BUZZING: Former mayor Vicki Buck plans to turn a red zone street into a haven for 

pollinating birds, bees and insects with help from Climate Action Campus students.

A RED ZONE street will soon 

echo with bird song and the buzz 

of pollinating insects as plans 

to create New Zealand’s first 

“Pollination Street” get underway. 

Cowlishaw St in Avonside has 

been overgrown with ivy since all 

but one house on the street was 

demolished. 

Climate Action Campus, led by 

former mayor Vicki Buck, plans 

to line the 500m street, from 

Avonside Dr to Patten St, with 

plants that will attract pollinating 

species. 

The environment won’t be 

the only winner though; the 

project also aims to educate and 

empower children who visit the 

Climate Action Campus. 

Buck started the school after 

she chaired a hearing on the city 

council climate plan in 2018. 

The meeting heard a group of 

eight to 12-year-olds speak about 

how their future had been stolen 

by generations before them. 

“I completely agree with them,” 

she said. 

The campus is believed to be 

the first of its kind in Australasia 

and was started as part of central 

city special character school Ao 

Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery. It 

now works with more than 20 

schools providing environmental 

education and hands-on learning 

to young people. 

Buck wants the project to educate 

people about the importance 

of pollinators. 

“We want to explore the 

concept of pollinators and how 

important they are, and then we 

want to work with the kids to 

share that so it can be an educational 

experience,” she said. 

The project aims to attract a 

wide range of pollinating species 

and will take two to three years to 

complete. 

“Bees get all the credit, but 

there’s all sorts of pollinating 

birds and insects,” she said. 

The council has supported the 

project. 

Community partnerships 

ranger Sarah Mankelow said 

wild pollinators such as native 

bees and hoverflies often go unnoticed, 

however they play a very 

important role in our ecosystem. 

“A better understanding and 

the promotion of wild pollinators 

in Christchurch benefits our 

biodiversity, food, gardens and 

native plants – the whole ecosystem,” 

she said. 

Many businesses have contributed 

to the project by donating 

soil, plants and services. 

“What I love about Christchurch 

is that as soon as you reach 

out, there are so many amazing 

people and groups to work with,” 

said Buck. 

Landscape designer Michelle 

Cummins donated her time to 

draw up a plan for the street’s 

planting. 

She said a wide range of pollinating 

plant species, such as 

wildflowers, natives, vegetables 

and herbs, will attract different 

pollinators all year. 

“Nature works as a team and 

every plant, bug, bird and bee is a 

valuable part,” Cummins said. 

Pollination Street is just one of 

Climate Action Campus’ many 

ventures. 

Buck is working on establishing 

a solar farm and food forests to 

service communities in need. 

She also wants to open a native 

plant nursery on the tennis 

court of a former school, set up 

a facility to reuse building waste 

products in the community and 

more. 

“I find climate change both 

terrifying, but also full of opportunities.” 

Buck said young people felt 

great angst about the uncertainty 

of their futures due to climate 

change, and the best way to combat 

that is to take action. 

“It doesn’t really matter 

what the action is, but just 

taking action is the best way of 

countering climate anxiety.”

Intersection works under way 

WORK TO make a Shirley 

intersection safer is under way. 

The Shirley Rd, Hills Rd and 

Warrington St intersection is 

the first of two improvement 

packages to start in the area. 

Changes include a safe speed 

platform being installed across 

the intersection, a raised pedestrian 

crossing, a new green 

turning arrow from Hills Rd 

into Warrington St and other 

traffic calming measures. 

City council transport 

operations manager Stephen 

Wright said the intersection is 

well-used by residents on all 

forms of transport, but a lot of 

people walk through the area. 

“With the high number of 

pedestrians heading to and 

from school, early childhood 

centres, shops, and the Shirley 

Reserve and pump track, we 

want to make sure these more 

vulnerable road users are as 

safe as everyone else travelling 

through the neighbourhood.” 

The intersection will remain 

open to traffic for most of the 

construction period, which is 

expected to run throughout 

May and June. It will be closed 

to traffic for one weekend in 

June to install the platform. 

“There will naturally be

so we’re working closely 

with affected residents and 

businesses to manage the

Movement classes keeping seniors active

SENIOR CITIZENS are getting 

their groove on to help them stay 

fit and social. 

The Wainoni Avonside Community 

Services Trust runs a day 

centre in Burwood, which offers a 

range of activities to members of 

the community at a low cost. 

Zumba, crafts, and ‘Move it or 

Lose it’ are some of the activities 

hosted by the trust, plus health 

lectures and hearing checks. 

Most members are over 65. 

Community co-ordinator Betty 

Chapman believes it is essential 

for them to have access to these 

kinds of opportunities. 

“It’s really important, particularly 

for the older person, because 

it gets the oxygen to the brain 

and it activates the brain and 

(is) therefore keeping your brain 

healthier.” 

The number of people visiting 

the centre is growing, and the 

trust now has more than 150 

members on its books. 

Funding helps keep attendance 

prices between $2 and $5 to 

ensure everybody can afford to 

participate. 

“We keep it affordable but we 

wouldn’t have between 150 and 

200 attendances a week if it was 

any dearer,” Chapman said. 

She plans the weekly schedules, 

taking on feedback and letting the 

members decide what to do next. 

She said the most important 

thing is to keep them engaged so 

they continue learning and connecting 

with each other. 

