Dear Breeder,
Our 2012 roster reflects our commitment to top quality Australian bred horses that are
proven under our conditions at the elite level – Australian speed and toughness for
Australian conditions.
Substantial and widespread increases in prizemoney and breeders bonus schemes
across all levels of racing in Australia have guaranteed a bright future for our industry
and with the redevelopment of Royal Randwick it promises to revitalize our industry. I
believe there has never been a better time to be involved in breeding thoroughbreds and
our selection of proven and promising young sires offer you an opportunity to breed for
the sale ring or racetrack.
Golden Slipper winner Stratum embodies our philosophy in stallion selection and has
justified our faith in him at every turn. Champion First and Second Season Sire as well
as Champion Sire of Two Year Olds in 2009/2010, Stratum has sired 11 stakes-winners
from his first three crops led by Group I ATC Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily and
Group I ATC Australian Oaks and Flight Stakes winner Streama.
Snippetson is widely regarded as Australia’s best value sire with seven new stakes
horses in the last six months and his progeny are described by trainers as “they’re
tough, good looking and can run”. His stakewinners include Fast Clip, That’s The One
and Nobby Snip.
Set to follow in the footsteps of Stratum are Sebring and Northern Meteor, whose first
progeny sold at the yearling sales this year providing a fantastic return for our many
loyal clients. The progeny of Golden Slipper winner Sebring were snapped up by all the
best judges with 49 of his offspring selling for $100,000 or more with the top seller being
a colt from Valda Merceda that made $450,000 at Magic Millions. There was also great
interest from buyers for record breaking Group I winning sprinter Northern Meteor, who
had 27 yearlings sell for upwards of $100,000 with the highest priced being a colt from
Listen Here that made $440,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Our other young stallions Nicconi, Dreamscape, Star Witness and Tickets are all
progressing through the early stages of their stud careers with Nicconi and Dreamscape
set to have yearlings at the sales in 2013 and Star Witness and Tickets will have their
first foals on the ground this spring.
For those wishing to base their mares at Widden for the season we offer competitive
rates for short and long term agistment on some of the finest horse country in the world
and our helpful and friendly staff are always available to assist with any and all enquries.
Whether it be mating advice, sales planning for the future or acquisition of new stock,
we are there to offer advice and make things happen for you – seven days a week.
Golden Slipper winner, & Champion 2yo Sire STRATUM
is the best & most successful son of Redoute’s Choice.
Having sired a Golden Slipper winner in his first crop and
an Australian Oaks winner in his second crop, Stratum is
clearly one of Australia’a most exciting young sires.
Stratum’s Champion 2yo and Golden Slipper hero
CRYSTAL LILY highlights the success of the emerging
cross with Snippets mares. CRYSTAL LILY and the
Champion Black Caviar both carry a duplication of Vain
and this fantastic speed influence is worth replicating as is
Luskin Star
Out of a Luskin Star mare, Stratum is ideally-bred to cross
with mares from the Sir Tristram line and has sired dual
Gr1 winner STREAMA out of a mare by Sire Tristram’s son
SOVEREIGN RED.
From a Star Kingdom line mare, Stratum is likely to
work when crossed back over that line. Sources include
Biscay through Bletchingly, Canny Lad, Hurricane
Sky; and Marscay (the dam sire of Stratum’s Debutante
Stakes winner ERAMOR). Mares from the Hail To
Reason sireline such as daughters of Red Ransom, More
Than Ready & At Talaq (ECLAIR MYSTIC) are well
suited. Stratum appears to be crossing well with Crown
Jester through Rory’s Jester (SPECTROLITE), and
Century through Centaine, Rubiton and Zeditave.
Stratum is from the Northern Dancer line, but he will
be in the fifth generation of Stratum’s foals, and will cross well
over Northern Dancer through Nijinsky II; Nureyev;
Try My Best and son Last Tycoon (linebreeding to the
family of Redoute’s Choice), mares by Scenic and his son
Blevic (PELLIZOTTI). Also the Deputy Minister strain
of Northern Dancer, Group winning RUNNING TALL’s
dam is from this sireline.
