Dunbar is an abstract 

artist based in 

Charleston, South 

Carolina. She often 

thinks about painting in three 

dimensions, rather than two. When 

engaging with the surface, she 

considers how the arrangement and 

folds of the canvas will influence the 

composition. 

The process is as rooted in the 

physical construction of form as 

it is propelled by the medium’s 

inherent fluidity. The title of one of her 

exhibitions –Fluent Form– refers to 

the practice of exploring opposing 

concepts such as density, fragility, 

continuity, and impermanence within 

the same material. 

“As one progression leads to the 

next, I study the medium without 

premeditation, remaining sensitive 

to nuances within the process.” 

Says Marina. Natural elements 

such as dry pigments and sand are 

introduced in her paintings. 

Sand is a physical object, yet 

its existence is a representation 

of the passage of time. It is the 

result of rock erosion and it is a 

material that continually assembles 

into new patterns. In the Buddhist 

tradition, sand is used to convey 

beauty and ephemerality through 

the construction and subsequent 

destruction of mandalas. Using these 

themes as anchors of inspiration, the 

works evoke impressions of dunes, 

flora, and natural phenomena while 

departing from a faith fulrendering of 

reality. “The paintings and sculptures 

are a meditation on movement, time, 

and transformation.” Says Marina.

Dubai’s new metaverse strategy 

to add $4bn to the economy and create more than 

40,000 jobs 

Dubai is home to 1,000 

companies that 

work in the realm of 

the metaverse and 

contributes $500 million to 

the economy. By taking the initiative 

to prepare for the inevitable rise of 

the metaverse, the nation introduced 

its integrative plan to encourage 

users to use this service. 

Metaverse is a broad suite of 

technologies that improve and 

augment how parties and people 

interact and communicate. This 

network provides 3D virtual worlds 

that focus on bettering virtual 

communications using technologies 

like augmented reality (AR), virtual 

reality (VR), and blockchain to build 

spaces that provide a rich virtual 

experience for users. Metaverse 

allows for a more personalized online 

digital experience through avatars 

and interactions in the virtual world. 

This initiative will make the emirate 

one of the top 10 cities globally 

to shape the future of emerging 

technologies. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan 

added that the plan is to revolutionize 

the technological and economic 

fields to affect numerous aspects of 

life in the coming decades. 

The government aims to create 

40,000 jobs and add $4 billion to 

the national economy in the coming 

five years to boost its efforts to tap 

and harness the emerging interest 

in digital technologies and space. 

Dubai is already home to over 1000 

metaverse-based companies and 

wishes to increase that number 

five-fold and double the number 

of blockchain companies, with this 

initiative. 

The initiatives poise the UAE to ride 

on the wave of the global metaverse 

market is forecasted to exceed 

$1.6 billion by 2030, according 

to Canada-based Precedence 

Research. One such initiative is the 

action taken by the nation’s Ministry 

of State for Digital Economy, AI, and 

Remote Working System as they 

signed a preliminary agreement 

with Chainanalysis (blockchain data 

platform) to provide virtual training for 

His Highness Sheikh 

Hamdam tweeted, 

“Dubai was and will remain 

a precedent for others 

globally because H.H. 

Sheikh Mohammed bin 

Rashid has proven to the 

world over and over again 

the sense of his future and

Rusheel Sareen is an 

Australia based Indian 

Artist. As an artist and 

an absolute empath 

Rusheel truly believes 

in the statement that art is not 

always supposed to look nice but 

it is supposed to make you feel 

something. “Being an absolute 

empath, I try to channel the profound 

emotions I feel in life into my art with 

the intent of invoking positive feelings 

in others” says Rusheel. 

This is also why she sometimes 

combines her art process with 

soulful music to enhance this sense 

of feeling. Empaths will know, being 

one can be mentally and emotionally 

tiring says the artist. Creating art for 

her is a way to release the absorbed 

energy, the mental turmoil which 

comes from feeling things too 

profoundly. 

Although, being an empath 

also has many positives. It lets 

you experience high levels of 

compassion, consideration, loyalty 

and understanding towards others 

and situations. Therefore, when she 

creates art, she tries to channel these 

positive emotions I go through in life 

into the process of creating thereby 

embracing her sensitivity. “If I am 

going to feel something so deeply, 

why not let it be empowering and 

have a positive impact on myself and 

others” says Rusheel. 

For this reason, the biggest reward 

for me is when people say my 

artworks/process videos make them 

feel something, most often it is love, 

patience, freedom, and nostalgia 

states the artist. She also believes 

that art is not only something she 

loves to practice but something 

she needs to practice to thrive in 

life. Even though she is a full time 

Senior Data Analyst at a renowned 

telecommunications and technology 

company, she makes sure she has 

time to create.

