roundabout
does not go
far enough

AFTER ongoing consultations,
pedestrian improvements are
finally being made at a Cashmere
roundabout but not all residents
are happy with the changes.
The Waihoro Spreydon-
Cashmere Community Board
approved a design to improve
pedestrian crossings at the
Barrington St/Cashmere Rd/
Purau Tce roundabout.
The design will see a new
refuge island installed on the
Barrington St approach and
improvements to the existing
refuge crossing points on
Cashmere Rd.
Geoff McPhail, who lives just
down the road from the roundabout,
said residents have raised
concerns about safety at the site
for about 20 years now and the
new design won’t change much.
“Basically we’ve achieved
nothing in 20-odd years, no
improvements at all. They’re
going to slightly improve what’s
there but I would argue it’s not
really material from a big picture

McPhail said the roads
connecting to the roundabout
were busy and often people would
be waiting for a while to cross.
“You shouldn’t be crossing
a roundabout because people
don’t indicate and you end up
just diving across between cars,
basically.”
He said a lot of people cross
a few metres down from the
roundabout on Cashmere Rd,
which has a sharp and dangerous
corner.

EILEEN KERR received a
fake vaccination booster form
in her mailbox and while she
recognised it was fake, she didn’t
think everyone would.
Now the 70-year-old Spreydon
resident is warning others to be
wary of similar hoaxes.
When Eileen wen to co lect
the mail, she noticed what
appeared to be a form to
book your Covid-19 booster
vaccinations in advance.
She sat down a the dinner
table with pen in hand, abou to
start fi ling ou the form, when
she noticed something strange.
“I started reading and that’s
when the bomb went off,” she said.
The form read: “Jabbing our
way to a “safer” New Zealand?”
That was enough to make Eileen
question its authenticity, in spite
of how official it looked.

kids with
cricket a
way of life
for mother
and family

CRICKET HAS been a large part of
Libby Hickford’s life, yet after 46 years
of playing and coaching it’s the sense of
community that keeps her involved with
the sport.
Since becoming a budding young
cricketer a the age of five Hickford has
coached teams, mentored coaches, sat
on cricket committees and even met her
husband through the game.
Now the 51-year-old runs the Sydenham
Junior Cricket Club, overseeing
training, club management and being
responsible for more than 300 members.
Hickford’s interest in cricket stemmed
from her father who played and while
she had to play in a boys team at school
due to the sport being very male dominated
she quickly became hooked.
“I just really enjoyed the game and
I got to play it quite a bit at lunch time
with the boys,” she said.
“My passion for cricket grew from
there.”
Hickford was eventua ly able to play in
a girls team during high school and later
dabbled in indoor cricket, where she met
her “very cricket passionate” husband
Allan when she was 21.

School packs
take pressure
off struggling
families

A SURPRISE from an old school friend
and a nationwide company has seen the
Hoon Hay Food Bank create a new ‘back to
school pack’ for children in need.

Corrin Webster
was surprised when
employees of Air New
Zealand arrived a the
food bank with a bunch
of school supplies to
donate.
“They jus turned
up out of nowhere, we
didn’t know they were
coming,” he said. “It
was rea ly awesome.”
One of the employees explained that Air
New Zealand did a similar thing last year
by donating to a charity of their choice, and
this year the Hoon Hay Food Bank was on
their radar after finding them on Facebook.
“It’s amazing to know that such a
nationwide company as big as Air New
Zealand has noticed somebody as sma l as
us,” Webster said. “It’s a rea ly good feeling
and it’s good to get that recognition from
somebody so important.”
Among the supplies Air New Zealand
donated were lunch boxes with drink
bottles and sma l containers for food
storage.
A couple weeks before Air New Zealand
donated the school supplies, an old school
friend of Webster’s had visited to drop off a
bunch of school shoes.
This also took Webster by surprise,
as he hadn’t seen his friend Becca since
intermediate and without Facebook she
wasn’t fo lowing the food bank online.

Seniors have isolation concerns
while library is being rebuilt

loosing their space to connect
with each other during South
Library’s rebuild have been
raised.

Helene Lautner wrote to the
Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board at its latest
meeting, addressing the
“negative impact” the library’s
temporary closure will have on
older adults.
Lautner said the library is a
well-used facility, particularly
for older adults in the community
and for some, it is their
opportunity to socialise.
“It also gives people the
chance to get out of their house
into a safe environment where
it’s warm to use the computers,”
she said.
“Or maybe some older adults
come just to sit and read in the
library to escape long hours of
being alone at home.”
The city council confirmed
South Library will be rebuilt due
to earthquake damage repairs
costing more than demolishing
and rebuilding it.
No start date has been set for
work to begin but it is estimated
to take 18 months.
Lautner said many people she
knows use the space to meet
friends and connect with each
other, which is a huge factor in
people’s lives.
“This has become part of the
structure of the community,
having the library available so if
you remove that structure you
can’t easily recreate it on your
own,” she said.
“I’m there frequently. If you go
there at anytime it’s pretty full
with people.”
Lautner said the closure of
South Library would have a
“significant negative impact” on
the older adults if there was no
alternative venue offered during
the rebuild.
“Loneliness and isolation are
alleviated when individuals
come to the library and sit in
comfortable chairs set up in a
conversational design that encourages
strangers to talk to one
another.”
She said she would like the
community board to think
about these issues and investigate
venues that can be used as
a temporary space for people to
meet and connect during the
library’s rebuild.

now, it could be longer,” she

Community board chair
Karolin Potter said the Spreydon
and Cashmere areas have
slightly more older people than
other areas in the city.
She said she supports the
committee’s request to have
a temporary space while the
library undergoes its rebuild and
staff are looking into this.
“People love that library. It’s a
place where people can go to
feel the warmth of others
around them without talking
to them.”

