SUMNER WAVE’S rise
up the Christchurch
Metro Premier table has
continued with an amazing
comeback win over Sydenham
at the weekend.
Sumner’s 35-26 win was
personified by centre Waitangi
Tuisaga’s late 70-m intercept
try to seal the upset win.
It puts the Wave fifth on
the table.
They play eighth-placed
Linwood at home on Saturday,
which is also Sumner’s club
day.
Sumner trailed 26-7 at the
break against the competition
leader. After defending
their line early in the second
half, the Wave put on 28
unanswered points in the final
half-hour.
The Wave, who have won
their last three games, are now
level on points with Marist Albion
and Canterbury University
but behind both on points
difference. They are just one
point behind Sydenham who
are now second after Saturday’s
loss and Burnside’s win over
Christchurch.
The Wave meets Linwood on
Saturday, who have lost three
in a row, coincidentally against
the same three teams Sumner
have beaten in recent weeks –
Shirley, Sydenham and Marist
Albion.
Kick-off at St Leonard’s
Square is at 2.45pm after the
Colts side play Linwood at 1pm.
Data shows
fewer crashes
on SH75
since speed
reduction
• By Dylan Smits
CRASH DATA suggests lower
speed limits have reduced crashes
on the length of State Highway 75
by about 20 per cent.
Transportation
expert Glen
Koorey crunched
the numbers and
found in the three
years before the
speed limit decrease
to 80km/h
in September
2022, there was
an average of 10.3
Glen
Koorey
fatal or serious injuries per year
along SH75 from Halswell to
Akaroa.
Koorey has researched the
numbers after publicity and debate
over whether the SH75 speed
limit should be increased.
Banks Peninsula MP Vanessa
Weenink last month changed her
mind on increasing it after reviewing
data from rural Canterbury
area police commander Peter
Cooper, which they say shows a
decrease in crashes after the speed
limit change.
The data retrieved by Koorey is
for the entire state highway from
Halswell to Akaroa. It did not
differentiate between the Halswell
to Little River and Little River to
Akaroa stretches.
It shows in the 19 months since
the decrease, the numbers have
dropped to 8.2 serious injuries a
year, with no deaths.
Leaf-grinding ‘goat’ is on the job
THERE’S A new “goat” in
town and its rolling around
Christchurch streets helping
munch through the blanket of
autumn leaves.
City council contractors are
busy with leaf fall season under
way now till July.
But this year they’ve got a
new tool in their kit – a few new
trucks, including one nicknamed
the “goat”.
“We’re always looking for
ways to work more efficiently
throughout leaf fall season. One
of the trucks on our roads can
now grind the leaves into small
pieces, which is why they’ve
called it the goat,” city streets
maintenance manager Steve Guy
said.
“It also reduces the number of
times they have to empty a load
so they can do more streets at a
time.”
There’s also another new truck
rolling around Christchurch
streets with a remote-controlled
snorkel.
“This new truck means we no
longer need a person on the road
manually moving the snorkel
around. The person who previously
operated the snorkel can
instead use a leaf blower to direct
leaves into an area where the
snorkel can reach like around
cars,” Guy said.
And a final new truck set to
be launched at the end of the
month, dubbed “Noo-Noo” after
the vacuum in the 90s television
show The Teletubbies.
“Noo-Noo is going to be a
great addition for our contactors.
One of these holds about the
same amount of leaves as three
smaller trucks.”
Guy said it’s important for
people to remember that contractors
are not able to sweep all
of the leaves in the city.
“We’ve got five trucks moving
through 980 high leaf fall areas
throughout the city so our teams
focus on areas where the leaves
inhibit stormwater, compromise
safety and inhibit the growth of
underlying plants.”
Guy said residents shouldn’t
worry if a sweeper truck leaves
halfway through a street.
“This doesn’t mean they’re
done with the job, just that the
truck is full and needs to be
emptied,” he said.
“Please be patient. Our
teams work hard to clear leaves
as quickly as possible, but
sometimes heavy rainfall or high
winds can cause more leaves to
fall in a shorter period. We don’t
want to receive reports of abuse
when our teams are simply doing
their jobs.”
How you can help
• Reduce build-up by
clearing leaves from your
own berm and garden and
putting them into your
green bin.
• Put leaves in your
compost or pile them at
the back of garden to break
down.
• Please don’t dispose of
your leaves after your street
has been cleared and then
call up for the street to be
swept again. This slows
down contractors.
impact of travelling slower
• From page 1
Koorey is the principal
transportation engineer and
planner for civil engineering
company ViaStrada and
accessed the figures from
NZ Transport Agency Waka
Kotahi’s crash analysis system.
He believes it shows the
lower speed limit has worked
in reducing crashes.
“It might still be early days,
but this repeats the results
I have seen everywhere else
across New Zealand where
safer speed limits have been
introduced, casualties go
down.”
Weenink
said the 20
per cent figure
was a smaller
decrease than
in the data she
received from
Cooper, but it
still showed Vanessa
the speed Weenink
limit change
has been effective.
“Twenty per cent is a lot.
It’s a trend that’s probably
significant.”
