HISTORY (Courtesy of Antrimcounty.org)

The first known settler to venture into Antrim county was

Abraham C. Wadsworth, a native of Connecticut, who reached

the Grand Traverse Region in 1846. A year later, he brought

his wife and family, and eventually settled near the present

site of the Elk Rapids Town Hall.

START OR MOVE YOUR BUSINESS:

Beyond our outstanding business and entrepreneurial advantages,

Northern Michigan is a great place to live and play.

Long known for unparalleled natural beauty, our region is

abundant with friendly, hometown atmospheres; exceptional

schools, outstanding health-care, nationally acclaimed

arts, cultural and historic facilities; endless four-season

recreational opportunities, and quaint downtowns bursting

with renowned shops and award-winning restaurants.

These are just a few of the many amenities that attract and

retain quality employees and working families, and provide

an unequaled standard of living.

In today’s marketplace, business no longer needs urban

roots to succeed. Modern technologies such as high speed

Internet and wireless broadband are connecting small-town

life to big-time business.

The unorganized county of Meguzee was created in 1840, and

the name was changed to Antrim in 1843. In 1863 the Legislature

organized Antrim County, attaching the unorganized

counties of Kalkaska, Crawford and Ostego, at the same time

the name of the town of Meguzee was changed to Elk Rapids,

the county seat.

In 1879 the county seat was moved to a tract of land in the

geographical center of the county. Originally the post office

at this point was called Keno, but was later renamed Bellaire,

because of the town’s clean air. The Court House was built in

1905. The present county building was occupied in 1978.

Torch Lake was called Was-Wah-gonink, or “lake of the torches”

by the local Indians, reference being made to the use of

torches in the spearing of whitefish and trout.

The first birth, death, and marriage records on file in the County

Clerk’s office are dated 1867, the minutes of the first meeting

of the Board of Supervisors are recorded on October 12, 1863,

the first election was held on April 6, 1863, when a total of 66

votes were polled.

Alden

On the southeastern shore of scenic Torch

Lake lies the quaint Village of Alden. With

a population of 125 (according to the 2010

census) that number grows substantially

during the summer months with visitors

drawn to the community “Where Neighbors Meet.”

As it was more than a century ago — when people boarded

the “Resorter” train bound for Alden — those “neighbors”

come from near and far to embrace the hidden gem of Antrim

County. And while the rails may be gone, the restored

Alden Depot remains as a landmark tribute to the village’s

past and enduring character.

Helping enhance that character are the town’s newest

attractions: a 13-foot lighthouse, which not only stands

as an aesthetic addition to the picturesque shoreline,

but also serves as an easily visible point of reference for

boaters; and a hand-built Veteran’s Memorial that honors

those who have given their service to the country,

state and community — which includes military personnel

as well as law enforcement, firefighters and EMS personnel

— who protect and safeguard the community.

From quaint shops on the east side of town to the Depot

Museum, lighthouse and Memorial nestled on the south

side of the village, Alden is filled with unique places to admire

and explore.

6

Thanks to the community-minded Alden Volunteers and Downtown

Alden Business Association, the village is never without a bevy of

activities during the warmer months. Beginning with the popular

Strawberry Festival on Father’s Day each June, the summer season

continues with the weekly Alden Strolls featuring live entertainment

and a farmers market each Thursday, followed by Alden Days, the

Classic Car Show and Art Fair in August. The celebrations wrap up

with a colorful harvest festival in the fall.

From water and recreation to charming shops and events, Alden

beckons to all who savor the beauty of northern Michigan.

GOLF

Antrim County

10+ Area Golf Courses

Experience the serenity of Antrim County’s Golf courses

as either seasoned or beginner player. Designed by some

of the best in the industry, there’s no doubt that Antrim

County courses offer incredible conditions and tremendous

variety of hole designs and scenery.

Forget what you might have heard about Michigan’s “Golf

Mecca.” Right here in the Chain of Lakes area is a golfer’s

paradise with six formidable courses concentrated within

5 miles of one another.

SHANTY CREEK GOLF: BETTER THAN PAR

by Chris Hale

Visit any of the Midwest pre-season golf shows and it’s apparent:

Golfers love Shanty Creek Resort. Having four courses at

one location provides variety, and having two of Michigan’s

Top 20 ranked public courses provides the quality they seek.

The legendary Arnold Palmer helped introduce northern

Michigan to the golfing world when The Legend at Shanty

Creek opened in 1985. Since then, scores of course architects

have chosen the glacier-carved terrain of northern Michigan

to sculpt now-classic courses. One of those architects is Tom

Weiskopf, whose Cedar River course at Shanty Creek has been

among the state’s most renowned and regarded courses since

its introduction in 1999 — including a spot in Rolex’s list of

the “Top 1,000 Golf Courses in the World.”

