There are possible
side effects
to medical cannabis,
just as they
Terese Bowors are with many
pharmaceuticals.
Though none are lethal or toxic, they
can be uncomfortable. A little awareness
and preparation can go a long
way in reducing discomfort.
Some side effects can be a result of
your body adapting to cannabis - especially
if you are a new consumer.
You may feel dizzy or tired when you
first start cannabis. If you are already
at a low dose, maintain the dose for a
few days and see if your body adapts
and these effects go away. If not, then
reduce your dose - especially of THC -
and take it slower.
The most common side effects of
THC include: dry mouth, dizziness,
sleepiness, rapid heartbeat, red eyes,
coughing, anxiety, paranoia, vomiting,
decreased blood pressure, feeling
high, increased appetite,
short term memory disruption.
CBD is found to be quite
safe with very few side
effects including: diarrhea,
dizziness, sleepiness
and reduced appetite.
You may be surprised to learn
that these effects aren’t pages
long and that some of them may
even be desirable to you in your situation.
For example, you may want
to decrease your blood pressure, fall
asleep, reduce or increase your appetite.
Not all side effects are unwanted,
though all of them are non-life threatening.
One of the main side effects preventing
us from trying cannabis is the
possibility for an unintended high.
This is not life threatening, but can
be uncomfortable. A high may feel
like dizziness, increased heart rate,
altered perception of time, distorted
response to touch,
sights and sounds,
difficulty thinking
or problem solving.
Edibles are the
most common and
easiest method of
experiencing an
unwanted high.
This is often due to
not knowing the
dose, taking more
because it’s yummy
or not waiting long
enough for the
effects to kick in
and dosing again.
Be aware!
Remain calm and
breathe, this is not
life threatening.
Hydrate with water.
Invite someone to
be with you.
peppercorns.
Take some CBD to
help calm down the
THC high. Eat a light
snack. Chew on black
Watch a funny show - you may find
THC enhances your appreciation for
humor!
Relax, breath, it will pass.
The high will begin to subside within
a few hours up to the next day - depending
on your ingestion method
and dose. Make a mental note for
next time on what changes you will
make to your dosing.
Be aware of drug interactions with
both THC and CBD. Drugs that have
warnings about grapefruit may also
have interactions with cannabis. Consult
with your doctor before starting
your cannabis regime, especially if
you have a history of mental illness,
heart disease or immune disorders. If
your doctor is not familiar with medical
cannabis, find a reputable cannabis
coach as your guide.