Redoute’s Choice is the sire of the outstanding mare
Miss Finland, out of a mare by Woodman, a son of Mr.
Prospector. Other good Mr. Prospector sources include,
Gone West, Seeking the Gold, Machiavellian,
(Umatilla and Xaar inbreeding to the family of Redoute’s
Choice).
Champion 2yo and Golden Slipper hero Sebring, is one of the most
exciting stallion prospects in Australia. By Champion Sire of 2yo’s More
Than Ready, from the family of Golden Slipper winner Baguette.
More Than Ready has enjoyed success over mares from a wide range
of sire lines but his results with Northern Dancer are remarkable.
Sebring should be suited by Northern Dancer through Nijinsky
II (including Royal Academy), Storm Bird (including Storm Cat
and Bluebird), Be My Guest, Sadler’s Wells (including Scenic),
Last Tycoon, Palace Music and Night Shift (brother to the third
dam of Flying Spur). He would be intriguing with mares by Encosta
De Lago (duplicating Rolls), also other branches of Danzig, including
Grand Lodge and Anabaa.
More Than Ready has a strong record with Mr. Prospector line
mares through Miswaki (including Umatilla), Thunder Gulch,
Elusive Quality, Seeking the Gold (via Secret Savings the
broodmare sire of SAMAREADY), Street Cry, Unbridled’s
Song, Defensive Play and Bellotto.
Sir Ivor is a good combination for Halo, Kaapstad, Marauding
and Zabeel would be sources worth pursuing. More Than Ready has
a good strike rate with mares descending from Star Kingdom.
Sebring is out of a mare by Danehill’s Golden Slipper winning son
Flying Spur, and inbreeding Northern Dancer, has enjoyed phenomenal
success, also inbreeding to Danzig is succeeding with ever increasing
frequency. Breeding Sebring back over mares by sons of Danehill
such as Danzero, Redoute’s Choice and Catbird – who echo
the Danehill/Star Kingdom cross in the dam of Sebring should
do well. Mares bred on the Danehill/Mr. Prospector cross should
also be successful.
Sebring’s great-grand dam is by Better Boy, and Halo/Better Boy
has been successful, this could be reinforced through Century, by
Better Boy. Century is also a three-quarters relative to Willowy (the
third dam of Sebring), and could be brought in through Centaine
and Rubiton. We also recommend Sebring with mares by Rory’s
Jester, bringing together the three-parts-brother and sister, Far Vista
and Baguette.
A record-breaking Group One winner, Northern Meteor
is by Champion Sire Encosta de Lago, from the family of
Champion Sires Sadler’s Wells, Nureyev, Fairy King (sire of
Encosta de Lago) and Stormy Atlantic.
Encosta de Lago has enjoyed tremendous success with mares
descending from Sir Tristram, siring stakes winners from
daughters of Zabeel (who brings in Nureyev, from Northern
Metetor’s own family, and is the sire of Octagonal and his
son Lonhro), Sovereign Red, and Marauding.
Encosta de Lago has also enjoyed success with mares
descending from that other great domestic strain, Star
Kingdom, through Bletchingly (including Group One
winners out of mares by Canny Lad and Kenny’s Best
Pal) and Marscay.
Although he is a Northern Dancer line sire, Encosta de
Lago has enjoyed success when crossed back over mares from
that sire line. Broodmare sires that have enjoyed success under
Encosta de Lago include Last Tycoon, Alzao, Be My
Guest, and Caerleon (by Nijinsky II).
Northern Meteor is a half-brother to the talented Queen
of the Hill (by Danehill) and the Dam of Smart Missile (by
Fastnet Rock). Encosta de Lago has already sired twelve
stakes winners out of mares from the Danehill line, and looks
particularly interesting with mares by Flying Spur (One of
Northern Meteor’s highest priced first crop yearlings in 2012
($420,000) was from a Flying Spur mare.) It could also be
worth considering bringing in Danzig through Anabaa,
Perugino (three-parts-brother to Fairy King, and sire of
Testa Rossa) and Green Desert.