“I love to travel and in my works, I reflect the beauty of the world 

around us” says Igor. 


The artist was born in 1972, 

Moscow, the capital of 

Russia. He still lives and 

works there. His paintings 

are characterized by the 

presence of light and their realist 

quality, transporting the viewer to 

different parts of the world. “I have no 

special education in Art, but it does 

not prevent me from loving art” 

says Igor. 

A great number of his paintings 

have scattered around the world 

and settled in private collections in 

England, America, Australia and 

Europe. Igor has participated in 

various exhibitions including 2018 Art 

Life international Art Festival Moscow 

and 2018 Exhibition in Museum of 

Russian Art. NY. USA. After the 

International Exhibition of Watercolors 

in Fabriano, Italy, his work was 

selected for the Fabriano Watercolor 

Museum. 

In the artist’s opinion the attitude 

to watercolor painting, has 

immensely changed recently. Igor 

uses special watercolor paper of 

leading European manufacturers 

for his works. The artist depicts the 

world around us in an exceptionally 

beautiful manner with his artworks 

that are usually oil painting or 

watercolours. 

His work can make people teleport 

from where they are to where they 

see in an instant. His works are 

focused on portraying the beauty of 

everyday places that we fail to 

notice normally.

London exhibition to examine 

surrealism’s 

influence on design 

Surrealism is the 

representation of a 

thought or an object as 

seen and understood 

by its creator. It is a 

20th-century art style born from 

the horrors of the first world war, as 

artists began to explore and express 

the subconscious mind. The art 

movement saw its golden days 

between the 1920s and the 1960s, 

after which the decline set in as 

original surrealists split into factions 

with different perspectives on the 

role of their art in society. Surrealists 

aim to celebrate abstract realism, 

an offbeat approach to art. With the 

onset of the second world war, a

Now, at the Design Museum in 

west London, Objects of Desire: 

Surrealism and Design 1924 - Today 

sets out to bring this art form to the 

modern date. This exhibition, set 

to open on the 14th of October will 

relive surrealism’s influence on the 

way the design world welcomed 

a revolution in art and design 

ranging from the decorative arts and 

furniture to more diverse creative 

elements such as interior, fashion, 

and photography and film making. 

The collection will have 

the visitors witness 

the works of other 

contemporaries such 

as Marcel Duchamp, 

Man Ray, Leonora 

Carrington, Sarah Lucas, 

musician Björk and 

fashion photographer 

Tim Walker. All in all, 

the displays will belong 

to the last 50 years of 

surrealism. 

The exhibition will also see the 

display of 350 objects including 

artworks by Dali, surrealism’s bestknown 

artist. The collection will 

have the visitors witness the works 

of other contemporaries such as 

Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Leonora 

Carrington, Sarah Lucas, musician 

Björk and fashion photographer 

Tim Walker. All in all, the displays 

will belong to the last 50 years of 

surrealism. 

Surrealists developed unique 

techniques to explore the theme 

through photography. Man Ray 

and Maurice Tabard dabbled in 

automatic writing, double exposure, 

and montages to express their 

perspectives. Numerous others 

used rotations of the lenses to 

capture unique and different lines of 

sight to develop ‘surreal’ images. 

The 350 exhibits will begin from 

surrealism’s early days in the 1920s 

and seek to understand its influence 

on daily objects. Namely Gae 

Aulenti’s Tour, a glass table for four 

supported by four bicycle wheels. 

On that tangent, Sella, a bicycle 

saddle/seat mounted on a post that 

extends from a hemispherical base 

created by the brothers Achille and 

Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, blurs the 

distinction between furniture and art. 

This exhibition aims to showcase 

that surrealism is “still alive and 

well and that it (surrealism) never 

went away”, as said by the curator 

of the exhibition Kathryn Johnson. 

Surrealism originated from the 

survivors of the horrors of the 

20th century, world wars, and 

influenza pandemic and art were a 

balancing agent away from these 

horrors. “Today, in the context of 

dizzying technological change, 

war, and another global pandemic, 

surrealism’s spirit feels more alive 

than ever in contemporary design,” 

says Kathryn as it drives home the 

very reason art exists… to give 

meaning when words fail.

Neha Sahai is a 36-yearold 

Indian artist who 

paints whimsical world 

of wildflowers, forests, 

and love stories. Her 

artworks based on love stories 

portray a whole story of such as a 

fish falling in love with a bird or a 

moth falling for a moon. 

She is a self-taught artist with a 

design degree, Neha started 

her journey of painting 

three years ago. Her 

painting journey began 

when realizing she has 

many stories to be told. 

“What could be a better 

medium than colors to 

express emotions” 

says Neha, colours 

are something that 

has fascinated 

her for as 

long as she 

remembered. 

