I have always loved all aspects of art and design,
noticing patterns, compositions, colour and
texture in the things that I see around me. I have
a background in graphic design and worked in
the industry for eight years, before moving into
teaching in 2007. I then worked as a lecturer on
degree courses and as an Adult Education Tutor
for Aspire Sussex, before running independent
workshops and courses from my studio in
Storrington. It was whilst undertaking a PGCE
in Adult Education at Northbrook College, that I
became drawn towards the colour and tactility of
textiles as a medium.
Over the past 15 years, I have learnt and
practiced a whole range of techniques, which
I have developed and made my own. I work
predominantly with machine embroidery, as I
love the freedom and speed of mark making,
using a sewing machine to “draw with stitch”,
creating collages which often integrate paper and
other mixed media elements. However, I also
like the more meditative approach of hand stitch,
depending on the artwork. There are no rules
to what I make! In addition, I use Batik dying
and silk painting, as well as screen printing and
printing my own papers.
I am drawn to the natural world for inspiration,
especially the textures and intricate patterns
of plants and the landscape around us. I enjoy
walking - the landscape of the South Downs and
the local coastline are a big influence. I work
intuitively, trying to capture the energy, memory
and my feelings in response to what I see. Recently
I have become interested in more abstract work,
exploring surface design patterns, lines and
layering which have personal meaning to me.
Central to my work as an artist, is teaching; I
really enjoy passing on skills to other people and
hold workshops and courses in my studio in
Storrington and in venues around Sussex. My
aim is to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere
in a small group setting, with lots of one-to-one
tuition. I believe creativity is crucial for a happy
and fulfilling life and I try to encourage this
however I can.
