Iconic 91 kilometre path to link Sydney and Parramatta
A
game-changing 91 kilometre continuous
pathway linking the Sydney
Opera House to Parramatta Park will
be built as part of a $60 million NSW Government
investment.
Funding for key stages of the project,
including design and feasibility studies,
was confirmed in the State Budget, set to be
officially handed down today.
Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and
Active Transport Rob Stokes said the
Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link would
be one of Sydney’s longest and most crucial
active transport connections.
HOUSE TO THE PARK
The full walk will encompass some 18
different suburbs.
“Since 1811 our city’s prosperity has been
propelled by road and rail connections
between the settlements of Sydney and
Parramatta. This new connection will allow
walking and cycling trips to proliferate,
making lives easier, healthier and more
enjoyable for locals, commuters and visitors
for centuries to come,” Mr Stokes said.
The announcement was one of many made
as part of the lead-up to Budget day.
Community News Update
Message from Mayor Lake
Council is in the midst of refugee week and I have been
busy attending events to celebrate the occasion. This
year’s theme is ‘Healing’ which hopes to promote
harmony and togetherness by encouraging individuals,
communities and organisations to connect. This important
week raises awareness of issues affecting refugees by
highlighting their experiences to the broader community
to help foster relationships and understanding.
I am delighted to let everyone know that Council’s
Deputy General Manager and Director Community
and Organisation Development, Melissa Attia, has
been awarded the prestigious Public Service
Medal Award. This Award recognises outstanding
service of public sector employees. Receiving a
PSM is an honour, with only 100 recipients
awarded nationally each year. Melissa was
nominated for her outstanding service to the
Council during the COVID-19 Pandemic for her
work in assisting residents. Congratulations
Melissa on this significant achievement.
I had the pleasure of attending Lidcombe@Night – Wyatt Park activation
over the weekend. The event featured an open-air cinema, community
stallholders and sporting organisations. After months of community
consultations, the event was a great opportunity to see the recent
upgrades at Wyatt Park. It was a valuable opportunity to interact with
residents, engage with local stakeholders and sporting groups.
Did you know that you can still use your NSW Government Dine and
Discover vouchers at restaurants and businesses within Cumberland?
According to data only 30% of residents have taken advantage of this
offer, meaning there are still hundreds of vouchers that will go unused.
I’d encourage you to take your family out for a meal at one of our
restaurants in our town centres or catch a movie in Auburn. These
vouchers can be used at most eateries in the LGA, as well as at
cinemas and recreation venues. Vouchers expire on Thursday 30 June.
senior services and assistance programs, health and wellness programs,
a Zumba presentation and more. One session will be delivered in
Mandarin on Monday 27 June at the Berala Community Centre, and
the session in Arabic will be held on Thursday 30 June at Guildford
Community Centre. For more information visit the website
forum is an opportunity to hear from a diverse range of speakers and
panelists on the support and services in the sector. It will also be a good
opportunity to engage, reflect and discuss the impacts and challenges in
the sector. Registration is essential, visit the website to book your place
“It shatters them”:
Stories in spotlight
LOCAL NEWS
ELLIE BUSBY
This Refugee Week, Simon Shahin
wants Australians to understand that
becoming a refugee is “not a choice.”
Held annually, Refugee Week aims to create
better understanding between different
communities and encourage successful integration,
enabling refugees to live in safety and
to continue making a valuable contribution to
Australia.
Speaking at Merrylands Library on
Wednesday, June 22, Mr Shahin will share the
amazing story of how he and his family fled
from war torn Syria before finally settling and
starting a new life in Australia.
“I was born and raised in Damascus, Syria,
one of the most ancient cities in the world.
I was studying environmental science at
Damascus University and I had a great
upbringing – I enjoyed my life,” he said.
“But unfortunately around 2011, circumstances
changed. War ensued and swept
over the whole country. My family and I were
forced to flee and seek asylum.”
Mr Shahin and his family were granted
temporary asylum in Lebanon and from
there they sought refugee visas for Australia.
In 2015, they were finally granted these visas
and at 22-years-old, Mr Shahin made his new
home in Australia.
Although he was excited for the fresh start
in western Sydney, the now 29-year-old Mr
Shahin soon realised that adjusting to life in a
new country wouldn’t be easy.
“I had a lot of challenges initially with the
language barrier, finding what to do professionally
and also belonging, finding friends. I
was just starting from scratch,” he said.
“But with some perseverance, and good
luck, I managed to complete my studies
in renewable energy engineering and I’m
currently working at Transgrid.”
Now he has made it his mission to help other
refugees and educate Australians on the
struggles they face.
“There are a lot of refugees who have been
going through such traumas after fleeing
their countries, it’s not as easy as it sounds.
Many people have no choice,” Mr Shahin said.
“To leave their home, a country they’ve been
raised in all their life, is a very hard thing [to
do]. It shatters them.”
This Refugee Week, Mr Shahin hopes people
will learn more about the issues refugees face.
