Help after flood earns farmer award

A MOUNTAIN of silt is a 

reminder for George Masefield 

of the deluge that left farmers 

stranded for days on Banks 

Peninsula. 

The peninsula suffered an 

unseasonal weather bomb with 

350mm of rain landing in an 

isolated area from Lavericks 

Bay to Flea Bay over 15 hours 

on December 15. 

Not one to stand aside when 

others need help, Masefield 

took on the co-ordinating role 

to help farmers get food, communication 

and the assistance 

they needed. 

That earned him an 

outstanding service award at 

the monthly meeting of North 

Canterbury Federated Farmers. 

“It was a wee bit out of the 

blue and I didn’t expect to 

get anything like that,” he 

said. 

“I just did what I had to do 

and wasn’t looking for any 

recognition or anything on 

those lines.”

HISTORIC YEW Cottage in 

Akaroa is likely to be leased out 

as a residential dwelling once it is 

repaired. 

The Te Pataka o Rakaihautu 

Banks Peninsula Community 

Board has re-endorsed a resolution 

to approve the future use of 

the cottage as a residential dwelling 

that can be leased out once 

repaired and funding for the work 

has been allocated by the city 

council over the next two years. 

Board members have discussed 

plans for the restoration and use 

of the cottage, including its designation 

as a heritage building in 

the District Plan. 

The board also raised some concerns 

about the cost of the project 

and the possibility of future cost 

increases to restore and move the 

cottage. 

It also sought assurances 

from city council staff that local 

construction companies will be 

given the opportunity to tender 

for the work, and that the board 

be informed if the estimated 

costs of renovation increased far 

beyond the current projected 

costs.

a huge hit since they set up on 

Sunday afternoons in late May. 

They finish on Monday

winter and will be back on 

September 25. 

Derek McCullough and his 

team at the community centre 

should be applauded for the 

initiative. 

Said McCullough: ‘‘There 

used to be a pizza bus here 

years ago and with the Sunday 

market only running from 

9.30am until 12.30pm we saw 

an opportunity to provide 

food in the late afternoon.’’ 

Site fees paid by the traders 

go back into the community 

centre, which is owned by the 

community.

Food truck venture proves to be a hit 


A FOOD truck alley initiative 

run through the Mt Pleasant 

Community Centre has proven 

popular, with plans to expand 

and refine it next season. 

To celebrate the end of a successful 

first round a final food 

truck alley will run on Queen’s 

Birthday (June 6) from 4-7pm, 

and the Pleasant Mountain Boys 

will be playing. 

The food trucks will return for 

a new season on September 25. 

A collection of up to a dozen 

food stalls have set up on Sunday 

afternoons in the centre car park 

since March 20 and tempted 

visitors with the likes of chicken, 

stacked burgers, waffles, Thai 

food, crepes, vegan burgers and 

real fruit ice cream. 

Community centre market 

manager Derek McCullough 

said the food alley had been run 

as a trial and as a Sunday dinner 

option for people passing by. 

‘‘There used to be a pizza bus 

here years ago and with the Sunday 

market only running from 

9.30am until 12.30pm we saw an 

opportunity to provide food in 

the late afternoon.’’ 

McCullough said the food 

venture had been very successful 

and had run from 4pm-8pm 

(more recently until 7pm because 

of the shorter days).

successful first season with one final offering before shutting up shop until September. 

There were plans to expand on 

the site next season, increase the 

range of what was on offer and to 

lay on regular musical entertainment, 

he said. 

Because it had been mostly 

takeaways, there had been a lot 

of used containers and plans 

were now afoot to recycle and 

mulch them, he said. 

The noise from food generators 

is also set to be addressed and an 

electricity hook up for traders is 

being investigated. 

McCullough said the location 

lent itself to family picnicking 

because it was right next to the 

reserve and playground.

farm at Goughs Bay was among 

areas hard hit by the heavy rain. 

Masefield, of Duvauchelle Bay, 

arrived the evening before the 

rain deepened and helped to get 

a bogged-down fencer back out 

when there was only one slip at 

that stage. 

“I thought we might get half a 

dozen slips or whatever, but the 

next morning all chaos broke 

loose.” 

The force of the rain dumped 

trees on beaches and river 

mouths, wrenched out bridges, 

culverts, power lines and fences. 

Rivers changed direction and 

large sections of roads were 

washed out with the worst-hit areas 

stripped of trees and left with 

extensive slumping and slips. 

Farmers woke up to new boulder 

rivers and when the waters 

subsided silt smothered hectares 

of land. 

