World champs: Students
win mathematics award
FOUR YEAR 13 students at
St Andrew’s College have won
the outstanding team award at
the International Mathematical
Modelling Challenge, the highest
honour in the competition.
They were one of three teams
in the world to receive the award,
with the others from Thailand
and the US.
The teams had to solve
the most time-effective way
for passengers to board and
disembark from a narrow-body
and wide-body aircraft.
St Andrew’s College was one
of two New Zealand schools to
compete against 56 other teams
in the international round of
judging.
Team members Toby Harvie,
Luke Zhu, Corin Simcock and
Tom Edwards spent five days
simulating different boarding
and disembarking methods,
generating a randomised queue
of passengers to determine the
most optimal method.
St Andrew’s College teacher
in charge of digital technologies
and mathematics Phil Adams
said the students had to
comprehensively research and
learn about aircraft boarding
algorithms, before identifying
all the complicating variables
like luggage and groups of
passengers.
Hornets’ new clubrooms set to open
• By Chris Barclay
THE END game is in sight
for the Halswell Hornets as
new clubrooms are set to
open at noon on Saturday, the
culmination of a long-term postearthquake
construction goal.
A $2 million project at
Halswell Domain is on track to
be showcased when the Hornets
host Riccarton in the latest
round of the Canterbury Rugby
League premiership on Saturday.
While rugby league is the focal
point of the clubrooms, karate,
softball and netball are among
other sports expected to utilise
the facility.
“It’s been a 10-year exercise. It
goes right back to when we had
the first earthquakes in 2010,”
said senior committee member
Colin Fenwick.
“We went through the process
with the insurance company and
the sad part about it was every
time we had another shake, the
clubrooms were damaged even
further.
“It got to the stage where we
decided to build new clubrooms
provided we get the insurance
money.”
The construction started in
April last year after a $1.9 million
payout was secured, so fortunately
the project was not compromised
by increased costs of
material and supply chain issues.
PROCESS: Halswell Hornets Rugby League Football Club
committee member Colin Fenwick in front of the new
clubrooms that will be opened on Saturday.
Funding was also secured from
the Lottery Grants Board, Rata
Foundation and Canterbury
West Coast Air Rescue Trust so
there is no debt associated with
the venture.
“Without them coming on
board in the last 12 months
we wouldn’t have got it across
the line,” said club stalwart Jeff
Whittaker.
The Hornets earthquake-damaged
clubrooms will be demolished
in the next 4-6 months and
some club memorabilia
will be transferred to the
new headquarters.
However, Fenwick
cautioned against overpopulating
the main
room with Hornets
history.
“We don’t want to
clutter the building,
there’s a huge amount
of memorabilia, there’s cups for
miles. Some of them are probably
obsolete now,” he said, adding
special wallpaper has been commissioned
to depict highlights of
the club’s history.
“It’s got to be a little bit neutral
to some degree I suppose.
“We’ll be going to the outside
market and having functions
there, 21st’s, weddings . . . you
name it,” he said.
“We’re hoping to cater for
those people and partially
have it as a business moving
forward. It’ll cost
$70-80,000 a year to run
the place.”
From a rugby league
perspective, the new
headquarters include two
Jeff changing facilities for visiting
teams and the match
Whittaker
officials, as the home side
will continue to use refurbished
sheds nearby.
“The Halswell premiers want
to stick to their old changing
area, they’re quite happy to
keep that one behind the new
clubrooms,” Whittaker said.
Young mathematicians best in the world
• From page 1
“They took the approach of
mathematically modelling the
variables and the boarding
process, then wrote a complex
computer program in Python to
run simulations of the boarding
process over and over again.
“This enabled them to try different
boarding strategies and
see how they reacted to changing
variables like the disobedience
coefficient, passengers with
carry-on luggage, or groups,”
said Adams.
After running thousands of
trials and analysing the results,
the students were able to settle
on a strategy.
“This took them five full days,
including the time taken to
produce a professional and polished
report summarising their
process and findings.
“They did an incredible job.”
The students found three factors
contributed to the time taken
to board an aircraft, including
the walking speed of passengers,
the time taken to stow overhead
luggage with passengers blocking
the aisle while doing so, and passengers
getting out of their seats
to allow other passengers in the
same row.
After running 10,000 trials,
they found that the most optimal
order of boarding was aft, middle,
and front. Using this method
the mean time taken to fill up a
on average 11 minutes and 30
seconds to finish boarding the
plane.
When it came to exiting the
aircraft the optimal method for a
narrow-body aircraft was found
to be disembarking from back to
the front by row. It was found to
be the quickest due to having the
greatest aisle flow.
This is opposite to the “front to
back” boarding method, which
is employed by most airlines
and was found to be the slowest
disembarking method.