“I would appeal to all locals just to learn
more about the issues [affecting refugees],” he
said.
“They need to educate and empathise with
them, we are all living on the same planet and
if we don’t find a way to live in peace with one
another then we become disconnected.”
Refugee Week runs until Saturday, June 25.
To hear Mr Shahin speak, contact Merrylands
Library on 8757 9065.
Proposed walk will link our proud
history with an exciting future
On Saturday, I ventured to see a friend in
Ermington via the track along the Parramatta
River.
Cycling was not an option due to a flat tyre.
Jogging was the intention, along with a vague
goal to train for the City2Surf. But for the most
part, I settled into a brisk walk.
It was a brilliant sunny day. Plants and bushes
were sprouting in all directions. Everywhere
was lush and green from this year’s rains.
The path into dense foliage was like a fascinating
novel, twisting and turning, luring me
in.
I’m a fan of long city walks. Last year, I was
part of a group that trekked from Coogee to
Watson’s Bay, encountering delightful gullies
and pathways behind Dover Heights that
I never knew existed. Some of us returned a
few weeks later to complete subsequent expeditions
between Watson’s Bay and The Rocks;
then onto Balmoral and Manly.
Along our local river at the weekend, there
were no dramatic topographical changes.
No stunning harbour vistas, panoramic
views of Bondi or shivers while tiptoeing
through Waverley Cemetery.
Tourists weren’t stopping every few metres.
Locals in sensible shoes were the only company,
along with the odd middle-aged cyclist
whizzing past in lycra.
But there was grandeur in the quiet. A sense
News...........................................................1-15
Business......................................................16
Life & Style...........................................17-18
of history, pacing past the iron lattice Gasworks
Bridge, once the site of an old mill
and gas station, and further along, the utility
bridge at Camellia.
I felt I was travelling back through the ages,
spying on the original Indigenous inhabitants
during eel-catching season.
Back when the potential of what became
known as Parramatta so fascinated the early
settlers, gazing inland from Sydney Cove.
And the transportation corridors linking the
colony to fertile farming and industrial lands
were so vital to its success.
The Parramatta River may not be Sydney’s
gleaming jewel, its shimmering surf. Invariably
murky, often placid, its tides bring balance.
They hint at socio-economic fault lines.
They provide the city’s centre of gravity. Its
eternity and its endurance.
Now the plan to establish an unbroken
foreshore walkway through 18 suburbs from
Parramatta to the Opera House will bring the
sullen beauty and enigma of the river to new
generations.
The idea is being adopted and funds committed
by the NSW government in this week’s
state budget.
However, it was first popularised by the
McKell Institute, which proposed it as a “marquee”
post-pandemic infrastructure initiative
in September 2020.
Entertainment................................19-28
Auto...............................................................29
Business Directory.....................30-31
It is estimated that only 22 kilometres – or
roughly one-quarter of the foreshore – is currently
accessible by foot.
If the government follows the McKell Institute’s
proposal, it will deliver the walkway in
stages, building on existing trails and public
space.
Firstly, plotting a path around Blackwattle
and Rozelle Bays, in conjunction with reopening
Glebe Island Bridge.
Further works will include a 10-kilometre
foreshore loop around Canada Bay and onto
Homebush Bay.
Then, heading back east, linking Abbotsford
with the Iron Cove Bridge and start of the legendary
Bay Run.
Expensive waterfront properties, particularly
those wrapping around Balmain, will prove
tricky to navigate. It is also reported that the
government will require co-funding from developers
earning riches as they reshape the
entire backdrop.
Few of us in Parramatta will entertain starting
before dawn only to stagger onto the Opera
House steps by midnight.
But our river will become home to one of the
city’s most absorbing walks. Ringed by rapidly
growing residential areas, a place to channel
Sydney’s intrepid past and the centuries to
come.
See you next week.
LOCAL NEWS
Cheryl’s special OAM honour is
one for the local history books
ELLIE BUSBY
Cheryl Bates speaking with Parra News journalist Ellie Busby. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
Cheryl Bates, branch president of
Parramatta’s National Trust of
Australia (NSW), has been awarded a
Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her
service to community history preservation.
When Ms Bates found out she was nominated
for an OAM, she was surprised to say
the least.
“It was really unexpected but I was delighted
to receive it,” she said.
“I’ve just been working towards saving heritage
and having it protected, so it’s not just all
about saving a building it’s about having it in a
context and setting that presents it correctly.”
From her early days studying to be a registered
nurse at Sydney Hospital to becoming
Parramatta’s National Trust of Australia
(NSW)’s branch president, preserving history
has always been something of a passion for
Ms Bates.
“When I look back on it I’ve always chosen
things throughout my life that have heritage
in it. I did my nurses training at Sydney Hospital,
that’s the oldest hospital in Australia, and
I lived in an 1858 building on site,” she said.
