‘Holy s**t someone has
just been hit by a train’
• By Daniel Alvey
THOSE WERE the words from
one of the first on the scene when a
car drove into the path of a train at
a railway crossing.
Scott McIlory was parked up
in his ute facing away from the
railway line when he heard a
“massive bang.”
I looked at my side mirror and I
saw a big cloud of dust. I thought
‘holy s**t someone has just been
hit by a train’,” he said.
The crash happened at the
Browns Rd level crossing in
Dunsandel last week.
McIlory said the train’s horn
sounded moments before impact.
The train – two connected
locomotives – hit the front of the
Toyota Corolla, spun it around
and pushed it off the tracks and
onto a grass verge on Leeston
Dunsandel Rd.
The railway crossing lights
were flashing and the bells sounding.
When McIlory went over to
check on the man, he was out of
his car and walking around.
“He was pretty shaken. He just
said he didn’t see the train. He’s
probably very, very lucky to be
alive still.”
McIlory called 111 and stayed at
the scene until emergency services
arrived.
A St John spokesperson said it
responded with two ambulances
and a rapid response vehicle, but
the driver declined to be assessed.
McIlory said he felt sorry for the
train driver.
“They probably wouldn’t have
known what they were walking
back to.”
SHOULD RATEPAYERS fund
The Long Term Plan maps out
are looking at a increase of about
13 per cent; the final figure
will be determined when city
councillors vote next month.
The Arts Centre has a funding
shortfall of $1.8 million.
There were 7040 submissions
Hire company bid to take over A&P Show
A HIRE company is proposing
to take over running the 2024
New Zealand Agricultural
Show to ensure this year’s event
goes ahead.
The Canterbury A&P Association
board announced
in April it was cancelling this
year’s show due to financial
difficulties. Earlier this month
most of the board announced
they would retire.
Phil Anderson said his company,
Event Hire, had sent the
association a proposal to run a
Paw-sitive outcome
A FAMILY thought they might
never see their cat Fletcher again
after he was missing for 12 days.
He turned up in Rangiora,
about 45km from his home in
Lincoln.
Fletcher’s
owner Rob
Naysmith said
he had no idea
how he got to
Rangiora.
He said it was
unlikely Fletcher
walked. It was
more plausible
for missing feline
Rob
Naysmith
he got into a vehicle or a trailer
undetected, he said.
“We’d spent hours searching
for him.
“We’d resigned ourselves to
the fact we might not see him
again.”
Fletcher is a seal point birman,
about eight-and-a-half-years-old.
The family have had him since he
was a kitten.
Fletcher was found using a
combination of his microchip
and social media. Naysmith said
while he was microchipped, the
slimmed down version of the
show, with a reduced number of
stalls and visitors.
He said they would hope to
get between 30,000 to 50,000
visitors over three days. Last
HOME SAFE: Fletcher is now back with his family in Lincoln,
after finding his way to Rangiora.
details weren’t current.
“With Fletcher, we hadn’t
updated the details for his
microchip. So when he was
handed in to the fabulous people
at Rangiora Vet Centre they
scanned him but they couldn’t
get in contact with us because it
year, the show got 110,000 visitors.
They are also proposing moving
the show from Thursday to
Saturday, rather than the traditional
Wednesday to Friday.
The Agricultural Show
usually ends on Canterbury
Anniversary Day. Anderson
said reducing the visitor numbers
would help the planning
process.
“From a planning perspective
it is good to work with limited
numbers,” Anderson said.
was the wrong phone number
and wrong address.”
Using the power of social
media, people got in touch with
the family to say Fletcher had
been found.
“We got in touch with the vet
and they asked a whole lot of
“You can do pre-sales, and
manage your infrastructure.
It’s really driven around traffic
management, and toilet infrastructure
et cetera.”
Anderson said they also want
to reduce the entry fees to make
it very affordable for families,
and to reduce the cost for stall
holders.
He said they are meeting
with the board on Tuesday and
would need a decision by the
end of May in order to get on
with planning.
questions, as they should,” said
Naysmith.
“One of the staff was fabulous,
she lived nearby to the vets and
came out at 7.30pm to open
up and give my wife and son
Fletcher.
“He was very smoochy and
purred a lot, when he got home,
he just stuck by us, and didn’t
really leave our side. He slept
right beside us on the bed which
he never does.”
Since being home Fletcher
has had a checkup at his local
Prebbleton Veterinary Hospital.
“He’s lost about 500g, so he
used to be just on 5kg now down
to 4.5kg. But other than that he’s
in perfect nick,” Naysmith said.
The Prebbleton vets
encouraged people to get their
pets microchipped and registered
with the NZ Companion Animal
Register.
“The animal register means
that as soon as an animal’s
microchip is scanned by one of
their approved users, they can
contact you and arrange their
safe return,” the vet said on
Facebook.
Judy’s life choice: Assisted dying
• By Dellwyn Moylan
JUDY SWANEY feels at peace.
