MARCH 2009 13 A Message for All from the Delhi Campus Child Care Center During the week of April 20th-24th, Delhi Campus Child Care Center in North Hall will be celebrating the “Week of the Young Child.” Week of the Young Child, sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, is an opportunity for early childhood programs across the country to hold activities to bring awareness to the needs of young children. It is a time to recognize the importance of early learning and early literacy, and to celebrate the teachers and policies that bring early childhood education to young children. During the month of April, the children will be collecting food for the Delaware County Food Bank. Please help the children by bringing non perishable food to DC-4 in North Hall before Friday April 24 th . Thank You! While calls can be Anonymous, it is very helpful to successfully investigate hazing if we have a name and contact number of the person reporting the incident for further questions if needed. Residence Halls Build Toward the Future By John Padovani, Director of Residence Life In the beginning there was the dormitory, a place mainly for students to sleep, though they might read a textbook there and maybe interact with a few friends on their fl oor. Today with advent of the residence halls, these buildings serve multiple purposes and act as social hubs for college students with increased sophistication and up-to-date technology. Students living on-campus can now study and socialize both in person and over the internet. They can participate in commerce via the web, and of course, they can be entertained through sites like YouTube and other social networking sites. Over the past few years the Offi ce of Residence Life, the campus Capital Construction Offi ce, Information Services, Student Life and the College Foundation have endeavored to upgrade the residence hall and student housing at SUNY Delhi, improving services to students. In the past three years over $7 million dollars has been spent to upgrade the residence halls and student housing. This includes new bathrooms in Murphy and O’Connor Halls, adding bedrooms to DuBois Hall, replacing fl oor tiling in Murphy, O’Connor and Catskill Halls, and upgrading the wireless access points in all the residence halls. In addition to upgrading current on-campus housing, this past fall the Riverview Townhouses were opened, providing students another campus-sponsored housing experience. Life in Riverview gives residents the experience of the off-campus apartment atmosphere mixed with the support and services of on-campus housing. This year and moving forward, more work will continue in the halls. Major projects will include new bathrooms for Russell Hall and updated laundry rooms in all the residence halls. Improvement to the buildings’ card swipe and security systems are also planned. Students living in Murphy, O’Connor and DuBois Halls have started to see the work in progress as their buildings’ exterior doors are replaced. The College has an aggressive fi ve-year capital plan for the residence halls. Every year the plan is reviewed and revised to incorporate changing student needs and new technology. Students interested in seeing the full capital plan or suggesting improvements in the residence halls can stop by the Offi ce of Residence Life in 111 Catskill Hall or email reslife@delhi.edu. LA Governor Jindal = Kenneth, the Page? By Sylvania Yip The Republican Party seems prone to throwing public fi gures that end up in political and media disasters lately. The most recent one to the publication date of this paper is he GOP’s response to the President’s State of the Union. But before the speaker, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, even reached the microphone, I couldn’t help but think: Of course the GOP picked a minority. I couldn’t help thinking that the Republicans keep thrusting their minority players in the spotlight. First Palin, then Steele (fi rst black person to head GOP), and now Jindal. The fi rst thing that Jindal talked about was how historical a moment this was because Obama is black. Then he talked about the President’s racial history and then his own history, as if comparing his background to Obama’s. This made me feel mildly nauseous, most probably because it was incredibly tacky and because it seemed like that was a big reason for the party’s choice for Jindal. Then I started to realize what I also found very off-putting: Jindal’s folksy, sing-song, hunkydory voice. When he was telling his story about the Sheriff in Louisiana and his instance of cutting through bureaucratic nonsense, I was reminded of Sarah Palin’s tone to a reporter when she explained what a VP’s duties were. He sounded like he was reading a story to children (Mr. Rogers?). Others have likened him to Kenneth the Page, the meek character on NBC’s hit show 30Rock. (Look for the viral video on YouTube.) How did a Rhode’s Scholar end up in this position? Another part about his speech that I found disturbing was the fact that he points out his experience as the governor of a state that was struck by the Katrina tragedy as a source and reason for his distrust in government. The tragedy was terribly handled by the Bush Administration, but it’s not a reason to totally away from government. Jindal puts a spin on the trust issue though. He doesn’t say that we shouldn’t trust big government, but that the nature of big government doesn’t trust us because “instead of trusting us to make wise decisions with our own money, they passed the largest government spending bill in history.” He points to points to parts of the stimulus package that he fi nds wasteful such as money towards volcano monitoring and high-speed rail projects. To me, volcano monitoring is a good thing – it saves lives. And high speed rail transportation is something people have long been clamoring for. (Look at how far behind our railroads are compared to those of other major industrialized nations!) A public transportation project would not only create jobs, but lessen the traffi c on the roads, and lower our carbon emissions. Jindal explained the republican’s desire solution to our energy problem when he echoed the “Drill, baby, drill” slogan– while Obama spoke of spending real capital on alternative energy-cont’d page 14