Masefield said he stepped in 

because there was not much 

happening. 

“The next day I went on the 

farm track on the motorbike and 

got the sense that people didn’t 

realise how bad it was. 

“We got the council guy down 

to try and rattle some dags and 

with the power out we had to 

start organising generators, 

food and helicopter stuff in for 

people.” 

Some farmers were left without 

power for 10 days and remained 

isolated from washed-out roads. 

On the access road to Goughs 

Bay there were more than 30 slips 

and brown sludge was left on the 

lower flats by the coastline. 

“I would say two-thirds was 

under water and we shifted close 

to 5000 tonnes of silt over many 

weeks.” 

A big pile remains next to the 

woolshed and another heap is 

next to a patch of native bush, 

while many more hollows have 

been filled in. 

The area was clear of weeds 

beforehand, but gorse, willows 

and thistles have started rearing 

their heads in paddocks. 

He said they normally got 

1000mm of rain a year with some 

of the older farmers rating it as

Masefield said offers of help 

from the close community came 

pouring in and the Fulton Hogan

They have been working on 

the Goughs Bay road for about 

two months and probably will 

not be finished until the end of 

next month, while the Hickory 

Bay road is back in working 

condition. 

Federated Farmers North Canterbury 

president Caroline Amyes 

said Masefield took charge of 

the situation and his reporting 

and checking in on people was 

“just superb”. 

“The community really loved 

seeing and appreciated George 

for all his efforts. We heard it said 

time and time again how wonderful 

it was to see someone. Well 

done George – you are a true 

hero, a real natural with a clear 

love for your community.” 

Amyes also awarded Pam 

Richardson a Provincial Life 

Membership. 

She joined the Banks Peninsula 

branch in the early 1990s and 

went on to become provincial 

president from 2000 to 2004 and 

later received a Member of the 

New Zealand Order of Merit for 

services to conservation and 

the community.

Cottage repairs continue

In 2019, the board decided to 

restore the building at 40 Rue 

Jolie, and hold on to it, rather 

than sell the cottage after it was 

restored. 

Since then Yew Cottage has 

undergone repairs to reduce 

further deterioration of 

the building, although the 

floor is still vulnerable to 

flooding. 

Community board chair 

Tori Peden said Yew Cottage 

had proven a ‘‘ tricky 

one’’ for the board over the 

last three years. 

She said the cottage had 

historic value and dated back 

to 1877, but had undergone 

significant change over the years, 

particularly on the inside. 

Funding to lift the building 

above the flood levels and to 

restore it was allocated in the city 

council’s Long Term Plan 2021- 

2031. 

In the 2022/23 financial year 

there was $70,000 in the budget 

and $461,384 for the following 

year. 

‘‘Hopefully we can get 

this project completed in 

the next 18 months,’’ Peden 

said.

for Predator 

Free 2050 

recognition 


AKAROA AREA School is 

working with Pest Free Banks 

Peninsula to become a Predator 

Free 2050 school. 

Throughout the initiative, 

senior students will be assessed 

in unit standards for the use of 

a GPS unit, and for running a 

trapline within Akaroa. 

Junior students will also learn 

about biodiversity on Banks Peninsula 

and the wider vision of PFBP. 

The city council has given 

permission for activities to be 

carried out on council land, and 

PFBP will work with private 

land owners if a trap is placed 

on a road reserve outside their 

properties. 

Traps used include ‘T-Rex’ rat 

traps in wooden boxes, live cage 

traps, BT200 and a limited number 

of possum kill traps. 

PFBP will service all the live 

cage traps daily, as per the Animal 

Welfare Act, and will supervise

‘I’m going to miss my dream job’ 


PASSIONATE recreation and 

conservation advocate Suky 

Thompson is retiring from her 

role as manager of the Rod 

Donald Banks Peninsula Trust. 

Thompson started with the 

trust in 2011 and has been 

involved in developing walking 

track access, supporting 

biodiversity, partnering with 

landowners and mapping walks 

on Banks Peninsula. 

Hailing from the UK, she ran 

a small business conducting 

heritage tours in Akaroa and 

a consultancy specialising 

in Peninsula projects before 

deciding to study for a diploma 

in parks, recreation and 

tourism management at Lincoln 

University. 

While studying, she joined the 

Rod Donald Trust in its infancy. 

‘‘The trust has come such a 

long way since those early years 

when it had a good mandate but 

no real projects and that journey 

will continue after I’ve gone,’’ she 

said. 

