My Retirement Travels ~ Liz Ross
My parents travelled extensively in
their later years. My father volunteered
with the organization CESO that took
them to Guatemala, Kenya, Sri Lanka
and Peru after he retired
and, since my mother
was a piano teacher, they
attended ISME conferences
in Australia, Poland,
the Czech Republic and
Finland as well as visiting
many other countries as
tourists. I inherited a love
of travel from them and
now my daughter has
travelled extensively and
has lived in Vietnam for
the last 8 years, which has
provided me with the opportunity
to see much of
Asia that I wouldn’t have
experienced otherwise.
I never did the backpacking
around Europe trip
in my 20’s like many did
and waited until I was
close to 60 before I travelled
overseas. To date, I
have visited 46 countries
and there are still more
I want to see. Covid has
put a damper on my travels
for the past 3 years but I hope to
start again soon. The January 2008
edition of the Smithsonian magazine
contained a life list entitled “28 places
to see before you die” which I adopted
as my own and I have checked off 20
of them so far since then! The places
that have “taken my breath away”
were Petra-Jordan, Easter Island-Chile,
Machu Picchu-Peru, hot air ballooning
in Cappadocia, Turkey; the Galapagos
Islands-Ecuador and Gaudi’s Sagrada
Familia Church-Barcelona, Spain. In
subsequent articles, I will explain what
Dahab Market, Egypt
it was about each of these places that
I found to be so special.
