CAR BREAK-IN records seem to be
shattering in Christchurch as glass
repair specialists deal with an influx of
smashed quarter windows, a popular
mode of access for thieves.
A Smith and Smith branch in the
city estimated they were replacing up
to 10 of the small rear widows a day,
providing stock was available.
A Star Media photographer had his
Toyota Corolla targeted at Victoria
Park on June 14.
Thieves used a hammer-like
implement to smash the window and
steal a backpack containing a wallet
around 11.25am.

their own artistic side.

a LAF Variety Show provides
world-class performers presented
by MC Shay Horay, guaranteeing
you a hilarious night of buskers,
thespians, jokers, and acrobats that
is sure to sell out.

event ranging from
street buskers to live music
and workshops.
Lyttelton has taken its
time to recover from the
devastation of the earthquakes
and while there is still much
to be done, particularly along
the waterfront, it is getting
there.
Events like the arts festival,
and Sail GP when it arrives,
will continue to put the port
on the must-do map.
Add in more on its
amazing history, build a
couple of hotels, and staying
the weekend could be an
alternative to going to Akaroa.

Daly’s Wharf requires a

to explore the possibility of a
small crane being installed to
lift fish crates from vessels and
whether light vehicles can use
the wharf.
There may be heritage issues
that limit the suitability of Daly’s
Wharf to cater for these shortterm
needs.
City council staff held a meeting
with operators and the wider
community last week, in Akaroa,
to raise the alternative working
options. Staff provided an
overview of the project and what
temporary working options will
be in place during the rebuild,
and listened to suggestions and
feedback. They also discussed
what will happen with utilities,
fuel provision and transport and
access while the work is carried
out.
The iconic Akaroa Wharf –
originally built in 1887 – is being
fully replaced as it is nearing
the end of its usable life based
on a 2018 structural condition
assessment.
A concept design for the
replacement wharf was approved
at a city council meeting in May.
A tender process to appoint
a design team is under way,
with construction estimated to
begin in 2024 pending design
and consent. The target for
completion is June 30, 2025.

A SURVEY is revealing a strong
sense of community in the
Lyttelton Harbour and Port Levy
areas.
The purpose of the city
council survey is to gain a better
understanding of risk tolerance
from the impacts of sea level rise.

can help the community,

informed, community-specific
decisions during phase three of
the coastal hazards adaptation
planning programme, ’ said head
of planning and consents, John

wi l take at least 1.5 years to do

students planning a potentially
record-setting rocket launch
this week are assuring worried

well prepared and have safety
measures in place.

aim to exceed the current altitude
record for a student-led rocket
programme held by the University
of Southern California, which
reached an altitude of 104km.
“We’re very prepared this time,
this wi l be the third attempt and
we’ve got all of the appropriate
safety measures in place,” said
project leader Jack Davies.
He said a 400 litre-capacity
water tanker wi l be on site while
the Little River volunteer fire
brigade will be alerted if required.

site.

Sydenham and Linwood at noon
and 12.22pm before the card was
deactivated.
Car break-ins are common in
the area, with the city council
installing security cameras on
park buildings. Warning signs for
motorists have also been posted.
The incident was far from isolated,
say glass repair businesses.
A Novus Glass branch staff
member said: “This is just one
shop but I can tell you in May we
did over double the amount of
smash repairs (to door windows)
from last year (May).
“It does sort of seem like a
crime wave. I’m trying to deal
with one of the broken glasses at
the moment.”
The time required to replace
the glass depended on the make
and model.
“If they’re oddball cars, some of
them take a little bit longer.”
Autoglass Specialists also reported
a busier workload replacing
quarter windows over the last
two months, with Opawa often
cropping up as a location.
“We’ve definitely noticed it.
There’s heaps of Mazda Demios
getting broken into,” the spokesman
said.
“There’s been stolen cars and cars
just broken into where nothing’s
been taken . . . general vandalism.
“It sort of started happening all
of a sudden in the last month or
two. We do get runs of them, two
or three people calling in a day
with the same story.
“There is a pattern of smaller
cars getting the back quarter
window broken. They’re not even
taking the car, something they’re
not taking anything.”
Police were unable to provide
accurate figures of car break-ins
in Christchurch this week, saying
a request for data would need to
be an Official Information Act
request. Police then have up to 20
working days to provide the data.
Targeting the Mazda Demio is
not unusual; the model takes the
dubious honour of being New
Zealand’s most stolen car, as
Canterbury trails only Auckland
for vehicle theft claims handled
by major insurer, AMI.
Of the 12,000 claims received
by AMI between 2019 and 2021,
the Demio accounted for 10 per
cent in spite of making up just 1.5