Northern Meteor is out of a mare by Fappiano, an
outstanding son of Mr. Prospector, and it may pay to try
Northern Meteor back over Mr. Prospector line mares. The
Listen Here colt that sold for $440,00 is bred this way being
out of an Elusive Quality mare. Encosta de Lago already has
stakes winners out of mares descending from Mr. Prospector
through Belloto, Thunder Gulch, Umatilla, Defensive
Play and Unbridled’s Song (which would give inbreeding
to Fappiano). Jade Robbery and Geiger Counter would
both give inbreeding to the Rough Shod II family.
Encosta de Lago has a stakes winner out of a Don’t Say
Halo mare (by Halo, and brings in Never Bend, who is
excellent with Fairy King). Northern Meteor should also be
very good with Halo, through More Than Ready.
Thatching is by Thatch, a close relative to both the
granddam of Fairy King, and the granddam of Northern
Meteor and suitable sources include Archway, Rustic
Amber (and his son Sequalo).
Star Witness firmly established himself as one of the fastest
horses of his generation. Winner of his first three starts
at two, including a brilliant win in the Blue Diamond
Stakes, he added the sire-making Ascot Vale Stakes at three.
From the first crop of World Champion Starcraft, Star
Witness is out of Leone Chiara, a group stakes winning
granddaughter of Danehill, who is herself a sister to two
other group winners.
Star Witness is from the Nureyev male line, via classic
winner, and Champion Sprinter Soviet Star, but his pedigree
suggests that he may forge his own course rather than
merely reflecting his sire line.
Star Witness is inbred to Northern Dancer, and is free
of Mr. Prospector, a reverse cross to Northern Dancer,
and an excellent foil for that strain. Among possible sources
of Mr Prospector that would suit here are the likes of
Elusive Quality, Zafonic and his son Xaar, Geiger
Counter and Jade Robbery (giving linebreeding to the
Thong family), Machiavellian (through Street Cry and
Vettori), Thunder Gulch,Woodman, Kingmambo,
El Moxie, Miswaki (through Umatilla), Seeking the
Gold (sire of Secret Savings and Lujain), Bellotto and
Unbridled’s Song.
The cross of Star Witness over mares descending from
Sir Tristram, appears to have good potential. Particularly
interesting for Star Witness are mares by Zabeel, Kaapstad,
and Octagonal (sire of Lonhro), who give a strong
reinforcement of the pedigree of Soviet Star.
Star Witness has three crosses of Northern Dancer,
but those strains will be in the fifth and sixth generations
of his foals, and Star Witness may well emulate his sire and
grandsire by crossing well over Northern Dancer line mares.
Obvious targets will include the three-parts-brothers to
Star Witness’s male-line ancestor Nureyev, Sadler’s Wells,
Fairy King and Perugino (all, like Nureyev, from the
powerful family of Rough Shod II/Thong). Sadler’s
Wells sources include Galileo, Montjeu, Barathea
and Scenic. Fairy King can be introduced through his
Champion Sire son Encosta de Lago.
The Nijinsky II strain also looks to have merit with
Star Witness and could be introduced through Royal
Academy; Yeats (a close relative to Nureyev); Caerleon
(sire of Generous, Alquoz, Bletchley Park and Tenby),
Tights, Western Symphony and Kala Dancer.
Star Witness does carry Danehill, but that strain will
be back in the fourth generation of his foals and coming
via his dam. A duplication of Danehill could be particularly
interesting, especially through mares by Redoute’s Choice
(a genetic relative to the dam of Star Witness), also through
Flying Spur, Danehill Dancer (sire of Choisir),
Commands and Danewin.
An outstanding sprinter, Nicconi gained group one
victories in The Galaxy and the Lightning Stakes in
brilliant fashion. He is by a beautifully-bred Champion
Sprinting son of Danzig, out of a multiple group one
producing mare.
