“On one hand, I like to<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k about my art as<br />

an expression of lyrical<br />

beauty that can be found<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, but on <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r hand, it is always a<br />

statement as well,” says<br />

Marco.<br />

“I often portray<br />

<strong>the</strong> bodies of my<br />

models <strong>in</strong> a moment<br />

of metamorphosis<br />

and <strong>the</strong> characters<br />

become allegories,”<br />

says Marco<br />

- Exclusive to <strong>Magzoid</strong><br />

Marco Grassi is a<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Italybased<br />

artist born <strong>in</strong><br />

1987. Thanks to his<br />

grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, an art<br />

collector by passion, Marco has<br />

been surrounded by ancient master<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs and antique artworks,<br />

rang<strong>in</strong>g from pottery to sculptures<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce childhood. His surround<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

undoubtedly <strong>in</strong>fluenced him, and<br />

he had a keen <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> beautiful<br />

arts from a very young age.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g his university studies <strong>in</strong><br />

Bologna, where he pursued an<br />

education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> preservation of<br />

antique artworks, he decided to<br />

focus on his passion and convert<br />

it <strong>in</strong>to a vocation. As a result, he<br />

began to alter and re<strong>in</strong>terpret <strong>the</strong><br />

old pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g techniques <strong>in</strong> new<br />

ways. This quickly became his<br />

signature style. Marco like most<br />

excellent pa<strong>in</strong>ters never aspired<br />

to show <strong>the</strong> world exactly as it is.<br />

He enjoys <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g strange<br />

aspects <strong>in</strong>to his pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to portray expressions that are near<br />

to his heart.<br />

He pa<strong>in</strong>ts with oil colors,<br />

a material that allows him to<br />

accomplish effects that would be<br />

impossible to do o<strong>the</strong>rwise. Marco<br />

has always aspired to mix detailed<br />

realism and a contemporary f<strong>in</strong>ish<br />

with "sfumato," an Italian pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technique that excelled dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Renaissance. Soft transitions<br />

between each area of <strong>the</strong> picture,<br />

as well as very delicate and<br />

natural color passages, are deeply<br />

<strong>in</strong>gra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> his work.<br />

“On one hand, I like to th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

about my art as an expression of<br />

lyrical beauty that can be found <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world, but on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand,<br />

it is always a statement as well,”<br />

says Marco. His artistic research<br />

is frequently focused on those<br />

ongo<strong>in</strong>g transfigurations, human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>gs turn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong>animate<br />

materials. He frequently strives to<br />

make th<strong>in</strong>gs mysterious and veiled,<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g that is difficult to grasp<br />

at first glance.<br />

Marco ma<strong>in</strong>ly concentrates on<br />

two primary topics. The first is <strong>the</strong><br />

lost balance between humans and<br />

nature, which casts an everlast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

shadow of environmental damage,<br />

climate change, and species<br />

ext<strong>in</strong>ction. The second <strong>the</strong>me he<br />

frequently discusses is solitude,<br />

as well as <strong>the</strong> perseverance of a<br />

person who is alone <strong>in</strong> a terrible<br />

world.<br />
