Woolston Rovers produced a brilliant fightback but were cruelly denied at the death as they went
down to a narrow defeat at high flying Barrow Island in a pulsating National Conference League
Division Two game at Ratings Lane, Barrow.
Barrow Island opened the scoring after two minutes with a try from winger Adam Wright, Stand off
Brad Marwood converted and eight minutes later winger Sam Jones went over wide out on the
left.
The home side were over once again shortly afterwards when full back Blain Marwood crossed;
Brad Marwood converted but then midway through the half Rovers got on the scoreboard with a
try from centre Dan Fearnley. Second row Craig Lawton added the conversion.
Rovers went over once again just before the half hour when winger Dan Griffiths scored. Lawton
converted but then seven minutes before the break Blain Marwood crossed for another try. Brad
Marwood added the conversion to give his side a 22-12 half time lead.
Island increased their advantage four minutes into the second half when Adam Ford scored a try.
Brad Marwood converted but five minutes later Rovers hooker Adam Files went over for a trademark
try. Lawton added the conversion.
Rovers were now on the front foot and Fearnley scored on the right. Lawton converted and then
on sixty six minutes Fearnley completed a fine hat trick. Lawton added the conversion to put
Rovers ahead 30-28.
With three minutes remaining Rovers hearts were broken as Blain Marwood went over for his hat
trick try to nudge his side back ahead and a last minute penalty from centre Max Anderson-Moore
rounded off a thrilling encounter and gave the Barrow side a 34-30 win that keeps them in second
place in the league table.
Best for Rovers were centre Dan Fearnley, scrum half Ryan Brown, second row Craig Lawton and
prop forward Ryan Hickman.
