Student raising the bar at CrossFit

STRENGTH: Johan Roberts’ favourite part of CrossFit is weightlifting.

• By Maree Mahony

A GYM-BASED programme to

help “a small and scrawny” lad

to bulk up for rugby league has

been so successful the teen may

soon be competing against the

world’s best in his age-group in

the United States.

Johan Roberts, who trains at

the 64 Fitness Club in Wigram,

ditched rugby league as soon

as he caught the CrossFit bug

about four years ago.

CrossFit involves high intensity

interval training which

builds strength and conditioning

through weightlifting, gymnastics

(pullups, bars and rings)

and cardio (rowing machines,

bikes etc).

It was set up in California

in 2000 and has now spread to

around 120 countries, including

New Zealand.

The 17-year-old has just

achieved his best ever result

at competition – finishing as

the top ranked male athlete

in the world in the 16-17 agegroup.

Around 2000 other teens

were in the field when the event

started and they were reduced

to the top 10 per cent.

It was an online competition

with each athlete tasked with

completing five workouts which

were videoed and then submitted

with scores to the event

organisers.

His win was especially

PHOTO: ANNIKA ROBERTS

impressive because some of his

rivals train full-time for such

events, his proud mother Annika

Roberts said.

“The most well-rounded person

is the one who wins.”

Roberts said he never

dreamed he would finish first

and now he needs one more

top 10 finish in an event next

month to qualify for the world

championships in Madison,

Wisconsin, in August.

Three Waters

meeting

organisers

frustrated

with Pallett

• By Chris Barclay

LABOUR MP Sarah Pallett’s

non-appearance at a public

forum where residents vented

their frustrations over the

Government’s controversial Three

Waters reform has disappointed

organisers.

The Avonhead

Community Group

wanted Pallett,

the representative

for Ilam, to hear

their concerns in a

panel also intended

Sarah

to comprise her

Pallett

predecessor Gerry

Brownlee, and Waimairi Ward

city councillor Sam MacDonald.

Pallett originally accepted the

invitation but when the meeting

was rescheduled from February

21 to last Tuesday night, she told

organisers she was unable to attend.

The Government’s plans to

transfer control of drinking,

stormwater and wastewater

networks from local authorities

to four new public entities across

the country remains a contentious

issue with the city council ceding

$6.9 billion worth of water assets

under the reforms.

Housing intensification – where

three buildings up to three storeys

on a section do not require a resource

consent – and the removal

of a requirement for new houses

to have off street parking were

also discussion points for the

280-strong public gallery.

PUBLIC INTEREST: Labour MP Sarah Pallett’s absence from an Avonhead Community

Group meeting has been questioned by Waimairi Ward city councillor Sam MacDonald,

who fielded questions.

Decision draws criticism

• From page 1

Brownlee also pulled out

because he was a close contact of

a Covid-19 case, he was replaced

by National MP for Selwyn

Nicola Grigg.

Avonhead Community Group

member Clive Paris was critical

of Pallett’s absence.

“Sarah did herself no favours

by not fronting up and listening

to her constituents. She did not

have to agree but listening is a

big part of being an MP.”

MacDonald, a member of the

right-leaning Independent Citizens

faction, said it was disappointing

Pallett did not attend,

considering members of her staff

were observing.

“If it is good enough to send

along staff,” he asked, “why

couldn’t Sarah attend?”

Pallett said on April 7 she notified

organisers she would not be

attending because cabinet was

still considering recommendations

made by a working group

examining the Three Waters

reform.

She wanted to wait until she

had further details from cabinet.

“My intention was to update

local residents on the response

to feedback from the working

group and hear the community’s

view on the next step,” she said.

“I was hopeful I would have

had information on the next

phase before the meeting, however

that has not been the case.”

Local Government Minister

Nanaia Mahuta actually announced

last Friday that cabinet

had agreed to the bulk of the

working group’s 47 recommendations,

with the overhaul planned

for completion by July 2024.

Pallett added she had

previously met one-on-one

with residents and was part

of a virtual public meeting on

Three Waters held via Zoom in

November.

