Honeymooning and winning
Gold went side by side
Edmonton(ATB): “I am so
overwhelmed with joy. I came for honeymooning
and Waheguru Ji blessed me with Gold medal”
expressed Jessy Sahota, Wrestler and Kabaddi
player while celebrating his win of 1 st place Gold
Medal in Heavyweight Wrestling in the World
Police & Fire Championship at Netherlands.
“I beam with pride that my nephew has excelled
on an international level and has become role
model for our youth” stated Lakhvir Aujla,
Kabaddi enthusiast and office bearer of Alberta
Punjabi Sports Club, Edmonton.
“Our Club has always motivated Jessy and
recognized in our various tournaments” said
Rana Dhaliwal, Alberta Punjabi Sports Club
associate and driving force behind Kabaddi
tournaments held at Edmonton.
Jessy Sahota is Constable with Delta Police

Kudos Jessy and please do help to attract our
youth towards sports and shun drugs and Gang
wars.
2.62 Million Backlog sits
with Canada Immigration
Edmonton(ATB):
Applications are piling
up even higher at
Immigration, Refugees
and Citizenship
Canada (IRCC) and hit
2.62 million in mid-July
despite a drop in the
backlog for permanent
residency and
citizenship, the latest
figures show.
“In terms of temporary
residence, IRCC is
receiving a much higher
volume of applications,”
noted IRCC
spokesperson Julie
Lafortune in an e-
mailed response
to Immigration.ca on
Friday.
“During the first five
months of 2022, IRCC
received 31 per cent
more temporary
resident applications,
or 1,940,993 compared
to 1,482,143, during the
same period in 2019,
before the pandemic.”
Permanent residence
applications at the
IRCC had dropped
about 1.5 per cent, to
514,116 on July 17 from
522,047 about five
weeks earlier.
And citizenship
applications in the
backlog also fell by a
little more than 1.8 per
cent during that time,
from 394,664 to
387,368.
The IRCC is processing
a more applications
this year than it did in
2019, the last full year
before the COVID-19
pandemic. There are, in
particular, a lot more
study permits going
through the system.
“It is worth noting that
between January and
May 2022, IRCC
processed 221,522
study permit
applications,” said
Lafortune. “This
compares with 128,021
in 2019, before the
pandemic. This
represents a 73 per
cent increase in
processing of
international study
permits so far in 2022
compared to the same
time period in 2019.”
But the IRCC is still
facing a mountain of
applications.
“Global migration has
been upended by the
pandemic,” said
Lafortune. “Application
inventories grew during
the pandemic while
health and travel
restrictions were in
effect and it will take
some time to fully
recover. IRCC is
committed to providing
quality client service
across its global
network by managing
our programs and
services in an efficient
manner aligned with
our goals.” The number
of applications in the
system for temporary
residence are
skyrocketing this year,
jumping by 248,950, or
roughly 16.9 per cent,
from by 1,471,173 in
early June to 1,720,123

2.62 Million Backlog sits with Canada Immigration
(Continued..Page 1)
by mid-July. A big driver of
the jump in temporary
residence applications is
the Canada-Ukraine
Authorization for
E m e r g e n c y
Travel (CUAET), a
program launched by
Ottawa on March 17 to
welcome an unlimited
number of Ukrainians
fleeing their war-torn
country.
The latest IRCC figures
show 362,664
applications were
received under that
program as of July 5, up
66,501, or 22.4 per cent,
from 296,163 only a
month earlier. Just under
half of those, 151,353,
had been approved as of
early this month.
Canada Border Services
Agency (CBSA) reports
that 58,869 Ukrainians
have come to Canada in
the first six months of this
year, including 9,223 at
land crossings and
49,646 by air.
“This is the fastest, safest,
and most efficient way for
Ukrainians to come to
Canada,” tweeted
Immigration Minister
Sean Fraser earlier this
year. “It eliminates most
of the normal visa
requirements for all
Ukrainian nationals, with
the exception of
background and security
screening.”
Another big driver of
immigration this year has
been the one-time,
temporary-to-permanent
resident (TR-to-PR)
program which took
applications until
November and was
flooded with 84,177
applications.
That pathway targeted
healthcare and other
workers in Canada and
recent international
graduates from
Canadian colleges and
universities. It applied
across the country with
the exception of the
francophone province of
Quebec which operates
its own immigration
system.
By mid-July, 51,392
immigrants gained their
permanent residency to
Canada under this
pathway. In its
Immigration Levels Plan
for 2022 to 2024, Canada
had targeted 40,000 new
permanent residents
under federal economic
public policies for this year,
which includes the TR-to-
PR pathway, with a range
of 30,000 to 48,000 new
permanent residents. It
has already surpassed
that target. In the backlog,
the latest figures from the
IRCC show 211,903
applications for
economic immigration,
118,251 for family
sponsorships, 29,848 for
humanitarian and
compassionate grounds,
and 154,098 for protected
persons and refugees.

