The ice cover

The Antarctic ice cap or indlandsis is one of the two polar ice

caps (or polar caps) on Earth. It covers about 98% of the

Antarctic continent and is the largest single mass of ice on

Earth, with at least 14 million km 3 , and contains 30 million

km³ of ice. It accounts for more than 90% of the total volume

of the Earth's glacial ice, compared to the 8% represented

by the Greenland ice sheet in the northern hemisphere. This

Antarctic ice sheet reaches thicknesses greater than 4 km,

being located bedrock at some points about 2 km below sea

level.
