World Environment Day is a global

pollution, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity

facing our world today. World Environment Day 

provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, 

and governments to come together 

and act towards addressing these issues. The 

theme of World Environment Day changes every 

year, with a focus on different environmental 

concerns. One of the key aspects of World 

Environment Day is its emphasis on individual 

action. While governments and organizations 

have a crucial role to play in addressing environmental 

challenges, it is ultimately up to 

each one of us to make a difference. On World 

Environment Day, individuals are encouraged 

to make small changes in their daily lives that 

can have a significant impact on the environment. 

This could be anything from using 

public transport or cycling instead of driving, 

reducing single-use plastic consumption, or 

trying to recycle. In addition to individual action, 

World Environment Day is also an opportunity 

for governments and organizations to commit 

to ambitious environmental goals. World Environment 

Day is coordinated worldwide by 

the United Nations Environment Programme

practise, it is an all-encompassing method of 

improving a person’s wellness. In addition to 

helping people deal with stress, this practise 

has been shown to have positive effects on an 

array of psychological and physical variables. 

On International Yoga Day, people around the 

world gather to participate in yoga classes, 

workshops, and other events to promote the 

practice of yoga. It is an opportunity for people 

to come together and celebrate the many 

benefits of yoga and share their experiences 

with others. Many yoga studios and gyms offer

Diletta Innocenti Fagni is a talented 

contemporary artist, born in Florence 

in 1988. She began studying art during 

high school and later pursued 

her passion by completing her studies in Art, 

theater, and film at the University of Rome. 

In her work, Diletta draws inspiration from 

mnemonic images and visual resources, exploring 

the themes of intimacy, emotions, and 

identity in both the present and the past. Her 

artwork primarily consists of scenes from private 

moments, imbued with the evocative power 

of images. She has a keen eye for detail, and 

her intimate paintings employ soft, warm, and 

sensual brushstrokes that celebrate femininity 

while showcasing the union between nature 

and the human being in a romantic, delicate, 

and contemporary vision. 

In addition to her artistic pursuits, Diletta is 

also an accomplished writer, with numerous 

publications to her name. Her work has been 

featured in several group exhibitions, where 

she has had the opportunity to collaborate with 

other artists and showcase her unique vision. 

Currently based between Rome and Tuscany, 

Diletta has held two solo exhibitions, including 

the 2022 Viewing Room in Italy and the 2020 

In My Feelings exhibition in the United Arab 

Emirates. Her work has been widely acclaimed 

and appreciated by art enthusiasts and collectors 

worldwide.

Using Hyperrealism to express appreciation 

for life 

“My art is born out of errors and in my mistakes, presents an opportunity for perfection,” says 

Ikenchukwu Solomon 


Ikenchukwu Solomon, popularly known 

as Solomon Iken, was born and working 

in Nigeria as a hyperrealist artist and art 

tutor; graduated from Babcock University 

with a B.Sc in International Law and Diplomacy. 

“Early in my life, I always had a liking for 

everything related to pencil on paper and 

now despite my degree I find myself being 

a full-time pencil artist specialised in portrait 

realism through the medium of graphite and 

charcoal,” says Ikenchukwu Solomon. Solomon’s 

love for creating realistic portraits was 

ignited at a very young age all thanks to his 

late Elder brother who taught him a great 

deal of what he knows and has improved on 

today. He told him that “we were all beautifully 

carved into being and that means we can 

as well create beauty.” Solomon was greatly 

inspired by his drawings growing up and 

now has learned that art can set the eyes of 

the world on normal human beings. 

In the category of Hyperrealism, he sees 

his drawings as the most real means through 

which he can express his appreciation for 

life while seeking to achieve a logical expression 

of the human essence. Solomon 

loves to draw faces and capture emotion 

with great attention to detail and all that 

makes a countenance! “Working with charcoal 

has been a great deal to achieving

Universal beauty in an unseen and novel 

perspective 


Born in 1978 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, 

Jan Kaláb is one of the country’s 

most notable contemporary 

artists’ today. A founding pioneer of 

the Prague underground graffiti, and street 

art scene, formerly known as Cakes, and 

with his crew, The DSK - together they animated 

city streets, and spent many sleepless 

nights in train yards. 

Following those glory days, Jan’s work 

has evolved to 3-D graffiti, light suspended 

installations, animated NFTs, paintings, and 

sculptures. His paintings teeter on the edge 

of sculpture and his sculptures are mostly 

painted. All the while, shape and color are 

the main characters of his work, which he 

pushes and blends together to exaggerate, 

or minimize, forms. Sometimes Jan’s work 

may resemble a particular shape, but it is 

never his intention to capture, nor replicate 

an existing image or narrative. Rather, he 

seeks universal beauty in an unseen and 

novel perspective, and redirects the known 

into the unknown; into a new dimension. The 

sensations of déjà vu, like when remembering 

a special moment or melody; this is the 

ultimate feeling, Jan strives to achieve and 

wishes to resonate with his audience. 

A Masters graduate from the Academy of 

Fine Arts of Prague in 2006, Jan had his first 

solo exhibition shortly thereafter in 2008 at 

the acclaimed Trafo Gallery, an exclusive art 

space notorious for showing only outstanding 

artists with limited shows of six per year. 

