failure exercise.
At around 30 feet, the aircraft clipped
powerlines and hit the ground nosedown
after flying through agap in a
hedge, and turning slightly to the right to
get abetter distance to land in. ‘‘The
instructor reported not being very
familiar with the area, and usually
conducted simulations elsewhere.
Due to calm weather on the day,
however, the instructor determined the
area was appropriate for the
exercise,’’the CAA report says.
It says neither the instructor from the
Rangiorabased Canterbury
Recreational Aircraft Club, or the
student, aRangiora retiree, saw the
powerlines due to the hedge ‘‘largely’’
obscuring the power poles and lines.
‘‘There were limited visual cues for
However, although the instructor was
operating within the rules at the time of
lower than necessary to demonstrate the
instructor was not following lesson
content guidelines as recommended by
the Recreational Aircraft Association of
New Zealand and the CAA.
The student was on his third lesson,
all of which included simulated engine
failures, and also several other different
skills such as affects of controls, straight
and level turning climbing and
descending, and circuits.
‘‘This was not in line with the RAANZ
or CAA flight instruction guideline.
‘‘The instructor said he wanted to
demonstrate to students awider range
of exercises to capture their interest and
keep students enthused about coming
back for subsequent flights,’’ the report
says.
He also said demonstrating simulated
engine failures early in training, helped
allay fears of what would happen if
there was an engine failure.
The conclusions in the report cite the
introduction of advanced skills to presolo
students ‘‘is likely to overwhelm the
student and limit the effectiveness of
learning’’.
In response to the report the club has
introduced the 200ft minima for practice
of simulated engine failure, agreed to
follow lesson delivery guidelines as
outlined on the RANZ and CAA
websites, and the RAANZ has
communicated its expectations to
members that flight instruction had to
be in accordance with the guidelines.
Student Alan Macdonald, says he has
not been put off flying by the accident,
but has resigned from the club as he is
unable to reconcile the president’s
published comments in the national
media at the time of the accident, with
the CAA report.
Rate increase doesn’trecognise hardship
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Environment Canterbury’s (ECan)
proposed 24.5 percent rates increase,
makes the sector appear unresponsive
to the ‘‘significant and genuine’’
hardship in the rate paying community,
says the Waimakariri District Council.
In asubmission presented to ECan on
its draft annual plan on Wednesday,
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon said in
the face of pandemic impacts and steep
rises in the cost living, the proposed
increase doesn’t acknowledge the
realities many households are facing.
He said when added to last year’s
increase, ratepayers would be facing a
34 percent increase over two years.
Asignificant contributor to the
increase is aproposed trial of changes
in public transport fare structures, in
response to climate change and in abid
to reduce emissions.
Mr Gordon said his council urged
ECan to pause fare structures until the
community has ‘‘ meaningful
opportunity’’ to consider alternative
options for achieving the ends ECan is
seeking.
He said atrial is ‘‘somewhat
unrealistic’’ and on the available
evidence, any emission reduction
benefits gained, on the available
evidence would be small and expensive.
‘‘The proposed increase in uniform
targeted passenger transport (urban)
rates per property, over six years in
Waimakariri is 247%, including 26% in
2022/2023.
‘‘This level of increase is
unsustainable.’’
The council also questions if it is
appropriate to use the rating system in
this way, in what amounts to ‘‘income
redistribution for social and
environmental outcomes’’.
‘‘These changes are being promoted
without reference to ECan’s statement
of community outcomes, nor abenefits
analysis in relation to its revenue and
financing policy: and, outside of the
framework for joint working under the
Greater Christchurch Partnership and
the regional land transport planning
process.’’
Mr Gordon says the council does not
dispute many in the community are
doing it tough and afare concession
would assist them.
‘‘But the Government has responded
to this with benefit and minimum wage
changes, as well as its own fare
reductions with Budget 2022 yet to
come.’’