Though her take on art is quite 

modern but her approach is rooted 

in her culture. Neha’s works are 

inspired from a tribal art form - 

“Gond art” where art tells a folklore 

and is articulated with different 

strokes of lines and dots. The bold 

use of colors in her artwork is also 

something very indigenous to her 

culture. 

Her artwork depicts unhurried, 

laid-back, non-mechanized 

world. It relates to an era 

where greater joys could 

be found in smaller things, 

like the smell of the earth, 

the beauty of wildflowers, the 

sound of laughter, the light of 

stars and the feeling of 

being wild and free.

culinary arts are the chefs or cooks. 

As an expert, one must know food 

sciences, nutrition, and diet to 

prepare meals that are visually 

pleasing and tasty to the palate. 

Seeing is believing and art has 

the ability to create something that 

demands your attention, respect, 

and imagination. Cooking is an

Ken Goshen is an NYCbased 

artist and educator 

with a background in 

classical painting and 

printmaking. “My passion 

is bringing together traditional 

techniques and a contemporary 

outlook.” Says Ken Goshen. His 

art explores the gap between 

conceptualized pictorial visions, and 

experiential sensory inputs. His work 

brings together traditional techniques 

and a contemporary outlook--evoking 

both a sense of nostalgia and an 

exhilaration of the unexplored. 

Goshen started his art education 

in his teens, studying at various 

institutions in both Israel and New 

York. He is an alumnus of the 

Classical Drawing and Painting 

Master Class program at Hatahana 

Studio for Figurative Drawing and 

Painting (2010 – 2013, Tel Aviv). He 

earned his BFA (with honors) in Fine 

Arts with a minor in Printmaking from 

Parsons School of Design (2013 – 

2017, NYC). Goshen works and lives 

in NY, and teaches painting and 

drawing to over 700 students from all 

over the world. 

“Understand that every painting 

is abstract, no matter how 

representational it is. Even the 

most realistic portrait is composed 

of shapes and colors” says Ken. 

When he was 5 Ken used to draw 

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for 

hours every day. In retrospect, 

it’s very appropriate that they are 

named after Renaissance artists. He 

transitioned from an illustrative style 

in his teens, to a classical style in his 

20s, and these days abstraction and 

eclecticism are gradually making 

their way into his work.

Meet Sarah Brahim, the Saudi artist that 

combines dance with visual arts 

Saudi artist Sarah 

Brahim is making 

waves with her 

multidisciplinary 

collaborative work. 

Ahead of her show at 

the Lyon Biennale 

in September, the 

Riyadh-based 

choreographer, 

dancer and artist 

discussed her 

contemporary 

art. Brahim, 30, 

has studied 

dance since she 

was just three 

years old, an 

education that 

she says was 

a fundamental 

preparation for 

her career as 

visual artist. 

“My 

background in dance allowed me to 

study the body in space, the body in 

motion and experiences of the body 

how the body fits into architecture, 

into music and into silence,” says 

the artist. Sarah calls herself a 

performance and visual artist. She 

studied, choreographed, performed, 

and taught jazz, contemporary, 

ballet, and tap dance. 

The artist has explored themes 

of loss, identity, borders, veiling, 

migration, the experiences of 

women of color and those of 

individuals living a transnational 

existence. Brahim has shown her 

work around the world, including 

in Italy, Saudi Arabia, the US, and 

the UK. In her most recent work, 

“Soft Machines/Far Away Engines” 

curated in 2021, commissioned 

for the first Diriyah Contemporary 

Biennale in Riyadh, screens showed 

individuals interacting with each 

other, moving, intertwining and 

embracing. 

The way Brahim worked with 

the technological framework that 

brought her work to the viewer, in 

addition to her sensitivity to how 

the body is used to present ideas, 

thoughts and emotion, revealed 

a singular vision of a world that 

is both intimately and ethereally 

interconnected. 

In the coming months, Brahim 

will show the same work at the 

Lyon Biennale, taking place from 

September 14 until December 31, 

which was originally slated to open 

in 2021. The pandemic-postponed 

edition, curated this year by duo 

Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, who 

have long worked with artists from 

the Arab world, tackles the idea of 

fragility. Sarah’s cyanotypes will also 

be displayed at different museums 

in Lyon.

Heart Surgery inspires art for central 

Queensland artist Gwyneth Terri Lewis. 

Central Queensland artist 

Gwyneth Terri Lewis’s 

experience with open 

heart surgery inspired 

the latest exhibition 

‘Road to Recovery’ at Fig Tree 

Galleries in Yeppoon and has 

already encouraged at least one 

art lover to take her heart health 

seriously. 

The exhibition came together 

while Gwyneth was waiting to have 

surgery and charts her physical and 

psychological journey through one 

of the most distressing times of her 

life. 