Thompson’s first key job was 

to do a stock-take of groups 

and organisations involved in 

recreation and conservation, and 

soon a working partnership was 

formed with the Banks Peninsula 

Conservation Trust.

developing more recreational 

options for the community. 

Further discussions and open 

days led to the idea of linking 

tracks and expanding Te Ara 

Pātaka, the Summit Walkway. 

The trust was involved in 

marking the 35km track and 

some track work, Thompson 

said. 

‘‘Once that project was ticked 

off we decided there needed to 

be a hut on the track and a little 

property came up in 2014, which 

is now the Rod Donald Hut.’’ 

The trust also created the 

Banks Peninsula Walking 

Festival, which runs in 

November each year and offers 

a variety of guided walks across 

the entire peninsula area. 

Thompson said a spinoff of Te 

Ara Pātaka was the acquisition 

of land and the development of 

Te Ahu Pātiki, which includes 

the summits of Mt Herbert/ 

Te Ahu Pātiki and Mt Bradley, 

the two highest points in the 

Christchurch region. 

The trust had been blown away 

with public support and crowd 

funding that had enabled the 

purchase of land, and surplus 

funds were being used to develop 

the park further. 

Once again, partnerships had 

been formed with landowners, 

including Orton Bradley Park, 

and some amazing walking was 

now accessible to everyone, she 

said. 

“I’ve been on a wonderful, 

supportive journey with the Rod 

Donald Trust and I’m going to 

miss my dream job,’’ the longtime 

Robinson Bay resident said. 

A replacement is being sought 

for the 66-year-old, who is 

planning a trip to the UK and 

on her return will continue 

her involvement with Akaroa’s 

Garden of Tane.

VISITOR NUMBERS at 

Akaroa Museum continue 

to be well down on previous 

years. 

For the 10-month period to 

the end of April, 13,335 people 

visited the museum compared 

with more than 22,000 for the 

same period last year. 

In a recent report, museum 

director Lynda Wallace said 

there has been a boost in April 

numbers because of the school 

holidays, Easter and Anzac 

Day, but the visitor total for 

this year was set be a historic 

low. 

Covid restrictions, the 

closure of the borders to internationals, 

and Kiwis being 

cautious about travelling were 

the reasons for the low visitor 

numbers, she said. 

There had been a return of a 

small numbers of Australian 

visitors to Akaroa in April and 

as the borders opened, more 

people from other countries 

were expected to visit. 

Cruise ships returning to 

Akaroa and Lyttelton over the 

summer were also expected to 

boost numbers at the museum. 

The museum conducted its 

annual visitor survey in April 

and received positive feedback, 

Wallace said. 

‘‘All of the respondents reported 

that they were satisfied 

with their experience, and 

more than half rated their visit 

as extremely satisfying, the 

highest scoring option.’’ 

A new temporary exhibition, 

curated by collections manager 

Daniel Smith, opened on 

April 14 and is on view 

until October. 

Titled The View From Paris 

– Charles Meryon’s Pacific 

Etchings, it features a set of 

Charles Meryon prints recently 

acquired by the museum. 

While Meryon was in the 

Pacific (and Akaroa) with 

the French Navy in the early 

1840s, he made sketches 

of various subjects that he 

worked into etchings in the 

1860s when he was back 

in Paris.

The museum is also 

preparing for a collection 

management software 

upgrade, which will allow it

Treasures from the past: 

The Steamer Express 

LATE 19TH-century public 

transport out of Canterbury 

to the North Island was 

transformed when in 1895 the 

United Steam Ship Company 

introduced the first interisland 

ferry service, the Steamer 

Express, serviced by the 31-yearold 

steamer, Penguin (749 tons). 

Somewhat rough around the 

edges with regards to passenger 

comforts, the Steamer Express 

service between Lyttelton and 

Wellington, was nonetheless 

popular with business travellers 

and politicians alike, so much 

so that the USSCo replaced the 

Penguin with the much larger 

liner Rotomahana (1727 tons) 

just two years later. 

In 1899 she was joined by the 

Mararoa (2466 tons) and by 1905 

the Steamer Express became 

an all year round overnight 

interisland ferry service. 

Much maligned by the politicians 

of the day, who much 

preferred their creature comforts 

as well as a good night’s sleep, 

the USSCo finally commissioned 

a purpose-built ferry complete 

with all the then most modern 

conveniences – and in 1907 the 

Maori (3399 tons) was launched. 

Built by W. Denny & Bros. 

of Dumbarton, Scotland, the 

Crowd on ferry wharf c.1950s. 