environment you are parked in

Thriving wetland surprises researcher

the Avon-Heathcote Estuary/
Ihutai in Ferrymead.
Third-year Canterbury
University Bachelor of Science
student Julia Palmer found 175
different invertebrate species
living in the restored wetland
at Charlesworth Reserve in a
recently completed study.
Forty of them were common
species and 135 were rare. They
included spiders, beetles, bees
and weta.
Palmer was awarded a summer
scholarship by the Avon-Heathcote
Estuary/Ihutai Trust to
study insect diversity at the 20ha
reserve, which is bordered by Linwood
Ave and Humphreys Drive.
Her work built on earlier
research undertaken in 2016 and
2017 that found 39 insect species
and a 2020/21 study that found 73
species.
Since a planting programme
began in 2005, more than 120,000
trees, shrubs and saltmarsh
plants have been planted on what
was mainly pastureland.
The work was largely undertaken
by volunteers, co-ordinated
by the trust and supervised by
city council ecologist Andrew
Crossland.

established native flora to exotic

diverse habitats for invertebrates
to populate.
Palmer said variety was one of
the most fascinating aspects of
her research.
“The diversity that I found
throughout the wetland was
incredible. It was also interesting
to see how the diversity ranged
between the different habitats of
the wetland,” she said.
“It was a small area so I was
surprised – I was uncertain I
would find so many. Some of
them were so tiny and would hide
so you had to go looking.”
The presence of a large,
untouched patch of salt-marsh
on the site, which pre-dates
European settlement, could also
be underpinning the diversity of
invertebrates, said Palmer.
“It is quite a large area with
other connecting patches which
could be a source of many of
the native/endemic species. The
invertebrates could have been
limited to this area before it was
restored, so we are lucky to have
this historic area.”
Trust chair Tanya Jenkins
said Palmer’s study was the
most comprehensive research
conducted at the site.
“Considering this wetland
was still a paddock in 2005
with probably a small number
of worms, flies and spiders this
proves the benefits of ‘working
with nature’ by planting the right
species to support invertebrates.”

New collective takes sustainability in its stride

Festivals of Action – 1# Plastics
on Saturday at the Lyttelton
Recreation Centre starting at
1pm, sponsored by Lyttelton Port
Company.
The name comes from the
mana whenua place name for
Lyttelton – Ōhinehou – and a
collaborative approach with community
organisations including
the Harbour Co-op, Te Hāpu o
Ngāti Wheke, Lyttelton Primary
School, Kids First kindergarten,
Project Lyttleton and Canterbury
University.
“Sustainability challenges can
feel overwhelming – and it’s hard
to know what one person can do.
So, we thought ‘let’s start with
one thing and let’s do it together’,”
organiser and Lyttelton resident
Breeze Robertson said.
The collective aims to engage
with the issue of plastics, and the
microplastics they break down
into, in a relaxed and fun way to
normalise conversations about
sustainability and encourage
people to be informed and take
action.

kindergarten children are working
on a special plastic artwork
display for the event.
“They were very engaged, and
it just reminds me how important
it is for adults to role-model being
proactive and engaged with sustainability
issues,” Tulett said.
There are plans for further
community festival events to
address sustainability issues
such as fashion, food and carbon
emissions.

Desperate bid to save abandoned pig

A DISABLED pet kunekune
with a gentle nature was left to
die on the side of the road.
Runner Kathryn Meyers came
across the pig at 11.30am on
Friday, sparking a two-and-a
half-hour rescue operation
involving about eight people.
“I couldn’t bear to not see it
through and see her taken into a
nicer environment, because I felt
humans had failed her by leaving
her there,” Meyers said.
The group was able to get
the kunekune
standing and
transport it to
the Christchurch
SPCA about
2pm, where it
is understood it
was euthanised

Whoever
dumped the pig left sawdust and
hay bedding, as well as pig nuts,
kiwifruit and leeks. However, the
food was out of reach.
Meyers said the pig seemed
hungry and eagerly ate from her
hands.
“She was very gentle and
friendly. I was patting her a lot,”
Meyers said.
The kunekune was also
“extremely thirsty” and later,