“This exhibition documents my 

artistic journey throughout this 

experience,” Gwyneth said. She 

was waiting to have her open-heart 

surgery, being a compulsive artist, 

she wasn’t going to let how bad she 

was feeling get in the way of being 

creative. 

“I kept a visual diary that was 

inspired by what I was experiencing 

each day including medical 

procedures, my body and my 

emotions. Each abstract artwork 

represents a time capsule of the 

impact my surgery had on my life 

and my artwork” says the artist. The 

one thing that she could not wait to 

get back to after my surgery was of 

course her art. 

“While each artwork has its own 

story, the body of work elicits an 

emotional response to my feelings 

and thoughts about before, during 

and after my surgery.” Gwyneth said 

during the first couple of days of 

the exhibition she came across an 

art lover who had forgotten to bring 

her glasses, it would be one act that 

may well have saved that ladies life. 

Gwyneth said awareness of 

women’s heart health is clearly a 

topic very close to her own heart. 

“Women tend to have different 

symptoms than men. There can be 

a shortness of breath, pain between 

the shoulder blades, tiredness, 

fatigue, palpitations and heartburn,” 

Gwyneth said. The artist said she 

hopes to take the exhibition to 

her hometown in Gladstone next 

where she wants to send the same 

message of looking after your 

heart health to as many people as 

possible. 

Having begun her artistic journey 

in her teens using the ground, 

leaves, rocks, pavement and things 

like feathers to make patterns due 

to a lack of money for art supplies 

in her family, Gwyneth was inspired 

in year 8 at high school by a 

dedicated teacher who was the first 

to introduce her to painting. 

She said that very teacher even 

purchased a couple of Gwyneth’s 

paintings which enabled her to 

purchase some art supplies to work 

with at home. 

“I began painting nature and 

birds. When I was young, I didn’t 

like abstract art at all, I didn’t 

understand it, now it is my passion 

and my obsession,” she said.

Oumaima Choua is a 

self-taught artist born in 

Netherlands. The artist 

comes from a Moroccan 

heritage and she was 

born in 1997. Her hyperrealistic 

portraits explore the psychology of 

her subjects by portraying them on 

large canvasses. 

The artist has crafted her style 

over many years, experimenting with 

shapes, textures, tones and different 

things using her preferred medium 

of graphite and charcoal. Oumaima 

uses her large scale works to evoke 

the emotions, thoughts and feelings 

of her subjects whilst capturing the 

essence of human experience. “It’s 

important to challenge yourself in 

order to keep growing learning and 

improving” says Oumaima. 

Her striking use of light tone to 

immortalize the figures in her work 

gives the artwork an ethereal quality. 

Often bare skinned and in dramatic 

poses, each work tells a story of not 

only the creative process but also 

the artist’s own connection with the 

figures she recreates. 

Oumaima Choua describes that 

drawing has been a part of her whole 

life. As a curious and observant 

youngster, she loved to explore the 

colours and shapes found in her 

surroundings owing to which her 

imagination would run wild on the 

blank pages. “When I draw, I lose 

track of time. And that’s one of the 

many reasons why I’m in love with 

what I do” says Oumaima. Her works 

are a limitless space in which she 

expresses her freedom and creativity, 

giving people stories and worlds 

where they can project their own 

experiences. 

As she continues to perfect her 

style, Oumaima has already debuted 

her work at the International Art Fair

Capturing the attention of a live 

audience for close to three hours 

requires just the right mix of soulful 

music and machination, with Salim 

setting the tone at the very start of 

the concert by belting out one of 

his biggest hits. Trivedi soon had 

her moment to shine, crooning her 

biggest hit. 

As we slipped into the second 

hour of the performances, Salman 

Ali the Indian Idol winner was 

brought out for his debut act in 

Dubai, with his powerful vocals 

elevating the mood of the night. 

As the mood distinctly changed in 

the arena, it was time to celebrate 

some inspiring Sufi Qawwali. 

As the minutes ticked by, 

knowing that the night was now 

heading towards its final act, Salim 

and Sulaiman wasted no time in 

bringing out their star singers for 

medley that electrified the night. 

Here were five award-winning 

performers, united in talent and 

their love for melodies, doing what 

they do best, reveling in the magic 

of music. 

As the night came to an end of 

the PME organized concert, it was 

with a musical high that many in the 

audience will take back with them 

as a memory to be cherished in 

years to come.

token (NFT) collection. 

The collection, known as 

EY-ZERO1, features 10 3D aircraft 

models, each showcasing a 

unique Etihad Airways Boeing 787 

Dreamliner livery. 

