Night Firing Activity<br />
2nd June <strong>2022</strong><br />
The general public is to be advised that<br />
a New Zealand Army Exercise will be<br />
conducted in the WMRR area over the<br />
period 2nd June <strong>2022</strong>.<br />
The exercise will involve up to 20<br />
personnel of 2/1 Battalion from<br />
Burnham Military Camp.<br />
Training will involve soldiers conducting<br />
a live firing static shoot on the range from<br />
7pm – 9pm.<br />
The New Zealand Army takes fire risk<br />

Range Shooting and Night Firing<br />
Activity is taking place on<br />
30th <strong>May</strong> – 17th June <strong>2022</strong><br />
The general public is to be advised that a<br />
NZ Army Exercise will be conducted on the<br />
West Melton Rifle Range area over the<br />
period of 30th <strong>May</strong> – 17th June <strong>2022</strong>.<br />
The exercise will involve up to 30<br />
personnel of 2/1 Battalion RNZIR from<br />
Burnham Military Camp. Range firing<br />
between 0800 and 1700hrs daily.<br />
Training will involve soldiers firing on the<br />
range and will include Night Shooting on<br />
Tuesday 7th June with all firing finished no<br />
later than 11 pm.<br />
No soldiers will be moving in public with<br />
weapons during this exercise.<br />

<strong>2022</strong> OTIRA - TAIPO POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION<br />
Vector Free Marlborough Limited (VFML) wishes to advise the public of its intention to<br />
aerially apply the toxin Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) to parts of the Westland, South<br />
Westland Alps and Westcoast Divide TMA’s for the purpose of controlling possums. The<br />
Otira – Taipo operation is being carried out on behalf of OSPRI as part of its TBfree New<br />
Zealand programme, which aims to eradicate bovine tuberculosis from wildlife vectors that<br />
pose a risk to farmed cattle herds in downstream areas.<br />
Description of Area<br />
The Otira – Taipo permission area takes in approximately 30,930 hectares of the Otira and<br />
Taipo catchments. The boundary of the permission area extends from the SH73 bridge<br />
over Big Wainihinihi River to Aickens corner near the confluence of the Otira and Taramakau<br />
rivers, then follows Aicken Ridge upstream toward Goat Pass at the head of the Deception<br />
Valley. From Goat Pass it extends west along the snowline of the Southern Alps, crosses<br />
SH73 at the summit of Arthur’s Pass and continues west into the headwaters of the Taipo<br />
catchment. From the Taipo catchment it follows the Campbell Range in a northerly direction,<br />
thence along Razorback Ridge to Big Wainihinhi River. Most land in the permission area<br />
is administered by the Department of Conservation but several small tracts of land held by<br />
various private and institutional owners are also included. The nearest settlement is Otira<br />
Village which is excluded from the operation. A detailed map may be obtained from VFML<br />
as per contact details below.<br />
Commencement Date<br />
Control is scheduled to commence from 1 June <strong>2022</strong>, with the aerial application of nontoxic<br />
cereal pre-feed pellets. This will be followed approximately 7-10 days later by the<br />
aerial application of bait containing biodegradable sodium fluoroacetate (1080). All work<br />
is weather dependent, and commencement may be later than indicated. In the event of an<br />
extended delay, further notices will be placed to advise the public.<br />
Bait Description<br />
• Pre-feed - Non-toxic cereal-based pellet, approximately 16mm long and cinnamonlured.<br />
Prefeed for this operation will be dyed green as part of a suite of measures to<br />
minimise risk to kea.<br />
• Toxic bait - Cereal-based pellet, approximately 20mm long, cinnamon- lured and dyed<br />
green with a toxic loading of 0.15% Sodium fluoroacetate (1080).<br />
Note, hand-laid 1080 may be used for supplemental ground-based control in areas unsuited<br />
for aerial application.<br />
Precautions<br />
The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose,<br />
particularly to children and dogs.<br />
• DO NOT TOUCH OR EAT BAITS<br />
• Children must be kept under strict supervision in the control area<br />
• Dogs must be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to, or be taken<br />
into, the control area, as they are particularly susceptible to harm from contact with<br />
toxic baits and poisoned carcasses. The risk that poisoned carcasses pose to dogs<br />
may extend downstream of the control area.<br />
• Toxin warning signs will be installed at main public entry points and the public are<br />
reminded that it is an offence to remove this warning signage. Please follow the<br />
instructions on the signs.<br />
• Game animals should not be sold or taken for eating from within or adjacent to this<br />
area until it is declared clear of pesticides.<br />