The 72-year-old retired aged
care worker has made a major
decision in recent months – to
have an assisted death.
Judy has terminal cancer and
is receiving palliative care. She
lives at home with her husband
of 54 years, Dennis.
Judy’s cancer journey began
in 2010, when she started to feel
unwell but did not know what
was wrong with her.
‘‘I was unaware I had it, but
knew I was tired and, while hungry,
didn’t want to eat. They discovered
a two-and-half kilogram
tumour pressing on my kidney
and spleen,’’ she said.
Judy had surgery to have the
two organs removed.
She suffered a stroke in 2014,
and was diagnosed with breast
cancer in 2015.
‘‘Three years ago I was told
I had stage four metastasised
cancer in my other kidney, lungs,
bladder and gallbladder,’’ she
said.
‘‘My gallbladder specialist told
me three years ago this month,
have your gallbladder out within
two weeks or you will be dead in
two months.”
Judy knew she did not want
more surgery, so refused.
‘At my
memorial
service,
I want
fun and
laughter.
I want
funny
stories
to be
told’
– Judy
Swaney
FULFILLED: Judy Swaney, busy knitting for charity, is
looking back on a life well lived.
Three years later, she is still
here today, but knows her time is
limited.
She finds comfort in the fact
while it was never a choice to
have cancer, she does have a
choice on where and when she
will die.
‘‘It’s scary and you have no
control. Making my own decision
with Dennis’ and my family’s
support has given me back
some control,’’ Judy said.
‘‘Having made the choice, we
now have time to talk about it,’’
she said.
‘‘My funeral has been planned
for three years. But given we
CHARACTERS: Judy bringing laughter to Rosebank Home
and Hospital residents in 2022, alongside diversional
therapists Debbie Shaw and Nic Adlam.
now have time, we can tweak
things, and I know it’s all sorted.
So when the time comes, Dennis
and the family don’t have to
think what I would like, or stress
about it.
‘‘At my memorial service, I
want fun and laughter. I want
funny stories to be told.
‘‘Through my life, especially
my work in aged care, I have met
so many characters who had so
many funny stories to share with
their families, and that’s what I
want.’’
Judy also finds comfort knowing
Dennis, and her children,
grandchildren and wider family,
will not have to see her suffer a
painful death.
‘‘After watching my dad suffer
and pass away from lung cancer
30-plus years ago, I didn’t want
that,’’ Judy said.
Today as Judy lives her life, she
finds some days are better than
others.
She is grateful for pain management,
courtesy of her GP,
medical specialists and Ashburton
Hospital palliative care team.
The Ashburton resident enjoys
simple things, such as reading
and knitting, while conserving
her energy for days when she can
spend time with her family or go
out for coffee with friends and
former colleagues.
She and Dennis have had a life
full of wonderful family memories
together.
The couple brought up three
sons and have five grandchildren.
Judy remembers where it all
began when she met Dennis at
the age of just 15.
She said she was invited to his
21st the following year, but her
dad was not too sure he wanted
his daughter going, as he had
never met Dennis.
So a meeting was arranged
at her home. But when Dennis
turned up, he was not too sure
how things would go as he was
greeted by her dad who happened
to be carrying his deer
stalking knife at the time.
‘‘It all went well and we got on
fine,’’ Dennis said.
Judy and Dennis are grateful
for the law change in New
Zealand, which allowed assisted
dying to become legal in 2021.
Judy said she was a supporter
even before she began to consider
it as an option for herself. After
her terminal cancer diagnosis
three years ago, she wanted to
find out more, but learned there
TOGETHER:
Dennis
and Judy
Swaney.
Inset –
on their
wedding
day 54
years ago.
were no doctors in Ashburton
offering it. So she turned to
Google.
‘‘We found a doctor in
Christchurch who was very
switched on, very encouraging
and very easy to talk to,’’ Judy
said.
‘‘Doctors aren’t allowed to
raise it with a patient, there are
no pamphlets in doctors’ waiting
rooms about it because they can’t
be seen to be influencing people,’’
Judy said.
Recently, she and Dennis
took part in a Zoom meeting to
participate in an assisted dying
survey. Dennis suggested they
needed to get the message out to
people that this is an option.
‘‘It shouldn’t be hidden away
where medical people can’t put it
out there as an option along with
other options,’’ he said.
Judy initially did not meet
one of the main criteria, being
that her illness would be likely
to cause her death within six
months. But by January this
year she did meet that criteria,
something two doctors had to
agree on.
‘‘I was then asked to choose the
date I wanted to die,’’ Judy said.
She can choose to bring the
date forward if she wishes.
Equally, if she does not wish to
proceed on the chosen date, she
can go ahead with another date.
Judy is aware of different views
around assisted dying, but said
for herself and her family it has
been the right choice.
‘‘For some people their
religious beliefs mean they are
opposed to assisted dying,’’ Judy
said.
