Unification aim of poem’s
message on
peace rock
A POEM inspired to unite people
following the mosque attacks has
been installed on a peace rock for
others to enjoy.
After the March 15 mosque attacks
Sirwan Mohamadi, of Riccarton
wrote a poem to remember the tragedy
and to inspire hope for a united
future.
His dream was to have the poem,
called Peace, Love and Unity, put on
a plaque on a standing rock in Harrington
Park for all to appreciate.
He approached Oak Development
Trust to find out if it was possible and
the trust got behind him to make this
project happen.
Peace, Love and Unity
A reoccurring theme in my book
To a brighter future we must look
Muslim, Christian or jew
This is for all of you
Black, brown, yellow or white
Together we must unite
And push back against hate
Because there is no time to wait
Now rise and take each other’s hand
As this is the only way we can make a stand
MESSAGE: The poem
$5m revamp planned for hotel
• By Emily Moorhouse
A POPULAR Halswell hotel
is set to undergo renovations
expected to cost more than $5
million.
Renovations will start on
Craythorne’s Hotel over the next
two-to-three months, after it was
bought by The Oxford Group last
year.
The Oxford Group runs Fat
Eddies, Original Sin, The Bog,
Kong and The Bealey Quarter,
and is co-owned by well known
hospitality industry businessman
Max Bremner.
Bremner said they are in the
final stages of planning what
renovations will be done to the
hotel and bar and what these will
look like.
“We’re getting there, we’re
probably 95 per cent done,” he
said. “It will be something for
everyone, it will be a great neighbourhood
hotel.”
Bremner wasn’t sure when the
renovations would be completed.
“It all comes down to supply
of products. It all comes down to
lots of things really.”
Bremner said designs include
a big outdoor area as well as upgrades
to the hotel rooms, which
would be a “considerable spend”.
While he couldn’t say exactly
how much the renovations would
cost, he said it would be “well
over five million”.
FRESH: Renovations will begin on Craythorne’s Hotel over
the next two-to-three months.
NEW LOOK: An artist’s impression shows what renovations are in store for on the hotel on its Facebook page.
Plaque in the
heart of well
used area
• From page 1
Mohamadi said he wrote the
poem as his way to process how
he felt after the attacks.
His desire is that the poem
would inspire people to be united
and to help one another stand
together for a better future.
Harrington Park on Peverel St
was chosen because it is in the
heart of Riccarton and is wellknown
and well used.
When asked why Oak Development
Trust chose to get on board
with the project, trust manager
Carol Renouf said: “We are committed
to work with our community
to see ideas and possibilities
come to fruition. We are excited
that this has happened.”
Local businesses have also got
behind the project with landscaping
company Gardenmakers
donating the Port Hills rock for
the plaque to be attached to.
Monument business Decra Art
donated the plaque containing
the poem, while Wellington artist
Ruby Jones gave permission to use
her artwork.
The trust’s community development
worker Nicki Aitken
co-ordinated the project and said
that although it has been a long
journey, the finished result makes
it all worthwhile.
“The rock looks so natural
there and has great message for
everyone.”
Garden,
pantry
on the
move
• By Fiona E lis
CURRENTLY thriving in
peak season, this summer will
be the last in Peverel St for the
Riccarton Community Garden
and Pātaka.
However, Nick Te Paa (right)
is staying positive abou the
move that wi l be required
when the lease on the 151
Peverel St site expires in September.
Te Paa and his wife Loretta
helped set up the community
garden in 2013, later expanding
the projec to include a community
pantry, or pātaka.
At not quite 4 sq m, the
pātaka was too small for the
weekly average of about 40
people it helped to feed, Te Paa
said.
“We don’t have the capacity
to store here, so a lot of the stuff
is stored at my place, in the
garage.”
He hoped to rebuild it at
twice the current size when a
new location was settled on.
“A l that extra wi l be just
storage space, and that’ l
free up my garage. One side’s
completely taken up with food.”