A total of 2003 limited-edition 

collectibles, symbolising the 

year when Etihad Airways was 

established, went on sale on July 

21 2022. The collectibles include 

Etihad’s Manchester City FC and 

Greenliner-themed aircraft,

International Youth Day 

International Youth Day is an awareness 

day designated by the United Nations. The purpose 

of the day is to draw attention to a given set of 

cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The first 

IYD was observed on 12 August, 2000. 

International Youth Day is observed annually 

on August 12th. It is meant as an opportunity for 

governments and others to draw attention to youth 

issues worldwide. During IYD, concerts, workshops, 

cultural events, and meetings involving national and 

local government officials and youth organizations take 

place around the world. IYD was designated by the 

United Nations in 1999. 

International Youth Day's Slogan for 2014 was Youth 

and Mental Health. For 2015, it was Youth and Civic 

Engagement. The theme of the 2016 International Youth 

Day was “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and 

Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production. 

For 2017, the theme of IYD is "Youth Building Peace". 

The theme for IYD 2018 was "Safe Spaces for Youth". In 

this way it will go on which recognises the contributions 

of young people to preventing conflict, supporting 

inclusion, social justice, and sustain peace. For 2019, 

the theme of IYD was "Transforming education" to make 

education inclusive and accessible for all youth. And 

for 2020, the theme of IYD was "Youth Engagement 

for Global Action". The theme for 2021 IYD was 

"Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for 

Human and Planetary Health". 

The objective of this year’s International Youth Day 

theme, Intergenerational solidarity: Creating a World 

for All Ages, is to amplify the message that action is 

needed across all generations to achieve the SDGs 

and leave no one behind.

Tatyana Graf is a Russian 

artist based in Dubai. She 

has been living in Dubai for 

the past 20 years. The artist 

says that the city’s desert landscapes 

and magnificent skyline that changes 

colour from time to time makes her 

feel like she is part of a fairy tale 

every time she looks at it. 

“I like to visualize the beauty 

around us and fix it as a memory 

of the moment for me but also for 

others which cannot join me in 

such moments” says Tatyana. Her 

works are inspired from classical 

masters and she has been trained by 

classical teachers. 

Tatyana has trained herself to do 

sculptural art in recent. She has 

taken this field to honors the ancient 

artists of the Greek and Romans 

high times and she considers this 

one of her biggest achievements in 

recent times. “I try to be as realistic 

as possible, still adding an artistic 

touch of imagination to my work” 

says Tatyana. 

She studied at the St. Petersburg 

Academy of Arts, one of the oldest 

art educational institutions in the 

world. In her work, Tatyana adheres 

to the principles of continuity of the 

best traditions of Russian and 

world art. 

Her paintings are made in a 

classical style and glorify the beauty 

of man and the world around 

him. Tatyana works a lot in the 

open air, filling her canvases with 

the freshness of sensations, the 

perception of nature at a particular 

moment in time.

Himani Khimji is a UAE based 

artist who was born and 

raised in South of India, 

in Chennai. She graduated with 

Bachelor of Science in Visual

Photography. 

Through her education and work, 

she has had the opportunity to live, 

study and work in cities like Jaipur, 

Mumbai, Muscat, London, Abu

and now she only practices Art. 

However, she is also an educator in 

international school settings. 

Himani is a visual artist and her 

preferred medium is watercolours 

and gouache. Although she uses 

acrylics, and inks as well, her 

work is largely inspired by nature. 

“I appreciate and believe that 

everything that we are surrounded 

by is inspired and comes from 

nature” says Himani. 

The artist states that the colours 

we enjoy, the clean air that we like 

to breathe, the freshness that plants 

bring into the house or outdoors, 

the joy that the flowers bring is all 

a part of nature and I appreciate 

nature and that is reflected in my 

artworks. 

Through years of practice, she 

has eveloped her own style. “I 

ensure that there is some element 

of nature in most of my work and 

it just comes to me very naturally 

appreciate

Zak Eazy is a 26-yearold 

digital artist out of 

Lille, France, inspired by 

the renowned Spanish 

surrealist Salvador Dalli. 

His works of digital sceneries of 

the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab. 

have garnered attention online with 

his surreal take on the architectural 

beauty of Dubai’s buildings. 

@zakeazy, his Instagram account 

received praises for his recent 

posts featuring the Dubai 

Frame and Atlantis, The Palm. 

Eazy also has in the workings 

four more artworks featuring the 

architectural beauty of Dubai and 

its extent of development. He has 

sights on the Museum of the Future, 

the world’s largest observation wheel 

Ain Dubai, the Al Seef neighborhood, 

and the Sheikh Zayed Grand 

Mosque in Abu Dhabi. 

“Through the Dubai Frame, you 

can see the old and the new Dubai. 

That’s why I used this monument 

because it’s an analogy between 

life before and after, life before 

opportunity, and life after opportunity. 