“I love the connecting and 

sometimes here in the tearoom 

after a class, it’s just so full of 

conversation. 

“It’s connecting and they go 

home with the endorphin release 

and they go home happy.” 

Chapman said the sessions are 

open to all ages and encourages 

people from all walks of life to 

join in, have fun and make new 

friends.

Tempting autumn tastes and textures 

Nigel Slater offers up 

a silky leek pie and 

crunchy, soft-textured 

biscuits to lift the spirits 

Leek and parmesan pie 

Serves 6-8 

You can make this in a large 

springform cake tin or bake 

freeform on a baking sheet. I 

take the middle route, baking 

the pie freeform, but using the 

outer ring of a 23cm cake tin to 

hold the pastry in shape. The ring 

isn’t essential, but it does stop the 

pastry splitting as it bakes. The 

flavour of leeks is less strident if 

you cook them without colour, 

placing a piece of greaseproof 

paper over the surface of the sliced 

leeks as well as a lid, so they partly 

sauté, partly steam. 

Ingredients 

For the pastry: 

180g butter, fridge cold 300g plain 

flour 

1 egg yolk 

1 egg, lightly beaten 

About 50ml water for brushing 

For the leeks: 

1kg leeks 

60g butter 

3 heaped tbsp plain flour 

100g crème fraîche 

80g parmesan, grated 

Method 

• Make the pastry: cut the butter 

into small pieces and rub into 

the flour with your thumbs and 

fingertips or use a food processor. 

• When the mixture resembles 

coarse breadcrumbs, add the yolk 

and enough water to bring it to 

a rollable dough. Using lightly 

floured hands, pat the dough into 

a ball and refrigerate for half an 

hour or so. 

• Remove and discard the roots 

and very darkest green tips of 

the leeks. Slice the leeks thickly 

(1-2cm), then wash thoroughly 

in cold water to remove any grit 

that can get trapped between the 

layers. Put them in a colander and 

shake dry. 

• Melt the butter in a large pan 

with a heavy base. Put the leeks 

into the pan, cover with a disc 

of greaseproof paper or baking 

parchment, push it down to cover 

the surface, then cover with a 

lid and let them cook – a cross 

between sautéing and steaming 

– for about 25 minutes, lifting 

the paper and stirring once or 

twice, until they are soft, but not 

coloured at all. Season with black 

pepper and a little salt. 

• Sprinkle the flour over, stir, 

and cook for a further 5 minutes. 

Stir in the creme fraiche and 

grated parmesan, then set aside. 

Set the oven at 200°C and place an 

empty baking sheet in the oven. 

• Line another baking sheet 

with baking parchment. 

• Lightly oil a 23cm cake tin, 

place it on the lined baking 

sheet, then place the pastry 

over it, pushing it gently down 

into the corners and leaving the 

overhanging pastry in place. If 

you are taking the freeform route 

simply lay the pastry on the lined 

baking sheet. 

• Fill the middle of the 

pastry with the leek and cheese 

mixture. Now fold the edges 

of overhanging pastry over the 

filling, leaving the middle free of 

pastry. Brush the pastry with the 

beaten egg. 

• Place this baking sheet on top 

of the hot baking sheet already 

in the oven and cook for about 

45 minutes until the pastry is 

golden. If the leeks are colouring 

too much, then place a piece of foil 

loosely over the surface 

• Remove from the oven 

and leave to settle for about 10 

minutes. If you used a cake tin, 

run a palette knife around the 

edge to release the pie, then cut 

into thick slices and serve. 

Peanut butter cookies 

Makes roughly 38-40 little 

cookies 

Ingredients 

225g butter 

100g caster sugar 

100g soft brown sugar 

1 egg 

150g plain flour 

1 tsp baking powder 

200g peanut butter 

Roasted, salted peanuts to 

decorate 

Method 

• Line a baking sheet with baking 

parchment. Cut the butter into 

small pieces and put them in the 

bowl of a food processor with the 

sugars. Beat until soft and fluffy. 

In a small bowl, beat the egg with 

a fork, just enough to mix the 

yolks and white together, then 

add little by little to the butter and 

sugar. (I do this in 3 or 4 stages, 

so the mixture doesn’t curdle. If 

it does, stir in a spoonful of the 

flour.) 

• Sieve together the flour and 

baking powder, then add to the 

mix and continue until the flour 

has been incorporated. Stir in 

the peanut butter. Set the oven at 

170°C. 

• Place level heaped tbsps of 

the mixture on to a baking sheet, 

lined with greaseproof paper, 

leaving plenty of room around 

each to allow the biscuits to 

spread. With the back of a floured 

dessert spoon press lightly on each 

one to flatten the top. 

• Roughly chop the salted, 

roasted peanuts, then sprinkle 2g 

(about 1 tsp) on each biscuit. 

• Bake for about 12 minutes 

until the biscuits have spread and 

turned pale gold. They should 

still be soft to the touch. While 

the biscuits are baking, prepare a 

second tray and repeat until the 

mixture is all used (I do about 4 

batches). 

• Let the cookies firm up a little 

before transferring carefully to a 

cooling rack.

average just 17 of these beds are filled 

due to resourcing constraints. 

Every empty bed is a missed 

opportunity to support a child in need.

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides 

short term emergency or planned respite care 

for tamariki when they need extra support due 

to complications at home. 

Cholmondeley is an independent charity 

and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to

funding, and the remaining 80% comes from 

the generous support of the Canterbury