The end of the Kāinga Ora
lease was likely to mean the
separation of the garden and
the pantry.
Community
patrol
tasked with
monitoring
dangerous
intersections
• By Fiona E lis
A VOLUNTEER community
patrol has been tasked with
policing dangerous intersections
in a bid to improve driver
behaviour.
The Hornby Community
Patrol has been monitoring three
intersections, including one where
a cyclist died after colliding with a
truck.
Patrol
secretary Ann
Smith said
the patrol had
been tasked
by police with
focusing on the
three locations,
including the
intersection of
Shands and Halswe l
Junction Rds, where cyclist
Russell Ramsden was ki led last
May.
The Buchanans and Carmen
Rds intersection was also being
monitored, along with the
Main South and Springs Rds
intersection.
This is part of a steady but
quiet summer for the 45-member
volunteer team, who patrol
between five and six times per
week.
Simply being seen made a
difference, Smith said.
Returning stolen
bikes to owners
THREE WEEKS after a bike
registration service aimed at
retrieving stolen bikes launched,
a bike flagged as stolen has been
reunited with its owner.
Police and the city council
teamed up with 529 Garage, a free
bike registration service aimed
at discouraging bike thefts last
month.
Soon after, a bike owner who
thought they would never see their
bike again has got his wheels back.
Mark Anderson’s bike was stolen
from the bike shed at his apartment
building in the central city in
February.
To his surprise, he spotted it in a
nearby property soon after it was
stolen. Anderson called police who
visited the address, but the bike
had been moved.
He’d seen something about
529 Garage in the media, so he
registered his bike and flagged it as
stolen.
Unfortunately, he didn’t have
the serial number, but he did have
clear photos of his bike.
Constable Olivia Bensley, one of
the police administrators for 529
Garage, was executing a warrant in
relation to other stolen items when
she saw Anderson’s bike.
“Without the serial number it
would have been almost impossible
to identify. Coincidentally, I’d seen
his bike on 529 Garage when I was
trying to identify a different bike,”
Bensley said. “It was pure chance
that I recognised it when I saw it at
the address.”
Although a few parts had been
switched out, there was a recognisable
scratch on the frame that
Anderson said happened when he
crashed while mountain biking in
the Port Hills.
A police spokesperson said
although the bike was located at a
nearby address, theft charges are
yet to be laid in relation to Anderson’s
stolen bike.
Bensley asked Dave Johnson
from RAD Bikes, a community
bike workshop, to give the bike
a spruce up, then arranged for
Anderson to visit the police station
to collect it.
“Registering my bike on 529
Garage was easy but I didn’t really
expect to see it again,” Anderson
said. “I prefer biking to driving
a car, unless it’s raining, so I’m
thrilled to have it back.”
Since its launch on April 12, over
1500 bikes have been registered on
529 Garage.
A police spokesperson said
while Anderson was lucky that his
bike was identified and recovered
without the serial number, it’s important
to register your bike before
it’s stolen.
register your bike, go to
LAYBY WELCOME
We’ve just released this year’s Budget,
which sets out the next steps in our
plan to build a secure future for
New Zealand. This includes a cost
of living package which will help
ease the pressure for people here in
Christchurch.
Right now, the fundamentals of our
economy are strong. Our strong
health response protected our
economy through COVID-19, and
we’ve pulled through better than
almost anywhere else in the world.
But we know that, despite these
positive indicators, things are tough
right now for many families, as global
inflation affects prices here at home.
That’s why in this year’s Budget,
we’ve included a comprehensive
cost of living package. This package
includes a new temporary payment
to help Kiwis earning up to $70,000
a year with higher food and power
bills. It also includes an extension
to our fuel tax cut, reduced road
user charges and half price public
transport for further two months,
and we’re permanently halving public
transport fares for people on low
incomes. Alongside these measures,
we’re taking action on supermarkets
to make sure Kiwis are paying a fair
price at the checkout.