Since then, Jan has exhibited in high profile 

galleries around the world, including New 

York, Miami, London, Paris, Shanghai, and 

Rio de Janeiro.

“My work is purely emotional. There are no hidden messages. 

For me, it’s all about creating an atmosphere. Just like a song 

can transport the listener to a different space and time,” says

In his abstract photographic art, self-taught 

visual artist Joris Graaf (The Hague, 1980) 

seeks to create tension by forming a synthesis 

of opposites: melody and noise, rhythm 

and chaos, darkness and light. His work is 

inspired by music and contemporary abstract 

painting. He is fascinated by the emotive power 

of colour and shape. 

“When seeing my work for the first time, most 

people believe they’re looking at paintings, 

but they’re actually looking at photographic 

artworks. To make these images, I start with 

multiple-exposed photographs of scenes that I 

either find or build myself with various materials. 

Then I intuitively process these images in the 

digital realm to remove, accentuate or alter 

elements of the composition. Both phases are 

equally important in the creation of the final 

image,” says Joris 

Joris has a background in earth sciences 

and worked as a geologist for over a decade 

before shifting his focus to the arts. Recurring 

stylistic elements in his work are the use of an 

altered, minimal but intense colour palette and 

an interplay of order and confusion, of spontaneity 

and restraint. Joris’ work is on display 

in galleries in the Netherlands and Belgium. 

He works and resides in Wateringen, the 

Netherlands. 

“My work is purely emotional. There are

Nebolisa Kelly Chieloka was born in 

1998, he is a self-taught Nigerian 

artist, born and raised in Lagos, 

Nigeria. He specializes in a genre 

of art known as hyperrealism. A graduate of 

Chemical Engineering from the University of 

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra 

State. From as early as he could remember, 

Nebolisa kelly began drawing at a very 

young age, he started off by drawing his 

favorite cartoon characters and eventually 

matured into a full-time artist exploring the 

use of charcoal, graphite pencil, pastel, 

prints and acrylic on paper/canvas. He is 

best known for his realistic life-size portraits 

mostly of young people, relating to matters 

of mental health, love, social and political 

activism. He is known for the emotion his 

art evokes in the viewer and often time he 

applies Engineering formulas in his artworks 

which further explains the unique concept 

behind his art. He believes that there is a 

strong relationship between science and 

art, he often says ‘Even Science is a work 

of Art’. The hyper-realistic artist sets out to 

arouse relatable feelings and always passes 

a societal judgment on what should be. He’s 

always keen to deliver a message through 

his art. He works mostly with reference images 

and through his imagination. Nebolisa 

Kelly is currently based in Awka, Anambra 

State, Nigeria and has participated in a 

group exhibition titled Talented Individual 

Art Festival, Portharcout Nigeria (2020). 

“I’m inspired by young people, the fun, the

to arouse relatable feelings in my viewers

Stone Age hunting traps discovered in Saudi 

Arabia and Jordan 

Archaeologists have made an extraordinary 

find in Saudi Arabia and Jordan, 

uncovering the oldest-known 

architectural plans that date back 

over 9,000 years. The plans, etched on stone 

slabs, depict detailed designs of Stone Age 

hunting traps called “kites.” These traps were 

used to capture wild animals and consisted 

of converging walls that drove the animals 

toward a central corral surrounded by deep 

pits. Over 6,000 such structures have been 

found across the Middle East and Asia, with 

the highest concentration in present-day Saudi 

Arabia, southern Syria, and eastern Jordan. 

In 2015, archaeologists discovered two 

engraved slabs in Saudi Arabia and Jordan 

that shed light on these ancient structures. The 

engravings found in Jordan were on a stone 

estimated to be around 7,000 years old and 

revealed eight previously identified hunting 

kites near Jibal al-Khashabiyeh. In Saudi Arabia’s 

Jebel az-Zilliyat region, a larger engraved 

stone nearly 13 feet in length depicted two 

distinct kites located close to each other and 

was estimated to be around 8,000 years old. 

The study conducted on these discoveries 

revealed that the engraved plans accurately 

represented the shape, layout, and proportions 

of the actual kites found in the field. While 

the size of the Jordanian kite was 425 times 

larger than its plan, the Saudi Arabian kite was 

depicted at a scale of 1:175, making it 175 

times larger than the engraving. The drawings 

on the slabs displayed remarkable accuracy 

and realism, maintaining proper proportions 

and cardinal directions. 

Although the representation of the deep pits 

on the engravings did not adhere to scale 

and appeared as simple circles, the construction 

of these kites showcases the impressive 

spatial awareness and collaborative efforts 

of the ancient communities involved. These 

kites were among the largest structures built 

by humans at that time and likely required 

extensive collaboration to successfully hunt 

a large number of animals. 

These recent discoveries provide valuable 

insights into the ingenuity and advanced skills 

of our ancient ancestors. By studying these ancient 

architectural plans, researchers can better 

understand the behaviors, technologies, and 

cooperative practices of Stone Age societies.

evolving understanding of human history and 

the intricate complexities of early civilizations.

One of the most significant effects of 

technology on emerging art is the ability to 

create art that is interactive and immersive. 