“Our reputation among the state’s Who’s Who in golf is a

badge we wear proudly,” says Mike Mooney, Shanty Creek’s

Director of Golf. “That pride is evidenced in our commitment

to exemplary course conditions, guest service, and overall

value.”

Beyond the quality of Shanty Creek’s golf courses is where

golfers realize that value. Within Shanty Creek are hundreds

of lodging options, plus on-and off-property dining, complimentary

transportation into downtown Bellaire, and even

more recreation off-property for boating and mountain biking.

The Chain of Lakes and the Village of Bellaire have created

so many additional ways for golfers to make a long weekend

much more enjoyable. That said, many golfers just want to

play unlimited golf day after day after day, and at Shanty

Creek, that’s certainly an option too.

Bellaire

Talk to someone that has visited the Bellaire

area and they will tell you it holds a special

place in their heart. Whether it is their firsttime

boating on Torch Lake or downhill skiing

at Shanty Creek, memories come home with

you after your first Bellaire experience. Drawing families

to return year after year, Bellaire becomes home

away from home.

Escaping up north has many meanings. For some, it

is relaxing at the lake, while others enjoy the thrill of

mountain biking, off roading, or catching a trophy walleye.

Generations reconnect over evening campfires,

boating adventures or picking fruit from the many orchards

in Antrim County. We welcome you to experience

the Bellaire area.

The village is surrounded by glacier-carved hills

and steep valleys, centrally located on the Chain

of Lakes, connecting 75 miles of waterway running

through the county.

12

Several of the larger lakes — such as Torch and Elk — are considered

among the most beautiful in the world, and the region has

long been a favorite destination for boaters, fishing enthusiasts

and golfers. After a day on the water, golf course, trails, or ski hill

— enjoy a variety of family-friendly and gourmet restaurants, grab

a glass of locally produced beer, cider or wine, or visit area farm

markets and u-picks to take home a taste of northern Michigan.

Courtesy of Shanty Creek Resort

The peaceful Intermediate River runs through downtown Bellaire,

which offers unique shops, a movie theater and picturesque park.

Stay at one of the numerous cottages, resorts, Bed & Breakfasts,

campgrounds or motels after a full day of exploring the area.

HIKING

When we think hiking, it’s more than just lacing up and going

for a walk. It’s about discovering the world around us: a beautiful

flower, a scenic vista, or a bird feeding its babies. Antrim

County has a bounty of scenic tails waiting to be discovered.

BIKING

Head to Northern Michigan for some of the best trail riding in

the state.

The Bellaire area is a bike-friendly community offering trails

for all levels of expertise. Downtown Bellaire offers bike racks

and a local bike shop, Paddles & Pedals, for all your needs.

Experience the Glacial Hills Pathway and Natural Area — discover

why it is one of the Midwest’s premier trail destinations!

Just minutes from downtown Bellaire, Glacial Hills Pathway

features 750 acres which make up a combined trail system

well-suited for hiking, biking, cross country skiing, and wildlife

viewing. Located just outside of the Village of Bellaire,

the successful protection of this land coupled with an exciting

trail system developed by experts from Michigan Mountain

Biking Association (MMBA) has created one of the most

sought after riding and trail running experiences in Michigan.

Whether you are a novice wanting to try something new or an avid

trail user, there is something for everyone at Glacial Hills.

20

GLACIAL HILLS

The almost 800 acres of land that house the 31.5 miles of Glacial Hills

trail span 3 governmental jurisdictions — Antrim County, Forest Home

Township and the Village of Bellaire. The three governments and land conservancy

co-manage Glacial Hills through a joint recreation board named

The Friends of Glacial Hills (est. June 2015) with members appointed from

each agency and 2 members at-large. Friends of Glacial Hills is a not for

profit joint recreation board and our meetings are open to the public. We

manage the Pathway and the 3 trailheads and rely 100% on the support of

our users and community with donor funding and volunteer maintenance.

Without the community’s support, Glacial Hills would not exist!

Mountain biking at Glacial Hills can best be described by the 3 “f’s” —

fast, flowy and fun. All 31.5 miles have been professionally designed and

carefully built to provide the most enjoyable experience possible. Even

better, all riders can find appropriate and fun trail that meets their skill

level. While Glacial has some impressive elevation changes for the Midwest

(several loops have high points more than 400 foot above the trailhead),

the sustainable design “hides” the climbing by incorporating flat

rest zones and even some shorter downhill sections. As an example, one

stretch of trail takes two miles to ultimately climb 300 feet and includes 5

downhill sections on the way up.