It is important we do what we can
to take the hard edges off the global
factors that are affecting us here in
New Zealand, and these practical
measures will help families here in
Canterbury and across the country.
Of course, as we do this, we’ll
continue to carefully manage the
books – and our careful fiscal
management means we return to
surplus faster than National did after
the global financial crisis.
There’s a lot more in the Budget
that will benefit people here in
Christchurch, and if you’d like to read
more, I’d encourage you to check out
The focus of a successful school is the pupil. The growth of our children at Kirkwood is
supported by the many extension opportunities we offer over and above our classroom
activities. We work on extending learning opportunities in a number of areas.
Technology
Some of the highlights in our technology
area include:
• Robotics;
• 3D Printing;
• EPro8 Challenge;
• Fashion Design and Make.
Technology is a favourite area for many
students due to the ‘hands-on’ problem
solving approach to learning.
Music
Music is taught as part of the
performing arts curriculum in
all classrooms however, extra
opportunities are available
for students to learn a wide
variety of music.
This year, our students have
been learning the Guitar,
Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute,
Brass, singing in the Choir
and playing in the Orchestra.
Sports/Hākinakina
Apart from the regular physical education
programmes within the classrooms
there are many other sports offered at
Kirkwood. Some of the sports played
are Netball, Football, Cross Country,
Swimming, Rugby, Basketball, Water
polo, Korfball, Mountain Biking, Touch
Rugby, Tchoukball and Rugby League.
Extension Groups, Competitions and Events
Our students have many opportunities to participate in various competitions and events offered
at Kirkwood.
These include:
• University of Canterbury
Academic Competitions;
• Cantamath;
• Canterbury-Westland
Science Fair;
Awards
• Science Badges;
• Otago Problem Solving;
• Art Cup;
• Kids’ Lit Quiz;
• Orchestra;
• Choir;
• Leadership Opportunities;
• House Captains;
• School Production;
• School Council.
We value and encourage personal excellence which is recognised with our ‘Blues’ Awards system.
2023 Enrolments
As Kirkwood Intermediate School now has a school zone, we are encouraging all applications,
including those out-of-zone applications, to be in before 31 August 2022 for the 2023 school
year.
We intend to hold Open Day sessions this year by appointment for various dates in July and
August. This is instead of our traditional Open Day/Night.
Please visit our Kirkwood Intermediate School website for further details.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Liquor store takes pride
in its customer service
Over 20 years ago, the Liquor Store was first established in Goulding
Avenue, Hornby with business owner at the time, Tony Baillie. Today’s owner,
Wendy, came on board as a duty manager six months later.
As the business flourished, it outgrew its premises, so two years later it
moved to its current purpose-built store in Carmen Road and became known
as The Hornby Liquor Centre. When Tony retired three years ago, Wendy
purchased the business.
For well over two decades now, the Hornby Liquor Centre has been
servicing customers all around Christchurch providing a comprehensive
range of beer, wine, cider, spirits and RTDs. “We also have a range of unique
items and can cater for all occasions as well as sourcing products that may not
be readily available,” Wendy says.
“We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service and we place an
emphasis on quality customer service to ensure a positive personal experience
for every customer. Our motto is ‘big on being local’.
“I enjoy the interaction with the people over the years and that’s what
makes the job interesting and enjoyable for me.”
Hornby Liquor Centre is also a proud supporter of Westview Harness
Racing, Ruapuna Speedway and Papanui Club Bowls along with many other
organisations.
Hornby Liquor Centre is part of the largest liquor store chain in New
Zealand with outlets across the country.
The store is located at 64 Carmen Road with plenty of off-street parking.
It is open seven days a week – Monday to Wednesday 10am-7pm, Thursday
10am-7.30pm, Friday and Saturday 9.30am-8pm and Sunday 10am-5pm.
COMFY HOME FOR A
WELSH THESPIAN
Norman, a resthome resident at Ryman’s
Margaret Stoddart Retirement Village
in Riccarton, loves the chance to chat,
bringing up wonderful snippets from his
full and adventurous life.