I used dolphins to represent anybody 

in the world because there are 

opportunities for everyone in Dubai. 

No matter your race or color of your 

skin, you will manage to swim like a 

dolphin in the water if you manage to 

take the opportunity.” Says Zak.

Right now, Eazy is working towards 

his first exhibition. 

To any artist, the final prize is to 

see how people understand and 

perceive your artwork. On that 

note, Easy says something that will 

resonate with the artist in us all. 

“I love to see [the] reactions of 

people because they interpret the 

art in their way. Some view my art 

as fantastic and magical, and some 

see it as the apocalypse and life after 

human extinction,” he says. “I have 

my meaning but people are free to 

interpret it according to what they 

see, according to their experiences. 

And this is what I like the most.”

Chien Chung-Wei was 

born in 1968 and 

earned the master 

degree in Fine Arts, 

National Taiwan Normal 

University. Over the years, he has 

won many awards in international 

competitions. In addition, he is the 

first artist in Taiwan to become a 

signature member and Dolphin 

Fellowship of the American 

Watercolor Society. He now teaches 

watercolor in Taiwan and has 

been invited to instruct watercolor 

workshops worldwide. 

The watercolor works of Chien 

Chung-Wei appear to embrace 

the spirits and temperament of the 

Western watercolor masters over 

the last two centuries. By age 32, 

his works tended to be delicate and 

classic and were reminiscent of the 

works of William Henry Hunt and 

Myles Birket Foster. After that, he 

gradually focused on the expression 

of the essence of watercolors.

great watercolor masters, such as

in his works. In the meantime, he 

also broke the boundary between 

watercolors and oil paints. He 

created a series of works using 

watercolors and gouache and looked 

like the Romantic oil paintings in the 

19th century. 

Those works totally changed 

the conventional impression of 

watercolors. His works are temperant 

and classic in colors with masterful 

brushstrokes, which endow every 

character with a rich fullness. He 

creates the beauty and intrigue of 

form even with ordinary subjects, 

and that’s the enchantment of his 

watercolors. In the trend of the 

contemporary art, Chien Chung-Wei 

enjoys the popularity in recent years. 

This seems to let us reconsider the 

pictorial value of the classic spirit in

An X-Ray Reveals What May Have Been 

Van Gogh’s First-Ever 

Self-Portrait 

The conservators at the 

National Galleries of 

Scotland were in for a 

surprise as they began 

their cataloging process 

for the Peasant Woman, painted 

by the world-famous Van Gogh. 

Conservators found a self-portrait 

of Vincent Van Gogh underneath 

the oil painting of The Peasant 

Woman during a routine X-Ray test. 

Art scholars have only far been 

aware of his self-portraits as old as 

1886, when he moved to Paris and 

discovered Impressionism. 

The Peasant Woman was painted 

in 1885, which indicates the 

X-ray findings point to an earlier 

composition of a self-portrait by Van 

Gogh. The Peasant Woman was 

composed above the unfinished 

self-portrait, which reminds us of 

Van Gogh’s financial struggle as 

a starved artist. Analyzing the art 

further, it appears to be part of a 

group of five other self-depictions, 

part of the collection of the Van 

Gogh Museum in the Netherlands 

that he would go on to compose. 

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a 

Dutch-born artist credited with the 

unique brush style he developed 

as he moved to Paris. The choice 

of clear brush marks is due to 

his impressionistic influence 

in his approach to art, which 

aptly complements his raw and 

emotional theme of works. 

This finding has a certain beauty 

to it, as this helps us realize 

more about the type of life the 

artist would have led in the late 

19th century. The artist is often 

referred to as an excellent artist 

in the realistic genre and is wellremembered 

for how Impressionism

another dimension to the artist's life,

The yearly celebration of

is known as World 

Photography Day. This 

year’s World Photography Day will 

occur on August 19, 2022, on a 

Friday. 

On August 19, 2010, the 

first World Photography Day 

was celebrated. On this day, 

approximately 270 photographers 

uploaded their images to an 

international web collection. The 

online gallery was seen by visitors 

from more than 100 nations. The 

first-ever World Photography 

Day was commemorated on this 

occasion. The day is celebrated 

on August 19th since that was 

the day in 1839 when the French 

government bought the patent 

for the Daguerreotype method. 

The Daguerreotype method 

was introduced, and the French 

government referred to it as a free 

gift to the world. 

The earliest known instance of 

photography is from 1839. The 

Daguerreotype procedure was then 

announced by the French Academy 

of Sciences. The procedure allowed 

for the creation of an extremely 

detailed image on a copper sheet. 