Virtual reality (VR) has been particularly 

influential in this regard, allowing artists to 

create fully immersive environments that 

viewers can interact with. VR technology 

has been used to create art installations, 

performances, and even entire exhibitions. 

For instance, artist Laurie Anderson created 

a VR installation called “Chalkroom,”

celebration. Whether it is classical, pop, 

rock, jazz, hip-hop, or folk, music can unite 

us, transcend language barriers, and inspire 

us to come together as a global community. 

World Music Day is not just a celebration 

of music but also a recognition of the artists 

who create it. It is a day to honour their 

talent, dedication, and creativity, and to 

appreciate the artistry that goes into making 

music. It is an opportunity to support and 

encourage emerging artists and to ensure 

that the music industry remains a vibrant and 

diverse space for creative expression. The 

day is celebrated around the world through 

concerts, music festivals, and performances. 

Musicians of all levels, from amateur to 

professional, come together to share their 

music with audiences and to celebrate the 

joy and power of music. Music schools and 

community organizations often hold special 

events and workshops to introduce people 

to new musical styles and instruments. But 

World Music Day is not just about celebrating 

music for one day of the year, it is 

much more than a celebration. It is also a 

call to action to support and promote music 

as a vital part of our daily lives. Whether it 

is through attending concerts, listening to

“My environment inspires me every time. Seeing the daily activities of people in the 

society, the hustling and bustling, the good and the bad, the daily struggles of an average 

Nigerian, and people in general. The works of some great artists also inspire me, painters 

and sculptors within and outside the country. But most importantly, my environment is

Silas Onoja is a Nigerian contemporary 

artist born in Makurdi, Benue State, 

Nigeria. He grew up as a kid who 

loves drawing with so much passion 

for the arts, and so, he went on to study Fine 

Art at the Benue State Polytechnic, Benue, 

Nigeria. His forte is creating realistic and lifelike 

paintings, which attract emotions and attention, 

and some of his paintings have been exhibited 

around the world. 

Silas Onoja depicts Nigerians in different 

forms. A man smiling on the street, a child 

having a bath or a swim. His work transports 

you to that moment immediately, the same 

way a good book does. When you look at 

Silas Onoja’s art, you are reminded of simple 

moments that made you happy. 

His medium of painting is oil on canvas and 

he is more interested in hyperrealism. Which 

is why his paintings are hyper-realistic. 

Each of Silas’ pieces not only tell a story, but 

also evoke emotion. It makes you think and ask

Hysterically laughing figures 

influenced by Pop Art and Surrealism 

“I’m actually trying to make sense of the world, there’s nothing cynical or absurd in what 

I do,” says Yue 


Yue Minjun, a contemporary Chinese 

artist renowned for his innovative 

approach to self-portraiture, is often 

associated with the Cynical Realism 

movement in China, alongside fellow artists 

Fang Lijun and Liu Wei. However, he rejects 

such labeling of his work. His vividly hued 

portrayals of hysterically laughing figures are 

influenced by both Pop Art and Surrealism, and 

they function as a subtle form of social and 

political critique that addresses both Chinese 

history and the Western art canon. Minjun 

himself stated that his art is an attempt to 

comprehend the world, and that there is nothing 

cynical or absurd about his creations. Minjun 

was born in 1962 in Daqing City, China, and 

trained as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker 

at Hebei Normal University in the 1980s. After 

witnessing the repressive regime that culminated 

in the Tiananmen Square massacre 

of protesters, he began employing his art to 

grasp the societal transformations unfolding in 

China in the subsequent decades. In 2008, he 

collaborated with KAWS to produce a series 

of figurines that blend their two distinct styles. 

Currently residing and working in Beijing, 

China, Minjun’s pieces are held in collections 

of prestigious institutions such as the Denver 

Art Museum, the Shenzhen Art Museum, and 

the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Explorations of time and notions 

of rigor and fragility 


Afra Al Dhaheri is an Emirati artist 

whose work is informed by her upbringing 

in Abu Dhabi and the UAE. 

Her artistic practice spans various 

mediums, including mixed media, sculpture, 

drawing, painting, installation, photography, 

and printmaking, and is characterized by explorations 

of time and adaptation, as well as 

notions of rigor and fragility. 

Born in 1988 in Abu Dhabi, Al Dhaheri earned 

her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design 

in the United States in 2017. She completed 

residencies with The Salama bint Hamdan 

Emerging Artists Fellowship, in partnership 

with the Rhode Island School of Design in 

2014, and at Porthmeor Studios in St. Ives, 

Cornwall, UK, in 2019. She currently works as 

an Assistant Professor in Visual Arts at Zayed 

University in Abu Dhabi. 

Al Dhaheri’s unique vocabulary of references 

shapes her approach to each experiment, 

with repetition serving as both a method for 

extending time and a means of fully experiencing 

or realizing each stage of a work. 