Passersby had stopped to help,
while others came to the scene,
including a veterinarian and
Selwyn District Council ranger,
after Meyers posted to the West
Melton Facebook community
group.
“I can hardly deal with this
cruelty. Someone has dumped
this pig down by the forest on
the side of the road. Can anyone
please help me? The pig is
friendly and looks sad or hurt,”
she wrote. Meyers believed
it had been left there, off to
the side of Weedons Ross Rd
near West Melton Forest, within
the last hour as she noticed
it when she ran past an hour
earlier.
Megan Strydon and her friend
Steph Milne came across the
small group that had gathered as
they were riding their horses in
the area.
Strydon is co-manager of
Arion Farm Education Park at
McLeans Island, and called on
her experience with kunekune
pigs. She was able to get it
standing, but found due to its
suspected arthritis the pig could
only walk on its knees.
The vet administered pain
relief and Strydon and Milne
used their horse float to
transport it to the SPCA, which
agreed to take it in.
Strydon said the pig had
obviously been a pet. It was a
fully grown adult female, but not
elderly. It had been well looked
after, with a “beautiful coat” and
trimmed hooves.
She condemned the actions
of the person or people who
dumped it. She urged anyone
considering dumping animals to
think about the distress it caused
them. Pigs in particular are
sociable and intelligent creatures,
like dogs.
“If I put it politely, I think
it’s disgusting. There’s always
a better way, even if they got a
farmer to come and shoot her,
that would have been better than
starving and freezing to death
on the side of the road,” Strydon
said.
She went back to the SPCA
the following day, learning later
that day it had been put to sleep
following an examination by a
pig specialist.
“They did try,” Strydon said.
A SPCA spokesperson said the
organisation was conducting an
investigation and was unable to
make any comment.
Meyers, who lives in West
Melton, said the group of about
eight people who gathered
to help was testimony to the
kindness and community spirit
of locals.
At least one of them had
offered to give the kunekune a
home if she had of survived.
“Everyone was hoping she
would lead a better life and go
somewhere happy. At least she
didn’t die on the side of the road
by herself,” Meyers said.

Treasures from the past: To
the South Pole on a tractor
IN 1958, struggling through
shifting snow banks and eroded
snow ridges while braving icy
crevasses, Sir Edmund Hillary
and his New Zealand team
were the first explorers to reach
the South Pole by mechanical
means, doing so on three iconic
TE-20 Ferguson farm tractors.
As part of the 1955-58
Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic
Expedition, the New Zealand
team had been tasked with
laying food and fuel depots to
prepare for the Dr Vivian Fuchsled
British team’s historic bid for
the pole.
Having none of that, and
against the instructions of
the co-ordinating committee,
Hillary fancied his team’s – and
nation’s – chances after laying
the depots down. He decided
to become the first to brave the
overland route in the 46 years
since Captain Scott’s ill-fated
1912 expedition (and Amundsen’s
triumph just before him)
– on a bright-red ‘Little Grey
Fergie’, no less.
The TE-20 Ferguson tractor
had proven itself handy on
the 1954 Australian Antarctic
Expedition, being used in the
construction of Mawson Station.

base using two half-track diesel
fergies, which very much impressed
Hillary for their reliability
and easy maintenance in the
harsh conditions.
For the Commonwealth
Trans-Antarctic Expedition to
the South Pole, the New Zealand
team’s TE-20s were modified
by the Norwegian company
Eikmaskin A/S in consultation

The following year, Fuchs and
with Hillary, having an extra
wheel fitted on each side with
continuous tracks.
Heavy duty starter motors,
generators and larger batteries
were fitted along with silicon-coated
wiring harnesses to
protect against the cold. Other
than a coat of bright-red paint to
make them more visible against
the snow, and roll bars with a
canvas canopy for shelter, no
other major modifications were
done to the tractors, which operated
perfectly well in Antarctic
summertime temperatures as
low as -25 degrees celsius.
Hillary and his fellow drivers
Derek Wright and Murray Ellis,
assisted by four dog sled crews
and airborne support, arrived at
the South Pole on their Ferguson
tractors on January 4, 1958.
In response to the furore that
followed Hillary’s trumping of
the British contingent, when he
briefly became ‘the most hated
man in England’, he stated: “It
was becoming clear to me that
a supporting role was not my
particular strength. Once we
had done all that was asked of us
– and a good bit more – I could
see no reason why we shouldn’t
be organising a few interesting
challenges for ourselves.”