She also hoped to arrange for

Mahuta to visit Ilam and meet

residents.

Mother is a coach

• From page 1

The year 13 Cashmere High

School student combines schoolwork

with two trips to the gym

each day to work on his skills.

“I just find it really enjoyable,

seeing yourself get better and

seeing how good I can get at

something.

“It’s not too hard to stay motivated,

I’ve done it so long now

that it’s a habit at this point. All

my friends and family are constantly

training.”

Weightlifting is his favourite

part of CrossFit and he has

already secured national and

Oceania age-group records in the

under 17 and under 23 divisions.

His best at the clean and jerk is

160kg while in the snatch he has

achieved 125kg.

Roberts has managed to stay

injury-free to this point in part

because he doesn’t “push it” and

perhaps because he has expert

coaching advice to draw on.

Sekone-Fraser also provide guidance.

Asked what it is like to have his

mum as a coach, he said: “It was

harder when I was younger, it’s

gotten easier as I’ve got older. I

usually listen to her.”

Because CrossFit was set up as

a business, it is not recognised

officially as a sport so attracts no

government funding. Athletes

are expected to pay their own

expenses to travel and compete.

So Roberts fits in 15 hours a

week working at his local Mc-

Donald’s to help pay for some of

the costs associated with getting

to high-level competitions.

He hopes to kick on with

CrossFit into the adult

competitions, which he will be

eligible for as soon as he turns

18 and he’s also aiming to start

training as a teacher next year.

Big rigs moving at the touch of a button

• By John Cosgrove

THEY HAVE all the bells and

whistles and when viewed from a

low angle, they really do look the

part – right down to the lugs and

chains and their sound effects,

and yet they are only 1/14th the

size of the real thing.

But that doesn’t stop scores

of keen radio-controlled model

trucking enthusiasts from turning

out on the fourth Sunday of each

month to drive their pride and

joy on the RC Haulers club site

with their multi-use scale roads

in the red zone on the corner of

New Brighton Rd and Brooker

Ave.

The club has installed on-site

200m of concrete roads, also built

to scale, complete with road signs

and garages to reverse into or

store spare trailers in.

RC Haulers club secretary

and co-founder Kris Heslin, of

Halswell, who doesn’t drive trucks

professionally, said the club has a

strong following both nationally

and internationally.

“The attraction is to be creative

and share a passion for trucks, I

can tinker around at home and

then come out and have a bit of

fun,” he said.

He said a radio controlled

model truck might cost over

$1000 to outfit.

“But 80 per cent of the fun

was in making it, and customising

(Clockwise from above), RC Haulers club members check connections on

their 1/14th scale model trucks as they prepare for another day out. Club

member loads up his scratch built trailer unit. Secretary and club co-founder

Kris Heslin, of Halswell, guides his truck and trailer unit carrying a large

working scale excavator, past another road train.

it how you want it to look and

then sharing it with everyone,” he

said.

On show were many

semi-trailer trucks, light

trucks, cranes, a working dirt

processor, diggers and

excavators.

All were intricately detailed

and created from model kit sets

or scratch built to replicate the

original long haulers and the

loads they carry.

There is even a M1 Abrams

tank and a police car.

While marveling at their

detail, the many spectators on

hand couldn’t help but notice

the sheer size of these model

trucks.

They are big; with some road

train outfits well over 1.5m long.

All motor around the scale

roads, crossing over a bridge or

driving through the tunnel to

deliver their loads into garages

or one of two scale quarry sites at

the venue, all while making the

appropriate noises on cue.

They start up, they idle, and

then move away, forward under

power or reverse complete with

hazard lights and beepers.

Try your hand at driving

• From page 5

But unlike the high speeds of

radio controlled racing cars and

off-road racers, these replica

trucks and excavators also move

at the correct scale speed – about

walking pace.

Members said they must plan

their journeys because they do

strain under the loads carrying

tanks, excavators, other trucks

and cars, or even scale houses on

their trailers.

Heslin said some of the loads

can weight up to 14kg.