Her solo exhibitions include Split Ends at the 

Green Art Gallery in Dubai, UAE (2021) and 

Inevitable Ephemera at the T + H Gallery in 

Boston, USA (2016). Her work has also been 

featured in several group exhibitions, including 

Beyond: Emerging Artists at Cromwell Place 

in London, UK (2021), Conscious Becoming 

at Tatjana Pieters in Ghent, Belgium (2021), 

and Beyond: Emerging Artist at Manarat Al 

Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi, UAE (2020). Other 

exhibitions include From Within in Riyadh, 

KSA (2019), Avoid Bad Dreams at the Green

Born in Lebanon, Joy Nabil Najm grew 

up in an artistic family where she was 

exposed to a rich world of culture, art, 

and music at a very young age. The 

early seeds of talent, flourished and evolved 

with practice and passion. She studied her 

bachelor’s degree in advertising and Marketing 

from Notre Dame University, worked in Qatar 

and is currently living in Dubai. With time, Joy 

Najm crafted her own multidisciplinary artistic 

identity that was reflected in her work where 

she expressed her strong and vibrant emotions. 

From the age of 6 to 14 years old, Joy learned 

to use different painting techniques and to 

play various musical piano style. She had a 

promising journey that had to be put on hold 

because of several medical circumstances.

Tannaz Khaleghian is a Persian artist 

based in the UAE since 2001. She 

began her professional art career 

at the age of 8, being mentored by 

internationally renowned artists such as Abbas 

Katouzian and Alireza Sadaghdar from 

Iran. She has mastered the ability to combine 

multiple painting styles like Realism, 

Contemporary Expressionism, and Abstract 

to convey her feelings through her artworks, 

which acknowledge the hardships that many 

of us can relate to and create an instant 

emotional connection with viewers. 

She has received numerous awards 

and certificates from solo and group exhibitions 

in Iran, Turkey, Italy, Switzerland, 

and the UAE. She is a member of the Iran 

Painters Institute. She has participated in 

various galleries and art shows as an artist 

and jury member, including Index, Big5, 

Global Village, MOTB, Dubai Art Week, Art 

Fusion Night, Dubai Design District, the 

50th National Day Art Show by Artoze, and 

internationally in events such as the Istanbul 

Art Fair, Helvet Switzerland, Fajr Art Festival 

Iran, Art Fes Venice, and more.

Micky Goldstein, an artist based in 

Israel, has been painting since 

childhood. His passion for art 

led him to pursue a degree in 

design at WIZO Haifa College, specializing 

in illustration and animation. Throughout 

his career, Goldstein has received national 

and international awards for his exceptional 

work. 

In addition to his commercial design endeavors, 

Goldstein has illustrated children’s

textbooks, and political 

cartoons for prominent

Alymamah Rashed is a talented 

Kuwaiti visual artist whose work 

explores themes of identity and the 

natural environment, often through 

the lens of her own body and experiences. 

Through her art, she skillfully navigates her 

female subjectivity in relation to local folklore, 

the mundane objects of everyday life, and her 

encounters with botanical specimens found 

in her home country. 

Alymamah obtained her MFA in Fine Arts 

from Parsons School of Design in 2019 and her 

BFA in Fine Arts from The School of Visual Arts 

in 2016. During her time in New York City, she 

participated in several exhibitions, including 

at the Czech Center, Parsol Projects, and The 

New School. She has also been recognized 

for her exceptional talent and dedication to 

her craft, receiving the Masters Scholarship 

and the Merit Scholarship program from the 

Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education. She was 

also a fellow at the Professional Development 

Initiative Program sponsored by the National 

U.S-Arab Chamber of Commerce, Kuwait 

Ministry of Higher Education, Embassy of 

Kuwait, and the Kuwait Foundation for the 

Advancement of Sciences. 

Alymamah’s work has been featured in a

Exploring Emirati identity through 

photography and Mixed Media: The art 

of Ammar Al Attar 

“I began by photographing the places in the UAE that were part of my daily life, driving 

in my car for hours after my government job ended each afternoon, rolling the driver’s 

side window down and shooting with my Leica,” says Ammar 


Ammar Al Attar is a photographer and 

mixed media artist. Born in 1981, he 

lives in Ajman in the United Arab 

Emirates. Completely self-taught, Al 

Attar’s practice seeks to not only document 

and translate but also methodically research 

and examine aspects of Emirati ritual, material 

culture, and geographic orientation that are 

increasingly illusive in his rapidly globalizing 

society. 

Al Attar often incorporates retro photographic 

equipment into his shoots. He hoards everything 

from slide projectors to large format cameras, 

dog-eared postcards and orphaned negatives 

and meticulously catalogs these clues to the 

past on the shelves of his Sharjah studio. His 

ongoing research project, Reverse Moments 

a collaboration with various long time studio 

photographers, collects stories and artifacts 

that compose the history of photography in the 

UAE, and curates these flashes into a critical 

emerging narrative. 

Al Attar’s first solo show Prayer Rooms, 

brought viewers into Muslim sacred spaces 

from impermanent ‘porta-mosques’ on roadsides, 

and simple neighborhood mosques, 

to sleek shopping mall and office complex 

prayer rooms in the UAE, Bahrain, and Saudi 

Arabia. Sibeel Water, which was shown at Dubai’s 

Cuadro Gallery in 2013, investigated both 

the industrial and decorative range of public 

water fountains positioned outside homes and 

government buildings in the UAE as a form 

of charitable giving to workers and passerby 

compelling viewers to consider the theme of 

resource conservation in the desert alongside 

Islamic geometric patterns and a hospitality 

that is slowly dying out. 