The council also questions the
proposed funding formulae for
recovering costs associated with
localised flood recovery and protection
across the regional community.
He asked ECan to pause until areport
by the combined Regional and Unitary
Council’s Group, Central Government
Coinvestment in Flood Protection
Schemes: ACall for National Leadership
and Urgent Action to Meet the Flood
Hazard Risks Arising from Climate
Change,isresponded to by Government.
It also expresses concerns about a
future levy to fund action in response to
climate change.
‘‘We recognise the challenges that
climate change presents,’’ Mr Gordon
said.
More rigorous assessment, and
documentation was needed before the
proposal could be considered in a
meaningful way.
‘‘Without that, in its current form, it is
difficult to support this until more
definitive uses of this potential fund are
subject to community consultation,’’ Mr
Gordon said.
He also called on ECan to help fund
the monitoring of water quality in
private wells, in partnership with the
Waimakariri District Council, and
expressed concern about the slow
progress being made to restore the area
where trees were removed from the
Ashley/Rakahuri River margin, near
Cones Road.
‘‘Many in our community are keenly
Musical Annie opens on May 12
Stepping out on stage for the opening
night of North Canterbury Musicals
show Annie won’t be quite as scary for
11yearold Cassidy HartleyBrown, as it
was for her mother, Dale, who starred as
Annie when the society first put on the
show in 1987.
For Dale, opening night was her stage
debut.
She had only auditioned for the show
because her friend was doing it.
‘‘Otherwise Iwould have been too
afraid,’’ she says.
When she was given the lead role she
was over the moon.
‘‘ Iwas so shocked, as everyone else
had much more experience than me.’’
Cassidy also admits that going on stage
for the first time on opening night is the
scariest part of performing, but she
comes to her role of the orphan Duffy
with more experience, after playing in
the society's production of Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat last
year.
Also, she has been in several shows
with the Hartley School of Performing
Arts, alocal Rangiora business that grew
out of Dale’s stage experience on the
Town Hall stage.
‘‘This was the point that Idiscovered
the thing that made me happy, the place
where Ibelonged,’’ she says.
‘‘I love that my daughter feels the
same way about theatre.’’
Cassidy says she doesn't feel any
pressure following her mother as she is
playing adifferent role, but is happy to
take advice.
‘‘She reminds me to use my feelings
when Iamsinging.’’
In the future, Cassidy intends to follow
her mothers footsteps and make acareer
on the stage.
‘‘Yes, yes, yes, and yes! Iamjust
passionate about performing and doing
that kind of thing. Ijust want to be in a
theatrical kind of job,’’ she says.
will come to claim her from Miss
Harrigan's orphanage. When billionaire
Oliver Warbucks offers to adopt her, she
asks him to help her find her parents,
tempting for Miss Hannigan and the con
Anzac reflections
Autumn is bringingits usual amazing
arrayofcolour.
This yearisnoexception.
In someparts of the gardenroses
remain in flower, bulbs are popping
through the groundand trees are slowly
losing their leaves.
This visual display highlights the
complexity of nature.
Life is also complex as we reflect on
AnzacDay and what it means to us as
individuals.
As New Zealanders gathered to mark
AnzacDay our attention turns to the
courageousactions of our service
personal,and the sacrifices theyhave
made across our history.
We taketime to remember the
generations of servicemen andwomen
who without guarantee of asafe return,
left their homesand families for shores
unknown.
Whilewereflect on theirexperiences,
we can also give causetoconsider the
division that exists in our world today.
The event in Ukraineisshockingand
distressing, demonstrating the enduring
act of war and conflict for every
individualtouched—theirlives
touched forever.
Let us never forget the example of our
servicemen and women,and consider it
our duty to uphold the legacyby
continuing to stand against division and
hatred andtostrivefor apeaceful future
for all.
We see thatthe human toll of conflict
is not confined to the past, norasingle
generation.
