ThePublicPierextendstothenorthernedgeoftheCove,andoperatesasaboat
dockfortheCoastalEcologyResearchLab(18)wherethesite’scurrentseaturtle
researchwillbeconductedalongsideotherenvironmentalresearchdedicatedto
coastalenvironmentsandthesite’sagriculture,arboricultureandgastronomy.Inthe
Lab’scurrentlocation,amassiveshedprovidespresentdayservicesandboat
storage.Thisstoragecanbeaccommodatedatanotherlocationtoenablerestoration
oftheHeritagePark’slandscape.Exchangingmangrovesforthepollutionassociated
withthefossilfuel-basedoilmarineeconomyhasalteredtheexperienceand
ecologyofthePark.TheResearchcenterwillbetheuncloggedheartofHaulover
Park–leadingtherestorationeffortalongsidetheresidentchefsatUMAMIAMI.
JustnorthoftheCoastalEcologyResearchLab,ArboricultureandBeeHives(19)will
replacethepresentdayblueshedandparkinglot.TheArboriculturezonewillbethe
hometofruitbearingtreesandtreeswithediblebarks,leavesorotherpartsto
provideUMAMIAMIyear-roundandseasonalharveststoproduceFloridaspecific
cuisineandbeverages.FromTamarindtoYauponHolly,thesitewillsupporta
diversearrayoftreespeciestopromoteahealthystandofediblesworking
symbioticallytomitigatepestsandnutrientdepletion.Assoilsbecomedeprivedof
nutrients,plantingswillbereplacedwithnutrienthealingspeciesthatoftencome
withthebenefitofproducingedibleparts.ThemanagementoftheArboricultureis
notaimedatgivingUMAMIAMIwhatitwantsonthemenu,butwhatispossiblefor
thisareatogrowsustainablyandorganically.Ifplantedandmanagedcorrectly,these
plantspecieswillprovidetheirownpestprotectionandnutrientreplenishment.

TheMangrovestandcurrentlyoccupyingtheNorthwestcornerofHauloverPark
willbeexpandedintoafullMangroveForest (21)toaccommodateanOysterFarm
tobemanagedandharvestedforUMAMIAMIandthetestkitchensonsite.Asingle
matureoysteroftheCrassostrearhizophorae(MangroveOyster)speciescanfilter
upto50gallonsofwateraday.TheOysterFarmprovidesadoublebenefitforthe
sitebycleaningthebaywater,whilealsoprovidingadelicacyforpatronsto
consume.AmongtheMangroveForestandOysterFarmtheResearchFellow
Housing(20)willenabletheCulinaryandCoastalEcologyResearchFellowstolive
onsitewithParkRangerstoprovide24/7stewardship.This“liveonthelandthat
feedsyou”modelwillincentivizetheResearchFellowstoprotectandpreservethe
siteforatrulycradletocradleoperation.WestoftheMangroveForestandResearch
FellowHousing,aDockandBoathousewithanoutlettothebaywillenableservice
andstoragefortheFellows.
AdjacenttotheResearchFellowHousingaCommunalGardenandAgriculture(22)
enabletheresidentstoprovideforthemselvesandtheirfamilies.Anyabundant
producefromthisgardenwillbepreservedandstoredforemergencyuseorfor
utilizationatUMAMIAMIandtheTestKitchensonsite. ABoardwalk(21.1)will
enablepassagethroughtheMangroveForestandconnecttheCommunalGarden
andtheResearchFellowHousingdemonstratingselfsufficiencyandaco-existence
amongthemangroves.
ThelastPedestrianTunnel(23.1)connectsthisbaysideagriculturalcommunityzone
tothebeach,throughtheuniqueexperienceofaboardwalkthattraversespartofthe
expandedMangroveForest–introducingvisitorstotheecologicalshiftatthisregion
ofthesite.Onthecoastaloutletportal,thetunnelleadsthetravelertoawinding
pathwaythatpassesarestroomandreachesaDuneCrossover.Attheendofthis
crossoveristhenorthernhalfoftheNaturalistBeach(23.2)andbeyond,Haulover
Park’spublicbeachends(23.3)andthecoasttransitionstoalineofcondominiums.