With Index 1.0, a series commissioned by 

Maraya Art Centre, Al Attar shot large format 

portraits of 50 artists, patrons, curators, and 

writers who paved the way for the established 

contemporary art hub that the UAE has come 

to be recognized as over the course of the past 

decade. The show marked a shift for Al Attar 

from portraits of places to portraits of people 

a pattern that continued with Salah, his 2015 

solo show at Cuadro Gallery, which immersed 

viewers in the movements, meta-movements 

and meaning of prayer in Islam through stark 

self portraits and the artist’s first performance 

piece, in which he filmed himself praying in 

the midst of busy intersections and noted how 

passerby responded. 

“Although I will always value research and 

documentation, particularly as it is grounded 

in my country’s culture, my work is now moving 

beyond borders and neat labels,” says the artist. 

Al Attar’s work has been increasingly shown 

within the UAE and Gulf, and is held in prestigious 

public and private collections including 

Sharjah Art Foundation, Barjeel Art Foundation, 

and Maraya Art Centre, the forthcoming Zayed 

National Museum, and others. He is represented 

by Cuadro Gallery in Dubai.

Exploring the boundaries of art and 

performance: The unique approach of 

Maitha Abdalla 


Maitha Abdalla is a highly talented 

multi-disciplinary artist hailing from 

the UAE. Born in 1989, Maitha’s 

art practice combines a range of 

mediums including film, photography, sculpture, 

painting, drawing, and performance. Maitha’s 

work is known for its unique approach to tackling 

themes that explore folklore, mythology, gender, 

social conditioning, and psychology. She 

often employs the performative and constructed 

character of the theatre as a means of confronting 

and destabilizing the social constructs 

that she has encountered throughout her life. 

Abdalla’s art often takes on a fantastical 

quality, shifting between abstraction and representation 

and charged with both drama and 

melancholy. Her work is a continuous investi- 

gation into the self, with the artist constructing 

characters that embody different facets of her 

persona. Her characters are often portrayed 

as being constrained within tight domestic 

spaces, which expose their vulnerability and 

amplify the emotions that they convey. 

One of the most notable aspects of Abdalla’s 

practice is her approach to painting, which she 

considers a continuation of the performance. 

She employs a bodily approach to painting, 

often applying dense layers of oil and acrylic 

paint with her fingertips and tracing around 

her own figure with gestural smears of charcoal. 

This tactile approach allows the artist to 

create a deeper connection between her body, 

the artwork, and the viewer, blurring the lines 

between performance and visual art. 

Maitha Abdalla’s work has been exhibited 

in various prestigious institutions in the UAE, 

including the Sharjah Art Foundation, where 

she participated in the 2019 edition of the 

Sharjah Biennial. Her work has also been 

exhibited internationally, including in France 

and Italy. Abdalla’s unique and highly personal 

approach to art has earned her a growing 

reputation as one of the most exciting young 

artists to emerge from the UAE in recent years. 

With her willingness to explore the boundaries 

between different artistic mediums and her 

commitment to creating emotionally charged, 

thought-provoking work, she is undoubtedly

Challenging borders through interdisciplinary art 


Majd Alloush is a Syrian interdisciplinary 

artist born in Dubai, UAE 

in 1996. He earned his Bachelor 

of Fine Arts degree from the University 

of Sharjah in 2018 and is currently 

pursuing his Master of Fine Arts in Art and 

Media at NYU Abu Dhabi. Alloush’s work 

spans multiple disciplines including printmaking, 

sculpture, photography, moving 

image, installation, and performance, and 

his creative practice challenges the notion 

of borders in concept, content, and medium. 

He explores issues such as psychology, 

geopolitics, social and environmental 

issues, and the ramifications of war and 

displacement. Alloush strategically creates 

work with multiple possible interpretations, 

requiring the viewer’s own worldview to 

inform the meaning. His work is situated 

within contemporary hybrid practice, at the 

intersection of traditional processes and 

innovative methodology. 

Rather than being steered by a developed 

skill set, Alloush begins with ideas and concepts, 

which then guide his process towards 

discovering the most appropriate means 

and mediums of creation. He is interested in 

processes with an unattachment to results, 

often not knowing how the work will turn 

out until late in the process. Alloush is influenced 

by Richard Hamilton’s approach, who 

always questioned which medium would be 

best suited to express the idea or address a 

problem, saying “A medium need not sit in 

isolated purity. It has always been my contention 

that the first objective is to achieve a 

compelling image and that aim demands a 

felicity in its implementation.” 

Alloush’s works have been exhibited in- 

ternationally, including in recent exhibitions 

such as Intimaa at NYU Abu Dhabi (2020), 

Vantage Point Sharjah in Sharjah, UAE 

(2019), 31st Festival Les Instants Video in 

Marseilles, France (2019), and RENT’S DUE 

at North Street Collective & Unit 5 Gallery in 

London, UK (2018).

Louvre Abu Dhabi announces five upcoming 

major exhibitions 

Louvre Abu Dhabi has announced that 

it will host five major exhibitions in its 

upcoming 2023-2024 cultural season, 

starting this summer. The exhibitions 

will showcase stories of artistic and cultural 

connections around the world and provide a 

platform for local and regional artists to showcase 

their talents. The museum will also offer a 

range of cultural programming and events to 

engage and connect with the community, such 

as performances, masterclasses, health and 

wellness offerings, curatorial talks, and more. 