Acts of war can showushumanity at
its worst, howeverNew Zealanders who
served our country, have exhibitedthe
best of humanvalues,courage,
compassion and the spirit of service.
Pastthe peak?Whynow
is thetimeto boost
As bordersopen and restrictions on movements and activities
ease, it is moreimportant nowthan evertobeuptodatewith
your COVID-19 vaccinations. Here, Dr Helen Skinner,ECC
Incident Controller with Canterbury DHB, shares why it is upping
the ante on its boostervaccination programme.
By now, we all know someone who has
succumbed to COVID-19. Perhaps you’ve had
COVID-19 yourself?
Forthe lucky few, somemild symptoms and a
bit ofwearinessmight be all thatisexperienced.
But from whatI've seen, morepeople are
suffering some pretty severeeffects,many of
which aregoing on forweeks.
Fortunately, many of us were fully vaccinated
and boosted when the Omicron peak hit
Canterbury.Ican’t stateenough justwhata
difference that hasmade. People who areatthe
peak oftheir immunity respond much better to
the virus,and recovermorequickly.
Right now,morethan 90,000 people in
Canterbury aredue fortheir booster.That’s
why we’reuppingthe ante this month and
reminding people of theimportance of abooster
vaccination.
Winter is fast approaching, and with it, more
time inside -aneven better environment for
spreading COVID-19. Add to this the likelihood
of amuchmoresevere flu season that
we have seenfor years, and the risk this
winter is high.
Getting boostedisthe bestway to
fight Omicron
After awhile, your protectionagainst the
COVID-19 virus starts to drop away. The booster
dose gives youthe added protection youneed
againstOmicron. It increases your immunity
substantially and it reduces the chance of you
sharing it with friends and whānau if youdoget
COVID-19.
If youare 18 or over, and it’s been three
months since your second vaccination, then
you’re duefor your booster.
The greatnewsrecently is that16and 17 year
olds arenow also eligible forboosters. Rangatahi
in this agegroup need to wait sixmonths after
finishing their COVID-19 vaccinations.
Have youhad COVID-19 already?
I’m often hearing from people asking whether,
having had the virus, they still need abooster.
Unfortunately, even if you’vehad COVID-19, you
can getitagain. And, while youget some natural
immunity through having the virus,itdoesn’t
last. So,boostersmatter. You need to wait three
months since having COVID-19 though.
It’s heartening to see thatmostofAotearoa
has now reached the peak of daily COVID-19
cases, but that doesn’t mean the risk has gone.
COVID-19 is going to be
around foralong time,
which is why nowisthe
time to protect yourself
and your whānau –and
the sooner,the better.
Thereare plenty
places youcan get
yourfree booster.Find
Getting your booster makes
it less likely you’llget really
sick with COVID-19,orpass it on.
It is the bestthing youcan do to
protectyou and your whānau.
When do Ineed to
have my booster?
If you are18or
second dose at least
3monthsago,it’s
time to getyourfree
Autumn with Art in Gardens provides joy
By SHELLEY TOPP
The joy and happiness gardens and art
bring to many people was obvious to see
at the Autumn with Art in Gardens tour
in Culverden last weekend.
Three gardens, Hemingford, owned by
Lissa Holland, Wynyard, owned by Lou
Davison and The Top Cottage, owned by
Jane McIntosh, were opened to the
public last Friday, Saturday and Sunday
for the second annual garden tour.
The three women are all neighbours
who are also close friends and share a
love of gardening and art.
Lissa said they were pleased with the
way the event went and enjoyed
welcoming people into their gardens.
‘‘Everyone was so admiring of the
artwork, gardens and the gorgeous
autumn colours,’’ she said.
Lissa and Jane are both established,
talented artists and had their own
artwork on show in their gardens and
homes during the tour, while Sarah
Beal, of Rangiora, was the guest artist at
Wynyard.
While Hemingford and Wynyard are
both established gardens, The Top
Cottage garden is awork in progress
which only began last November.