She said her National-led
coalition Government has still
not set a date for reviewing
state highway speed limits as
part of its ‘Accelerate NZ’ plan.
In Weenink’s view, safety
is of “prominent” importance
when reviewing the limit, but
not the only consideration.
“If there was only a one per
cent decrease, it would be
different than with the more
significant numbers we’re
seeing,” she said.
Koorey said lowering speed
limits was most effective
in reducing the severity of
crashes.
“Lots of other things might
cause crashes, but your
travelling speed determines
the resulting outcome.”
He said this also applied
on straighter section from
Halswell to Little River.
“I get the concerns on the
bits where you’ve got pretty
long straights, but there are
a lot of sharp corners as well.
People don’t necessarily
take those well after they’ve
been zooming along the
straight.”
Koorey said the importance
of road safety outweighed
the impact of slower travel
times.
Babies get the gift of winter woolies
• By Dylan Smits
CUDDLY CLOTHES are being
delivered to babies in need.
Generous Lyttelton knitters are
stitching fit-for-size bonnets and
singlets for premature infants in
Christchurch Hospital’s neonatal
unit.
Most knit from home, but last
week the first Knit and Natter
event took place at the Lyttelton
Community House, which aims
to bring the group together.
Community house social
worker Wendy Joy went through a
premature birth herself more than
“Knowing how precious those
singlets and hats are, they’re often
something we keep forever.”
Joy was inspired by similar
knitting initiatives taking place
in the North Island and her own
personal experience.
“We decided to see if the community
wanted to get involved,
aiming at some people who might
be isolated in their homes but still
want to be part of something.”
So far, there are 13 people knitting
for the initiative, which Joy
hopes will increase.
“One lady who is a really skillful
knitter has developed a pattern to
match the singlets. So what started
off as just singlets is now a singlet
and bonnet set.”
The group has encouraged each
other to share their own experiences
with premature births.
“Lots of really beautiful sharing
of stories like women who have
grandchildren born premature
and are achieving great things in
life now,” she said.
Joy wants to fill at least two bags
worth of clothes, so the group
can donate a large number to the
hospital at once.
Women and children’s health
service manager Michele Pringle
said the hospital is grateful for the
additional supply.
“Woollen clothing is essential
for our slightly bigger pre-term
babies.
“When they are smaller, they
are nursed in incubators to keep
them warm. Once they move into
a cot, we rely on woollen clothing
to help babies regulate their temperature
while they grow.”
Joy hopes more knitters, of any
experience, will join the initiative.
“The beauty of it is, you don’t
have to come here to do it. You
can do it in your own home but
still be a part of something.”
Knit and Natter runs from
10am to noon on Mondays and
Tuesdays at the community house.
• Joy can be contacted at
Tempting autumn tastes and textures
Nigel Slater offers up
a silky leek pie and
crunchy, soft-textured
biscuits to lift the spirits
Leek and parmesan pie
Serves 6-8
You can make this in a large
springform cake tin or bake
freeform on a baking sheet. I
take the middle route, baking
the pie freeform, but using the
outer ring of a 23cm cake tin to
hold the pastry in shape. The ring
isn’t essential, but it does stop the
pastry splitting as it bakes. The
flavour of leeks is less strident if
you cook them without colour,
placing a piece of greaseproof
paper over the surface of the sliced
leeks as well as a lid, so they partly
sauté, partly steam.
Ingredients
For the pastry:
180g butter, fridge cold 300g plain
flour
1 egg yolk
1 egg, lightly beaten
About 50ml water for brushing
For the leeks:
1kg leeks
60g butter
3 heaped tbsp plain flour
100g crème fraîche
80g parmesan, grated
Method
• Make the pastry: cut the butter
into small pieces and rub into
the flour with your thumbs and
fingertips or use a food processor.
• When the mixture resembles
coarse breadcrumbs, add the yolk
and enough water to bring it to
a rollable dough. Using lightly
floured hands, pat the dough into
a ball and refrigerate for half an
hour or so.
• Remove and discard the roots
and very darkest green tips of
the leeks. Slice the leeks thickly
(1-2cm), then wash thoroughly
in cold water to remove any grit
that can get trapped between the
layers. Put them in a colander and
shake dry.
• Melt the butter in a large pan
with a heavy base. Put the leeks
into the pan, cover with a disc
of greaseproof paper or baking
parchment, push it down to cover
the surface, then cover with a
lid and let them cook – a cross
between sautéing and steaming
– for about 25 minutes, lifting
the paper and stirring once or
twice, until they are soft, but not
coloured at all. Season with black
pepper and a little salt.
• Sprinkle the flour over, stir,
and cook for a further 5 minutes.
Stir in the creme fraiche and
grated parmesan, then set aside.
Set the oven at 200°C and place an
empty baking sheet in the oven.
• Line another baking sheet
with baking parchment.
• Lightly oil a 23cm cake tin,
place it on the lined baking
sheet, then place the pastry
over it, pushing it gently down
into the corners and leaving the
overhanging pastry in place. If
you are taking the freeform route
simply lay the pastry on the lined
baking sheet.