Despite being a city steeped in history,
Parramatta’s heritage has taken a hit the last
few years with the deconstruction of iconic
buildings like Willow Grove. It’s her frustration
at heritage buildings being removed to
make way for new developments that spurs
Ms Bates on to continue to advocate for
Parramatta’s history
“I think it’s the actual disrespect for the
history of Parramatta, that’s what saddens
me the most. We have lost a lot of heritage
buildings,” she said.
“We’ve been identified as the second city,
which has bought in a lot of developers, and
because of that there appears to be no respect
for heritage buildings. They’re very much
seen as an inconvenience.”
Although she now lives in Concord, Ms Bates
is still heavily involved in a number of organisations
that fight to protect and maintain
Parramatta’s history. And she doesn’t have
plans to stop any time soon, as she focuses her
attention on St John’s Anglican Cathedral in
Centenary Square, Parramatta.
If approved, the redevelopment of Centenary
Square will result in the demolition of the
church hall and see two towers “overshadow”
the cathedral.
“This St John’s development, they’re looking
at delisting and demolishing yet another
heritage building, all [because] it’s inconvenient
for the developer to leave it there,” she
said.
“If we have a 45 storey building to the west of
Centenary Square, the square will be in shadows
a great deal of the day. I don’t want it to
be like that and I don’t think the community
wants it to be like that.”
Ms Bates is also hoping to encourage more
young people to join the fight to protect
Parramatta’s history.
“At the moment we have a very aged cohort
of people looking out for heritage [and] we
need younger people to get involved” she said.
Starting a conversation
Men’s Health Week highlights importance of talking about critical issues
ELLIE BUSBY
Men’s Health Week may be over,
but Western Sydney University’s
(WSU) Centre for Male Health
hopes that important conversations around
men’s health will only continue to grow.
Launched last week at CommBank Stadium,
Men’s Health Week saw thousands of community
members host or attend events in support
of this years’ theme, ‘Building Healthy Environments
for Men and Boys’.
The annual initiative is designed to provoke
thought and discussion about what needs to
be done to improve male health, highlighting
the health challenges faced by men both in
Australia and worldwide.
Centre for Male Health Director and Associate
Professor Emma George said the week
aims to encourage important discussion
around men’s health and supportive environments.
“The real goal for us is to showcase the
importance of the environments in which we
live, work and play and the way they can really
shape our mental health and wellbeing,” she
said.”
Associate Professor George believes each
environment provides its own challenges
when it comes to men’s and boys health, but
there’s a lot that can be done to help.
“Organisations and workplaces can get on
board by drawing attention to the importance
of men’s health and their environment. We
would also like to see them going beyond just
celebrating Men’s Health Week and looking at
how they can support health and wellbeing in
an ongoing way,” she said.
“It’s about making sure we’re continuing
those conversations and discussing men’s
health and some of the challenges boys and
men face.”
For former school teacher and large-scale
muralist Shannon Boyd, mental health in
men and boys is of particular concern. With a
history of panic attacks and anxiety, Mr Boyd
wants to encourage other males to seek out
the tools available to them.
“We’re learning that it’s okay to speak up, it’s
okay to chat with friends, family or professionals
in regards to our mental health,” he said.
“[But] it can still be very awkward for a lot
of young males, oftentimes toxic masculinity
comes into play, I think opening that dialogue
and trying to normalise it as much as we can
[is important].”
Mr Boyd said he doesn’t want Men’s Health
Week to be just another social media trend,
where it’s talked about for a week and then
forgotten.
“Eventually, I would love to see it not be just
one week where we focus on it,” he said.
Instead he’s hoping now that Men’s Health
Week has started a conversation more men
and boys will feel comfortable to “reach out”.
organisation Man Anchor Steve Gamble. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
“If you have a mate that you know you can
open up to, don’t be hesitant because often
the case is everyone’s got something that they
need to chat about,” he said.
“There are also professional avenues and
tools available to you, whether it’s Helpline
or your GP. look after yourself because that’s
what is most important.”
Funding for iconic pathway
An iconic 91 kilometre continuous
pathway linking the Sydney Opera
House to Parramatta Park will be
built as part of a $60 million NSW Government
investment.
Treasurer Matt Kean said the 2022-23
Budget commitment would improve the
lives of tens of thousands of people along
the Parramatta River.
“This pathway will take in some of our
most spectacular sights and unlock the
incredible lifestyle and accessibility opportunities
the route offers for the benefit of
locals and visitors,” Mr Kean said.
Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and
Active Transport Rob Stokes said the
Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link
would be one of Sydney’s longest and
most crucial active transport connections,
traversing 18 suburbs.
“Since 1811 our city’s prosperity has been
propelled by road and rail connections
between the settlements of Sydney and
Parramatta. This new connection will
allow walking and cycling trips to proliferate,
making lives easier, healthier and
more enjoyable for locals, commuters and
visitors for centuries to come.”
Minister for Environment James Griffin
said this pathway will enhance Sydney’s
stunning natural assets, linking them
together for the enjoyment of everyone.