“They do get loaded down and

you certainly feel the weight, especially

when they go up over the

bridge and don’t quite make it.

“Trying to make it more realistic

is all part of the fun,” he said.

Enthusiast John Sanders built

a copy of his own house to be

transported by his truck and trailer

unit, just because he wanted to

make something different.

Heslin said there was no age

Growing

shrooms

‘complicated

but fun’

AN INITIATIVE to grow

mushrooms at the fungi farm

in the Avon River Corridor

regeneration area has been labelled

“complicated but fun”.

The project is being led by

the Riverlution Collective and

Richmond Community Garden.

Spokeswoman Hayley Guglietta

said it will take a couple of years

to fully establish the fungi populations

in the area.

“They’ve got to have the right

amount of sunshine, water and

heat – they need moist, warm soil,”

she said.

“It’s complicated but fun.”

Autumn is the best time to grow

fungus and since the farm opened

last July it has seen button and oyster

mushrooms pop up and shaggy

clumps of lion’s mane sprout from

trees.

“We’ve still got a lot of inoculating

to do and there’s different

methods of getting the spores

in, such as in-ground mulching,

mushroom compost and logs,”

said Guglietta.

There are workshops on site each

month where people can learn the

process of mushroom inoculation.

The fungi farm on the corner

of Evelyn Cousins Ave and River

Rd, Richmond, also features

mushroom-themed sculptures and

art.

Bug hotel a bid to boost bee numbers

A BUG hotel shaped like a whare

has been installed at Horseshoe

Lake, Burwood, to help boost the

population of native bees.

City council urban rangers

made and installed the hotel in

the lake’s regeneration area of the

Ōtakaro Avon River Corridor in

a bid to establish more colonies

of native bees.

In turn, the bees pollinate

native plants, including manuka,

kanuka and pohutukawa.

“We’re helping the native bee

population by building a home

so they can do their job more

easily. They have to compete

with the honey bees so want

to give them a bit of a head

start,” city council community

partnerships ranger Courtney

Reid said.

The hotels are filled with flax,

pinecones, bamboo and other

natural products which the bees

can use to establish their habitat.

Said Reid: “We’re supporting

from the bottom up. So if we

establish more habitats for

insects and bees, that helps

increase the number of native

plants and trees in the area,

which then attracts more native

bird life.”

The area around Horseshoe

Lake was a food resource site for

Māori, so the rangers thought

it was fitting to have the hotel

shaped like a whare.

“Staff handmade these

wonderful structures in their

spare time and also made use of

resources that were already here

in the OARC, it’s all natural.

Even the paint is made from

ochre.”

The whare is the first in a

number of hotels being installed.

There are at least another six

which will be placed in different

parts of the OARC over the

coming months, including one

in Adventure Ave and another at

the intersection of Linwood Ave

and Avonside Drive.

“It will take a while for the

bees to make their home, so it

won’t be until after winter that

we start seeing them going in

and out of the whare and other

hotels,” Reid said.

“We want to bring a public

awareness to native bees and

plants in this area, but we

also just want to encourage

people to get out and explore

the OARC.”

More housing choice

is the way forward

Population growth, housing issues – including affordability – and climate change

are prompting a re-think of some of Ōtautahi-Christchurch’s planning rules.

Our proposed plan change

We need to build a wider variety of homes,

and more of them, to suit our changing

housing needs.

For lower emissions – and future generations

– we must build upwards, particularly in and

around our commercial centres within easy

reach of work, school and the shops.

Our growth challenge

Changing the way we do things is challenging but it also brings opportunity.

Our climate is changing, the population is growing and there’s increasing pressure on our infrastructure and environment.

For the sake of future generations, we need to make good decisions now about how and where we grow so our city remains

a great place to live and do business, and that we are well positioned to respond to climate change and population growth.

Indicative illustration only: Medium Density

Residential Standards (3 units and 12 metres max.)

Indicative illustration only: High Density Residential

Zone (20 metres max.)

Indicative illustration only: High Density Residential

and Commercial Zones (20 metres max.)