Sports sedan kind to environment
ARE YOU considering buying
another car, even a sports sedan?
If the answer is yes but you
know it’s time to look at a more
environmentally-friendly option
then the chances are you’ve
considered a hybrid.
That’s where Toyota’s Camry
comes in. You can have a hybrid
and a sports sedan all in one
package. The latest Camry to
come out of the Toyota factories
incorporates an SX version,
meaning simply it has fitment
that gives it a type of sporty edge.
The items I’m talking about are
spring and damper rates firmed
slightly over the standard model
(and luxury ZR), while the SX
has a discreet bootlid spoiler, side
skirts, 19in wheels (up one inch)
and black accents around a new
grille and headlights. Inside, the
sport-specification front seats
have a buyer’s choice of red or
black leather accents.
The Camry is available here in
three variants, regular readers
will recall my range-topping ZR
evaluation in April and will relate
to my favourable comments. It is
a discreet hybrid, other than the
badges, and it is a car that never
fails to impress.
The ZR at $52,490 is very much
a luxury vehicle, the SX sits below
that at $48,490 and is certainly
biased to lure the sporty buyer,
the big wheels are black and with
the body kit it looks like a low,
sleek four-door coupe.
For interest’s sake, the
entry-level GX sits at $43,990,
reiterating all Camry models
are now hybrid, there’s no other
option.
The SX model landed in my
driveway the week after the ZR,
and if I did have one criticism
it would be the SX lacks heated
seats. Both the ZR and SX get full
leather trim and the weather had
turned cold in Canterbury, naked
leather isn’t very inviting to climb
into.
Nevertheless, that was my only
gripe, I’d happily save the $4k to
have the sporty version, its more
involving presence certainly hints
at how I like a car to look and
feel. It does get some up-market
features elsewhere – satellite
navigation, Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto connectivity,
paddle-shift gear selectors,
adaptive cruise control and keyless
entry and ignition are all fitted.
Of course, the new Camry also
gets a five-star Australasian New
Car Assessment Program safety
rating, the Toyota Safety Sense
suite of kit is very proactive,
aiding driving in normal day-today
situations.
The Camry also looks
spectacular, it has edgy styling
and looks which ooze character.
That’s no surprise, if you take a
look at any of the Toyota/Lexus
designs these days you will find
all vehicles have strong focal
points.

It also handles as well as it
looks, the sport-tuned suspension
provides flat and balanced body
control, there is a strong feel of
grip through sport specification
Dunlop tyres (235/40 x 19in),
while accuracy and steering
feedback are assured.
The suspension is a fully
independent front-strut/reardouble
wishbone system, and if
you combine all of these elements
you have a supple chassis that is
capable in all driving situations.
Toyota’s well proven Hybrid
Synergy Drive engine/motor
system lurks under the bonnet.
There are no surprises these
days in terms of how it operates,
hybrids have been with us for
many years now and the way
they work is so seamless that it
feels just as if you are driving a
car with an internal combustion
engine only.
However, the benefits of
hybrid are many-fold. The two
most important are those of its
ability to minimise fuel use, and
to provide the type of driving a
buyer would expect from the size
of engine he/she chooses.
The Camry hybrid utilises a
2.5-litre petrol engine, its job is
not just to create propulsion, but
it charges a battery bank that in
turn provides drive to an electric
motor. The transition can only be

picked up if your senses are astute
or you are watching the internal
display graphics, the process
cycles constantly depending on
throttle load, weight in the car,
road undulations and windaffected
drag.
The end result is with 160kW
on tap the engine feels very lively,
and with a lot of low down torque
that you get from a big fourcylinder
engine, the Camry has
all the power that you need. For
the record, a standstill to 100km/h
time of 8.1sec can be expected.
If you are paying to fill up the
tank you’ll be pleased to know
it is also wonderfully thrifty.
Toyota rates the Camry with a
best possible usage of 4.7-litre
per 100km on a combined cycle
average. That correlates well with
the 5.7l/100km figure constantly
showing in the dash panel
readouts.
The SX hybrid provided me
with one of the most enjoyable
drives I’ve had for 2022. I took the
evaluation car on a long journey
south to the Mackenzie Country,
and on those long flowing roads
it just felt so nice to be in, it is
quiet, plush and lives up to its
designation as a sporty model.
That is the essence of the
Camry hybrid. If Toyota had put
a GT badge on it I wouldn’t have
been disappointed. It’s a fabulous
cruising car and one that does its
best to make comfortable travel
for its occupants.
Sure, the suspension on the
SX is gently firmer than that
of the other variants, but that
only serves to smooth cornering
speed and takes away more of the
body’s gravitational movement.
Also, if you are thinking the low
profile tyres would affect ride
quality, that is certainly not the
case because clever suspension
disguises that.
The Camry hybrid also
qualifies for the Government’s
low carbon emission clean car
discount, buyers can expect
temping rebates from $2490 to
$3160, depending on the variant.
Surely, now is a good time find a
way into Toyota’s biggest sedan.