“No matter where you live, you should
LOCAL NEWS
have the opportunity to access, enjoy and
benefit from our environment, and this
new pathway will be a fantastic addition to
the great outdoors for the people of NSW,”
Mr Griffin said.
Member for Drummoyne John Sidoti
said he was delighted to see the funding
extended to the second Bay Run around
Hen and Chicken Bay.
“We know there is strong community
support for the second Bay Run between
Cabarita Bay and Abbotsford because it will
enhance the lives of residents by providing
them with access to their beautiful backyard,”
Mr Sidoti said.
The new funding will facilitate the next
stages of the project, including design of
the initial project stages identified in the
feasibility study, solutions for the remaining
inaccessible foreshore sections, and
prioritisation of works in consultation with
councils.
The $60 million funding was announced
as part of today’s State Budget, with a large
number of commitments revealed prior to
the official handing down of the figures.
Also included in the Budget is a $30
million anti-street harassment initiative
which will include lighting, CCTV and foot
traffic upgrades at Parramatta Park.
The State Government said it was important
to start with Parramatta Park due to its
LAST WEEK’S ANSWER
Our younger readers may have been quick to guess last
week’s answer. The photo was of equipment at Pye Avenue
Reserve in Northmead.
Petrol prices are skyrocketing
again, grocery bills are out of
control and the electricity grid is
under pressure. We know it’s not
all his fault, but it’s been extraordinary
that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is
copping no heat at all over any of this.
Tacky as it was at times, it was
great to have the Logies back
on our screens on Sunday night.
There was a chance this night
could have been lost forever as a
result of the pandemic and other factors. Long
live the Logies in all its cringe.
Sunday night Origin may not be
the best thing going around, but it
does allow us to have an awesome
weekend of representative rugby
league this weekend. Some of the
footy will be absolutely sensational, we’re sure
of it!
It’s time for mask mandates on
Australian airlines to come to an
end. We’re now very much living
with COVID, and while planes are
an obvious danger area, the rest
of our lives have returned to normal. Air travel
should too.
Tackling cyber attacks
Parramatta at the heart of new plan to protect businesses against security threats
ELLIE BUSBY
Western CACE is helping businesses deal with cybersecurity attacks.
Western Sydney University (WSU)
has officially opened a new
centre in Parramatta dedicated to
helping NSW small businesses respond to
cybersecurity incidents.
Based at WSU’s Parramatta City campus,
the Western Centre for Cybersecurity Aid &
Community Engagement (Western CACE)
will provide small businesses with free
services to help protect them against cybersecurity
threats and strengthen cybercrime
fighting capabilities.
Established with the help of more than
$745,000 in funding from the Australian
Government’s Cyber Security Business
Connect and Protect Grants Program, the
centre will assist small business owners in
responding to data breaches, ransomware,
email compromise, phishing and payment
fraud, and implement appropriate security
controls.
Western CACE will also look to work collaboratively
with businesses to upskill staff and
prepare them for future threats by harnessing
the very latest skills, technology and
cybercrime psychology through the centre’s
resources and training programs.
WSU cybersecurity researcher and Director
of Western CACE Professor Alana Maurushat
believes cybercrime has increased significantly
over the last two years.
“Cybersecurity attacks can be very stressful
to an organisation resulting in significant
economic, emotional and even physical
harm,” she said.
“We know cybercrime is becoming increasingly
sophisticated – we have seen incidences
increase dramatically over the last two years
of the pandemic due to the rapid rise in online
interactions and remote working and learning.”
Professor Maurushat said Western CACE
is the “first-of-its-kind in the world” to be
embedded in a university.
“Tackling cybercrime needs to be a high
priority for every business, whether large or
small. Our centre is particularly aimed at
helping small businesses in western Sydney
and across NSW bolster their cybersecurity
defences and give them the tools to recognise
cyber threats, as well as the advice and
support to help them build capacity and
resilience in their organisation against future
cybercrime.”
The centre will also give WSU students
studying a Bachelor of Cybersecurity and
Behaviour an opportunity to show off their
skills, with more than 80 students trained in
cybersecurity incident response set to work
at Western CACE. Students from the School
of Law will also assist at the centre, alongside
government, industry and certification partners.
“Critically, Western CACE is providing our
students with invaluable work integrated
learning and real-world career experience,
with opportunities to network with industry
partners and put their knowledge into practice,”
Professor Maurushat said.
“Our vision is to see Western CACE expand
globally, with free cybersecurity aid centres
popping up in universities and training facilities
around the world.”
For help with cyber incident response, call
Western CACE on (02) 7257 9578 or report a
cyber incident online by heading to https://
Respect, no grudges: Ted and
Erica reveal their marriage tips
ELLIE BUSBY
Fresh off their 60th wedding anniversary,
western Sydney locals Ted and
Erica Roberts are sharing their secret
to a long-lasting and happy marriage.
The couple originally met in Sydney while
playing social tennis in the 1960’s and with a
13-year age gap between them, Mrs Roberts
patiently waited for Mr Roberts to make the
first move.