The procedure did not involve the 

use of a negative and involved 

coating the sheet with a thin layer of 

silver. It became the first technique 

for making a camera image 

permanent.

will have the subject "Pandemic

Who Were Ahead 

Of Their Time 

Nearly 200 years ago, two new methods of 

image-making debuted within weeks of each 

other in 1839: the daguerreotype, directpositive 

photographs where images were 

burned directly onto silver-plated copper 

plate, in France and the calotype, the original 

photographic negative in the form of silver 

chloride–sensitized paper, in England. 

Together, their inventions by men who held the patents and usually also restricted access to the equipment 

necessary to make them hail the inception of photography. 

Nonetheless, women have been professional photographers and among the medium’s fiercest innovators since 

its invention, though, their names, contributions, and work tend to be lesser known, like Bertha Beckman, 

famous for being the first-ever professional woman photographer. 

Below, a look at seven groundbreaking women photographers whose work is seeing renewed exposure. 

BERNARDINE CAROLINE THÉODORA 

HIRZA LEJEUNE 

Lejeune’s role in creating photographs, by fixing images onto silvered copper 

plates, wasn’t easy to discover, as her works weren’t directly attributed to 

her by name. She worked under the name of the studio that she cofounded 

with her husband, Jean Louis Bargignac. It was called Leba, an acronym 

combining the first two letters of her last name with those of her husband’s 

surname. Leba was a prominent daguerreotype and photography studio in 

Brussels in the 1850s, producing portraits such as this 1853 likeness of a 

man in an impressive shoulder-tasseled uniform. 

HELENE MAGDALENA 

HOFMANN 

After studying photography in Munich as a 

teenager, Bavarian photographer Helene 

Magdalena Hofmann opened an eponymous 

shop when she moved to Gorizia in 1901. In 

that northern Italian town bordering Slovenia, 

she bought a photography studio on 32 Corso 

Francesco Giuseppe that had belonged to 

photographer Arthur Floeck, and established 

herself as a portrait photographer. Hofmann 

also specialized in photographing tableaux 

vivants, such as this one of three men waving 

their bowler hats at some imaginary person off 

in the distance.

EDITH ARNALDI (ALSO KNOWN AS 

ROSA ROSÀ) 

Edith Arnaldi is well known for her feminist and Futurist writing, but her 

photographs, produced between 1933 and 1954, still remain grossly 

underrecognized. (She’s also better known by her pen name, Rosa Rosà, which 

she adopted in 1908 when she moved from Vienna to Italy.) But away from her 

desk, Arnaldi was an active photographer who experimented with a wide range of 

formats including infrared photography, color film, and night photography. 

WANDA AND MARION WULZ 

Photography was a family legacy for Trieste-born Wulz 

sisters, Wanda and Marion, who were introduced to the 

medium by their father Carlo. Carlo urged his daughters 

to be photographers even though they were interested in 

other creative outlets—Wanda in playing piano, Marion 

painting. When their father died in 1928, the sisters fully 

committed to operating the portrait studio he left them, 

though their images were more experimental in form, and 

they transformed the family workshop at Palazzo Hirschl 

into a hangout for the day’s artists, writers, and musicians. 

MARION POST WOLCOTT 

During the Great Depression, the images of struggling 

Americans commissioned by the New Deal agency Farm 

Security Administration became iconic visual messages 

advocating for change. Those taken by Walker Evans and 

Dorothea Lange of poverty-stricken migrants and those 

deeply impacted by the economic crisis are the program’s 

best-known products, but the over 9,000 photographs 

produced by Marion Post Wolcott (the only other female 

photographer hired by the FSA in the 1930s) are insightfully 

fueled by her personal interest in social activism.

a landscape, Reyes’ chooses his 

subjects carefully. 

His works focus on intimate dramas, 

revealing brief moments of unnoticed 

grandeur, tender souls grappling with 

the pressures of modern life. These 

sensitive portrayals are the result 

of careful observation along with 

intimate knowledge of his subjects, 

and are executed with finesse and 

virtuosity. His landscapes and still 

lives are imbued with implied narrative 

and hidden meaning, and a highly 

personal symbolic language born of 

the artist’s experience growing up in 

the Western United States, as the son 

of immigrant parents. “I have always 

been moved by the human capacity 

to love, dream, and persevere, with 

great courage and sincerity, in spite 

of what can seem like a vast and 

un-sympathetic Nature.” Says Julio 

At the age of 28, Julio won Best in 

Show, in the 2010 ARC Annual 

Salon Competition, the Art 

Renewal Center’s top honor. 

In 2011, Reyes had his 

debut solo exhibition at 

Arcadia Contemporary 

in New York City. 

The following 

year he won the 

prestigious William 

F. Draper Grand 

Prize at the Portrait 

Society of America’s 

2012 Annual Portrait 

Competition, making 

him one of only two artists to have 

won the highest honor at both major

Louvre Abu Dhabi celebrates 

its fifth anniversary with new cultural 

exhibits. 

