WhileSaracens travelled south and completely blitzed Rakaia, Kaiapoi’s trip northtoCulverden almost brought about its undoing, and it was fourminutesinto injury time before it finallyrepelled the valiant challengefrom Hurunui. HurunuivKaiapoi This match wasathriller,and agreat display of running rugby. Kaiapoi had much the better of the first half and led 197 at the break. Manymight have expected Kaiapoi to run away in the second half, but Hurunui had different ideas. Displaying its trademark resilience it fought its way back into the game to bringthe scores level22allwith 20 minutes to play. There was no further scoreuntilHurunuiwas awarded a penalty in front,and Kyle Mckenzie raised the flags with the clock showing 83 minutes of playingtime. Therewas stilltime for akickoff. Hurunui’sexit from the kick off failed to find touch,and Kaiapoi flanker, Matt Etheredge,made astrongrun up the middle, offloading to winger Kimeon Readewho celebrated his 50th matchfor the team by scoring in the corner. Oxford vSouthbridge In amatchplayed at OxfordonThursday evening, Oxford again surrendered an earlylead with Southbridge leading 245 at halftime, and extending to 315 soon after the resumption. Despite that massive deficit, Oxford fought back,getting very good value from some of its benchplayers —TevitaPongi, Stew Dalzell and Shannon Croy. Oxford evenhad the opportunityof kicking apenaltyinthe dyingminutes, to gain an extra bonus point, but opted to attempt to score another try.For the second week in arow Oxford notched a 4trybonus point. Matt Couch at second five bristled with aggressive running, and made anumber of breaks. Its firsttry camewhen Couch linkedup withfullback ,Luke Gold, who timed his run into the backline withperfection, before linking up with the strongrunning KorbynGray to score wide out. Grayhad an impressive all roundgame, constantly lookingfor work, and was areal danger whenever he got the ballinhand. ASshley's stoutdefencewas afeature of he match.Tireless Jack Regan set the standard in this regard,making astring of tackles, but the whole team should feel veryproud of theirdefensive efforts. Ashley 17 (Korban Gray,Luke Gold tries, NathanEmery,BlakeWalesby conversions, Gray apenalty)lost to Lincoln 22. Southern vOhoka In ahigh scoringmatch at Hinds,ittook two latetriesbySouthern to finally put to bed the challengeofagallant Ohoka side. WingerGeorge Wigginswas outstanding, scoringahattrickoftries, while Tom Wedlake and Caleb Parsons, who is usually ahalfback but was playing on the wing, alsoscored. With ScottAllin addingthree conversions, all Ohoka’s pointswere scoredbybacks, but some of the forwards made an importantcontributiontothe team effort where Ben Gold was again to the forefront, working tirelessly to secure turnover ball. Jack Wedlakeand Tom Webster impressed. Southern 46 beat Ohoka 31 (George Wiggins (3),Tom Wedlake, CalebParsons tries,Scott Allin3conversions). Woodend vDarfield A1532defeat of Woodend at the handsof Darfield did not reflect the even natureof the game. Darfield went into the game as the favourites, but was made to workhard for the full80minutes. WhileDarfield led throughout, whenever it scored, Woodend foughtback. With the score at 228, and 20 minutes into the secondhalf, the rub of the green was to go againstWoodend when it was reducedto14players following ayellow cardfor adangerous tackle. Headingthe Woodend effortwas again fullback Jordie Swaine. He scored all of his team’s points with two triesand kicked the points. Bothtries signalled hisclass. For the first he sidesteppedhis way throughthe opposition, and for the second entered a blind side move on an angle to create a gap.Connor Swaine on the right wing had alively gameuntil the yellow card was issued. Woodend15(Jordie Swaine2tries, 1 conversion, 1penalty) losttoDarfield 30. GlenmarkCheviotvCeltic Thiswas atoughaway match for GlenmarkCheviot. The leadseesawed throughout the firsthalf. Glenmark Cheviot wenttothe break with a1312 lead but two tries to Celticinthe middle of the second half meant the visitors were chasing the gamefor the last quarter. Celtic scoredfour triestoone suggesting theywere clearlythe superior team. However it was not the caseasGlenmark Cheviot was verymuch on top for extended periods. It was thisterritorial dominance that enabledfullback Corrigan Harnetttokick fourpenaltygoals. All were longrangeaffairs. It was its abilitytofinish off opportunities like these thatprovedthe winning of the game in the end. Celtic 24 beat GlenmarkCheviot 19 (Thomas Blyth try, Corrigan Harnett 4 penalties and 1conversion). Rakaia vSaracens Rakaia started the seasonwell with awin overWest Melton, but despite agood start, Saracens defence held and it was not long before the Saracens’ forwards established ascendancy. All four first half tries were scored by forwards with Connor Higgins and AlexKennedy leading the waywith two each. In the second half though, it was the turn of the backs who ran amokscoring at a point aminute.Toby Ashbywas outstanding withhis hardand direct running at centre provingaconstant headache for the Rakaiadefence. He was the deserved winner of the manof thematch award.