Maori was 107m long, 14m in 

breadth with a 5m draught. She 

used coal-fired steam turbine 

propulsion for quiet running, 

with a bow rudder for astern 

berthing, and set a record time 

of 8hr 46min for the Wellington 

to Lyttelton run. 

Featuring a music room 

outfitted with grand piano and 

luxurious couches in gold and 

blue; and a majestic dining room 

with a grand wooden staircase, 

crimson upholstery, parquet 

floors and stained-glass dome; 

the Maori set the standard for all 

subsequent ferries of the Steamer 

Express. 

Equipped to handle 553 

passengers, there were still some 

improvements to be made in the 

passenger cabins with the then 

early 20th-century’s ‘modern 

comforts’ yet to include a shower, 

toilet or electric power sockets. 

The era of luxury interislander 

transport truly began when the 

Maori’s partner ferry Wahine 

(4436 tons) joined the interislander 

ferry service in 1913, 

replacing the ageing Mararoa. 

For another two decades these 

iconic vessels came to define the 

early 20th-century New Zealand 

way of life, although with some 

rough edges such as the USSCo 

‘shake-downs’ or collapsible 

beds that were brought out to 

accommodate extra economy 

class passengers. Or the large, 

male-only ‘Glory Hole’ cabins at 

the stern above the screws where 

one might perhaps bet on a bout 

of fisticuffs. 

The Maori sailed the Steamer 

Express route through World 

War 1 with the Mararoa returning 

to service while the Wahine 

served as a troopship and minelayer 

for the British Navy. 

After the war the Maori and 

Wahine were converted to oil 

burning boilers to run their 

steam turbines and resumed the 

ferry service until the Maori was 

retired in 1931. Taking her place 

was the Rangatira (6152 tons) 

which set a new record of 8hr 8m 

for the Lyttelton to Wellington 

run, and would go on to ply the 

route for another 34 years. 

However, the Maori was not 

done and returned to service for 

much of World War 2 while the 

Wahine and Rangatira ferried 

troops in the South Pacific 

theatre. 

The Maori was suddenly laid 

up in early 1944 in Wellington 

Harbour, and would never again 

sail the interislander route. 

Sold to a Chinese shipping 

company in 1946 she plied 

the passenger routes between 

Australasia and China until 

sunk in Shanghai port during a 

hurricane in 1951. 

Just two years later, the new 

Maori was launched (8303 tons) 

ushering in the fully modern era 

of the old Steamer Express.

aim to exceed the current altitude 

record for a student-led rocket 

programme held by the University 

of Southern California, which 

reached an altitude of 104km. 

“We’re very prepared this time, 

this wi l be the third attempt and 

we’ve got a l of the appropriate 

safety measures in place,” said 

project leader Jack Davies. 

He said a 400 litre-capacity 

water tanker wi l be on site while 

the Little River volunteer fire 

brigade wi l be alerted if required.

Kona N provides the grin factor 

THERE’S NO shortage of smallto-medium 

sport utility vehicles in 

today’s market. 

However, if you want something 

that definitely represents the sport 

in that description, then you’ll 

have to look hard. Sure, some of 

the premium brands have feisty 

wagons and SUVs, but they also 

have premium prices. 

Enter Hyundai’s Kona, it’s 

now part of the N programme 

of performance vehicles, and it 

is a brute in terms of looks and 

performance. 

It’s an interesting move from 

Hyundai, many Kona buyers are 

lured by its clean, green image. You 

can get Kona from fully electric 

to petrol in several forms. In total 

there are 10 Kona variants and 

given that, it’s become a popular 

model in the mid-size SUV 

segment. 

The Kona N is something 

else, though, and it sits on a par 

pricewise with the EV entry model 

at around $70K, but the two are 

chalk and cheese in terms of 

concept. 

Hyundai’s N series of cars, not be 

confused with the tamer N-line, are 

developed for speed, acceleration 

and handling, they are engineered 

through much development work 

at performance facilities such as 

South Korea’s Namyang research 

and development centre and fettled 

through many laps at Germany’s 

brutal Nürburgring race track. 

It was only weeks ago that I 

evaluated Hyundai’s stroppy i30N 

hatchback, a car that I delighted 

in with its power and handling, it 

is a car that constantly tantalises 

with its high boost turbocharged 

2-litre engine, and although it’s 

only a front-wheel-drive model 

it competes well with those great 

hot hatchbacks that are legendary 

in that segment. Well, the Kona 

N shares the same driveline as the 

i30N, even to the point where it 

drives out the front wheels only. 

