Autumn with Art in Gardens provides joy

The joy and happiness gardens and art
bring to many people was obvious to see
at the Autumn with Art in Gardens tour
in Culverden last weekend.
Three gardens, Hemingford, owned by
Lissa Holland, Wynyard, owned by Lou
Davison and The Top Cottage, owned by
Jane McIntosh, were opened to the
public last Friday, Saturday and Sunday
for the second annual garden tour.
The three women are all neighbours
who are also close friends and share a
love of gardening and art.
Lissa said they were pleased with the
way the event went and enjoyed
welcoming people into their gardens.
‘‘Everyone was so admiring of the
artwork, gardens and the gorgeous
autumn colours,’’ she said.
Lissa and Jane are both established,
talented artists and had their own
artwork on show in their gardens and
homes during the tour, while Sarah
Beal, of Rangiora, was the guest artist at
Wynyard.
While Hemingford and Wynyard are
both established gardens, The Top
Cottage garden is awork in progress
which only began last November.
Visitors to The Top Cottage saw the
exciting beginnings of agarden in its
infancy, while at Hemingford, a1
hectare garden established on a955
hectare sheep and cattle farm, alarge
stand of 65­year­old cedars, nestled at
the foot of the Lowry Peaks Range, is a
spectacular feature.
Wynyard has been established on 4
hectares, the large front lawn providing
awide, open view to the southern
Kaikoura Ranges and aNew Zealand
native garden area attracts kereru,
bellbirds, fantails and bellbirds, while
Lombardy poplars along the driveway
up to the homestead provide a
spectacular entrance.
It was an inspired decision by the
three women to open their gardens to
the public during this time of year with
both Hemingford and Wynyard
providing ablast of autumnal colour and

Funds raised from the event go toward
the Autumn with Art in Gardens
Scholarship. Last year it was awarded to
Amuri Area School art student Myla
Roberts.