Visitors to The Top Cottage saw the
exciting beginnings of agarden in its
infancy, while at Hemingford, a1
hectare garden established on a955
hectare sheep and cattle farm, alarge
stand of 65yearold cedars, nestled at
the foot of the Lowry Peaks Range, is a
spectacular feature.
Wynyard has been established on 4
hectares, the large front lawn providing
awide, open view to the southern
Kaikoura Ranges and aNew Zealand
native garden area attracts kereru,
bellbirds, fantails and bellbirds, while
Lombardy poplars along the driveway
up to the homestead provide a
spectacular entrance.
It was an inspired decision by the
three women to open their gardens to
the public during this time of year with
both Hemingford and Wynyard
providing ablast of autumnal colour and
The Top Cottage garden designed to
showcase colour in future years.
Funds raised from the event go toward
the Autumn with Art in Gardens
Scholarship. Last year it was awarded to
Amuri Area School art student Myla
Roberts.
AMANDA BOWES-DURAND
For those interested in share markets and how to
make serious wealth from them there’s avery interesting
investment firm with a growing North Canterbury
presence. This is the New Zealand based Australasian
hedge fund start up, Chance Voight Investment Partners
Limited (CVI Partners).
Hedge funds, legendary across the world for their
concentrated well-timed callsonthe sharemarketand the
money they’vemadefor theirinvestorbaseweredescribed
in arecentstudyas the‘smartmoney’inthe markets.
Chance Voight has been established with aview to
mining extraordinary profits from the Australian stock
market and asBernard Whimp, the founder and CIO
of Chance Voight, says‘We’ll bedeploying ourunique
insightsand investment style with theaim of compounding
investor capital at 20% per annum orbetter over multiple
years’.
Setting up CVI Partners in 2018 as aspecialist deep
valuestock pickinginvestmentfirm,Bernard waslooking
to capitalize on almost a decade of experience as a
professional investor in companieslisted on theAustralian
sharemarket(theASX).
He concentrates on the ASX, as experience has shown
himthat in this part of theworld that’s wheremany of the
best sharemarketmoney-making opportunities are.
So howdid CVI comeabout?
“Well,” Bernard says, “It’sreally about the sheer joyof
doingwhat you love day andnight”.
Adecadeago,Bernard wanted to test atheory.Hemade
aquick fortune by making offers to buy shares directly
from shareholders incompanies listed on the NZStock
Exchange.
At Christmas time in2010, he launched aseries of
audaciousoff-marketofferswhich sawhim pick upaprofit
of almost $4million in amatter ofmonths, all kicked off
with an initial$7,000investment. Daring to do something
different made lots of money.
To most people, the share market can be abewildering
array of unfathomable numbers –Bernard sees itinfine
granulardetail.
The ASX, with its 2000 companies, provides the
opportunity to be incredibly selectivewhenbuyingshares.
Most years, heisable toidentify ahandful ofterrific
opportunities. The NZX incomparison has only about
160listed companies.
Theshare market is essentially atreasure hunt, he says.
“We’re really more like aprivate equity investment firm
operating inlisted markets with all the advantages ofthe
buy andsellability that listed marketsprovide butwithout
the tortuous negotiations onpurchase that private equity
requires.”
CVI Partners Chief Investment Officer (CIO), Bernard Whimp
The cornerstone of our investment view isthat we aim
to never spend an investor dollar unless webelieve that
we’regetting at leasttwo dollarsofvaluefor it.
“Asafirm, wehunt for situations where wecan obtain
substantial value for nothing, where we can buyastake
in aworthwhile business that is worth alot more than the
price weare paying.”
As Bernard puts it, ‘guys like me don’t believe the
passive index share investing that’s been popular over
the last decade will continue todeliver good returns into
the future and there’s now lots ofevidence emerging that
this passive investment style that so many New Zealand
investorsare involved with onewayor another, has‘hitthe
wall’. We thinkthat ‘stock picking’ where you arelooking
to hold a concentrated portfolio of winning situations
with high probability to the upside maywell prove tobe
asuperior share market investment strategy in the years
ahead.