‘‘Or they haven’t seen a loved
one suffer,’’ Dennis said.
While her family, including
her 93-year-old mum and six
siblings, were heartbroken at the
thought of losing her, they all
supported her choice.
Street racers targeted in police action
FIVE VEHICLES were
impounded and police handed
out 50 fines during a crackdown
on illegal street racing across the
city over the weekend.
The antisocial road user
team and strategic traffic unit
were out in force on Saturday
night and Sunday morning.
Sergeant Luke Vaughan from
the antisocial road user team
said police were “monitoring and
disrupting antisocial road user
activity across the city”.
Police issued 50 infringements
and green-stickered eight cars
that “did not meet the requirements
to be driven on the
road”, Vaughan said.
“Another five (vehicles) were
impounded for sustained loss of
traction from previous incidents.”
Early on Sunday morning,
police also broke up several
unauthorised street and drag
racing incidents on Riccarton
Rd, Memorial Ave and in
Phillipstown and Wigram.
The operation started at the
‘Cars and Cameras’ event at
Bottle Lake Forest on Saturday
evening.
Vaughan said it was “a well
organised and positive gettogether
of car enthusiasts”.
“As the evening wore on, the
operation moved to monitoring
cruising activity and disrupting
several planned ‘skid meets’.”
Vaughan said one driver fled
in a vehicle believed to be stolen.
Inquiries to locate the driver were
ongoing.
The operation marked the start
of a wider crackdown on antisocial
driving behaviour across the
city.
“Police take antisocial road
user activity extremely seriously
because it not only puts those involved
at risk, but bystanders and
members of the community.
“If you see illegal road activity,
call police via 111 if it’s happening
now or 105 if it’s after the fact.
Alternatively, you can report any
information anonymously via
Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.”
CRACKDOWN: A police operation targeting illegal street racers saw five vehicles
impounded, eight cars green-stickered due to safety failures, and 50 infringement notices
for various offences were handed out.
THE MAN WHO murdered
a former Mongrel Mob gang
member in a Sydenham housing
complex has been sentenced to
life in prison.
Motu Smith will not be eligible
for parole for 14 years and six
months. He was sentenced by
Justice Jonathan Eaton yesterday
after a High Court jury found
him guilty earlier this year of
murdering Daniel Hawkins in the
bedroom of his Brougham St unit
on April 24, 2021.
His sentences for the offending
– ranging from three to four years
– will be served concurrently, The
New Zealand Herald reported.
At Smith’s trial in February,
the court heard how he inflicted
severe head injuries then cut
Hawkins' throat and stabbed him
in the neck.
Smith then took off in the victim’s
car, leaving him to die on his
bed in a pool of his own blood.
The Crown said Smith’s actions
were part of a “spree” of offending
during which he violently
attacked two other men – also
fleeing in their vehicles.
But Smith argued he was acting
in “self defence” when he injured
Hawkins.
Hawkins was a former Mongrel
Mob member and was facing active
charges when he died.
Following Smith’s sentencing
yesterday, Detective Inspector
Nicola Reeves thanked members
of the community who had provided
valuable information and
support throughout the investigation
and trial.
“I would also like to thank all
the investigation team for their
professionalism and tireless work
COURT 11
SERIOUS INCIDENTS: A man’s appeal against his sentence on charges
of strangulation, threatening to kill and assault has been dismissed. The
victim – the man’s partner – had experienced “terror”, the judge said.
PHOTO: GETTY
‘I truly thought I
was going to die’
• By Ric Stevens
A VERY DRUNK man kicked open a
bathroom door and grabbed his partner,
holding her off the ground by the throat
and shaking her until she lost control of
her bladder.
She lost control again moments later
when Thomas Hoani Tuhou threw her
onto a couch, grabbed her throat again
with both hands and squeezed until she
could not breathe.
“I truly thought I was going to die,” the
woman said later in a victim impact statement.
She said Tuhou watched true crime
shows and had once told her “strangulation
was the perfect murder”.
Her ordeal included other assaults, during
which she scratched Tuhou’s face to try
to get free, yelled from a window for help
and then ran outside the house, only to be
dragged back in.
Eventually, she managed to break free
and call 111.
Tuhou, 36, later pleaded guilty to two
charges of strangulation, one charge of
threatening to kill and one of assaulting a
person in a family relationship.
He was jailed for two years and three
months by Judge Brian Callaghan in the
district court in June 2023.
Tuhou appealed against his sentence to
the High Court at Christchurch, arguing
that it was “manifestly excessive”.
Justice Rachel Dunningham dismissed
the appeal.
Tuhou’s lawyers argued similar cases
had begun with a lower starting point
for sentencing.
They also argued the assaults were an
“uncharacteristic demonstration of violence”
and he had not offended in that way
before.
However, Justice Dunningham said the
victim had experienced “terror” during
the attack.
“It is important to recognise that, in the
present case, there were two very serious
strangulation events, both of which caused
the victim to become incontinent,” she
said.