Asian
Star
Mary is a multi-passionate entrepreneur that
wears many hats and loves each one. She’s
a proud mom of 3, a dedicated CFO for a Real
Estate Development & Commercial Leasing
Company where she also holds the title of
Chief Financial Officer and Senior Commercial
Property Manager. Just when you think how
can one person hold the responsibility of so
many roles, she is also the founder and CEO
of a 100% natural skin care line.
Mary’s story starts at a different time and a
much different place. At only one years old,
Mary became a refugee. Her mother
courageously fled Vietnam after the war as
one of the “Vietnamese Boat People”, risking
everything for the chance at a better life.
Boarding a small, overcrowded boat in the
middle of the night with Mary clutched in her
arms, her mother made a choice to leave with
nothing but the clothes on her back. Against
all the odds, she defeated failure.
Even at a young age, Mary has faced
unimaginable challenges and with her mother
as her role model, she overcame each
obstacle until she created a life filled with
abundance, creativity, and love. Mary’s
hardworking drive stems from her mother’s
brave choice to give her the opportunity for a
better life.
This drive to work hard and overcome
challenges has fueled her multidimensional
career. Over the past twenty years, Mary has
worked in Real Estate Syndication and
Developments - a largely male-dominated
industry. Business Development was always
her strength but she also dabbled asa Project
Manager for a variety of additional projects in
the City of Edmonton, including restaurants
and hotel developments. Mary learned touse
her creative passion to design floor plans,
choose color palettes, and more. During these
projects, she was responsible for sourcing and
procuring materials from overseas and has
many years of Global Supply Chain
experience.
Recognized for her strong leadership,
organizational, and multi-tasking skills, Mary
currently holds the title of a Chief Financial
Officer (CFO), Senior Commercial Property
Manager, Project Manager, overseeing a
portfolio of over 400 Commercial tenants and
almost two million square feet of commercial
space in the City of Edmonton. In this role,
she is responsible for the logistics and dayto-day
financial operations of the corporation,
accounting, rent rolls, payroll, leasing,
scheduling, tenant improvements and more,
and she also manages a full team of staff.
In addition to her work as a CFO/Commercial
Property Manager/Project Manager, Mary also
owns and operates a natural and cruelty-free
skin care line. With a family history of
eczema, she knows firsthand how powerful
natural skin care products are to people’s
health and confidence. She selects all of her
ingredients directly from local businesses and
small communities across the globe with
Mary Tran
science and collaboration as her focus. Her
goal is to not only help her customers achieve
radiant skin, but to also improve and support
small developing economies, one small
project at a time.
And like so many working moms, Mary has
excelled in her career and business while also
raising three beautiful children. From family
dinners, to soccer games, and to school
events, she’s juggled it all. Everyday she’s
blessed with the opportunity to show her
children that hard work and dedication leads
to success.
Mary is truly an extraordinary human being.
She is compassionate and selfless. She
volunteers her time with many charitable
organizations and is always involved in the
community. She has shown exemplary
initiative and leadership skills by raising
awareness and organizing numerous
fundraisers for humanity projects across the
globe. Her dedication and achievement have
been impressive and she has made
measurable impact by touching the lives of
others, particularly those who are vulnerable
or less able to help themselves. Mary has
inspired many to become more involved in the
community and she teaches us to live with
empathy with those around us in order to
make a positive change in the world. Her
Clean Water Project for India has brought relief
for thousands of villagers in many rural
communities. Byproviding clean water to poor
rural mountain villages in India, she has saved
many lives. She has built schools and is
currently working on a housing project in India.
Mary’s life has been filled with a mixture of
challenges and successes. But, above all,
she’s always chased her passions while
building a balanced life of financial success,
purpose, and helping others. She is a true
role model and inspiration to all men and
women within our community.

Tackling monkeypox
EVEN as India’s daily caseload

for the health authorities. - Reuters
file photo
EVEN as India’s daily caseload
of Covid-19 is hovering around 20,000,
the detection of a few cases of
monkeypox has presented a new challenge
for the health authorities. The
World Health Organisation has declared
the monkeypox outbreak a ‘public health
emergency of international concern’—
regarded as the highest level of alert.
More than 16,000 cases have been reported
from 70-odd countries and at
least five deaths have occurred so far.
Apparently having learnt a lesson from
the Covid pandemic, whose outbreak
was marked by chaos, confusion and
panic in the first half of 2020, India’s Ministry
of Health and Family Welfare issued
detailed guidelines for the management
of monkeypox as early as May 31 this
year, when no case had been reported
from the country. The ministry described
it as a ‘viral zoonotic disease with symptoms
similar to smallpox, although with
less clinical severity.’ It can spread
through both kinds of transmission —
human-to-human and animal-to-human.
A thorough epidemiological investigation
of the current cases will
throw more light on the disease and the
ways in which it can be controlled. Being
less contagious and rarely fatal,
monkeypox does not call for the ringing
of alarm bells. At the same time, there
is no room for complacency, considering
how rapidly diseases get transmitted
across our populous country. The
emphasis should be on round-the-clock
surveillance, along with prompt isolation
of the confirmed cases and keeping
their close contacts in quarantine.
The screening of international
travellers arriving in India had left a lot to
be desired during the early months of
the Covid pandemic. There should be
no laxity on this count now, even as it is
equally important to minimise disruptions
and ensure that passengers are
not harassed. With most of the infections
being reported from Europe, the
European Commission has approved a
smallpox vaccine for use against
monkeypox. India might have to take a
call on vaccination if the caseload
shoots up in the next few weeks. A calibrated,
data-driven response can prevent
the situation from spinning out of
control. Proactively countering misinformation
and providing transparency
would be no less vital for allaying
people’s fears.