The first exhibition, Picturing the Cosmos, 

will be held in the Children’s Museum from 18 

July 2023 to June 2025. It will take children 

on a journey through representations of space 

in art and address questions such as why 

humans have always been fascinated by the 

cosmos and how the sky has been a source of 

inspiration and imagination through the ages. 

The exhibition aims to help children develop 

the observational and analytical skills needed 

to become space explorers. 

The second exhibition, Letters of Light, will 

be held from 13 September 2023 to 14 January 

2024. It will explore the Holy Books of the three 

Abrahamic religions – the Quran, the Christian 

Bible, and the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) – and their 

associated scholarly, talismanic, and mystical 

practices. Curated by Laurent Héricher and 

Dr. Souraya Noujaim, the exhibition will foster 

a dialogue between the monotheistic traditions 

while respecting the unique characteristics 

of each. 

The third exhibition, Cartier, Islamic Inspiration 

and Modern Design, will be held from 15 November 

2023 to 24 March 2024. It will highlight 

the influence of Islamic art on Cartier’s iconic 

designs and is co-organized with the Musée 

des Arts Décoratifs, the Musée du Louvre, 

France Muséums, with the support of Cartier. 

Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here 2023 will showcase 

works by artists shortlisted for the third 

Richard Mille Art Prize from 21 November 2023 

to February 2024. The fifth and final exhibition, 

Fables from East and West: from Kalila wa 

Dimna to the Fables of La Fontaine, will be 

held from 20 March 2024 to 14 July 2024. It 

will showcase the influence of animal fables 

in the ancient world. 

Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu 

Dhabi, said that the museum’s mission has 

always centred around providing an inclusive 

and engaging space where a plethora of voices, 

ideas, and stories are told. The upcoming 

exhibitions and events are a testament to the 

museum’s enduring commitment to serving 

its community, which are at the heart of all it

Alzayani’s work is rooted in themes of factual and 

fictional archaeology and explores alternative 

narratives of collective experience. 

Alzayani has participated in numerous group 

exhibitions, including And The Mirrors Are Many 

(421, Abu Dhabi, UAE, 2023), The Memory In 

Our Bones (Green Art Gallery, Dubai, UAE, 

2022), and Post Fiction: Manama (Alriwaq Art 

Space, Bahrain, 2022). He was also part of Art 

Here 2021 at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, UAE, and 

The Youth Takeover at the Jameel Art Centre, 

Dubai, UAE, in 2020. Alzayani’s work has also 

been featured in exhibitions in the USA, such 

as Kissing Through A Curtain at MASS MoCA in 

North Adams, Glass Triennial at the Sol Koffler 

Gallery in Providence, and scapes at Gelman 

Gallery in Providence, both in 2019. 

Alzayani’s accolades include the Louvre 

Abu Dhabi Richard Mille Art Prize (2021), the 

Fundación Casa Wabi x ArtReview Residency 

(2017), the Villa Lena Foundation Residency 

(2018), and the Cultural Foundation Residency 

in Abu Dhabi (2021). 

Alzayani holds a BArch from American University 

of Sharjah (2015) and an MFA in Glass 

from the Rhode Island School of Design (2019). 

Alzayani’s journey as an artist started when 

his school teachers in Bahrain recognized his 

talent. After earning a degree in architecture, 

he pursued an MFA in glass, which gave shape 

to his research-based practice. Alzayani’s 

multifaceted artwork examines the notions of 

memory, erasure, documentation, preservation 

of history, and storytelling. 

Alzayani’s use of glass, particularly glass-casting, 

explores the poetic and metaphorical 

characteristics of transparency, opacity, and 

the fragility of material to drive a narrative 

forward. The artist’s personal connection to 

sand, as a primary material in daily life, led 

him to create his latest project, “Watering the 

distant, deserting the near.” 

The installation, showcased at Louvre Abu 

Dhabi in 2021, features ancient-like tablets made 

of disintegrating damp sand, containing traces 

of Arabic inscriptions related to Ain Adhari, a 

now-dried-out freshwater spring in Bahrain. 

The title of the project is a phrase common 

to Bahrain and is mentioned in “Adhari,” a 

melancholic poem with political undertones 

written by Bahraini poet Ali Abdulla Khalifa, 

which addresses the spring and gives it an 

identity. 

Overall, Alzayani’s research-driven practice 

and use of various media allow him to create 

thought-provoking and visually stunning artworks 

that shed light on collective experiences and 

the preservation of history.

Salama Nasib: A Printmaking 

artist capturing memories and 

emotions 


Salama Nasib is an accomplished 

instructor of Visual Arts at Zayed 

University, UAE. She acquired an 

MA in Print from the prestigious Royal 

College of Art in London, UK. Before joining 

Zayed University, Nasib worked as a Studio/ 

Membership Coordinator at Tashkeel in Dubai, 

where she remained up-to-date with the latest 

art trends. While there, she managed seven 

studios, organized artistic and collaborative 

workshops, and co-curated upcoming exhibitions. 