“We played tennis for quite a while and after
many, many months I said to my Mum, ‘I have
met a very nice man on the tennis court – I
wish he would ring me up and take me out’,”
she said.
“That same afternoon, he rang me up and
organised to take me out. I can’t even tell you
how I felt!”
Looking back on their lives together, Mrs
Roberts said she couldn’t have asked for
a better husband. Mr Roberts worked as a
solicitor for over 50 years until he was in his
80’s while Mrs Roberts looked after their three
children and the house and taught in kindergarten.
The couple made their lives in the western
suburbs, with Mr Roberts working at Pendle
Hill and Wentworthville. He attended high
school at Parramatta High School, where his
three children were later students.
Ted and Erica Roberts celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on a date at Cabrini.
And the secret to a marriage that stands the
test of time? According to Mrs Roberts, it’s not
holding a grudge.
FREE
“We were both only one woman, LAPTOP
one man,
we only wanted to marry once,” she said.
“When we had our differences, we would
just move on, another day is another day and
we just worked it out.”
Work it out they did, with the couple celebrating
their 60th anniversary at aged care
service provider Bolton Clarke Cabrini, which
Mr Roberts is a resident of.
Amid COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions,
their family and the team at Cabrini worked
hard to arrange a special luncheon for the
two. As the couple enjoyed their date, photos
of 19-year-old Mrs Roberts and 32-year-old Mr
Roberts adorned the table, a reminder of how
far they’ve come.
“All I wanted was a date with my husband,
so being able to celebrate together was very
special,” Erica said.
The highlight for Mr Roberts was definitely
dessert.
“We had a tiramisu cake which Ted liked
so much he had three pieces! But he’s 92 now
and every now and again a treat doesn’t hurt.
I can’t say no, he’s the love of my life,” Mrs
Roberts said.
“We’ve had our ups and downs, but we’ve
had a wonderful life. He might not remember
as much now, but I take each day as it comes
and give him all the love I can give him.”
For those also looking to tie the knot, Mrs
Roberts shares some sage advice.
“One big word, respect. Respect is so important,”
she said.
“Share and care for one another, that’s what
I always said to all of my family, once you do
that life will be so much better.”
“The site would easily be worth a half
He claimed WSU failed to consult
with anyone in 2007 prior to their degree
when their diploma courses were relocated
to other campuses.
“This is a legacy educational asset for
you’re keen to follow humanitarian or
spiritual pursuits. You’ll seek out the wise
counsel of a trusted mentor or play that
role yourself to someone who’s looking
for judicious guidance. You’ll also question
your inner motivations, which can
be confronting. But a soulful examination
of your interior life will give you the
self-knowledge and confidence to let
your quintessential Aquarian nature and
unique talents shine.
Tuesday is a big day! It’s Solstice time –
the shortest day of the year (in the southern
hemisphere) and the longest day (in
the northern hemisphere). And there’s a
Venus/Pluto trine – which favours creativity,
passion and romance. And the Sun
shifts into your domestic zone, so loved
ones will be extra appreciative of your
tender loving care. Be inspired by birthday
great, actress Meryl Streep, “My family
really does come first. It always has and
always will.”
Don’t sit on the sidelines Rams! Mars
and Jupiter are both still marching
forward in a positive and proactive way.
Confidence is the rocket fuel that will
take you to exciting new places! You also
have much to gain from sharing ideas
with a compatible colleague, a creative
friend or a curious neighbour, as the Sun,
Mercury and Venus activate your communication
zone.
You’re keen to exercise your Bullish
and converse in increasingly creative
ways. If communication problems arise,
then take the time to discuss and dissect
issues with the people involved. Then
you’ll start to see the current situation
from a much more balanced perspective.
It’s also time to put aside pre-conceived
ideas (that aren’t working) and examine
old beliefs in a creative and philosophical
new light.
The Sun, Mercury and Venus all spend
time in Gemini, which is wonderful for
brainstorming adventurous ideas, which
could lead to an inspired lightbulb moment!
Your creativity and communication
skills are firing, but there’s a tendency
to scatter your energy all over the
place. So focus yourself. From Wednesday,
the Sun shines a spotlight on money
matters. If your finances are in a mess
then try to develop some fiscal skills, with
the help of a professional.
With the Sun transiting into Cancer,
look for a creative or humanitarian project
that you can really sink your teeth
into. Venus and Pluto stimulate your relationship
zone, so aim to be passionate
rather than possessive and creative rather
than clingy. Helping other people – and
putting their wellbeing first – is the key
to a satisfying week. Be inspired by Meryl
Streep, who turns 73 on Wednesday, “The
great gift of human beings is that we have
the power of empathy.”
Disruptive Uranus is moving through
your career zone (until 2025) which will
periodically shake you out of your cosy
comfort zone. This week a relationship
with a student, colleague, client or customer
needs to be reviewed and recalibrated,
as you discover new ways to relate,
debate and communicate. Don’t be
afraid of change! As birthday great Nicole
Kidman observes, “Life has all these
twists and turns. You’ve got to hold on
tight and off you go.”