He doesn’tratemostofwhat goes on around investment
in the share market at all. “It’s essential in ahedge fund
to establish anunconventional investment style. You’re
not likely to make much money doing what everyone else
does, asthe saying goes -You’ve got to be different, and
you’vegot to be right!”
We’re looking to deliver investors annualized returns
at that 20%pa mark. We’re not reinventing the wheel
in doing this. These types ofreturns are typical ofgood
Australian hedge fund operations, it’s just that you’ve
probably never heard of them, and no one’s ever offered
you accesstoone in NewZealand.
Bernard isbuilding Chance Voight with an innovative
structure where besides managing money in the ASX
for external investors Chance Voight will have alot of
‘proprietary capital’ (the firm’s own money) atwork. To
this end the Chance Voight parent company intends to
undertake an initialpublic offering (IPO)inafew months’
time. This will give smaller investors an opportunity to
back the firm’s concentrated stock picking investment
style and learn quite alot about the share market asthe
same time.‘We’llbetryingtoget many of ourinvestment
insights across toourshareholders’,saysBernard.
Christchurchlawyer andfriend,PaulCurrie,has this to
say about Bernard:
“I have never met anyone who has the share market
understanding and insights that Bernard does. He is very
approachable and exceptionally interestingtotalkto.”
Outside ofits ASX share market funds Chance Voight
is keenly aware that what’s important for many New
Zealand investors today is regular cash flow and income
to help pay thebills in these inflationary times. To this end
Chance Voight has itshigh yield mortgage fund available
which paysinvestors regular interest at10% perannum.
All investments in the fund are secured bymortgage
over real estate and perhaps most importantly of all,
the fund does not take on any property development
risk, meaning that the fund does not lend on property
development situations.
As Bernard points out, “it’s lending onlower priority
mortgages todevelopment projects that has caused so
many historical problems for New Zealand investors over
the years and the CVI Fund is designed not to take this
type of risk on board”.
Costs eat into profits
By TIM CRONSHAW
Fonterra has foreshadowed a$9.30 to
$9.90 payout for eachkilogram of milk
solidswith a$9.60 mid range.
That could yet go higher for the next
forecast in May before the final wrapup
—ifdairyfuturesmarkets are any
indication.
But the list is growing for increasing
costs —interestrates, wages,
fertiliser,agrichemicals,fuel, animal
health, contracting and overall
inflation.
The costproportion is now believed
to be north of $7.50 for each kilogram
of milksolids produced.
Federated Farmers North
Canterbury dairy chairman KarlDean
said this season’srecord forecast
wasn’tlike payoutincreasesofthe
past because costs were rising at the
same time,ratherthan following a
year later.
‘‘It wouldn’t surprise me if it was
$7.50 to $8/kg,’’he said.
‘‘The key is the profitmargin and
that is no more than and could be less
than ayearago whenthe payout was
$7.54/kg.
‘‘We’ve had a$2payout jump but I
doubt we’vehad a$2profitjump.’’
If the forecasted milk price was
adjustedfor inflation, the profit
marginprobablywouldn’t be as high
as 2013’s $8.40/kg.
The Leeston farmer saidfarm costs
had liftedmore than $1/kg andthat
could be expectedtoincrease further
on the backofthe Ukraine war.
He said many farmers didn’t have
the ability to lower their costsaswages
never wentdown and fuelprices don’t
Hurunui almost topples Kaiapoi
RUGBY
By PETER WILLIAMS AND LINDSAY KERR
Saracens and Kaiapoi retained unbeaten
records in thisseason’s LuisettiSeeds
Combined rugby competition,but in vastly
contrastingmanners.
WhileSaracens travelled south and
completely blitzed Rakaia, Kaiapoi’s trip
northtoCulverden almost brought about
its undoing, and it was fourminutesinto
injury time before it finallyrepelled the
valiant challengefrom Hurunui.