“Furthermore, there were elements of
strangulation in the associated assaults.
“The summary of facts refers to two
further incidents of grabbing her around
the neck, the first of which involved lifting
her off the ground.
“Also aggravating this offending was the
threat to kill made during one of the serious
incidents of strangulation.”
Involuntary urination is a common
response to being choked. It is one of
the things victims are asked about when
health workers seek information from
them after they have been attacked.
A new offence of strangulation, or
impeding breathing, was introduced
in 2018 after a Law Commission report
found that 71 per cent of homicide victims
in a domestic violence setting had been
strangled earlier in the relationship.
It carries a maximum of seven years
in prison.
OUR OLD FRIENDS
I’ve wanted to write a piece about caring for
a senior citizen for a while now. It’s actually
an enormous privilege to have your friend
make it into your golden years and rather
than giving to you, it’s our turn to give back.
My beautiful
companion
Lola is 15
years old in
September.
She has
overcome
huge hurdles
to get to
her geriatric
years. She’s
a three time cancer survivor - kidney cancer,
anal gland cancer and a soft tissue sarcoma.
She lives with spinal disease, weakness
and never complains. She has allergic
pad disease and laryngeal paralysis. She’s
endured every test imaginable including
MRI and CT and undergone Chemotherapy
when she was 5 years old.
She has the “Heart of a Lion” and wants
nothing more than to have her family close.
She’s now earnt her place in my consult
room and
mostly
snores
through my
morning
patients.
I love
catching
up with
my senior
patients.
Most of
them know
the drill and
even know
which room is mine. To do my job right I
need to pay attention to the signals they
give me, thoroughly examine them and pull
great histories from their owners. Most of my
elderly patients need me to do something
for them so I need to be always on my game.
new smells, exercise their joints and take in
the world. Push them and build fitness and
• A lean bodyweight
• Time with you and your family, allowed
to be involved and included in activities
and family get togethers
• Hydrotherapy and physiotherapy for
mental wellbeing, mobilisation of joints
and strength
• 6 monthly urine and blood testing to be
alerted to early signs of disease
• Regular scheduled parasite control
(worms and fleas)
• Vaccinations to offer protection against
preventable diseases
• Six monthly Blood Pressure measurements
• Vet check ups if things aren’t right, rather
adopting the wait and see approach
• Comfortable orthopaedic bedding
Osteoarthritis
• Treat what needs treating, especially
osteoarthritis. Don’t allow them to suffer
in silence. Their senior years are when they
really rely on you
• Keeping nails trimmed. Overgrown nails
can affect gait and cause lameness
• Maintain great dental health as we are
aware teeth covered in calculus can lead
to other secondary diseases
Many older patients become incontinent
with age. Urinary incontinence can be
successfully managed with oral medication,
fecal incontinence is harder to manage
but I have found adding Fibor to Lolas diet
decreases this.
Deafness is another hurdle to overcome.
Lola went deaf very quickly of which there is
no treatment. Luckily she learnt hand signals
and can hear certain tones in my voice. Their
world can become confusing and scary so
they need to have eye contact with you to
understand what you want and lots of touch
and reassurance.
Dementia and senility can affect us all and
our K9 friends are no different. We term
this disease “Cognitive Dysfunction”. They
confuse day and night, lose their social
graces, appear dazed and vacant at times,
lose control of tioleting, panic when left
alone and can start vocalising. There are
some medications, diets and supplements
(medium chain fatty acids) that can help in
this area.
Blindness, mainly through Cataracts, is
another common disease seen. Pets cope
remarkably well. We are extremely lucky to
have Dr Steve Heap with huge expertise in
Ophthalmology and cataract removal. Not
every cataract patient is a surgical candidate.
Steve performed 2 cataract surgeries on
dogs last week with success.
SCREAMING sale signs upon
are getting pretty clever when it
comes to the ways supermarkets
Yet we still
Consumer
behaviourist
at Canterbury University Ekant
Veer has done lots of work analysing
what people buy, and breaks
it down in the first episode of new
RNZ podcast Thrift.
Look up and down and, if
you can, leave the kids at
home
“So if you found the marshmallows,
and they’re at eye level, look
down at the bottom shelf, there
might be cheaper ones,” Veer
says.
Product placement also plays
around with shorter shoppers.
“In the confectionary aisle,
the highest gross profit items are
actually at the eye level of a child
because they know that kids are
more likely to pester mum and
dad for something that they can
see.”
So – if you can – come on your
prices, and don’t cave to the pleas
of others.
Try to ignore the end-ofaisle
“They’re usually a quite high
you’ll run away with it.”
Try instead to focus on shopping
the perimeters of the supermarket
and then just do the aisles
you need.
It’s not time for a little
treat
It’s pretty well known not to
take a rumbling belly to the
supermarket, but if you’re feeling
grumpy it will pay to try and
shake that before you go in to
spend.