Caroline Mason said she is really
pleased the city council supported

In 2011, McPhail spoke to the
community board about a proposal
to install a refuge island on
Cashmere Rd where people cross,
to combat safety issues with the
tight corner.
He said traffic engineers visited
the site and recommended this
proposal, however it was not
passed by the community board
at the time.
“This is about the fourth time
they’ve consulted the people to
look at it,” McPhail said.
“They just don’t seem to
want to address it at all, these
centre islands have been put
in everywhere else. Why
they don’t want to put one in
to give everyone a safe space
to cross I don’t know, I just
don’t get it.”
Last year a group called
Barrington Cashmere Safe
Streets was formed to provide a
voice about pedestrian and cycle
safety issues in the area.
The group consulted with
Cashmere High School, Hohepa
Canterbury residential services,
and Thorrington Primary School.
Each shared concerns of safety
around crossing Cashmere Rd
and the roundabout.

of a priority for pedestrians
here, but if we

Potter said once the bus lane
goes through, which is pending,
city council staff will reassess the
roundabout.
The community board agenda
stated the roundabout is not
identified as a high risk site –
compared to others in the city
– using KiwiRAP assessment
criteria, and therefore is not a
priority for funding.

Basil, 80, and working 40 hours a week

AT AN AGE when most of us
have hung up the gloves – Basil
Plato is out the door to full-time
employment in Christchurch.
A statistical anomaly, Basil
turns 81 this year and says he has
no plans to retire. He supports
six men with disabilities in a
house in Halswell – and has been
with four of them for 22 years.
Their average age is 65.
So why is this veteran working
40 hours a week?
“For one thing, I like these
guys,” he said.
“We’ve seen a bit of life together.
People need assistance
out there.
“Work keeps you plugged into
life, feeling younger and ‘with
it’ – but I know the truth when
I look in the mirror. I’ve got
my mates, mostly retired now.
Oldies tend to talk about their
aches and pains – and they’re
legitimate concerns.
“But I just think, while I’ve got
my health, there’s more for me
yet. If I slow down, I might start
noticing all the bad stuff about

as an independent contractor
in forestry around Canterbury,
as well as on dairy farms and
building sites in the region. He

when he took time out to care for
his wife during a long illness.
“People commented on my
carer skills, and about 2000,
a friend saw jobs in disability
homes and said: “Hey you’d be
good at that,” he said.
This was a period in New
Zealand when policy on disability
was changing. The state
was winding up a historic
programme to segregate babies,
children and adults with intellectual
disability in institutions.
People were being released to
join the community.
Basil landed a job with NZ-
Care (now NZCommunity Living)
– a Government-funded inhome
support provider. NZCare
was responsible for resettling
residents from the Templeton
Centre between the mid-1990s
and 2000.
Templeton was New Zealand’s
first and largest psychopaedic
institution. Built in 1928, and
originally called the ‘Templeton
Farm Colony’, its purpose was to

‘detain mental defectives.’
Basil says he knew little about
disability at first.
“We’d all heard the spooky
rumours about places like Templeton.
But you didn’t know. You
didn’t see the people,” he said.
“I remember my first day, I
was put on for a nightshift. At
the end of it I thought – well,
this won’t be my cup of tea. But
I turned up the next day and my
manager said: ‘You’ve come back
– you’ll be okay’.”
Basil says the clincher for him
was NZCare’s proviso that staff
obtain formal qualifications.
“I had to do a level 4 certificate,
which was hard for me, but disability
is a skilled support area.
I wouldn’t have known how to
understand and support the people.
I mean, I didn’t know there
were people who didn’t speak,”
he says.
Basil says with time, training
and experience, he learnt there
were other ways to converse,
grasp and relate to people.
“It takes years though to really
‘get’ a different communication,”
he said.
Five of the six residents are
non-verbal, with autism a common
theme.
“We’re always trying to read
and understand what’s going
on for them. We’re all pretty
predictable, and these guys are
no different.
“But we just wish we knew
more sometimes – that they
could tell us – look, I’ve got a
bloody headache, a toothache,
my arthritic knee’s getting
bitten into, I’m craving cheese,
oranges, coffee – or I’m just extra
hungry today and this time it’s
serious, not my usual haggle,” he
says.
Basil says he’s a person who is
always observing, thinking and
trying to figure out what makes
others tick.

“Oh training is key. Then you need

– you have to be there for the guys.

he says.
And does Basil regard the men as
friends? “Yes and no,” he said.
“People matter. You build relationships
in this job. But I also realise, I can only do
my bit. I’ve got another life – a partner,
friends, kids, grandkids. The switch does
goes off. But I think you need that boundary.”
A colleague who works closely with Basil
says: “The residents all love Basil. Maybe
it’s his communication style, tone of voice,
mannerisms, humour or longevity. But
some breathe a sigh of relief when comes
in or gets back from holidays, a sort of
‘thank God you’re here.’ Maybe they’ve
had enough of us mostly females.”
With staff turnover notoriously high in
disability work, and women composing
most of its workforce – this group of residents
in a Halswell house could be doing a
lot worse than having this enduring man
in their lives.
Finally, when asked the obligatory career
question of, so, where do you see yourself
in 10 years? Basil laughs and says: “Las
Vegas. That was the plan before Covid. I’d
really like to see Las Vegas.”
There is a Royal Commission of Inquiry
in New Zealand into historic abuse in care
between 1950 and 1999. A public hearing,
which will include the experiences of
people with disabilities in institutions, will
be held in July. This is a chance to make
disability history seen and heard.