The Welsh thespian has shared many of
his stories to other village residents and
is never short of a smile or an anecdote.
Following a stay in hospital, and
recovering from a serious illness, Norman
eventually needed an increased level of
care that he has been happy to receive
at Margaret Stoddart.
When his son and daughter brought him
to the village it was a bit of a surprise, as
prior to his hospital stay, he had been
living in his Hei Hei home.
Norman says he has adapted smoothly
into village life. He was ‘co-opted into the
village choir’ and has talked to the men’s
club about different times in his life.
Norman started his career in theatre
and film when he was young, attending
the Welsh College of Music and Drama.
During this time, he also spent a year or
so as part of the National Service UK,
travelling with his regiment to the desert
area of Libya to help clear landmines left
behind from World War II.
A move to New Zealand saw him enter
the world of television. He worked with
actors including Lucy Lawless on shows
like Xena: Warrior Princes and Hercules:
The Legendary Journeys.
“I had worked with her (Lucy) before that,
it was a series called Marlin Bay, which
was about a casino town (in Northland)
…I did a guest appearance in that,”
he remembers.
Over the years Norman worked with
other celebrities including David Bowie,
Bill Travers, Susan Hampshire and
Anthony Hopkins.
Today, Norman is creating new memories
at Margaret Stoddart, where he enjoys
both village life and getting out and about
on a motorised scooter. He says he has
made friends with other residents, and
often catches up with a group of them in
the dining room for a meal.
The staff are wonderful, he adds.
He enjoys learning languages and tests
out his knowledge and progress with
‘hello and how are you?’ conversations
with team members that have a range
of home countries from Romania to
Argentina, Malaysia, the Philippines, and
the Pacific Islands.
The village is close to beautiful Hagley
Park, the city centre and Riccarton Mall,
which Norman often visits.
The central location of the boutique
village allows residents to take advantage
of the many amenities Riccarton and
the central city have to offer, while also
having the benefit of being tucked away
from the hustle and bustle.
“It also has what older people value; a
bus stops close to the village! It’s great
for those residents who don’t drive
anymore,” says Margaret Stoddart Village
Manager, Merrin Jack.
Merrin says that care rooms are the
perfect combination of independence
and support, providing the best of
both worlds.
“Margaret Stoddart offers you the ability
to maintain your wellbeing without the
worries,” Merrin says.
“You’re never alone. Life is so
much easier.”
Being there when you need us is
just one of the ways we’re pioneering
a new way of living.
NEW Aura Air Purifier – enjoy
Scientifically proven to
eliminate SARS-CoV-2 by
99.998%, keeping indoor air
safe and healthy.
Preventative home
maintenance tips
Check your water tanks, pipes and
outside taps
Consider turning off outside taps to avoid
freezing and bursting. Covering water
tanks and pipes is a cost-effective way of
preventing this and reduces heat loss.
Consider your outdoor safety
and security
With the evenings being darker earlier,
frosts on outdoor steps, decks and pathways
are a slipping hazard.
Ensure you have adequate outdoor
lighting, a clutter free and smooth pathway
to your rubbish bins, woodpile, external
garage or sleepout.
Clean up spills immediately. Consider
moisture-absorbent mats and handrails.
Cut back your trees
With the leaves already fallen, now is a
good time to assess your trees and trim
back any dead branches and branches
overhanging your windows, spouting and
roof. Check your roof for leaks, loose nails,
and that it has a sound coating. Also look
for moss and algae.
Clear your gutters, drains and
downpipes
An accumulation of autumn leaves can
quickly block gutters, which can lead to
roof leaks, overflow and flooding. Consider
protecting your gutters from birds, hail and
leaves.
Stagnant water may freeze resulting in
gutters and downpipes coming loose or
collapsing.
Blocked drains are a potential health
hazard, create an unpleasant odour and
attracts bugs and small pests.
