WHILE MOST people throw
away bottle top lids when they’re
finished with them, one man
sees the value they hold,
and collects every lid he
can get his hands on.
In Chris Koch’s garage
at his New Brighton
home lies around one
million bottle cap lids,
waiting to be repurposed into art,
jewellery or his latest creation,
Liddy Boards.
Koch collects bottle lids from
the community at the New
Brighton Seaside Market and uses
them to reduce plastic waste and
raise awareness on how things
can be recycled.
He
moved to
New Zealand
from Germany eight
years ago with his wife
Vicky and they started their
business Poly Lab NZ just before
Covid hit.

not being included in the city
council’s annual plan made for a
“pretty frustrating day”, a local
councillor said.

The city council’s
annual plan was finalised last
week, with funding allocated
to various projects around the
city.
Johanson had put forward
specific streets, which had been
assessed and costed over the last
two years as part of the Capital
Acceleration Fund process, in
Bromley and North Linwood.
The streets Johanson had put
forward were Hay, Jollie and
Thomas Sts in Bromley, and
McLean, Norwich, Carnarvon,
Worcester and Dacre Sts in North
Linwood.
However, these were ruled
out because improvement
requirements were unable to be
assessed within the timeframe
– between the draft amendment
being provided and the council
meeting – a city council
spokesperson said.

Call to reinstate sandcastle competition

A PLEA HAS gone out to restart
the hugely popular sandcastle
competition at New Brighton
Beach – but it needs people to
organise it.
The competition, organised
by the Pegasus Bay Charitable
Trust, was last held in 2015 and
attracted thousands of spectators.

board and get the New Zealand
Sandcastle Competition going
again.
Sintes said the earthquake
repairs to the pier during 2017-
2018 played a role in putting the
competition on hold, as the construction
equipment and vehicles
took up space in the car parks and
on the beach.
Sintes said it was now hoped
others would step up.
“We’ve been involved for quite
a while and we’ve had a lull of
getting over the earthquakes . .
. then we’ve had Covid,” Sintes
said.
“We’ve put too much work in
to let it go, we’d like to pass it onto
someone else.”
The trust was formed in 2010
as a way to bring people back to

Frustration over waste led to Liddy project

project . . . we started with
zero money so basically just in
our free time,” he said.
Koch was inspired to start
making things out of recycled
bottle top lids from a group in
Holland who started a precious
plastic movement, recycling plastic
in small quantities.
He was also frustrated with the
amount of waste being produced
after participating in beach cleanups
around New Brighton.
Koch made his first Liddy
Board for his five-year-old twins
Mateo and Rosalie who had just
started school as a way for them
to practice counting.
However, they used it more for
making patterns and pictures,
leaving Koch to believe that it
could be good for fine motor
skills. This gave him the idea to
implement the boards into primary
schools and donated one to
Riccarton Primary School to act
as a test run.
Koch received a text from the
librarian that said the pupils use
it every single day, mostly playing
imaginary games but also a lot
of pattern making and conversations
about throwing away bottle
lids.
Koch said the feedback is
encouraging and he thinks the
boards could be beneficial for
kids with special needs who may
have a hard time concentrating
and sitting still.
“It’s a calming activity for them
and being creative and the kids
start talking about recycling and
bottle caps, it’s pretty cool,” he
said.
Koch makes the boards from

joineries, putting it through a
machine called a table top CNC
router that shaves the board

with all these amazing materials,
in the submissions to the city
council”.
“People want the broken streets
in the east fixed, they’re sick of
waiting. They feel like council’s
spending a huge amount of
money on other things.”
He said he will be pursuing
city council staff and following
up on getting roading in the
east fixed to a suitable
standard.
“To get things done in the east
it’s very high quality stuff they
put out there, even the bottle lids,
they’re food grade plastic and
they’re only used once so there’s
nothing wrong with it.”
Koch washes the bottle lids by
putting them through a double
cycle in the washing machine
and uses about 150 for a board,
depending on its size.
He said the feedback he’s
received about the Liddy
Boards so far has been “really
encouraging” and he hopes
to make more to start selling
eventually.
“It gets me motivated to carry
on and make more. At the
moment we’ve all been a bit sick
and inflation is rising and the
Ukraine war and everything so
it’s a bit of a weird time,” he said.
“Sometimes I’m a bit
demotivated but then this kind of
gets me going again.”

Search for the hidden Matariki stars

A COMMUNITY group has
found a creative way to celebrate
Matariki while catering to
anxiety around Covid.
The Phillipstown Communtiy
Hub has a treasure hunt running
until Saturday for people to scout
out nine stars hidden around the
suburb.
Hub manager Vivian Zaletti
said the hub has always put on
some type of family friendly
holiday for Matariki, including
stone carving, a hangi and a
bouncy castle.
However,
this year

said public
attendance
at the hub
had dropped
because

concerned
about catching Covid.
“Covid has impacted not just
the health but also the anxiety of
people,” she said.
“Some of the people we work
with don’t feel comfortable
around a multitude of people so
this year we wanted to design
something that was fun . . . that
it was able to make them feel
safe.”
People can download an app
and scan a QR code for clues to
the hidden stars or print one off
from the hub’s Facebook page
with prizes worth $75 to be won.
HUNT: The nine stars were designed by artists from
Ōtautahi Creative Spaces and hidden around Phillipstown
for people to find.
Each star is in a location that
relates to the dominion of the
star, for example Pōhutukawa is
the star connected to those who
passed away so the star was put
in a location related to funerals.
The stars were designed by
artists from Ōtautahi Creative
Spaces which is located at the
hub and printed onto a 1m wide
board made of corflute.
Zaletti said the treasure hunt
also encourages people to get
outdoors and walk around their
neighbourhood in a fun and safe
way.
“The idea is also to celebrate
the neighbourhood because
the profile of Phillipstown is
run-down, not really [a] safe
neighbourhood and we wanted
to present the neighbourhood in
a different way.”
The hub also received funding
from the Waikura Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board and Christchurch Airport
to go towards printing and prize
costs.
Zaletti said once the treasure
hunt ends the stars may go to
Christchurch Airport for a
temporary exhibit before going
back to the hub.
