“I always read books about animals, I wanted to live <strong>in</strong> harmony<br />
with and always be close to <strong>the</strong> animal world.” Says Ir<strong>in</strong>a<br />

whose ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest is <strong>in</strong><br />
depict<strong>in</strong>g animals. She<br />
works with water colours<br />
and soft pastels.<br />
Ir<strong>in</strong>a did not tra<strong>in</strong> to become a<br />
professional artist. Her profession<br />
was an eng<strong>in</strong>eer of <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />
build<strong>in</strong>gs and structures. She had<br />
worked as a civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer for many<br />
years. But her love for animals and<br />
f<strong>in</strong>e arts has gradually evolved <strong>in</strong>to a<br />
profession.<br />
She pa<strong>in</strong>ts portraits of dogs and<br />
cats, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those for professional<br />
experts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of cynology as<br />
well as for well-known breeders. Her<br />
works are <strong>in</strong> many countries of <strong>the</strong><br />
world.<br />
The ma<strong>in</strong> material she uses is soft<br />
pastels because mastery of water<br />
colors eluded her for some time.<br />
Work<strong>in</strong>g with oils at home, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
absence of a dedicated studio, is<br />
impractical and so she took up soft<br />
pastels.<br />
“All that you see is my own<br />
technique of depict<strong>in</strong>g animals.<br />
I have never taken courses for<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g with soft pastels. I attended<br />
numerous master classes and<br />
tutorials which allowed me to tame<br />
water colors and beg<strong>in</strong> to work <strong>in</strong> my<br />
own au<strong>the</strong>ntic style and manner”<br />
The dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g feature of<br />
portraits drawn by Ira Kukrusova is <strong>in</strong><br />
captur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> exact likeness. Every<br />
time she pa<strong>in</strong>ts it is not merely an<br />
abstract representation of a breed,<br />
not just a generic tiger or any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