Are you experiencing problems with a
student, colleague, client or customer?
Drop the “I’m right” attitude and strive
to communicate in more consultative
ways as you inspire others with your
networking skills and inclusive ideas.
Mercury and Jupiter stimulate your
‘money-from-others’ zone so it’s a positive
week for finances. But avoid getting
drawn into other people’s power games.
Pluto and Venus encourage you to be
TALKING TECH
WITH DAVID NORRIS • NORTEC IT • 9894 9514
An effective way to manage emails
If you receive many emails or wake up to a
full inbox every day, it is hard to keep on
top of them. Sorting through these takes
time away from more important things and
reduces your productivity. You can’t organise
a large inbox overnight, but the below steps
will be a good start.
Step One: Hit the Unsubscribe button. Over
the years, you have probably been subscribed
to many places. If you find that, you either
delete them, or they sit unread. It’s time to
unsubscribe.
Step Two: Set up mail flow rules and an
organised structure for your emails. While the
suggestions below may not work for everyone,
this is what works for me. The important thing
is to have a process that works for you
• CC folder: Any emails I am carbon copied
into are moved directly to my CC folder
and looked at once a day. If I am not the
primary recipient, it is information only
and has no required action.
• News folder: Anything which is a massmailed
newsletter is moved to this folder.
It could be any form of newspaper or
industry trade paper. I look at these every
few days.
• Advertising folder: Will include travel,
retail store newsletters, Amazon or eBay.
I would look at this once a week.
• Tomorrow folder: These emails need
attention but can be actioned tomorrow. I
look at these the following morning.
• Next Week Folder: Items requiring an
action but can wait until the following
week are moved here. I action these on a
Monday morning.
• Useful folder: I use this more as a reference
folder to regularly keep the information
I may access.
Step Three: Once you have your rules and
your folders set up. There are only five actions
that can be performed on an email. It is how
you should treat each of the above folders.
• Unsubscribe – If not relevant, unsubscribe
from the email.
• Delete – If there is no action required from
you, delete it.
• Delegate – If an action item requires delegation,
forward it on.
• Defer – Move it into either my Tomorrow
Folder or my Next Week folder.
• Action – Reply to the email with an
actioned response.
Go ahead, give it a go!
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
Photo: Branco Gaica
FROM THE PAGE
TO THE STAGE
CASSIDY PEARCE
Based around themes of acceptance,
belonging and family, it’s
no surprise that Oliver Phommavanh’s
novel Thai-Riffic! has become
a staple for school children
around the country. Now, the stage show
is making waves for its innovation and representation
– and it’s coming to Riverside Theatres
this month.
‘Thai-Riffic!’ tells a story reminiscent of
Oliver’s own life. The main character, Lengy,
is a second-generation Thai Australian, who,
as he transitions into high school, becomes
embarrassed of the way his parents wore their
heritage on their sleeves – especially since
they live in a Thai restaurant.
Oliver believes it’s this personal connection
that helps the book to resonate with so many.
“Especially with the Asian Australians growing
up here, they don’t really feel like they’re
that Australian, even though they were born
here, or have lived here most of their lives,
or perhaps they are more conscious of their
parents’ heritage, so they don’t want to speak
the language, or wear the clothes, or, in my
case here, not want to talk about the food all
the time,” he said.
The relatability factor also comes from the
humour Oliver used throughout the book,
connecting with even more readers.
“I find that it’s that relatable humour that all
kids can relate to, in terms of, every kid thinks
that their parents are daggy, and a little bit
embarrassing, and that cringe sort of comes
through,” he said.
This aspect of the novel is something that
Oliver has seen shine through in the stage
production.
“I’ve been really impressed with how they’ve
taken all the best bits – all the humour, all the
slapstick humour, all the fun parts of my book
– and they’ve put it into the stage production,
and they’ve found a way to tell a different part
of the story,” he said.
Having left the show in the hands of
Nathan Luff very early on, Oliver was happily
surprised to see it further explore the lives of
more minor characters, such as Lengy’s dad,
and his classmate, Hayley. It’s for this reason
that those who have read the book already
will undoubtedly learn even more from the
play, but those who haven’t read the book yet,
will be yearning to do so afterwards.
But, Oliver said that adults watching might
be craving something else after the show.
“I think if you’re an adult who’s watching
this, you’ll really enjoy it as well, because you
actually do get to learn a bit more about the
Thai culture and heritage through the food,
and I guarantee, if you haven’t had dinner
before you watch the show, you’ll want to go
down to the nearest Thai restaurant to have
some Thai food afterwards,” he said.
‘Thai-Riffic!’ will be on at Riverside Theatres
on Tuesday, June 28. Tickets start at $22.
JUST LIKE
THE REAL THING
CASSIDY PEARCE
Despite being formed over 50 years
ago, few bands remain as iconic and
relevant in pop culture as Queen.
Though the vocals and performance quality
of the band is hard to imitate, The Killer
Queen Experience will have you thinking
you’re seeing the real thing.