The best method of choice to
immediately speed up passengers
boarding and disembarking in
a standard narrow-body aircraft
was for passengers to be boarded
using the WMA method –
window seats board first,
followed by middle seats and
then aisle seats, but that groups
board together, minimising
aisle blockages and allowing
optimal aisle flow, and should
disembark giving the right
of way to passengers coming
from the back. Both methods
minimise aisle blockages, and
allow optimal aisle flow.
In a wide-body aircraft, they
found the optimal boarding
method was by section –
from back to front, while
disembarking using the “across”
method, similar to the method
for a narrow aircraft, where
passengers furthest from the
door get right of way.
Adams said: “The team’s creativity,
teamwork and mathematical
skill make them a standout
and it will be exciting to see
where they go to from here”.
The results of the study have
been collated in a 20-page report
and made available for airline
executives.
Madi is one step closer to netball goal
• By Jaime Cunningham
FOR MADI Smith, being
selected in the Aotearoa Māori
Netball secondary schools’
team was once a long-term goal,
but after being named in the
team’s squad of 20 this month,
she is now a step closer to the
achievement.
The 16-year-old is the only
Canterbury representative in the
squad and one of just two South
Island players named.
“I’m so
honoured and
really happy
about it,”
Madi said.
The year 12
Christchurch
Girls’
Madi Smith
High School
student is
also the only player in the squad
representing her iwi, Ngāi Tahu,
and says being able to represent
a Māori team is important to her
because of the connections the
athletes share.
“I think it’s cool because we’re all
kind of bonded, like we’re all somehow
connected to each other.”
Madi, a shooter, says her family
were equally as happy as her
and “really proud”.
“I’m happy that I get to represent
my dad’s side of the family
… I just love my culture.”
Madi has had her fair share of
achievements in her short netball
career so far.
At just 14, she made Kereru
Club’s premier A team. Last year,
Madi finished third in Christchurch
Netball Centre’s most
valuable player standings at the
end of the season. She’s also been
invited to the New Zealand Secondary
Schools’ national netball
camps for the last two years.
This year, Madi has made
the under-18 Canterbury Red
representative team and is in her
second year of playing for the
CGHS senior A team.
But right now, nothing is more
significant to Madi than being
named in the final Māori Secondary
School team in August.
“I would love to; I really hope
I do.”
The team of 12, along with
three travelling reserves, will
play in pending tournaments in
October and be coached by Jess
Huia with Renee Matoe as an
assistant coach.
Current ANZ Premiership
players such as Aliyah Dunn,
Tayla Earle and Paris Lokotui
have all played for the Māori
team in the past and have since
made the Silver Ferns’ development
squad.
Madi has played netball for
about seven years, only trying
out volleyball previously to “try
She hopes to be selected for the
Intermediate Schools
specialists in Year 7
and Year 8 education
Intermediate Schools are exciting
places for students to begin their
adventure into adolescence!
Intermediate aged children are
changing rapidly – physically,
emotionally and socially. Intermediate
Schools plan and resource
deliberately to meet early adolescent
needs, help build self esteem,
assist students to develop and find
strengths and link learning with
career aspirations.
Intermediate Schools have a mix of
specialist and home room teachers
which enhance the choice, challenge,
practical activities and academic
rigour that can be provided.
An intermediate school can support
your child by providing:
• Opportunities to excel and thrive
right across the curriculum both in
and out of the classroom
• Broad enrichment and extension
opportunities
• Opportunities to develop leadership
skills
• Carefully tailored wellbeing and
supported learning programmes
• Teachers who understand and have
an affinity for this age and stage
• Structured and safe learning
environments that focus on
relationships, emotional and
academic development
• Technology and specialist
programmes that are hands-on and
designed to encourage creativity and
curiosity
• Schools that are resourced and
designed to meet the needs of this
age group with age appropriate
experiences, opportunities and
challenges
• Challenging extra-curricular
experiences
The intermediate schools and
principals in Christchurch work
closely together to collectively provide
a wide range of extracurricular
opportunities for students in sporting,
cultural and academic contexts.
From novices to rugby champions
Christchurch Girls’
High School is a
rugby powerhouse,
dominating the Miles
Toyota Cup in recent
years. But when
current CGHS coach
Jamie Livingston
began leading the
team in 2015, few of
the hopeful rugby
players knew how to
play the game. Jaime
Cunningham reports
WHEN Christchurch Girls High
overpowered Lincoln Combined
1st XV 100-0 the players had no
idea of the score because they
were focused on enjoying the
game, coach Jamie Livingston
says.
Since Livingstone began
coaching the team at the end of
2015, they have won the Miles
Toyota Cup every year and only
lost one game.
Enjoying playing is a big part
of his mantra.
It was Livingstone’s rugby
director role at High School Old
Boys’ Rugby Club that lead him
to take on the role of head coach
at CGHS when a group of girls
asked him to coach the school’s
rugby sevens team for the Condors
competition in 2015.
When Livingstone first started
coaching at CGHS, girls were
wanting to play rugby but had no
idea how to play.