Store your seasonal equipment
with care
Before you put your lawnmower and
weedeater away for the season, run low or
drain the petrol. Petrol goes off and come
spring your old petrol can adversely affect
the performance of your equipment and
block up your filters.
Cover outdoor furniture and secure
items, such as trampolines, which may get
blown around in strong winds.
Consider options to extend your outdoor
living all year round.
Prepare your
home for winter
Minimise your heat loss
Insulation
Without insulation, approx. 30-35%
of the heat loss occurs through the roof,
20-30% through windows, and 20-25%
through walls. The floor and air leakage
make up the balance.
Drafts
Seal up any unused openings such as cat
doors and open fireplaces.
Use draft stopping tape around windows
and tape, door ‘sausages or a rolled-up
towel for doors.
Double glaze windows, there is a wide
range of DIY Window insulation kits that
are both effective and economical.
Downlight fittings
Some modern LED downlights have
insulation fitted over them, instead of
leaving a gap for fire prevention.
Super-efficient LEDs use less energy
and can save lighting costs. Ask a lighting
specialist or registered electrician for
advice.
Simple steps to reduce dampness
Air your home regularly
Open doors and windows for 10-15
minutes each morning or use a ventilation
system.
Use energy efficient, low
emissions heaters
Heat rooms being used to at least 18˚C.
Don’t use unflued or portable gas heaters.
Use extractor fans
They can help to get rid of moisture in
the bathroom and laundry and use a fan or
rangehood in the kitchen.
Use lids on pots when you cook
This helps to stop the steam escaping.
Turn on the fan before a shower
or bath
Shut the bathroom door and open the
window slightly. Afterwards, leave the fan
running until the moisture clears.
Move furniture away from walls in
winter
A 10cm gap discourages mould
(especially on external walls).
Dry washing outside
Use a washing line or rack in the garage
or a under covered area.
Leave wardrobes slightly open
A little air circulation discourages mould
growing on fabric.
Customers proud to use
recycled building products
Exploring Musgroves’ sheds with
their huge variety of recycled and new
building products can be a fascinating and
rewarding experience.
This iconic Canterbury company has
been recycling building materials for the
last 50 years, and not only do they have
an incredible range of products that are
well organised and displayed, but, over
that time, they have also built themselves
a reputation for providing exceptional
service.
The reviews from their many customers
(whether they be homeowners, business
owners or tradies) repeatedly refer to the
care and commitment of Musgroves’ longserving
team members, who have gone
above and beyond to assist them with their
many and varied project needs.
General manager Sue Brown confirms
that Musgroves has thousands of repeat
customers that come from all round the
South Island (and beyond) to find treasures
for their projects. “Whether it be to look
for T&G flooring for their new build, a
french door for their home renovation, a
sliding door for their sleepout, doors and
windows for their child’s playhouse, or
timber beams for a business fitout, there are
numerous reasons why people come to visit
our yard.”
As Sue also says, you only need to look
at the Wall of Fame on their website to get
a sense of the pride that their customer
community takes in being able to reuse
the products that Musgroves sells for their
build or renovation projects.
Upcycling and recycling is alive and
well at Musgroves in Wigram and once
you have talked to any member of the
Musgroves’ team you will have the sense
that sustainability is not just a current fad
there, but rather it is in their DNA. But,
until you have paid them a visit you won’t
be able to fully appreciate the huge range
of building materials that Musgroves can
supply you with.
Minor amendment to the enrolment scheme
of Avonhead School
The Ministry of Education is proposing a minor amendment to
the enrolment scheme of Avonhead School.
This minor amendment clarifies the zone boundary so that
the home zone map and written description more accurately
represent which addresses are in-zone. To view the map and
written description, please go to
https://consultation.education.govt.nz/education/avonheadschool-minor-amendment/
There are no changes to any individual’s eligibility to enrol as a
result of this minor amendment.
The enrolment of out-of-zone students is governed by the
provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020.