“You might find fruit and
vegetables are typically first because
they [we] feel they need to
that and then alcohol, chocolate,
sweets, high gross profit items
would be further along in the
journey because people feel like
they can reward themselves.”
Don’t give in to the
compromise option
“If you’ve been told to purchase
a jar of artichoke hearts,” Veer
explains, “and you’ve got three in
front of you, probably around 70
per cent of people compromise
and get the middle one” – not
the most expensive, not the least
expensive, but that average jar.
He warns some retailers will
create new products, or juggle
price points, to shift demand
because they know full well how
many of us opt for middle of the
road.
Be aware of heuristics
When you don’t know much, you
will start looking for other triggers
that will draw you in – like
trendy labels, stickers proclaiming
awards and what appears to
be the biggest discount.
These heuristics – mental
shortcuts for making calls in a
quick way – will try and sting
you, so be mindful.
Gamify your shop
A visit to the supermarket can be
fun. Veer suggests adding some
playful elements to your visit –
maybe a time limit to get in and
out so you’re not wooed by the
sales or sweets. Maybe it would be
fun to see how many dollars you
can save this week.
Set yourself a goal and it will
help keep you mindful and make
it more fun.
Peace Train keeps
track of season’s haul
THE PEACE Train has completed another
bumper season with almost 10,000
passengers taking a ride.
The miniature train, which was gifted by
the Yusuf Islam Foundation following the
2019 terror attacks, operates free to ride
along a track in the Botanic Gardens.
The 2023-24 season ran from September
3 to April 28 and saw the train chug along
the tracks for 26 weekends with a total of
9667 passengers.
The train stopped in at the Mainfreight
Christmas Parade, the Unity Sunday event
and the EID Festival over the season, and
had its busiest day on September 10 with
524 passengers.
There are four carriages which can each
take four adults, meaning there were well
over 500 runs over the months.
“We’ve had another fantastic season
this year, and the train remains as
popular as ever,” said city council parks
programmes and partnership manager Dr
Roslyn Kerr.
“We know that families and kids love
riding the train and this is really thanks to
our volunteers who keep it running. We’re
incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated
group who are so enthusiastic about the
work they do.”
For volunteer Grant Lange, it’s the lasting
memories of spreading joy that make
the work worth it.
“An unforgettable moment from the
season just gone is of a young disabled girl
in a specially designed wheelchair with
breathing apparatus, who did not want to
ride the train,” Lange said.
“Her family were with her and managed
to convince her to ride in the caboose,
which has wheelchair access. In the end
she absolutely loved it and her wide smile
at the completion of her ride was worth so
much to everyone watching.”
The train was operated by 31 volunteers
over the season, and Kerr said they’re
always looking for new recruits. To find
Collaboration, education, innovation
The city’s innovative
health precinct marks
its 10th anniversary this
month. Kim Thomas
reports
IT’S 10.30AM on a brisk autumn
day and the ground floor of the
Manawa building on Antigua St is
humming.
Doctors, nurses, and students
from a variety of health professions
cluster at tables in the building’s
café to meet or just catch up
and enjoy a coffee.
Next to the café is an open plan
common area with ample work
pods, whiteboards, and other
paraphernalia for students to meet
or work in the heart of a building
that now forms a central part of
the city’s health precinct.
Te Papa Hauora, Christchurch
Health Precinct, was a product
of the post-quake government
‘blueprint’ that divided the central
city into precincts.
It was officially established in
May 2014 with the formation of
an advisory council comprising
representatives of the major
tertiary institutions involved in
health in the city and the Canterbury
DHB. Mana whenua are
represented by Ngāi Tuahuriri.
Peter Townsend has been
independent chair of the advisory
UNIQUE: Peter Townsend, right, independent chair of Te Papa Hauora, Christchurch Health
Precinct’s advisory board, says the Manawa building is an example of the precinct’s success.
It houses almost 2000 nursing, midwifery, and medical imaging students, Health NZ teams,
and Canterbury University’s health sciences division.
council since July 2019. He is,
perhaps predictably, a huge fan
of the precinct and what the collaboration
has achieved over the
past decade.
“Te Papa Hauora is unique
in New Zealand. Nowhere else
are big and small organisations
involved in health research,
education and innovation coming
together with a common aim
– to improve things for their
community.”
Townsend likens Te Papa
Hauora to ‘‘someone who organises
really good dinner parties
with lots of great people around
the table’’.
“At that party you get to chat
with someone interested in the
same thing as you but coming
from a different place. You make
connections and spark ideas that
likely wouldn’t have occurred if
you weren’t there.”
Townsend says Te Papa Hauora
is a physical area where healthrelated
organisations are located.
“More importantly, it is healthrelated
organisations working
together to find clever, pragmatic
and cost-effective solutions to
pressing issues in health.”
Pressing issues include ensuring
the next generation of health
professionals are well-prepared
for their roles and can work in
interprofessional teams, as well as
limited funding for much-needed
research.