Nicconi’s sire, Bianconi, has sired the group one winning
Above Deck out of a mare by At Talaq, and group two
winner Schilling, out of a mare by Prized, both from
the Roberto line. This suggests trying mares by Red
Ransom (his sons), and Brocco. This is a branch of the
Hail to Reason/Turn-to line. The Halo branch of
Hail to Reason has also enjoyed success under Danzig,
and could be sourced via Don’t Say Halo, Fuji Kiseki
and More Than Ready. The Danzig cross with mares
descending from Sir Tristram (a grandson of Turnto)
has done well, and Bianconi is the sire of group
two winner Mr Martini out of a mare by Sir Tristram
son, Marauding. Sir Tristram might also be brought in
through Military Plume (from the same, Froth, family
as Nicconi), El Qahira, Grosvenor, Kaapstad, and
Zabeel (his son, Octagonal and grandson, Lonhro).
From the Mr. Prospector line, Bianconi has stakes
winners out of mares by Woodman. Mr. Prospector
might be introduced through Geiger Counter and
Jade Robbery (doubling the Thong family), Miswaki
(including Umatilla), Thunder Gulch, Elusive
Quality, Seeking the Gold (via Secret Savings and
Lujain) and Street Cry.
Bianconi has been quick to establish an affinity for mares
from some branches of his own Northern Dancer
sire line. In particular Nijinsky II, who might also
be good here through Royal Academy, Whiskey
Road, Bletchley Park, Last Tycoon and Western
Symphony.
Crossing Bianconi with mares by Encosta de Lago
or Falbrav and Helissio, would give inbreeding to
the brothers Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King. Inbreeding to
Sadler’s Wells and his three-parts-brother Nureyev,
might be achieved through mares by Peintre Celebre,
Spinning World and Stravinsky. In addition to
doubling the Thong family through Yeats, Nureyev
and Fairy King, we can duplicate this female line via
Thatch, who can be found through Archway, Rustic
Amber and Sequalo.
Bianconi is out of the great race mare and producer Fall
Aspen which I would recommend duplicating. As Nicconi’s
broodmare sire, Scenic, comes from the great family of
Where You Lead, and she can be introduced through
Rainbow Quest. Finally, mares by former Widden Stud
stallion General Nediym hold particular interest as he is
from the same female line as Nicconi.
The handsome Snippetson has established himself as a consistent sire of
winners & stakes horses, widely regarded as being a top value sire capable
of siring good looking, tough stock that perform over all conditions.
Crossing Snippetson back over mares from his own broodmare sire
line of Danzig is working extremely well, particularly Danehill and
sons (already produced Stakes winners MISS UPSTART ex Danzero,
THAT’S THE ONE ex Redoute’s Choice, & Stakes performers KID
KOBE ex Danewin, DANSONATE ex Commands, KENJORWOOD
ex Flying Spur); Chief’s Crown; and Pine Bluff (broodmare sire of
multiple stakes winning, Gr1 performer NOBBY SNIP and also a Group
One winner by Snippetson’s full brother Snowland in ABSOLUT GLAM).
Snippets over Northern Dancer line mares have produced more than
a third of Snippets’ stakes winners. Snippetson has two Northern Dancer
strains but they will be 5 x 5 in his foals, so further Northern Dancer
can work. Particularly Nureyev (Nureyev’s son Spinning World has
worked with Snippetson with group performers MISTER MILTON &
SNIP N DUCK), and his three-parts-brothers Sadler’s Wells (sire of
Scenic, Barathea, Galileo, Montjeu and Carnegie), Fairy King
(sire of Encosta de Lago) and Perugino all give linebreeding to the
famous Rough Shod II family.
Snippets has also crossed successfully through Nijinsky II (who
could be introduced through Western Symphony, Royal Academy,
Whiskey Road.) Try My Best (through Last Tycoon); Lyphard;
Storm Bird (particularly through Bluebird and Storm Cat).
