WOOLSTON ROVERS 28 HUNSLET WARRIORS 22

(NCL 18/06/2022)

Woolston Rovers bounced back to winning ways with a very hard-fought victory over Hunslet

Warriors in a very physical National Conference League Division Two encounter at the Limestone

Construction Field, Monks Sports Club.

Rovers got off to the best possible start by opening the scoring in the third minute when stand off

Theo Holt put second row Paul Alcock through a gap and he powered over on the right. Full back

Aaron Barber converted but then thirteen minutes later Hunslet had second row Dillon Thornton

dismissed for direct contact to the head whilst Rovers centre Kieran Moore was shown a yellow

card for running in.

Just after the midway point of the half a handling error by Rovers on the visitors twenty metre line

and Warriors winger Jake Corney picked up the loose ball and raced eighty metres to score on

the left. Stand off Jordan Gale converted to level the scores and then five minutes later Hunslet

hooker McKenzie Taylor combined with Gale to find full back Tyler Dargan linking into the line and

he went through a gap to score on the left.

Eight minutes before the break Rovers hooker Adam Files was tackled twenty metres out and

a quick play the ball on the last tackle saw loose forward Ryan Brown go from dummy half and

stretch out to score at the side of the posts. Barber added the conversion to give his side a narrow

12-10 half time advantage.

Two minutes into the second half good play by Rovers scrum half Dec Leonard and Holt paved

the way for prop forward Harry Files to use his strength and twist in the tackle to score under the

posts. Barber converted and five minutes later a lovely kick out wide by Holt bounced awkwardly

but winger Tom Byrne was able to knock the ball into the path of Moore who scored in the right

corner.

Rovers moved further clear when some slick passing created room for Moore to return the favour

and put Byrne over in the right corner. Barbed converted from the touchline to put Rovers in

command but the visitors refused to lie down and quick hands stretched the Rovers defence and

Dargan collected a fine pass from Gale and raced away to score on the left. Gale added the conversion

to give hope to the Leeds outfit.

The game became scrappy for the final ten minutes with both sides guilty of several mistakes but

then right on the stroke of full time the Warriors went over again when Taylor found second row

Dale Bateson who scored on the left. Gale added the conversion to make the scoreboard look a

little more respectable but it was Rovers who were able to celebrate a deserved 28-22 success.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers loose forward Ryan Brown. He was very well supported

by second row Paul Alcock and centre Dan Fearnley.
