<strong>Top</strong> Tip 84<br />
Route cards are young people’s best guess at what they will<br />
achieve, tim<strong>in</strong>gs should be flexible and young people should not be<br />
penalised if they are mov<strong>in</strong>g ahead or beh<strong>in</strong>d of their route card<br />
tim<strong>in</strong>gs. However, remember that they should be achiev<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
m<strong>in</strong>imum of six hours of planned activity at Bronze, seven hours at<br />
Silver and eight hours at Gold (at least half of which should be<br />
journey<strong>in</strong>g). This does not <strong>in</strong>clude time <strong>for</strong> pitch<strong>in</strong>g and strik<strong>in</strong>g<br />
tents, launch<strong>in</strong>g canoes, or cook<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>g, but it does<br />
<strong>in</strong>clude lunch.<br />
Get teams to check their tim<strong>in</strong>gs thoroughly on their practice so<br />
that there are no surprises on the qualify<strong>in</strong>g expedition.<br />
<strong>Top</strong> Tip 85<br />
Gett<strong>in</strong>g lost is a normal part of the expedition process, it is from<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g how to deal with these problems that teams learn key<br />
navigational skills.<br />
Don’t be too quick to <strong>in</strong>tervene and correct teams if they look as if<br />
they are gett<strong>in</strong>g it wrong.<br />

The hardest part of any expedition is walk<strong>in</strong>g off <strong>in</strong> the correct<br />
direction from the start po<strong>in</strong>t!<br />
Ensure teams take time at the start to orientate themselves well.<br />

Teams usually fall out over small th<strong>in</strong>gs, don’t worry about this.<br />
Help them to see it is part of learn<strong>in</strong>g to work together as a team.<br />

Remote country lanes are tough on vehicles, make sure your spare<br />
wheel is fully <strong>in</strong>flated and you have the jack and wheel brace <strong>in</strong><br />
case of a puncture.<br />