Nasib has exhibited her work at both 

local and international venues, including Meem 

Gallery and Emirates Palace, as well as The Eli 

and Edythe Broad Art Museum in Michigan, 

and the Berlin Art Week 2017 in Berlin. She was 

also part of the inaugural batch of the Salama 

Emerging Artist fellowship, provided by the 

Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation 

and in collaboration with Rhode Island School 

of Design. Nasib was the guest artist of Past 

Forward: Exhibitions from the UAE, hosted in 

East Lansing (Michigan) in the USA, as the fifth 

destination of the touring exhibition. Recently, 

she embarked on a six-week residency at 

Dundee Contemporary Arts in Scotland, in 

collaboration with Tashkeel and the British 

Council. Nasib has collaborated with major 

organizations such as Louvre Abu Dhabi, while 

continuing to pursue her goal of establishing 

a diverse print community in the UAE by 

introducing print to her clients and teaching. 

Salama Nasib’s art is best described as 

intimate, meditative, and interactive. She is 

intimate with her subject matter, meditative with 

her print application, and interactive with her 

audience. Her art centers around the subject 

of memory and all the ideas associated with 

it, including remembering, forgetting, and 

false memories. Her personal struggle to hold 

onto certain precious memories has heavily 

influenced her recent practice, leading her to 

find printmaking as the best outlet to depict this 

struggle and meditate. Nasib’s recent research 

involves using old family photo albums as a 

reference to the past and transitioning to the 

realistic present and desired future through the 

multiple layering and applications of various 

print techniques, including photo-lithography, 

solar printing, and blind embossing. Her recent 

experiments also involve recording and 

composing her own voice as an added layer to 

the prints, giving the illusion of spoken prints, 

or better described as spoken memories. By 

incorporating sound alongside her prints, Nasib 

successfully engages her audience with her 

work, immersing them in intimate dialogues 

for unforgettable experiences.

Sarah Almehairi, born in 1998, is a 

practicing artist from Abu Dhabi, 

United Arab Emirates, and an Art 

and Art History major at New York 

University Abu Dhabi, class of 2019. Al Mehairi 

expresses herself in different mediums, 

including mixed media, sculpture, painting, 

book art, and fiber art. Her art explores the 

themes of identity, language, materiality and 

memory through narrative work as well as abstraction. 

Al Mehairi also authors poetry that 

inspire and are incorporated in her artwork. 

Her works challenge conventional modes of 

artistic production and questions the cultural 

and social constructs of traditional artistic practices. 

She has worked with Shoofi Art Calendar, 

interned with Abu Dhabi Art and the NYUAD 

Art Gallery. Al Mehairi has been a part of the 

2019 Youth Takeover group show at Jameel 

Arts Centre, Tashkeel’s 2019 group exhibition 

“Play”, exhibited at the CultureSummit Abu 

Dhabi 2018, the 35th Annual Emirates Fine Art 

Society Exhibition in 2018, and exhibited her 

final capstone solo show in NYUAD’s Project 

Space titled “Between”. 

“A thread is pulled through to make a mark. 

Time and time again the motion continues to 

complete a whole. With this, with every thread, 

a part of a story is being told. My art practice 

occurs at the intersection of narrative and abstraction. 

I explore ideas of place by looking 

at locations directly connected to my identity 

but know least about, while also engaging 

with geometric shapes, materials and form. 

New compositions–maps–are created, fitting 

shapes, making a place, “piecing” an identity. 

Through the process, moments of unfolding 

and repositioning take place, order is imposed 

and language asserts a structure. As a result, 

these elements towards telling a story is not 

so explicit, it is one exploring the push and 

pull of concealing and revealing.” Says Sarah 

“Through this, I have gained inspiration and 

access to my inherited heritage. I use family 

archives of photos, recipes, and letters to ask 

questions; to find a way to position myself 

between it all. My artwork is mainly 2D, using 

fabric and paper, with subtle sculptural elements. 

I work with a restricted neutral color 

palette, and language, to lend structure to 

this investigation. My work fluctuates between 

image and poetry, narrative and abstract. Elements 

of lines and layers are used throughout 

my pieces to explore clarity and organization. 

The threads are used in an attempt to tie it all

Can you tell us about your journey as 

a food, travel, and lifestyle blogger? How 

did you get started and what inspired 

you to focus on these specific niches? 

This has been a beautiful journey for me 

so far, spanning two years. I started this 

page exactly two years ago with no idea or 

planning. The sole purpose of starting this 

was simply because I was jobless, and I’m 

not someone who can sit idle doing nothing. 

Just to keep myself busy, I got into this. 

That’s how simple my journey started with 

my page. With no niche, no idea or vision, 

planning, or what I was going to do with the 

page. I simply trusted the process. 

What is the story behind the name 

“Table For One”? How does it relate to 

your content and overall brand? 

The name “Table For One” literally describes 

my personality because I’m someone who 

enjoys my own company rather than being 

surrounded by lots of people. Since 2017, 

I’ve been staying alone and far away from 

my parents, so most of the things I used 

to do were by myself, including dining out 

alone. That’s one thing I’m used to saying 

whenever I visit any restaurant. 

