LUCKY CRUISE passengers in
Akaroa Harbour have caught
a rare glimpse of a humpback
whale in the area.
The whale was spotted near
the entrance to the harbour,
travelling north on Saturday
with the skipper moving to get a
closer look.
said it was
an exciting
moment for all
on board.
“We were
heading back into the harbour
and I saw it in the back of my eye.
It looked like a big boat in the
distance but I saw its blowhole
and knew what it was.”
Waghorn said it is a reasonably
rare occurrence that seems to be
more frequent this year than in
previous years.
He said it was a treat for the
many Australian passengers on
board.
“It was a great surprise for
them.
“They loved it, they all got
out the front of the boat, lots of
cameras were out.”
Police criticised over
bar CCTV footage
• By Emily Moorhouse
A BAR is disappointed with
police for not responding to
CCTV footage they supplied
after a suspected arson.
Two weeks ago The Bower on
New Brighton Rd suffered damage
to its outdoor area after it
caught fire.
CCTV footage sent to the
police showed a man hanging
around the outdoor area when
the fire started, and two weeks
before the fire.
The fire started about 6.40pm
on April 26. The bar was closed
at the time.
A rugby team training in
nearby Bower Park saw it and
helped extinguish it.
Pierre de Lautour, whose partner
owns the bar, said he was
still waiting to hear from police
about the CCTV footage.
“We’ve been asking if they’ve
got hold of the guy and that but
there’s been no reply,” de Lautour
said yesterday.
“Last Thursday I’ve seen him
out on his push bike again going
past the pub and down New
Brighton Rd so I don’t know
what the story is.”
A police spokesperson told
The Star yesterday anyone who
could identify the person in the
stills from the CCTV footage
should contact them.
The spokesperson said police
believed the person in the
footage could “assist us with
inquiries.”
Said de Lautour: “I just would
have thought that there might be
a bit more follow up but I don’t
know if they’re too busy or what.
It would be good to kind of just
put it all to rest and just move on
kind of thing.”
• If you have any information
which may assist, phone police
on 105 and quote file number
220426/9114, or alternatively,
information can be provided
anonymously to Crime
Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