“I’d say three-quarters of them
had never tackled before.”
This year, there are girls in the
team who have played for years.
Livingstone says this is due to
growing interest. As professional
women’s rugby gets more exposure,
this interest filters down to
the grassroots.
“There was a premier women’s
SUCCESS:
Jamie
Livingstone
and the
title-winning
Christchurch
Girls’ High
School team.
game before a premier men’s one
with a big crowd. A lot of people
were surprised at the quality, but
for me, I’m not surprised at all.
I’ve been in the game and know
what the girls’ and women’s game
can do.”
This year the school has
entered two teams in the Miles
Toyota Cup for the second year
running, and Livingstone says
to get both teams in the top four
of the competition would be
“special”.
Although the 2nd XV has not
yet seen the same success as the
school’s top team, Livingstone
says the young team training
with the 1st XV is important,
so they get exposed to what is
required at the next level.
Known as “Livo” to the girls
he coaches, Livingstone is highly
respected by teachers, students,
and parents.
Craig Thornhill, a teacher,
and director of rugby at CGHS
says Livingstone’s dedication
to the school has led to a stable
environment of ongoing rugby
development.
He says without him, CGHS
rugby would not have enjoyed
such success.
Recently, former CGHS players
Grace Brooker and Jorja
Miller have received national
contracts, while Rosie Kelly
also played for Matatū in Super
Rugby Aupiki this year.
Eighteen-year-old Miller says
Livingstone is the coach every
girl’s school needs and he is what
drew her to play for CGHS.
“He is a selfless, driven and
enthusiastic coach that ensures
every player has the best opportunity
to be their best and strive
at the game,” she said.
For Livingstone, there is always
“a buzz” when girls get first
named for Canterbury but seeing
old girls continue playing rugby
after school is just as significant
as seeing girls play for New Zealand,
he says.
Looking to the future, he aims
to strengthen all 45 current players,
so each girl has an opportunity
to lead the way in the team
in a few years.
But for himself as a coach,
although Livingstone says he
would love the opportunity
to coach at a regional level, he
wants to keep enjoying being a
part of the CGHS rugby programme.
“My focus at the moment is
CGHS and making them the best
team on and off the field they
can be.”
THIS LIVELY TRIO ARE IN
GOOD HANDS AT NGAIO MARSH
Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village resthome
residents Marj, Shirley and Dorothy,
or Dot as she likes to be known, enjoy
meeting up regularly for a game of cards
or an evening refreshment.
“They’ve developed quite a friendship,”
says Vicky, the care centre unit
coordinator. The three ladies also have
a strong relationship with Vicky and
love the wonderful care they receive at
Ngaio Marsh.
Vicky has been a part of the village
team for nearly six years and knows how
important security, comfort and social
gatherings have been, particularly as we
deal with COVID-19 in New Zealand.
Marj says she and the other residents
like the atrium area that runs through
the village centre near their rooms.
They will on occasion have a meal in
the sunlit area filled with indoor plants.
“We’ve had all the staff running around
after us… serving us,” she adds.
They also love keeping in touch with
family members who like to come for
visits to the much-loved Papanui village.
Shirley says she and her husband
Bert moved into Ngaio Marsh from
another village and have been thrilled
that Bert has been able to receive extra
care. They spent part of their lives
in Hastings and eventually moved to
Christchurch to be closer to family.
“The village is reasonably close to my
daughters to visit.”
She particularly enjoys the village
van trips out and about to locations
like Lyttelton, the mouth of the
Waimakariri River and Geraldine.
“We take the café (coffee and tea)
with us,” Shirley says.
Dot lived in Opawa and then
Papanui before moving into the village
with her husband. Her husband moved
in first, and she would visit him before
making the move herself from the
family home.
“I eventually came in here, and it’s
very, very good. They look after us very
well. We’ve got a wonderful lady here
(Vicky) if you want any help, she’s on
the spot,” Dot says.
Since Marj moved into the resthome,
she’s made quite a network of friends
including of course Dot and Shirley.
Pictured from left: Dorothy, Marj and Shirley
Marj says it is nice to talk with each other
about what they’ve done in their lives
and the families they have, plus where
they’ve lived.
All three ladies love getting involved
in the village activities programme
hosted by Activities and Lifestyle
Coordinator Mary. It includes
Ryman’s exclusive Triple A exercise
classes, and events like quizzes and
guest speakers.
“Mary is the best one you could ever
have to help you exercise and make
you jolly. As soon as you walk in, you
know you’re going to be welcomed,”
Dot says.
Vicky adds that all three ladies were keen
participants in a recent village talent
quest, with Marj taking out the prize for
best dressed. They are also keen walkers
and like taking in Ngaio Marsh’s awardwinning
gardens on a stroll.
Vicky says the staff members are
enthusiastic when it comes to making
sure the level of care and attention to
detail is of the highest order.
Being there when you need us is
just one of the ways we’re pioneering
a new way of living.