HurunuivKaiapoi
This match wasathriller,and agreat
display of running rugby.
Kaiapoi had much the better of the first
half and led 197 at the break. Manymight
have expected Kaiapoi to run away in the
second half, but Hurunui had different
ideas. Displaying its trademark resilience
it fought its way back into the game to
bringthe scores level22allwith 20
minutes to play. There was no further
scoreuntilHurunuiwas awarded a
penalty in front, and Kyle Mckenzie raised
the flags with the clock showing 83
minutes of playingtime.
Therewas stilltime for akickoff.
Hurunui’sexit from the kick off failed to
find touch,and Kaiapoi flanker, Matt
Etheredge,made astrongrun up the
middle, offloading to winger Kimeon
Readewho celebrated his 50th matchfor
the team by scoring in the corner.
Hurunui 25 (NordyAnderson, Jonathon
and Kyle McKenzie conversions,
Oxford vSouthbridge
In amatchplayed at OxfordonThursday
evening, Oxford again surrendered an
earlylead with Southbridge leading 245 at
halftime, and extending to 315 soon after
the resumption.
Despite that massive deficit, Oxford
fought back, getting very good value from
some of its benchplayers —TevitaPongi,
Stew Dalzell and Shannon Croy.
Oxford evenhad the opportunityof
kicking apenaltyinthe dyingminutes, to
gain an extra bonus point, but opted to
attempt to score another try.For the
second week in arow Oxford notched a
4trybonus point. Three of the tries went
Ashley is provingvery competitive,but
remainswinless.
Abigger, strongerLincolnunit
dominatedthe forward battlethroughout,
but Lincoln’sbackswere muchless
impressive and made alot of mistakes. On
the other hand, Ashley’s forwards
struggled to get much ballfor abackline
thatconstantly looked dangerous,
Playing under an injury cloud, Nathan
Emery at first five made very good use of
whatball Ashleydid get. Matt Couch at
second five bristled with aggressive
running, and made anumber of breaks.
Its firsttry camewhen Couch linkedup
withfullback ,Luke Gold, who timed his
run into the backline withperfection,
before linking up with the strongrunning
KorbynGray to score wide out.
Grayhad an impressive all roundgame,
constantly lookingfor work, and was areal
danger whenever he got the ballinhand.
ASshley's stoutdefencewas afeature of
he match.Tireless Jack Regan set the
standard in this regard, making astring of
tackles, but the whole team should feel
veryproud of theirdefensive efforts.
bed the challengeofagallant Ohoka side.
WingerGeorge Wigginswas
outstanding, scoringahattrickoftries,
while Tom Wedlake and Caleb Parsons,
who is usually ahalfback but was playing
on the wing, alsoscored.
With ScottAllin addingthree
conversions, all Ohoka’s pointswere
scoredbybacks, but some of the forwards
made an importantcontributiontothe
team effort where Ben Gold was again to
the forefront, working tirelessly to secure
turnover ball. Jack Wedlakeand Tom
Webster impressed.
Southern 46 beat Ohoka 31 (George
Woodend vDarfield
A1532defeat of Woodend at the handsof
Darfield did not reflect the even natureof
the game.
Darfield went into the game as the
favourites, but was made to workhard for
the full80minutes. WhileDarfield led
throughout, whenever it scored, Woodend
foughtback.
With the score at 228, and 20 minutes
into the secondhalf, the rub of the green
was to go againstWoodend when it was
reducedto14players following ayellow
cardfor adangerous tackle.
Headingthe Woodend effortwas again
fullback Jordie Swaine. He scored all of
his team’s points with two triesand kicked
the points.
Bothtries signalled hisclass. For the
first he sidesteppedhis way throughthe
opposition, and for the second entered a
blind side move on an angle to create a
gap.Connor Swaine on the right wing had
alively gameuntil the yellow card was
issued.