Growing in the right places

While we must follow the Government’s direction, we’re proposing that

some areas have qualities, known as Qualifying Matters. This means the

rules enabling increased development would not apply, or would be

limited, and development remains subject to resource consent approval.

This could be because of their significant heritage or character value, or

because of specific hazards like rockfall, erosion, tsunami or flooding.

Planning ahead is way smarter

We have the water and wastewater pipes in place for additional housing

in most parts of the city, but there are some areas where we may not

have the capacity to service more homes.

Ōtakaro Avon River

We propose adding a district-wide engineering provision to the

District Plan which will require anyone wanting to develop land to

check water and sewer network capacity with us prior to planning

a new development. Call us on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169.

Coastal hazards – preparing for change

We’re already feeling the impacts of climate change. We need to plan

now for the effects of coastal hazards on our communities, infrastructure

and environment, so that we are ready for what we will be facing in

the future.

We’re proposing changes, via our Draft Coastal Hazards Plan Change,

to avoid an increased risk of harm to people and property from coastal

hazards such as flooding, tsunami, and erosion.

Protecting our Residential Heritage Areas

We want to protect the special heritage in some of our residential areas.

Through a separate Draft Heritage Plan Change we’re proposing to create

11 Residential Heritage Areas, which have buildings and features that

are collectively of significance to Christchurch’s heritage and identity.

This means there will be less intensification enabled than in standard

residential areas.

The plan change also proposes adding around 65 buildings, items and

building interiors to the Schedule of Significant Historic Heritage.

Protecting our Character Areas

We’re also proposing changes to the 15 Character Areas in the city,

with these to become Qualifying Matters. Character Areas are residential

neighbourhoods that are distinctive from their wider surroundings,

and are considered to be worthy of retaining.

While some infill development will be allowed, the Council will have

more flexibility in declining a resource consent where the design of

a new house, or changes to an existing house aren’t in keeping with

the Character Area.

Protecting our trees

We know trees are important to people and they play a vital role in

helping tackle climate change.

We’re working on ways to ensure that new housing development does

not come at the expense of the city’s tree canopy. This includes seeking

Financial Contributions from anyone wishing to develop land and who

does not retain or plant 20 per cent tree canopy cover on a site. We’ll

use these contributions to plant more trees on Council owned land.

We propose further protecting trees by making the list of protected

trees in the current District Plan a Qualifying Matter.

Have your say

We welcome your feedback on our Housing and Business Choice,

Coastal Hazards, Heritage, and Radio Communication Pathways

draft plan changes from 11 April until 13 May 2022. This will help us

shape the draft changes needed to bring our District Plan in line with

government direction, ahead of formal consultation before 20 August.

RD Petroleum

this winter

RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight

for farm and rural residents around the

Canterbury region, however now days urban

residents also enjoy the same excellent

customer service for which RDP is known for

in rural communities, through their home

heating diesel.

RDP began its home heating diesel delivery

service to the lower South Island’s main urban

centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin

and Invercargill a number of years ago.

Customer demand has continued to increase

year upon year, and RDP has responded

with specialised improvements to its delivery

equipment.

The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating

diesel in each urban centre are drawn from

the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This

Thursday May 5 2022

means they have the latest communication

and GPS tracking technology on board, so

the operations team always know where they

are and how far away they are from their next

delivery stop.

RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come

equipped with a specially-designed hose,

through which the diesel is pumped from

the truck into house tanks. The length of

the hose allows the trucks to access tanks

without having to enter the property, avoiding

damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to

go if you require diesel conveniently delivered

to your home and as a loyal RDP customer

HOME & HEATING

Ground moisture barrier

under low sub-floor

Now with the colder and wetter weather on

its way, home owners are focusing on ways

to make their homes comfortable, warm

and healthy for their families throughout

winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects

many of our older properties which suffer

from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.

In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many

people have relocated to homes that suffer

from rising damp which can be associated

with health problems. Independent tests have

shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise

from the ground and enter a house every day,

leading to mildew, mould, condensation and

musty smells. Moulds can produce various

allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and

very young are especially vulnerable.

Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a

locally owned and operated firm. The team

understands the problems caused by rising

damp and are there to help. They will come

to your damp home and pump a lightweight,

flowable foam concrete under your timber

floored home.

While insulation is important, it has been

recognised that it is dampness that is the real

villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes

Standards introduced by the government

effective from the 1st July 2019 now has

a requirement to install ground moisture

barriers, a key element in the armory to fight

moisture in the home.

Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a

report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under

Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed

the effects of placing Foam Concrete over

damp soil and had this to say: Condensation

on the underside of a timber floor can occur

where the floor is suspended over damp

ground and the inside air temperature falls

close to the crawl space air temperature.

Much energy is required to vaporize moisture

that penetrates the structure. By avoiding

underfloor condensation, foam concrete can

reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.

• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most

cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier

under the suspended wooden floor of your

home, even when there is no crawl space.

• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961

ground moisture barrier needs.

The importance

of air quality

The quality of the air

we breathe affects our

health and ability to

perform. We breathe in

and out approximately

20,000 litres of air every

day. It is therefore very

important to ensure

good air quality indoors

through adequate

ventilation. Ventilation

is the process of air

exchange to provide the

necessary air quality that

meets the needs of the

occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen

with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness

in the room and occupants can feel drowsy.

Invisible harmful substances like a high

content of dust and tobacco smoke are

harmful and can cause various diseases.

Even bad smells can cause discomfort or

irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s

easy to open windows for cross ventilation,

however as winter approaches, we start to

shut up out houses to trap in the heat and

as a result, air quality can decline.

Ventilation includes both the exchange

of air to the outside as well as circulation

of air within the building. It is one of the

most important factors for maintaining

acceptable indoor air quality in buildings.

Filtered air supply for summer and filtered

and warmed air in winter creates a healthy

environment in which to live and work.

In cases with poor or insufficient air

intake from outside, the oxygen content

decreases, humidity and dustiness levels

increase. If exhaust ventilation is not

provided or it is not effective, polluted air,

smells, humidity and harmful substances

are not removed.

To ensure the quality of your air, contact

the experts. Smooth-Air Products can

calculate the required air exchange for your

building requirement. Smooth-Air offers

a wide range of ventilation equipment,

from air vents to ducting for fans, for both

the commercial and domestic markets.

They have an extensive range of fans and

ventilation components in-store but they

can also provide innovative solutions

When choosing the right school for

our tamariki we often go by the ‘feeling’

we have when we visit, as much as by the

programmes that schools have on offer.

The world demands fewer people who can

do repetitive tasks and more people who

can think creatively and critically. That’s

why our vision, our aspiration, as a school

is to be ‘A centre of creative excellence’

in everything that we do, whether visual

arts or chemistry, volleyball or music,

management or curriculum organisation.

In doing this we haven’t forgotten the

importance of the strong relationships that

we build with all of our students, and the

importance of individualising learning

pathways so that we come as close as we

can to meeting every individual student’s

needs. Hornby High School’s feeling is

one of positive relationships that support

learning. Students often comment that

we feel like whānau, like family. Visitors

without exception comment on the calm

learning focussed environment that they

see and feel when they visit our learning

spaces. This all takes place within our

amazing new facilities that are allowing

us to develop a new curriculum crossing

old subject boundaries and catering for

individual needs, that support student

passions, and help our students to grow

their heart for their community. The

growing list of student achievements

support our students’ opinions that we

offer a wide range of sporting and other

activities for them during their time at

school. And we expect nothing but the

next from every student, we expect every

student to create the best version of

themselves that they can be. We emphasise

our values, promoting the ethos of

kindness, of manaaki. I personally invite

you to come along and meet with our

skilled staff, and the amazing young people

who make Hornby High School such a

wonderful place to be.