As a blogger, how do you come up 

with new content ideas to keep your 

audience engaged? Can you share some 

of your creative processes or sources of 

inspiration? 

I always tell myself not to get pressured 

to create content. That’s why, if you notice, 

you can see that 99% of the content I create 

is as natural as possible. I always think from 

the audience’s perspective and find out 

what they are looking to watch on my profile, 

and that’s how I do it. It’s very important to 

listen to your audience and find out what 

they exactly need to stay relevant. 

With so many food, travel, and lifestyle 

bloggers out there, how do you differentiate 

yourself and carve out your own unique 

brand and presence? What sets you apart 

from others in the industry? 

As I mentioned in the previous answer, I 

make sure to stay as relevant and as natural 

as possible with my content. That itself 

makes me stand out from others. Everyone 

has their own personality, and when I 

showcase my true personality to the public 

naturally, I tend to believe I stand out in the 

crowd. Also, I come from a photographer/ 

videographer background, which gives me 

an added advantage over many others out 

there, in general, to showcase the content 

in a visually pleasing way. 

Could you describe your target audience? 

Who do you primarily create content for, 

and how do you tailor your posts to cater 

to their interests and needs? 

From my research and knowledge, I firmly 

believe my target audience is university 

students and newly married couples. But I 

create any content keeping one simple thing 

in mind: whether it’s students or couples, I 

make sure my content is relatable and, most 

importantly, shareable to others. 

In terms of food blogging, what kind 

of cuisines or dining experiences do you 

enjoy featuring the most? Are there any 

specific regional or international cuisines 

that you find particularly intriguing? 

I mostly love featuring delicious eateries 

at affordable prices, considering what my 

audience is looking for. But personally, I love 

Italian cuisine, especially pasta. 

When it comes to travel, what are some 

of the factors that influence your choice 

of destinations? Do you prioritize certain 

types of experiences or locations that 

align with your brand’s vision? 

Being a traveler, I always make sure to 

consider what exciting factors the place has 

to offer me. That makes my job even more 

interesting and easier to grab my audience’s 

attention. And most importantly, I make sure 

to showcase to my audience how to travel 

to any place at an affordable. 

As a blogger, building a strong online 

presence is crucial. How do you engage 

with your audience and foster a sense 

of community? Are there any specific 

strategies or platforms that you find 

particularly effective? 

Yes, Online presence is very important in 

this field. There are 100 other new creators 

and bloggers coming out every day. To stay 

relevant and mostly to be “Remembered” 

among all is the most challenging factor. 

What I do is stay as natural as possible 

with my audiences by constantly sharing 

my personal information and day-to-day 

activities to keep them connected with 

me always. 

Looking ahead, what are your future 

plans and goals for your blog? Are there 

any exciting projects, collaborations, or 

expansions in the pipeline that you can 

share with us? 

Until this moment as I speak to you, just 

like the name says. I am a One Man Army. 

I do everything all by myself and I have 

come to a point now to grow my page with 

many other creative people. So, I’m looking 

forward to expanding my team in the coming 

days. There are plenty of projects which I’m 

working on right now. One of them is direct 

with the Government of UAE. 

How do you stay updated with the 

latest trends and developments in the 

food, travel, and lifestyle industries? Are 

there any resources or platforms you rely 

on for industry insights? 

There’s nothing such as resources I rely 

on. I simply follow my fellow creators and 

stay updated in general with whatever is 

happening to keep my content updated. 

What advice would you give to aspiring 

food, travel, and lifestyle bloggers who are 

looking to make their mark in the online 

world? What are some key lessons you’ve 

learned along the way? 

I don’t know if I’m yet able to give advice. 

But, from what I’ve learned in these 2 years, 

I’d say, staying consistent is the most 

important factor in this field. Doesn’t matter 

if you get 10 views or 1 million views. Put 

in the same amount of hard work in every 

content you create and make sure you are 

consistent. Because if you aren’t, people 

won’t remember you and they will just move 

on to another person.

Dubai’s Jameel Arts Centre is hosting the sixth edition of the Jameel Prize, titled ‘Poetry to Politics’, focused on contemporary design. The exhibition 

features eight finalists, including winner Ajlan Gharem, announced in September 2021 for his ‘Paradise Has Many Gates’ installation. 

The world’s leading award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition, the Jameel Prize, was founded in 2009 by the V&A 

and Art Jameel. The exhibition has toured several locations, including London’s V&A, Santiago’s Centro Cultural La Moneda, and El Museo 

Provincial de Bellas Artes Franklin Rawson in Argentina.

Sara Sadik – They will end 

up in ravines 

The Moroccan- Algerian artist Sara Sadik employs a range 

of mediums to create coming-of-age stories that feature 

young men overcoming obstacles and seeking moral and 

physical transformation. Her videos incorporate elements 

of video games, science fiction, everyday life, and French 

rap music to portray her subjects’ struggles and aspirations. 

In her latest installation, “Ils finiront dans des ravins” 

(They Will End Up in Ravines), Sadik draws inspiration from 

gaming arenas to present a multi-screen narrative of protagonists 

who invent their own society and devise strategies 

to safeguard their environment. Through the characters’ 

words, Sadik explores themes of resistance, self-love, 

and community, while also critiquing systems of coercion 

and social exclusion.