Townsend says one clear example
of the precinct’s success is
the Manawa building. It houses
almost 2000 nursing, midwifery,
and medical imaging students,
Health NZ teams, and Canterbury
University’s health sciences division.
It also hosts a busy schedule
of Te Papa Hauora-led public
health talks, on topics ranging
from Covid-19 to ageing well,
and leadership programmes for
students.
brought together in unique precinct
Manawa has a high-fidelity
simulation suite where a range of
health professionals and students
practice medical scenarios in a safe
environment before encountering
them in real life.
“Recognising the value a
building in the heart of the health
precinct could offer, Ara and
the then Canterbury DHB took
the lead in developing Manawa.
Without that joint effort it would
not be here,” Townsend said.
Today, almost all sites within
the precinct are occupied.
Christchurch Hospital has
been redeveloped; the Pacific
Medical Association occupies a
multi-storey building on Oxford
Tce; and the Otago University
Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka are well
underway with construction of a
new $175 million building.
Townsend says Te Papa Hauora
has helped bring health conferences
to the city and supported
health workforce initiatives such
as a unique nursing qualification
developed and offered jointly by
Ara and Canterbury University.
It also supported the city’s Youth
Advisory Council to produce
videos for young people on mental
health and endometriosis featuring
medical specialists.
To maximise limited research
funding, Te Papa Hauora supported
the establishment of the
Research for Children Aotearoa
LEARNING: The health precinct’s Manawa building offers
ample space for health students to study.
collaboration where experts from
different universities and health
organisations work together on
research that improves the health,
education and well-being of our
youngest citizens, Townsend said.
Another key activity is bringing
technology developers and innovators
together with health professionals
to ensure innovations are
suitable for the health system.
Townsend says the precinct’s
success comes from the concerted
effort of organisations involved.
“People are busy and often don’t
have the time to see what others
are doing or how they could work
together. Those involved in Te
Papa Hauora are committed to
collaboration and doing things
together, and it is this joint mahi
that has made things better.”
Pip Griffin is Te Papa Hauora’s
executive officer. She says there are
ample opportunities to build on
and extend successful initiatives.
New ideas include developing a
health and wellbeing space for the
community in the Parakiore Recreation
and Sport Centre; assisting
the Youth Advisory Council to
create more health resources for
young people; and becoming one
of the South Island’s hubs for a
national medical tech initiative.
“It is very exciting to be celebrating
a decade of activity, but more
exciting is the difference we can
make in future. We are an amazing
cooperative group and firing
on all cylinders. The best is yet to
come.”
BRIGHT FUTURE: Te Papa Hauora executive officer Pip
Griffin says the organisation has plans to build on and
extend successful initiatives within the precinct.
Council motives questioned by readers
THe whole purpose in setting up
CCHL was to enable the council
owned companies to operate in
a commercial manner free of
interference from councillors,
thus maximising long term
benefits for the council and hence
the city.
It seems the current councillors
have a different vision for the
companies; they want to use
the companies to advance their
personal agendas in the short
term.
I also wonder if this is linked
to councillors‘ opposition to the
Tarras airport initiative, which is
in fact a long term strategic move,
exactly what a well-managed
commercial company should be
doing.
I am strongly opposed to the
councillors’ current approach
to CCHL. Ironically they are
demonstrating why it’s so
important to have the armslength
structure in the first place.
– Vic Allen
Are certain members of council
just looking for corporate “yes
men” to run CCHL, to be willing
puppets to political whims?
Or are they actually going
to find experienced business
operators who can come up with
sound business strategies in the
long-term?
Makes you wonder who the real
Cashmere squad steps up to fill
absent striker’s goal-scoring role
• By Sam Coughlan
CASHMERE Technical have
kept on winning despite the
loss of star marksman Garbhan
Coughlan.
The Irishman, who has scored
18 goals in just five games, has
returned to his homeland to
get married. Tech coach Dan
Schwarz expects he will be away
for a couple of months.
His absence hasn’t hindered
Tech, who beat Nomads 3-0 at
the weekend to remain top of the
Southern League.
Coughlan dominated the scoring
charts last season as well with
28 goals, but at
times some of his
teammates struggled
to contribute
– their nexthighest
scorer had
just eight.
This has not
been an issue this
season, with wing
Lyle Matthysen
the league’s equal-third top
Dan
Schwarz
scorer with nine goals and Tech
have scored eight goals in the
two games Coughlan missed
this season – the 3-0 win over
Nomads and a 5-1 triumph in
round one against Dunedin City
Royals.
“The pleasing thing for me is
we’ve got goals coming from all
• By Sam Coughlan
COMMITMENT is key for the
Riccarton Knights in what has
been a season of firsts.
The Knights claimed their first
win over Linwood in five years
and won the Jonny Pitman Cup
for the first time in 10 years after
beating Hornby.