SCHOOL OPEN DAYS

Villa Maria College has served the

Catholic community in Christchurch for

over 100 years. The College was established

by the Sisters of Mercy as a Catholic school

for girls in 1918, and in 1981 Villa Maria

became an Integrated School providing

education with a Special Character. It is the

vision of Catherine McAuley, founder of

the Sisters of Mercy, that is implemented,

tested and challenged in all our education

at Villa Maria. It is this Mercy character

that makes Villa Maria special, and we

seek to live the Gospel values and infuse a

Catholic culture with our Mercy charism,

throughout all aspects of College life.

The staff at Villa Maria are committed

to creating life-long learners and nurture

each girl and her academic needs. We

are extremely proud of our academic

success. NZQA data shows that Villa Maria

Villa Maria College

students consistently perform well above

the national average for all New Zealand

schools. Striving for excellence is part of

the College culture, and girls are guided

and supported to set goals and achieve

their potential. Our smaller class sizes are

a significant advantage, and our teachers

are specialists in their field and passionate

about educating girls.

In an all girls’ environment, girls are

taken seriously. They can work through

the challenges of adolescence safely and

they thrive and excel with strong female

and male role models to inspire them. The

family atmosphere at Villa Maria College

is no accident. Students are encouraged

Better Than Before

Shirley Boys’ High School

to look after each other and give back to

the life of the College. All students are

placed in one of our six Houses, designed

to encourage camaraderie and a sense

of belonging between students across all

year levels. Each House is led by a Head

of House who oversees the pastoral care

of the students. The entire staff work in a

caring fashion to help students through

their teenage years. It is this deliberate

focus on the whole person that makes Villa

Maria a safe and secure place of learning.

Cultural opportunities play a significant

role in the life of a Villa Maria girl. We offer

a vibrant cultural programme, where girls

can seize opportunities to develop their

musical interests, or be part of our Kapa

Haka or Pasifika Group.

Villa Maria offers more than 30 different

sports, so there truly is something for

everyone. Students are encouraged to

participate in sport, whether they strive

to become elite athletes, or just want to

have fun. Through sport, girls make new

friends, learn new skills, and live a healthy

lifestyle. This is central to our inclusive

philosophy at Villa Maria College.

With a full and vibrant College

experience, balancing academic study and

the many co-curricular activities on offer, it

is a pleasure to watch our students develop

from Villa girls into confident and caring

young Mercy women.

We invite you to take a Villa virtual

tour and see our classrooms in action via

our website at www.villa.school.nz

Shirley Boys’ High School – Ngā

Tama o Ōruapaeroa is a school of 1200

boys that serves the eastern suburbs of

Christchurch. It has a rich history, which

continues to develop at our new site at

Ōruapaeroa. We have a purpose-built

school with first-rate facilities designed

to support the learning of boys. Although

our current site is new, we still focus on

the traditions, customs and values of a

school that has proudly been part of the

community since 1957.

Our staff are expert in the learning

needs and strengths of our akonga.

Teachers deliver high quality teaching

and learning based on the New Zealand

curriculum. The learning is challenging,

engaging and fit for boys. It is directed

by the teacher in a calm and ordered

environment. Our focus and our kaupapa

is on developing positive and strong

relationships, with a goal of producing

high levels of academic and personal

achievement in academic, sporting,

cultural and service endeavours.

At Shirley Boys’ High School, boys

are encouraged to participate in a vast

array of sporting and cultural activities

that are designed to prepare them for

success at and beyond school. The

desired outcome for our boys is that they

enjoy school and find it a positive and

rewarding experience. We support this

with our core values of Respect, Whānau,

Belonging, Character and Better Than

Before. These values contribute in

making our school strong across all

areas. Through living and demonstrating

these values, our boys will continue

to learn and grow, and will be positive

role models, contributing citizens and

respectful Shirley Men.

Shirley Boys’ High School is committed

to preparing young men to succeed in

their world. We provide learning that

is designed to enrich boys and prepare

them for success. It is our belief that all

boys have the capacity and the support

to achieve personal success, and we

encourage them to be Better Than Before.

RAY WHITE PAPANUI NEWS

Preparing your home for the big chill!

With the weather still comfortable and

families enjoying the great outdoors in

most states, now is the time to prepare

your home for the approaching winter.