Another good cross for Snippets is with mares from the Star Kingdom
line. They include Biscay, through Marscay and Bletchingly; Kaoru
Star through Luskin Star, Zephyr Bay and Canny Lad, who gives
well placed inbreeding to Lunchtime.
The In Reality sireline worked with Snippetson providing Group
winner FAST CLIP, look for mares by Honour And Glory and Valid
Appeal.
Others to look for are Red Ransom, Quest For Fame (Dam sire of
stakes performing 2yo ANYTHINGTHATMOVES), Gilded Time,
Crown Jester/Rory’s Jester and Zeditave.
SNIPPETSON - DANZIG-DANEHILL...
a great cross!
Tickets is by two-time Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice, now making
an impact as a sire of sires with ten stakes siring sons, including Stratum,
Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt.
Tickets is out of a six-times stakes winning mare Staging, and is threeparts-brother
to group one winning two year-old Excites, and halfbrother
to group one winning sprinter Duporth. Tickets’ half-brother,
Duporth, is a son of Red Ransom (by Roberto), and Tickets should
also be suited by daughters and granddaughters of Red Ransom. Sons,
such as Sri Pekan, Intikhab, Charge Forward, and Domesday,
with mares by the latter two being of particular interest.
Roberto is a son of Hail to Reason, and there are group one
winners by Redoute’s Choice out of mares descending from this line
through Sound Reason, and Halo (out of a mare by Don’t Say
Halo). The Halo branch might also be introduced through More
Than Ready and Sunday Silence (available in Australia through
Fuji Kiseki, Genuine and Tayasu Tsuyoshi).
From the male line Turn-to (sire of Hail to Reason), through Sir
Tristram, Redoute’s Choice has sire 18 stakes winners. Representatives
of Sir Tristram that have worked here, include Zabeel (& grandson
Lonhro), Sovereign Red, Dr. Grace, Military Plume, Grosvenor
and Marauding.
The cross of Redoute’s Choice and his sons over mares from the Mr.
Prospector line has been a productive one, and successful sources
include Woodman, Kingmambo, Thunder Gulch (who gives the
genetic relatives Storm Bird and Nijinsky II), Seeking the Gold (sire
of Secret Savings), and Geiger Counter. Other worthwhile sources
of Mr. Prospector include Gone West (particularly good through
Elusive Quality, and Zafonic – both giving the genetic relatives
Nijinsky II and The Minstrel – and Zafonic’s son Xaar – from
Redoute’s Choice’s own family), Machiavellian (through Street
Cry and Vettori), Distorted Humor and Unbridled’s Song.
Even though Redoute’s Choice is a Northern Dancer line horse, he
has done well over Northern Dancer line mares. He has two stakes
winners out of a daughter and grand daughter of El Gran Senor and
six stakes winners out of mares by Last Tycoon. Tickets has a double
of Nijinsky II a strain that has done well under Redoute’s Choice,
and this is far enough back that a third cross should compliment. Good
sources include Royal Academy. Other Northern Dancer strains
that are proven under Redoute’s Choice include Encosta de Lago
and Dehere. One might also consider mares by Spinning World.
Redoute’s Choice is the sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by
Bluebird, who is by Storm Bird, a genetic relative to Nijinsky II.
That strain could also be brought in through Storm Cat sons, such as
Hennessy, Tale of the Cat, and Giant’s Causeway.
Other strains that might be considered include Star Way; Snippets
and Bletchingly - particularly through Hurricane Sky, Brave Warrior
and his son Show a Heart; and Blushing Groom, through Rainbow
Quest/Quest For Fame.
A Champion Miler by Danehill & Champion
2yo sire, out of a three-parts-sister to Might and
Power, Lucky Owners is a horse with an intriguing
pedigree. He is out of a mare who is from the
immediate family of Sir Tristram, and who is
linebred to both the female line of Sir Tristram and
Round Table.
Lucky Owners has established himself a sire of
top class horses of the ilk of Champion NZ 2yo
The Heckler and Gr 2 winning, Group 1 paced
MASQUERADER. The likes of group winner THE
HOMBRE, Gr 1 performer LUCKY THUNDER,
Stakes placed LUCKY KENTUCKY and the
talented stakes performer LUCKY EIGHTY EIGHT
(ex Jeune).