Now the side, who top the
Canterbury Rugby League premiership
after beating Halswell
Hornets 28-22 at the weekend, are
chasing their first finals appearance
since 2015 .
Head coach Sam Brown says
the uptick in results is down to the
commitment and buy-in from the
team.
“We had an extremely good preseason,
which has been followed
continuously week-in and weekout
with player commitment to
training and the style of footy that
we want to play.
“But we weren’t expecting to be
where we are at the moment.”
over the park at the moment, and
obviously we’re scoring quite a
few, but it’s varied around who’s
getting the goals.”
Wing Lyle Matthysen is the
league’s equal-second top scorer
with nine, and he scored in the
win over Nomads.
But he, alongside midfielder
Sam Lapslie, defender Tom
Schwarz, and assistant coach Dan
Terris, will be heading to Ireland
to celebrate with Coughlan for
the ceremony in mid-July.
Knights’ allegiance
paying dividends
VETERAN: Kolio Vailu’u
played his 200th premier
game for Riccarton.
Riccarton dropped their first
two games of the season, but since
then have gone on a five-match
winning run to dispatch every
other side in the competition.
Brown said while it’s fantastic
to be able to chalk off milestones,
he doesn’t want it to count for
nothing.
“The competition is pretty
close, there’s only a win or a loss
between the majority of the teams.
Schwarz doesn’t expect his side
to struggle in that period.
“We’ve got some great young
players in the group and some
players that are knocking on the
door and asking for more game
time.
“So we’re in a great position to
hopefully keep on doing what
we’ve been doing.”
Tech have so far withstood
every challenge, unbeaten at the
top of the league, but Schwarz
thinks Saturday’s opponents
“It’s fantastic but it’s going to
count for nothing if, at the end of
the season, we’re not competing,
or we’re not in that top-four spot.”
Riccarton also celebrated the
200th appearance of club legend
Kolio Vailu’u on Saturday.
“That’s a fantastic milestone for
Kolio and then for the rest of the
players to turn up and put in the
work for him, it’s fantastic,” said
Brown.
Riccarton take on Eastern
Eagles at Wainoni Park this
Ferrymead Bays will be tough.
“Every time we play Bays, we
struggle. They’ve got a lot of
hard-working players, a lot of
tough players, and a couple of
goal-scorers in the ranks this
season.
“We’re expecting it to be one
of the toughest games that we’ve
had this season, and that’s what
we’re preparing for.”
The other games on Saturday
games that we’ve played so far this
Farewell Sam, you deserved better
WE NOW KNOW Sam Cane
will be spending his remaining
playing days at Suntory
Sungoliath with his family in
Japan.
But how will he be remembered
back in New Zealand?
There seems to be an attitude
here if you are not overly
charismatic, don’t have a media
friendly smile or in Sam’s case
follow one of New Zealand and
Canterbury’s greats in Richie
McCaw, you are under even
greater scrutiny.
Remember the days of another
All Black captain in Reuben
Thorne, who was constantly
questioned by the media and
public (outside of Canterbury)
about his selection in the All
Blacks?
Look at his career, representing
the All Blacks from 1999-2007:
He had four different coaches.
They all can’t have been wrong.
Yet he doesn’t get the recognition
across the country he deserves because
he beat his own drum and
didn’t become a media darling.
Cane may have fallen into that
category.
Following McCaw would
always be tough, but Cane was in
the All Blacks for 12 years, over
two coaching groups, and ended
up as captain.
Take the constant negativity
Bevan Sisson
Rugby matters
around him away and let’s look
at facts.
As a rugby player he was brutal
in defence and could create multiple
turnovers at the breakdown.
A great student of the game
tactically, and incredibly tough,
Cane came back from a severe
neck fracture in 2018, a number
of concussions, pectoral and
shoulder injuries in 2021 and a
severe back injury in 2023 before
the World Cup. Yet he managed
to have the mental strength to
come back after all those setbacks,
when many would have taken the
retirement path.
During his time, people were
constantly criticising his game,
but you have to ask who else
was better? Not just as good,
but better. Over his tenure there
was no one that demanded the 7
jersey should be theirs.
Recently Ardie Savea has
shown he would be a force in any
position in the back row, but then
we needed him at 8.
Cane’s game against Ireland at
the World Cup was a class above,
but unfortunately, the red card in
the final didn’t give him the finish
MALIGNED: Sam Cane was in the All Blacks for 12 years, over two coaching groups, and
ended up as captain but still faced constant criticism.
to the tournament he and New
Zealand craved.
Will we see Sam Cane in an
ABs jersey again? I would like
to think yes. No one deserves
to get to 100 tests more than
Cane (currently on 95) but those
conversations would have already
been decided and unless there is
a series of injuries, his time may
be done.
If he does fade away from
the public eye, he should be
remembered as humble, hard
working and with a team-first
attitude. So, I will raise a cold
Waikato Draft in his honour this
weekend and wish him and the
family all the best.