A little planning and preventative

maintenance go a long way towards

cleaning and sprucing up your home and

garden in readiness for the colder months

ahead.

The benefits of forward planning

Regular home maintenance ensures that

breakdowns or expensive repairs are not

on the agenda — allowing you to coast

into an easy winter.

In addition, you will save on energy costs

and eliminate the need for emergency

repairs with a sound winter-preparedness

plan in place.

Taking advantage of clement conditions

We know that soon enough the days will

shorten as the night-time temperatures

slowly plummet. You should use this

trans-seasonal time wisely to fuel the

imagination for a cosy-style scene-setting

at home.

Changes and Healthy Homes

Standards Announced

As you are likely aware I have been

waiting with baited breath for the changes

to the Healthy Homes Standards to be

confirmed and I am excited to advise

that it has just been confirmed that The

Residential Tenancies (Healthy Homes

Standards) Amendment Regulations

2022 have been gazetted.

This means the legislation to change

the Healthy Homes standards has been

finalised, and a date is now confirmed

for when the changes come into force

(12 May 2022).

The amendments make changes to the

heating, ventilation, moisture ingress, and

drainage healthy homes standards.

So – what will this actually mean?

Here is a summary of what the changes

will look like :

• The Heating Formula changes

reducing the required level of

heating for any dwelling built to the

2008 building code, and most

apartments. It is important to

remember however that the current

heating assessment tool remains in

place for most of the rented housing

stock in New Zealand. The same

requirement for the heating to still

heat the largest living area to

18 degrees C or more will still apply,

just under a different calculation,

however in most cases it will mean that

instead of the old calculation requiring

in many cases a larger heat source to

be installed, they will now likely comply

with a smaller one.

With the cold conditions fast approaching,

if not already upon us, take action to

prepare your home and garden for the

cooler months to come.

Getting your home ready for the

forthcoming season allows you to fully

immerse yourself in the interior warmth

of winter.

How to ensure your Canterbury home

is ready for cold weather

Here’s a checklist of must-do tasks for you

to perform when preparing your house and

garden for late autumn and winter:

• Clean and cover your outdoor

furniture

• Plant your bulbs for springtime

flowers

• Clean the gutters and install gutter

guards to prevent backups

• Cleaning on and around your heat

pump can cause up to a 30 percent

energy increase

• Prepare your chimney for cosy nighttime

fires with an annual sweep and

Stock up on plenty of firewood

• Replace the batteries in your smoke

detectors

• Keep the cold weather at bay by

replacing dry or damaged weather

stripping on all doors and windows

• Check your home for drafts and

potential cold spots

• Check your electrical blankets and

replace any that are due

• Changes to ‘top up’ heating

requirements and the tolerance of

existing heaters are also coming in

which will make it easier to comply.

Existing heaters will now comply if

they come within 80% of the required

KW (this was 90%), and if the heater

was installed prior to 1st July 2019 a

‘top up’ heater of up to 2.4KW can now

be installed, (up from the previous

1.5KW maximum).

There are a couple of other small changes

around heating experts being able to

provide a statement that the heating does

in fact heat to the required minimum

temperature in certain situations, and

allowance for continuous mechanical

ventilation systems to satisfy the

standards set for ventilation. Plus there

will be no further requirement to install

alternative moisture barriers where it is

not reasonably practicable to install a

polythene barrier.

I am sure you will join me in celebrating

that common sense has finally prevailed

and landlords of warm and modern homes

will no longer need to unjustly have to

change heating that is in fact doing a good

job in keeping tenants warm!

Operations Manager

Property Management

• Clean out the garage so you can

store your car away from the frosts

and save time in the morning

• If you live in a area that gets hard

frosts, ensure that all exterior-wall

water pipes are insulated to prevent

freezing and burst pipes

• Check all flashlight batteries and

stock up on supplies for potential

power outages.

• Check and trim your landscaping for

dead or damaged tree limbs.

Last, but not least, sit back and admire

your handiwork/maintenance efforts, as

they will surely stand you in good stead

for the chilly months ahead.