GRASS RIVER NATURAL AREA

Grass River Natural Area is a 1,492 acre nature preserve surrounding

the Grass River, located in the heart of Antrim County.

Along with the beautiful views of Grass River, we also offer

seven miles of well-maintained trails including 1.5 miles of

boardwalk floating above northern fen and cedar wetlands.

With all of these natural features, Grass River Natural Area offers

visitors an outdoor, living laboratory to explore and learn.

The Grass River Center is open year-round, offering a comfortable

learning environment for public programming, school

field trips, camps, and more.

HUNTING

No matter where you are in Michigan, you can find public

hunting land. Home to several game species including

deer, bear, turkey, waterfowl and small game, check the

Michigan DNR website for information about restrictions

and public hunting land.

PADDLING CHAIN OF LAKES WATER TRAIL

CHAIN OF LAKES WATER TRAIL

The Chain of Lakes is a highlight to our region and it is no wonder. These connected lakes are diverse paddling

opportunities on some of Northern Michigan’s clear pristine lakes. The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is one of only

eight state-designated water trails and the only water trail in Northern Michigan. This non-motorized water trail

has over 80 miles of routes to explore and something for all types of paddlers.

The Upper Chain is made up of smaller lakes and is a great experience for beginner paddlers. Paddle through a

mile of protected shoreline, check out an island, or just enjoy the calm and quiet of paddling through the crystal

waters. You can begin, end or pass through the three lakeside communities of Ellsworth, Central Lake, and

Bellaire where you will find food, camping, and all the other amenities you need to make your trip complete.

The Lower Chain includes larger lakes like Torch Lake and Elk Lake for experienced paddlers looking for an adventure.

Explore the serene Grass River Natural Area, find a sunken ship, or just enjoy the turquoise waters of

Torch Lake. In Bellaire, Alden, and Elk Rapids you will find all you need to enjoy your time on the water.

While you are here, join Paddle Antrim for a local paddling class or event on the water. For more information on

Central Lake

Photos byChris Delange

The Village of Central Lake is situated in the

heart of northern Michigan’s Chain of Lakes.

As of the 2010 census, there were 952 people

residing in the village.

Besides scenic waterways and friendly businesses,

Central Lake offers an array of recreational activities. As

a year-round vacation destination, it welcomes boaters,

kayakers, skiers, campers, snowmobilers, hunting and

fishing enthusiasts, and all who seek a peaceful getaway.

Central Lake features a picturesque modern campground

at Thurston Park, which includes 47 campsites, a playground,

a boat launch and docks.

The area’s Chain of Lakes ecosystem is divided into the

Upper and Lower Chains with six lakes each, providing an

abundance of water for all lake enthusiasts. In and outside

of the village, there are abundant biking and hiking

opportunities. Torch Lake, said to be one of the world’s

most beautiful lakes, is only three miles away.

Those wondering about air travel, Torchport and Antrim

County airports are both less than 10 miles from the village,

and Traverse City’s Cherry Capital Airport is just 45

minutes away.

Summer events in Central Lake include the Chamber’s annual

Car Show, craft fairs and the area’s largest Fourth of

28

July Parade. In addition to the parade, the holiday celebration

includes a chicken barbeque, bazaar and strawberry shortcake

extravaganza. Fireworks top off the activities at dusk to

conclude a fun-filled family day.

Central Lake is described as “an ideal spot to vacation, live

or grow a business.” Visitors traveling through the community

will discover its unique beauty and “Turn of the Century”

charm — an ideal place to call home.

Central Lake is also home to a diversity of people and professions.

According to residents, “There is a strong sense of

community in our village, and ties to the Central Lake Public

Schools are strong.”

MANCELONA BASS FESTIVAL

CELEBRATES 65TH

After taking a year break due to the

COVID19 pandemic, the sounds of

carnivals, laughter, music, parades

and fun will once again fill the air in

our communities. In Mancelona, the

annual Bass Festival will run over Memorial Day week-end,

May 27-31, 2021, a week earlier than its usual date.

The Bass Festival was created by the Liars Club, a group of

men who got together to talk fishing, and often called each

other out for telling tall tales of the ‘big one that got away.’

For most of its years, the festival included a fishing tournament,

but Department of Natural Resources laws changed

and affected the way the contest is now held.

While the event pays tribute to the popular fish species, today’s

festival is packed to the gills with fun for the whole

family. Events include a carnival, flea market, crafters fair,

entertainment, parades, car show, games for the kids and

more. The parade is set for Saturday, May 29, 2021 downtown

Mancelona. Most activities take place at Palmer Park,

on the village’s south east side.

Current State and Health Department COVID safety regulations

will be enforced to maintain a compliant event.