• Sisson is a former player,
representative coach and
New Zealand age group
selector
Burnside’s recent success built on belief
• By Sam Coughlan
POSITIVITY HAS been the
theme of the season for Burnside
as they lead the Christchurch
Metro competition as it ticks
over the halfway stage.
Burnside bounced back in style
from their first loss of the season
against Lincoln University
two weeks ago, dispatching
Christchurch 45-7 at the
weekend.
“We flipped it as a real positive,
taking a loss,” said co-captain
Joel Lam, who scored in the win.
“To get that earlier on kind-of
made it a little bit easier for us.
(It) took pressure off us from
being unbeaten.
“We were four-from-four and
there was a lot of talk on the
street about us going unbeaten
already.”
This weekend they’ll take on
University of Canterbury, who
currently sit fourth, in a DCL
Shield challenge – University
won it off HSOB last week.
“It’ll be obviously in the back
of our minds, but it’s not our
ultimate goal”, said Lam of the
shield challenge.
The last time Burnside held the
shield was in 2021 – Lam’s debut
season.
“It doesn’t come around very
often, but when it does, obviously
everyone’s aware of what’s up for
grabs”, he said.
“But I think we’re all just
focused on putting out a good
side’s 45-7 win over Christchurch.
performance and the rest will
take care of itself.”
Burnside finished 10th last
season but Lam doesn’t think
their position this year comes as
a surprise.
“Going into the season you’re
always wanting to take out the
competition, so for you to believe
in what you can do goes a long
way.
“At the start of the season,
with the team we had assembled,
we all believed we could be
contenders this year.”
The other matches on Saturday
see a lot of crossover between
the top and bottom halves of the
table.
THE CRUSADERS are
back at home this weekend
– but they know the fate of
their season is now out of
their hands.
The red-and-blacks play
the table-topping Blues on
Saturday night at Apollo
Projects Stadium knowing
anything less than a win
will end their slim playoff
hopes.
Even then, they’ll be relying
on the eighth-placed
Fijian Drua to lose to the
Highlanders on Sunday in
Dunedin.
“There’s still a chance,’’
assistant coach Matt Todd
said during the week.
“While there’s still a
mathematical chance on
the table, certainly it’s our
goal.
“We know we probably
need help from other teams,
but we’ll worry about what
we can control and put all
our focus into that.’’
This week they welcome
back flanker Ethan
Blackadder and centre
Levi Aumua to the starting
lineup, while Tamaiti
Williams and Dallas
McLeod come onto the
bench, the quartet all
returning from injury.
Captain Scott Barrett is
not fit to play, continuing
his recovery from a back
injury sustained against the
Reds two weeks ago.
The Blues will confirm
top spot with a win if the
Hurricanes lose to the
Chiefs on Friday night.
• Kick-off is at 7.05pm.
We need your help to fill our beds.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has
23 beds for tamariki to stay during
times of whānau stress or crisis. On
average just 17 of these beds are filled
due to resourcing constraints.
Every empty bed is a missed
opportunity to support a child in need.
Donate today to give Canterbury
tamariki a safe place to sleep.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides
short term emergency or planned respite care
for tamariki when they need extra support due
to complications at home.
Cholmondeley is an independent charity
and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to
run. 20% of this figure is met by Government
funding, and the remaining 80% comes from
the generous support of the Canterbury
community.
World stage beckons for
St Andrew’s bagpiper
• By Claire Reid
A TALENTED teenage
bagpiper has been selected
to take part in two of the
most prestigious bagpiping
competitions in the world.
Maggie McConnochie, 14,
recently won the New Zealand
Under 21 Piobrairechd and the
Comunn na Piobairechd silver
medal – and has since been
invited to compete in seven
competitions in Scotland in
August. It includes two of the
most respected solo bagpiping
events in the world, the
Argyllshire Gathering and the
Northern Meeting.
The St Andrew’s College student
was the youngest person
in the New Zealand awards
categories.
“It feels pretty good, but it
feels unreal. It’s really exciting,”
she said of the result.
Maggie is likely to be the
school, homework and sports.
She also plays at rest homes and
took part in the Rolleston Anzac
parade in 2023, and led the
dawn service parade in Twizel
this year.
Maggie first picked up
the bagpipes when she was
9-years-old. Under the tutelage
of Richard Hawke (NZOM),
she has gone from strength to
strength.
“Maggie wouldn’t be the
piper she is withou the support
of her tutors. She’s really grateful
for Richard’s expertise and
guidance,” Delwyn said.
Maggie hopes her success
will inspire other girls to
get into bagpiping.
Females are significantly
underrepresented in the solo
piping world, making up about
just six per cent.
A TOWNHOUSE which a real
impossible to sell because of
its condition instead sparked a
bidding war at auction.
The three-bedroom,
two-bathroom property on
Winchester St, Merivale, sold for
$465,000 at Thursday’s auction,
which saw three cash buyers
fighting for it.
she was “very
