WOOLSTON ROVERS ‘A’ 28 THATTO HEATH CRUSADERS ‘A’ 24
(NWML 01/07/2022)
Woolston Rovers ‘A’ produced a brilliant performance to claim an impressive victory over top of
the table Thatto Heath Crusaders ‘B’ in the NWML Division Three at the Limestone Construction
Field, Monk Sports Club.
Thatto opened the scoring in the third minute when centre Dan Munt raced thirty meres to score
under the posts. Stand off James Murray converted and then five minutes later hooker Drew Kennedy
twisted in the tackle to score. Murray added the conversion.
Rovers responded almost immediately when great hands from loose forward Paul Alcock and
hooker James Tarpey worked the ball out to scrum half Jay-Jay Catterall and he sent centre Craig
Woolvine away to score. Catterall converted and then six minutes before the break a great inside
ball from stand off Elliott Best found second row Sam Vernon who went over for a try to make the
half time score 12-10 in the visitors favour.
Four minutes into the second half Rovers went ahead for the first time when slick handling along
the line saw the ball reach Tarpey who put centre Olly Parr over in the right corner but then eleven
minutes later Thatto were back in front when back-to-back penalties allowed them to get deep into
the Woolston half and prop forward Jonny Rae crashed over. Murray added the conversion.
Just after the hour Rovers responded when Tarpey broke through the defensive line and passed
out to Vernon who raced thirty metres to score in the right corner and level matters and then six
minutes later a great pass by Catterall found Woolvine who scored on the left. Catterall added the
conversion to give his side a six point advantage.
Thatto refused to lie down and they came back once again when slick handling paved the way for
scrum half Connor Goldthorpe to score. Murray converted to tie the scores once again but then
with three minutes remaining a high kick by Tarpey was fumbled by Thatto and Rovers substitute
Tom Fagan pounced on the loose ball to score in the left corner and complete a thrilling 28-24
success for a jubilant Green & Gold side.
The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers prop forward Ben Crewe. He was very well supported
by centre Craig Woolvine and second row Sam Vernon.