Mancelona

Photography by Joanie Moore

The Village of Mancelona is situated along the busy

US-131 corridor on the east side of Antrim County,

inland from the captivating chain o’ lakes. It is

home to some of the region’s key outdoor events,

rewarding the locals with many opportunities to greet visitors

and extend friendly hospitality.

The Township, and later the Village, took its name from the

daughter of the first settler to locate at the site of the town.

Mancelona Andress was the daughter of Perry Andress.

Mancelona came here with her parents in 1869 when she

was four years old. The Village of Mancelona organized and

the first Village Council met April 18, 1889.

Mancelona has maintained momentum and continues

to see progress with development and growth. Investors

have purchased abandoned and distressed properties,

restoring them into housing and economic opportunities.

Explore131north.org was launched following several years

of studies, planning and meetings with community leaders

from Cadillac to Petoskey, including Mancelona. The

Website focuses on communities along the U.S. 131 North

corridor, highlighting each of the area’s assets. Decals can

be ordered from the Website, free of charge.

Winter is a favorite season for those who love outdoor recreation.

Snowmobilers arrive by the thousands, navigating the

miles of meticulously groomed trails that wind through scenic

Jordan River and Jordan Valley, Deadman’s Hill, and areas

around Lakes of the North and Alba. Competitive snowmobile

drag-race events are held throughout winter as snow

conditions permit. Shanty Creek Resort has three properties

for those who love to ski and snowboard.

The annual White Pine Stampede is a premiere point-topoint

ski race held each year the first Saturday in February.

Volunteers from Mancelona and Bellaire work check-points

along the scenic trail, providing moral support and encouragement

to participants right up to the finish lines of the

10K, 20K and 50K events. Races begin in Mancelona and end

at Schuss Mountain and Shanty Creek resort villages.

Village of Mancelona holds a fishing day for the trout season

opener on the last Saturday in April. Johnson’s Pond

32

is stocked with trout, and fishing at the village-owned pond is open year-around to

children 14 years of age and younger.

As the season changes and the blanket of snow transforms into spring, the elusive

Morel mushroom begins to surface. For many, mushrooming in May has become a

must-do, trekking through thousands of acres of woods in search of the delicacy.

It’s to your advantage to get sidetracked and stumble upon some of Mother Nature’s

greatest assets to the region. Landslide Creek Overlook, Wetzel Lake, Sand Lake,

Johnson’s Pond and Green Lake are all favorite places to escape for a peaceful retreat.

The breathtaking views of peaceful Deadman’s Hill scenic overlook, Jordan Valley, and the Jordan Valley National Fish Hatchery

round out the essentials for a picture-perfect day.

After Memorial Day, Mancelona hosts the annual Bass Festival, complete with a carnival, flea market, parades, entertainment,

chicken barbeque and family fun. Throughout the summer, Mancelona Chamber of Commerce hosts several music concerts

downtown, free to the public. Nearby lakes provide outdoor opportunities for fishmen, boaters and swimmers, while golfers

spend an afternoon on one of the courses at Shanty Creek Resort. In season, local gardeners and crafters host the Farmers

Market each Thursday at the intersection of US-131 and M-88.

In fall, camouflage and hunter’s orange are

the prevalent wardrobe colors. The annual

Buck Pole contest has been drawing deer

hunters from throughout Michigan for over

66 years. On November 15 and 16, the opening

days of firearms deer season, the Chamber

of Commerce gives away more than 100

prizes including cash and gift certificates

during the popular hunting contest.

Those that know our history know that many

of our founding families hailed from Kentucky,

coming to Mancelona for jobs at the

Iron Works. Generations later, they are still

here because they choose to be — and love

calling Mancelona their home.

FARMERS MARKETS OPEN

with Fresh Produce, Vegetables, Crafts

More and more,

society has become

food conscious. We

are choosing healthy

produce options and farmfresh

meats. Local farmers

gather together every year from May

through October and participate in farmers markets to sell

their fresh produce, baked goods, plants, and handcrafted

items. Both the Bellaire Farmers Market (open Fridays

8-12 pm) and the Mancelona Farmers Market (open

Thursdays 3-7 pm) have been around for years and

have dedicated farmers that sign up to vend each year.

These farmers spend much time year-round planning,

planting, caring and harvesting their gardens and fields.

Vendors have partnered together to form food hubs at

Mancelona and Bellaire. Now, shoppers may pre-order and

pay for their orders online, and orders will be conveniently

packaged and ready for pick-up on the assigned day. Follow

social media for Torch Lake Co-Op and Mancelona Farmers

Market for details on current ordering cycles, pick-up times

and options.

Supporting the local farmers markets helps keep small

farmers in business.