Formed in 2003, The Killer Queen Experience
first began as a small Queen cover
band, performing gigs out of their home
town in Brisbane.
Now, the Experience has grown to an internationally
touring show, and Australia’s
most sought-after tribute act today.
Much of this comes down to lead singer
John Blunt, who’s not only an original
member of the group, but a Freddie Mercury
impersonator for over 15 years, and one of
the most recognisable Freddie’s around the
world.
Together, the group has created a two-hour
live show, consisting of all of Queen’s greatest
hits, including ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’,
‘We Will Rock You’, ‘We Are the Champions’,
‘Somebody to Love’, ‘Radio Ga Ga’, ‘Another
One Bites the Dust’, plus some lesser known
album tracks for the hardcore fans.
This is a tribute show not to be missed!
‘The Killer Queen Experience’ will be on
at St Marys Band Club on Saturday, June 25
at 8.30pm. Tickets are $39. For more information
or to book, visit stmarysbandclub.
ICONIC SONGS ON
STAGE IN THE WEST
CASSIDY PEARCE
Having sold an estimated 100 million
records worldwide, and earned
inductions into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame in 1990, and the Vocal Group
Hall of Fame in 1999, Frankie Valli and The
Four Seasons are nothing short of iconic.
Now, their essence is being brought to
Penrith, through the all singing, all dancing
tribute act, The Vallies.
The Vallies are Sydney’s newest and most
talked about vocal group and they’re playing
at Panthers next weekend.
Featuring some of the country’s best
talents, including artists from the original
Australian production of ‘Wicked’ as well
as ‘Jersey Boys’, ‘Catch Me If You Can’, ‘The
Little Mermaid’ and a winner of ‘Young
Talent Time’, it’s no surprise that The Vallies
will be doing justice to the greatest hits of the
past 60 years.
We’re sure they’ll play hits like ‘Walk Like A
Man’, ‘Who Loves You’, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’
and of course ‘Sherry’.
As part of the show, the boys will not only
be performing the hits of Frankie Valli and
The Four Seasons, they’ll also be nailing the
sounds of Motown, Doo Wap, Rock ‘n’ Roll
and The Bee Gees.
This show is not to be missed, so get your
tickets now.
‘The Vallies’ will be on at EVAN Theatre
at Penrith Panthers on Sunday, June 26 at
2pm. Tickets are $37.65. For more information
At the movies...
REVIEW
Elvis

2 hour, 39 minutes
Film reviews are easy to write when the
movie is bad or subpar, but what if it’s the
best film you’ve ever seen?
Oh boy, here goes nothing…
Earlier this month, I was fortunate enough
to attend the Sydney premiere of ‘Elvis’, the
highly anticipated, new film by acclaimed
Aussie director Baz Luhrmann.
Incredibly shot almost entirely in Queensland,
‘Elvis’ tells the true story about the
up and down relationship Presley (Austin
Butler) had with his manager Colonel Tom
Parker (Tom Hanks).
From his childhood in Tupelo to his rise
to stardom starting in Memphis and his
conquering of Las Vegas, this movie traces
every important step of Presley’s iconic, and
at times, tragic life.
To be honest, it’s hard for me to put into
words just how special this movie is. I have
seen hundreds of films in my lifetime but
this stands out above them all.
As an Elvis buff, the research and detail
gone in is extraordinary.
Austin Butler’s authentic performance as
the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll will garner him an
Oscar nomination. Tom Hanks’ portrayal
of Colonel Parker is spot on. And the man
that put it all together, Baz Luhrmann, is a
genius in every sense of the word and, after
this, should be declared one of the best
filmmakers of all-time.
But you’re probably thinking, ‘who gives a
crap at what this 30-something sport-loving
fool thinks about cinema?’ – and who can
blame you. So, if you don’t take my word for
it, here’s a snippet of what Priscilla Presley
had to say about the biopic earlier this week.
“Baz Luhrmann has made a film about
Elvis that I feel will leave a mark as one of the
most artistic, creative, stylised and sensitive
films to date, on an important part of Elvis’
life,” she said.
Presley’s only child, his beautiful daughter
Lisa Marie, also gave it her tick of approval
in her own glowing review.
“In my life, it’s been one disappointment
after the other in terms of people portraying
my father in various films or attempts to…
but I tell you this… with all my heart, it’s
been done right.”
Knowing the entire Presley family were on
board would have brought Baz more joy and
relief than any Academy Award ever could.
Ultimately, if you have the family’s support
and backing, any other review – including
this one – is probably meaningless.
AUTO
Isuzu on top of its game
Another Car Manufacturer of the Year title for popular automotive brand
NATHAN TAYLOR
For the second-consecutive year,
Isuzu UTE Australia (IUA) has been
awarded the 'Car Manufacturer of the
Year' title, at the 2021 Roy Morgan Customer
Satisfaction Awards, besting close to 50
Australian automotive brands to the top step
and marking the third time IUA has won the
prestigious award; winning it in 2018, 2020
and 2021.
