SUNY DELHI STUDENTS HONORED BY CHANCELLOR
Two SUNY Delhi seniors have been named
2009 recipients of the Chancellor’s Award
for Student Excellence. Brianne Slocum, a
Culinary Arts major from Taberg, and Brian
Wallenhorst, a Hotel and Resort Management
major from Hilton, are among an elite group
of students to be honored by the State University
of New York on April 7 at the Empire
State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.
“We are very proud that Brianne and Brian
have been selected to receive this prestigious
honor,” said SUNY Delhi President Candace Vancko. “Their achievements
are exceptional, and they deserve to be recognized among the top
students in the SUNY system.”
Brianne Slocum has distinguished herself in the classroom, in culinary
competition, and in community service while attending SUNY Delhi. She
consistently receives academic honors despite a rigorous practice and
competition schedule for her culinary studies. Slocum served as captain of
the Delhi culinary team that captured the American Culinary Federation
(ACF) New York State and Northeast Region Championships in 2008.
The team then went on to compete at the ACF National Championship,
earning a silver medal and the distinction of the fi rst all-female team to
compete for the national championship. Last month, Slocum earned the
title of Student Chef of the Year for the ACF Northeast Region and will
now compete for the national title in Orlando, Fla., July 11-14.
Beyond culinary competition, Slocum has served as president, secretary,
and now treasurer of the college’s Escoffi er Club. Under her leadership,
the club has received the President’s Award for Excellence in Community
Service for two consecutive years. Slocum has volunteered for numerous
community events and frequently uses her culinary talents to assist with
fundraisers such as Delaware County’s Relay for Life in 2006, 2007 and
2008, the college’s Dinner Theatre in 2006 and 2007, and the Delaware

The competition was judged based upon a points system.
Each individual starts out with forty points and
then they try to maintain these forty points. Points are
deducted when the judges feel they did not complete
something correctly. Then the fi nal score is broken
down into medal categories. This was Brianne’s fi rst
time winning the gold medal for this specifi c competition.
Brianne is originally from the small town of Taberg
in upstate New York. She will be graduating in May
2009 with her degree in Culinary Arts. Brianne fi rst
became interested in culinary when she was younger.
She enjoyed cooking by experimenting with all different
types of foods. When she found out that she
could attend college for cooking she thought that
it was, “the coolest thing ever,” and ended up right
here at SUNY Delhi. Some of Brianne’s culinary
role models include: two famous Chef’s, Julia Child
and Rachael Ray. Another one of her role models is
Delhi’s Culinary Arts professor Chef Thomas Recinella.
“He’s been the best coach in the world and I
defi nitely wouldn’t be where I am now without him,”
said Brianne. When Brianne was asked how she remains
calm and focused during competitions she
stated, “It’s not that easy. I think it’s just my personality
and lots of practicing, because by the time I go
to compete somewhere I am prepared and I know my
objectives.” Brianne’s future career goals and aspirations
are that she simply wants to be successful while
doing a job that she loves to do.
This is the second year in a row that a student from
SUNY Delhi has won this award. We wish Brianne
all the best and good luck as she competes again in
July in Orlando, Florida for the National Student
Chef of the Year Championship during the ACF National
Conference.

County Historical Society in 2006. She has
been honored as Hospitality Student of the
Month and is a junior member of the American
Culinary Federation for three years.
Brian Wallenhorst is a true leader serving
as student senate president and previously
serving as senate vice president. He has
spent many hours developing his leadership
skills through his participation in organizations
such as Student Programming Board,
where he served as secretary, Constitutional
Review Committee, Food Service Committee, and in positions such as a
night host, a resident assistant, and a student ambassador for the college.
Wallenhorst has served as member of the SUNY Delhi College Council
and as a member of the board of directors of the College Association at
Delhi, Inc. He has attended the Association for the Promotion of Campus
Activities Conference and the National Association of College Activities
Conference. Wallenhorst has been recognized by his academic program as
Hospitality Student of the Month and has received the college’s Student
Life Leadership Award.
Wallenhorst has completed over 130 hours of community service volunteering
for events such as Crop Walk, Relay for Life, Saturday’s Bread,
and the Village of Delhi’s Harvest Festival. Wallenhorst also volunteers
his time on campus with the college’s Dance Marathon fundraiser, Red
Cross blood drives, Community Service Day, concerts, campus clean-up,
Souper Bowl of Caring, Family Day, Great American Smoke Out, campus
revitalization, TDX softball tournament, and Regalia Fashion Show.
Congratulations to both Brianne and Brian for making our entire
campus proud!
KUDOS!
To SUNY Delhi’s Ice Sculpting Team who, for the
fi rst time ever, placed in a national competition at
the National Ice Carving Association Collegiate Invitational
on January 10 in Holland, Mich. The team
then went on to earn honors at the U.S. Collegiate Ice
Carving National Championships in Frankenmuth,
Mich. January 23-25.
Congratulations to the winners of the First Annual
SUNY Delhi Narrative Essay Contest: 1st Place :
“The Inner Working of My Room” by Ana Cristina
Ramos; 2nd Place : “Can Cough Drops go Bad?”
by Stephanie Davis; 3rd Place : “ Fenwick Island ”
by Leah Paskalides. These essays will be published
in the spring 2009 edition of Agate, the college’s literary
magazine. The award winners will be honored
and awarded cash prizes at the Agate reception later
this semester.