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is 

set to celebrate its 5th 

anniversary this November 

with three new exhibits 

as part of its 2022 - 2023 

cultural season. 

This anniversary involves the 

region’s first-ever Impressionist 

exhibition, Impressionism: Pathway 

to Modernity, and artwork of 

selected artists for the Richard Mille 

Art Prize in November. In January 

2023, the museum will feature a 

Bollywood Superstars exhibition. 

The Louvre Abu Dhabi seeks 

to celebrate the stories of culture, 

explore connections and find 

commonalities between international 

visitors through art that transcends 

the boundaries of cultures, 

geographies, and time. 

The Impressionist exhibition, 

Impressionism: Pathway to 

Modernity will run from the 12th 

of October, 2022, to the 5th of 

February, 2023. This exhibition 

explores the key moments 

of this artistic movement that 

began in Paris in the 1860s and 

how it revolutionized the way of 

perceiving and painting the world. 

This exhibition is curated by 

Sylvie Patry, the chief curator and 

deputy director for collections and

saw the birth of a new world with 

changes in society and economy. 

During the museum’s fifth 

anniversary celebrations, the Louvre 

Abu Dhabi and Swiss watchmaking 

brand Richard Mille will hold the 

second edition of the Louvre Abu 

Dhabi Art Here 2022 exhibition and 

the Richard Mille Art Prize from 

November 2022 to February 2023. 

Art Here 2022’s entries are asked 

to examine the concept of the icon 

percolates within contemporary 

art practices and to inform on new 

artistic perspectives. The theme 

is to understand the distinction 

between an icon, which is an 

object, an image, or a symbol, and 

what it means to be iconic. Artists 

participating are encouraged to use 

icons to reignite the effect known as 

iconic. 

This year, the exhibition will 

welcome entries from contemporary 

artists based in the United Arab 

Emirates and across the Gulf 

Cooperation Council (Saudi Arabia, 

Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, 

Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman), both 

citizens and residents. The selected 

artists’ work will be showcased 

at the museum’s Forum. This 

space dedicated to celebrating 

contemporary art will be curated by 

Reem Fadda, director of the Cultural 

Foundation. 

Overall, this collaboration is a 

meaningful platform for artists in the

Now, on to the Bollywood 

Superstars exhibition that will 

open on the 25tth of January 

2023, and run until the 4th of June, 

2023. The exhibition is curated in 

partnership with Musée du quai 

Branly – Jacques Chirac and 

France Muséums, and co-curated 

by Julien Rousseau, curator of 

the Asian Collection at Musée du 

quai Branly – Jacques Chirac with 

Hélène Kessous, anthropologist and 

specialist of South Asian cinema. 

The exhibition will explore and 

present the cultural richness of 

the Indian subcontinent’s art and 

diverse society through its longstanding 

tradition of filmmaking. 

India produces over 1,500 films 

exported through Asia, Africa, 

and the Middle East in 20 different 

languages. The exhibition that 

will run for six months explores 

the history of Indian cinema from 

its humble beginnings in the late 

19th century to the present. The 

exhibition explores the history of 

Indian cinema from its birth in the 

late 19th century to the present. 

Finally, coming to the final 

event on the docket as the 

Louvre Abu Dhabi celebrates 

its fifth anniversary, it will host a 

month-long festival with a packed 

cultural programming calendar. 

The festival will complement the 

ongoing programs on the latest 

additions, exhibitions and feature 

talks, concerts, performances, 

film screenings, workshops, 

and more. The highlight of this 

grandiose celebration will be 

a dance performance inspired 

by Impressionism: Pathways to 

Modernity, and an immersive theater 

experience based on the Bollywood 

Superstars exhibition.

Guggenheim 

Museum Bilbao 

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum of 

modern and contemporary art designed by Canadian- 

American architect Frank Gehry, and located 

in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. 

This museum was inaugurated on 18 October 1997 

by King Juan Carlos I of Spain, with an exhibition of 

250 contemporary works of art. 

When the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened to 

the public in 1997, it was immediately hailed as one 

of the world's most spectacular buildings in the style 

of Deconstructivism 

The museum building was most frequently named 

as one of the most important works completed since 

1980 in the 2010 World Architecture Survey among 

architecture experts.

Arts Reina Sofía 

Queen Sofía Palace of the Arts is the last 

major structure built of a grand City of Arts and 

Sciences concept designed by the Valencia-born and 

internationally known architect Santiago Calatrava. 

The building rises 14 stories above ground and 

includes three stories below ground. Its height is 75 

meters (246 ft), being the tallest opera house in the 

world. 

The building was constructed by a joint venture 

of Dragados and Necso and It was opened officially 

on 8 October 2005 by Queen Sofía of Spain.