Congratulating IUA on its repeat category
win, Roy Morgan's CEO, Michele Levine said:
“Isuzu UTE has won its third Annual Roy
Morgan Customer Satisfaction Award as the
Car Manufacturer of the Year. For the first
time Isuzu UTE has now completed backto-back
victories in the category after also
winning the award in 2020 and before that in
2018.”
Revered as one of Australia's largest independent
research companies with over 75
years of experience in collecting objective and
independent information from Australians,
Roy Morgan's customer survey research interviews
over 60,000 consumers each year. That
research data is then analysed on an ongoing
monthly basis, and compiled in a report to
recognise and report on each brand across
each of the 37 categories.
Once tallied up, Roy Morgan's research
Isuzu UTE Australia Managing Director Hiroyasu Sato with the Roy Morgan Car Manufacturer
of the Year Award.
indicated that IUA charted as the top automotive
brand in its segment across the first
six months of 2021, finishing the year with an
overall Customer Satisfaction rating of 96.1
per cent, improving on its results from the
previous year.
“The average customer satisfaction for Isuzu
UTE in 2021 was an exceptional 96.1 per cent
for all customers, an improvement from 94.9
per cent making it the second highest rated
brand for the most satisfied customers of any
of the 37 categories awarded,” Ms Levine said
last week.
"The result shows that an enduring commitment
to meeting and satisfying the needs of
customers can pay off big-time.”
Not only does the high customer satisfaction
survey result of 96.1 per cent validate Isuzu's
award-winning level of customer service,
it also backs the brand's earned reputation
for reliability, with close to 35,000 satisfied
customers choosing an Isuzu D-MAX or
MU-X as their choice of vehicle in 2021.
“We are honoured to be recognised as
Australia's Car Manufacturer of the Year, by
Roy Morgan,” Isuzu UTE Australia Managing
Director, Hiroyasu Sato said.
“This back-to-back award is testament to the
quality and consistency of service provided
at each of our 155 Dealership sites across the
country.
“Our Isuzu UTE Dealers take a customer-centric
approach during every interaction;
so not only are we proud to be tracking in the
right direction by improving in our annual
customer satisfaction results, but we are
thrilled to hear that we are living up to our
current customers' expectations.
“And, to our future customers who are waiting
for their vehicle order, we appreciate their
patience as we work towards delivering vehicle
orders as quickly as possible, and alongside
our Dealers, we are doing everything possible
to communicate the latest delivery timings
by providing frequent vehicle order progress
updates."
Investing in rugby league’s future
NATHAN TAYLOR
The Eels’ Centre of Excellence dreams
have received a monumental boost
after the NSW Government committed
significant funding towards the project.
The Eels Kellyville Park Centre of Excellence
and Community Facility will deliver best in
class high performance facilities for the club
and support the development of future male
and female rugby league stars.
In April 2019, the Eels announced a partnership
with Hills Shire Council and the
Federal Government to build Australia’s
largest community rugby league precinct at
Kellyville Park in north western Sydney.
The project has been split into three stages:
Stage 1 – Already completed with five new
NRL Grade fields, and a temporary modular
facility used by the NRL team and Eels
administration.
Stage 2 – The construction of a Community
Centre and Match Facility that will be the first
venue built in Australia able to hold dedicated
stand-alone NRLW matches, which is due for
completion in late 2023.
Stage 3 – The construction of a 6000sqm
High-Performance Centre to house state-ofthe-art
training and administration facilities
for the Parramatta Eels NRL and NRLW
teams.
The precinct is focused strongly on driving
engagement between the Eels and the wider
community across the Hills District and
western Sydney.
It will be one of the only elite training and
match venues in Australia that will also
include facilities for multiple community
sports clubs, allowing grassroots participants
to train and play within the same precinct as
their sporting heroes.
“Kellyville Park will not only provide a
world-class high performance facility for
the Parramatta Eels NRL, NRLW and Elite
Pathways teams, but will also be a precinct
that will enable our club to connect with
the local community, cater to the changing
needs of one of the fastest-growing regions in
Australia, and increase participation across
all forms of rugby league for boys and girls
from grassroots all the way up to the elite
levels of the game,” Eels CEO, Jim Sarantinos
said.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said it’s a
sensible commitment.
“The NSW Government’s investment in
Rugby League Centres of Excellence is not
only bridging the gap between elite sport and
the general community but cements NSW’s
position as the home of the NRL,” he said.
Minister for Tourism and Sport and Western
Sydney, Stuart Ayres, said investing in projects
like the Centre of Excellence will benefit the
game for generations to come.
“From community engagement to high
performance outcomes, these facilities help
grow the sport and provide local pathways
for our future stars of the NRLW and NRL,” he
said.”
“The opportunity to run community rugby
league programs and NRL/NRLW programs
side by side will play a major role in being able
to grow the sport and enable strong engagement
with our elite athletes and the local
community.”