The HECKLER is out of a mare by Rory’s
Jester (by Crown Jester), with a second dam
by Without Fear (bringing in a third cross of
Round Table). Masquerader, Lucky Thunder and
Lucky Kentucky are products of the very successful
Danehill/Mr. Prospector cross, being out of
mares by Geiger Counter, Thunder Gulch and
Woodman. Mares by this sire line appear to be
extremely well suited.
Out of a mare by Sir Tristram’s son, Kaapstad,
Lucky Owners should cross very well back over Sir
Tristram line mares. Particularly interesting sources
include Zabeel, Octagonal (a three-parts-brother
to Kaapstad, and giving inbreeding to Eight
Carat) and Sovereign Red, as well as Military
Plume, Marauding, Grosvernor and Dr. Grace.
Other domestic strains that have worked well
under Danehill are Century through Centaine
and Rubiton; Zeditave and Vain.
Combining Danehill and Sir Tristram, Lucky
Owners should cross particularly well over mares
from the Star Kingdom line. This includes mares
descending from Biscay (through Bletchingly
and his sons Canny Lad, Best Western and
Star Watch, and grandsons Kingdom Bay and
Hurricane Sky; and through Marscay) and
Kaoru Star (through Luskin Star and his son
Covetous).
Even though Danehill is a Northern Dancer
line horse, he and his sons have worked well back over
certain branches of that line, including Nijinsky II
(through Caerleon, Royal Academy, Whiskey
Road, Niniski and Kahyasi); Nureyev; Try My
Best and his son Last Tycoon; Sadler’s Wells and
his brother, Fairy King; and Night Shift.
Progeny
A multiple stakes winning sprinter from a powerful branch of the
Danehill sire line, Dreamscape is from the immediate family of
Sadler’s Wells, Nureyev and Fairy King (sire of Encosta de Lago).
This is also the family of Widden barn mate, Group 1 winning, track
record holder Northern Meteor.
We can note that Dreamscape’s grandam, Handsewn, is half-sister
to champion Thatch, and that Dreamscape’s sire, Choisir, has already
sired a Group 2 winner Stimulation out of a mare by Thatching
(by Thatch), and a stakes winner Sara’s Choice out of mare by
Thatching’s son, Puissance.
Danehill line stallions have enjoyed considerable success with mares
descending from Sadler’s Wells (from the same sire line and female line as
the dam of Dreamscape). Among sons of Sadler’s Wells are Scenic (sire
of Blevic), Galileo, Montjeu, High Chaparral, Barathea (who
looks particularly good), Carnegie, and King of Kings (another
particularly good fit on pedigree). Singspiel is a grandson of Sadler’s
Wells who could work here. Fairy King the brother to Sadler’s
Wells is sire of Encosta de Lago and Helissio.
Although he is a Northern Dancer line stallion, Choisir has done
well when bred back over a number of branches of the Northern
Dancer line. He has sired Group winner Hurried Choice out of
a mare by Catrail, by Storm Cat, which suggests trying other sons
of that horse, such as Hennessy, Tale of the Cat and Giant’s
Causeway. Storm Bird, the sire of Storm Cat might be good here
through Bluebird. He also has stakes winners out of mares by Alzao
and Night Shift. In addition, Choisir has already sired a Group winner
(Psychologist) out of a mare by Danzero, from his own Danehill
line.
Like many Danehill line stallions Choisir has met with success when
crossed with the sire line of Sir Tristram (Sacred Choice), including
through Zabeel (Champagne Harmony) (bringing in Nureyev).
Other sources of Sir Tristram include Zabeel’s grand-son Lonhro.
Out of mares from the Star Kingdom line, Choisir has stakes
winners descending from Bletchingly, out of daughters of Star
Watch and Hurricane Sky, and from Noholme, through Made of
Gold (Starspangledbanner).