• Fill the middle of the
pastry with the leek and cheese
mixture. Now fold the edges
of overhanging pastry over the
filling, leaving the middle free of
pastry. Brush the pastry with the
beaten egg.
• Place this baking sheet on top
of the hot baking sheet already
in the oven and cook for about
45 minutes until the pastry is
golden. If the leeks are colouring
too much, then place a piece of foil
loosely over the surface
• Remove from the oven
and leave to settle for about 10
minutes. If you used a cake tin,
run a palette knife around the
edge to release the pie, then cut
into thick slices and serve.
Peanut butter cookies
Makes roughly 38-40 little
cookies
Ingredients
225g butter
100g caster sugar
100g soft brown sugar
1 egg
150g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
200g peanut butter
Roasted, salted peanuts to
decorate
Method
• Line a baking sheet with baking
parchment. Cut the butter into
small pieces and put them in the
bowl of a food processor with the
sugars. Beat until soft and fluffy.
In a small bowl, beat the egg with
a fork, just enough to mix the
yolks and white together, then
add little by little to the butter and
sugar. (I do this in 3 or 4 stages,
so the mixture doesn’t curdle. If
it does, stir in a spoonful of the
flour.)
• Sieve together the flour and
baking powder, then add to the
mix and continue until the flour
has been incorporated. Stir in
the peanut butter. Set the oven at
170°C.
• Place level heaped tbsps of
the mixture on to a baking sheet,
lined with greaseproof paper,
leaving plenty of room around
each to allow the biscuits to
spread. With the back of a floured
dessert spoon press lightly on each
one to flatten the top.
• Roughly chop the salted,
roasted peanuts, then sprinkle 2g
(about 1 tsp) on each biscuit.
• Bake for about 12 minutes
until the biscuits have spread and
turned pale gold. They should
still be soft to the touch. While
the biscuits are baking, prepare a
second tray and repeat until the
mixture is all used (I do about 4
batches).
• Let the cookies firm up a little
before transferring carefully to a
cooling rack.
BMW’s beefy 2-Series an SUV superhero
VISUALLY, THE BMW 2-Series
is at odds with the company’s
‘Ultimate driving machine persona’,
with its quirky compact urban
mini SUV styling, masking a
vehicle with serious performance
credentials.
This new generation version
2-Series launched last year is only
sold here in $78,500 225-e plugin-hybrid
form, a heady price for
a vehicle of this size and type.
However, you get a decent
amount of bang for your performance
buck. It packs plenty of
power as it delivers a highly entertaining
and engaging driving
experience, as I quickly discovered
during a recent test drive.
Those prepared to look past
the understated appearance will
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
discover an unlikely small performance
SUV superhero.
The launch of the original
model a decade ago added a new
dimension of functionality, space
and comfort to what was BMW’s
first excursion into the premium
compact urban SUV class. It
was the company’s response to
growing demand for vehicles that
meet people’s diverse lifestyles, a
market arch-rival Mercedes Benz
have successfully tapped for years
with their B-Class.
The BMW 225xe Active Tourer,
should be renamed hyper Active
Tourer, with its exhilarating acceleration,
outstanding in-gear
throttle response and levels of
smoothness bettered by few in its
class.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 9; Handling 8; Build Quality
8; Comfort 8; Passenger and Load Space 8; Styling 6; Value
for money 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8
A 1.5-litre three-cylinder motor
and plug-in hybrid system
with a combined output of
180kW and 477Nm of torque is
an absolute belter. The claimed
0-100km/h sprint time based on
my experience with the test car
is well within its capabilities. It
makes light work of the hardest
hill climbs surging over them
with effortless ease.
A crisp seven-speed dualclutch
Steptronic transmission
works a treat with this powertrain
in a gear-changing match
made in automotive heaven.
The generous yet versatile
luggage compartment, is easily
enlarged thanks to a 40:20:40
split-folding rear backrest. Flexibility
is further enhanced by a
sliding rear seat which allows
legroom in the rear or the load
compartment capacity to be
increased if needed.
Despite its compact exterior,
there is ample room for five people,
with the elevated driver and
front seat seats affording good
all-round views.
Switches and control for major
functions such as windscreen
wipers, lights, and indicators are
positioned to perfection. This
means the driver isn’t second
guessing where they are, which
is always right at the your finger
tips.
Apple CarPlay preparation enables
easy, wireless use of selected
iPhone functions inside the car.
The car’s built-in SIM card provides
seamless access to BMW
services regardless of whether a
paired smartphone is present.
One of these is Intelligent
Emergency Call that will contact
emergency services and let them
know exactly where you are in
the event of crash, and crucially
get the services and assistance
there faster to provide whatever
help is required.
A first-rate suspension strikes
a satisfying balance between
ride comfort and tenacious road
holding.
The ride is firm, but cleverly
fettled to deliver just the right
amount of suppleness. This is
there in sufficient measure to
soothe the vehicle over aggressive
road surfaces, even those with a
potpourri of deep pot holes often
described as washboard surfaces.
Their mission is to wring the
living daylights of suspensions
system, but their attempts on
this front were easily repulsed by
the test vehicles well-sorted and
engineered underpinnings.