GlenmarkCheviotvCeltic
Thiswas atoughaway match for
GlenmarkCheviot. The leadseesawed
throughout the firsthalf. Glenmark
Cheviot wenttothe break with a1312 lead
but two tries to Celticinthe middle of the
second half meant the visitors were
chasing the gamefor the last quarter.
Celtic scoredfour triestoone suggesting
theywere clearlythe superior team.
However it was not the caseasGlenmark
Cheviot was verymuch on top for
extended periods.
It was thisterritorial dominance that
enabledfullback Corrigan Harnetttokick
fourpenaltygoals.
All were longrangeaffairs. It was its
abilitytofinish off opportunities like these
thatprovedthe winning of the game in the
end.
Celtic 24 beat GlenmarkCheviot 19
(Thomas Blyth try, Corrigan Harnett 4
penalties and 1conversion).
Rakaia vSaracens
Rakaia started the seasonwell with awin
overWest Melton, but despite agood start,
Saracens defence held and it was not long
before the Saracens’ forwards established
ascendancy. All four first half tries were
scored by forwards with Connor Higgins
and AlexKennedy leading the waywith
two each.
In the second half though, it was the turn
of the backs who ran amokscoring at a
point aminute.Toby Ashbywas
outstanding withhis hardand direct
running at centre provingaconstant
Safety Improvements aFocus for the
Rangiora-Ashley Community Board
Community safety improvements were akey focus
of the Rangiora-Ashley Community Board meeting
on 13 April, with recommendations for animproved
lighting plan for Rangiora and Kaiapoi and safer
parking options around Rangiora Borough School.
The Board endorsed anew lighting concept design
plan for Rangiora and Kaiapoi to help improve the
safety and aesthetics ofthe two town centres.
For Rangiora, the plan includes adding warmer
lighting to improve safety along the main street,
while still using existing heritage light fittings
and poles to protect the history and style ofHigh
Street. The new lighting will also allow the Council
to have more control ofthe lights and even change
the colours for special events and festivals.
In Kaiapoi, the plan includes improvements
Working Alongside the Community
The Woodend-Seon Community Board meeting
on 11 April focused on parks and recreation
projects including aplayground at Woodend Beach,
proposed removal of hedging in Waikuku Beach,
plans for Seon Hall and the development ofa
spatial plan for Waikuku Beach.
Waikuku residents shared with Board members
their experience of living in the shadow ofalarge
macrocarpa hedge in the beach settlement. Staff
presented the results ofcommunity consultation
carried out in 2021 about the hedge to the Board.
While there was amixed response from residents,
the Board agreed that the hedge should be
removed. Funding will need to be secured from
the Council to complete the removal and aconcept
plan will be prepared for native planting toprovide
habitat, shelter and food for native birds.
Aworkshop was held to explore locations for the
Woodend Beach playground and toilets which will
be redeveloped next year. Residents shared their
ideas about play equipment and possible locations
with the Board.
Shona Powell Board Chairsays, “It is heartening to
see good community engagement at the centre of
the work that’s being proposed in these areas. It’s
important our community have the opportunity to
sharetheir views andprovidefeedback thatcan help
the Board make decisions. We alsowelcome the public
Drinking Water –
Plumbosolvency Health Notice
In New Zealand, most drinking water is
plumbosolvent, which means it can dissolve very
small amounts of metals from older pipes or from
metal fittings such as taps.
As an example, when you turn off atap there will be
asmall amount of water left in the tap body. If this
water is left sitting inthe tap for hours it may
dissolve metals from the tap body.
Although the health risk isnegligible, your local
Council is recommending that all households flush a
cup of water from their drinking water taps each
morning before use.
This is in line with the Drinking Water Standards for
New Zealand.
All households are advised to take this precaution,
whether they are on apublic orprivate water
supply.
If you want toknow more, check with your plumber
or contact your local Council for more information.