Just like the i30N, the Kona N’s 

four-cylinder engine develops 

206kW and 392Nm, maximum 

power is realised comparatively low 

at just 5500rpm, although it will 

pull happily to almost 7000rpm, 

but it’s the area of maximum 

torque that is most interesting. 

It is realised all of the way from 

1950rpm to 5600rpm, which when 

you diagnose all of the figures there 

is a lot of mid-range pull that never 

wilts. 

Unlike the I30N, the Kona N 

doesn’t get a manual gearbox 

option. It shares the dual clutch 

system which you treat just like an 

automatic transmission, there are 

simply just two pedals – accelerator 

and brake. 

I like DCT gearboxes, they have 

quick, sharp shifts that in the Kona 

N’s case can be made manually by 

the gearshift lever itself or through 

steering wheel-mounted paddles. 

In terms of how all this gels 

is quite remarkable, the Kona N 

is a deliberate sports car and it 

has all the equipment to usher in 

and contain movement. Take the 

brakes, for example, they are huge 

and have friction compounds that

can take prolonged use. Hyundai 

even encourage track time in 

the Kona N, there are features 

to support that – an on-screen 

stopwatch and a shifting pattern 

that recognises dynamic driving, 

activating automatically by 

selecting the appropriate gear, and 

shift timing that provides optimal 

performance. 

One of the systems that is quite 

quirky is what Hyundai label 

N grin shift, it works alongside 

the standard N buttons which 

in themselves provide a turbo 

overboost function lifting power 

an extra 7kW. The NGS button 

releases maximum power of 

the engine and transmission for 

20sec, according to Hyundai, 

performance that is sure to bring 

a grin to the driver’s face. When 

the button is pushed, a countdown 

begins on the instrument cluster 

showing the remaining seconds. 

There is also a power shift 

feature, it engages when the car 

accelerates with more than 90 per 

cent of throttle, thereby mitigating 

any reduction in torque by using 

upshifts to deliver maximum 

power to the wheels. This initiates 

a type of push feel through the 

driveline. 

With all of these systems 

available there’s no doubt the Kona 

N becomes an exciting car to drive, 

it is truly a car that likes to have 

its freedom. It hunts at open road 

speed and it definitely wants to 

deliver. Of course, I had to drive 

within the legal requirements but

I can report it is an absolute blast 

getting to 100km/h, that time 

takes around 5.5sec. According 

to overseas reports it will also fly 

through a highway overtake – 

80-120km/h – in 3.5sec. On the 

subject of figures, Hyundai also 

claims a 240km/h top speed. 

For me, though, the Kona N was 

more about its handling prowess. 

Just like the i30N, the suspension 

has been engineered to deliver 

stable, controlled yet exciting 

cornering ability. 

Providing the grip in the first 

instance are wonderful Pirelli 

PZero tyres (235/40 x 19in), they 

steer beautifully and provide 

solid feedback. The Kona N’s fully 

independent suspension 

is electronically adjustable, 

depending on what drive mode 

is selected, but you can feel the 

dampers tighten and become 

firmer in N mode, the car squats 

and sits tidily in the rear as 

gravitational load shifts in a corner. 

I took the test car west and 

presented it with some of 

the trickiest corners on the 

Canterbury Plains, it fair blasts 

between corners and attacks 

the bends with precision and 

accuracy, turn-in is decisive and 

body balance uncannily stable for 

a vehicle that sits relatively high at 

well over 1.5m. 

If you also like the feel of 

pressure when the brakes are 

activated firmly, then they won’t 

disappoint, retardation is decisive. 

The Kona N is a true 

performance model and I guess 

that is why it commands a $69,990 

price tag. 

However, for that money you 

get a lot of kit – alcantara trim, 

electrically-adjustable and heated/ 

cooled front seats, heated steering 

wheel, satellite navigation, headup 

display, smart cruise control, 

keyless entry and ignition and a 

host of clever safety features. 

You are also getting many cars 

all in one package, it’s an SUV for 

sure, but it’s also a handy sports 

wagon. Money depending, I’d be 

very interested in the Kona N as I 

head towards retirement, it is a fun 

car and one that provides the grin 

factor that Hyundai is so keen to 

develop. 

Hyundai is also broadening 

the N concept, the Kona N 

sits alongside the desirable hot 

hatchback i30N, and it’s recently 

been joined by the i20N. I certainly 

hope I get to sample the latter.
