DARWIN'S

EXPRESSION - A

GUIDED GROUP

INTRODUCING A

SCIENTIFIC

CLASSIC

14th, 15th and 16th November

6pm-7pm

£15

After successfully quizzing our way virtually through the

pandemic, we are bringing the Science Festival Quiz back

into the Courthouse. We'll also be serving fish ‘n’ chips or

veggie lasagne from Otley’s Maypole Fisheries in the

interval. To avoid disappointment, book your table early.

Each team can have a maximum of 6 members.

Why do we cry when we feel sad, tense up when we feel

angry, blush when we feel embarrassed? In Charles

Darwin's extraordinary book, ‘The Expression of the

Emotions in Man and Animals’, published 150 years ago

this year, he sought to answer these questions and more.

Led by Gregory Radick, Professor of History and

Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds, this

guided reading will discuss key chapters from the book to

explore how Darwin turned our emotional expressions into

evidence for human evolution.

The Earth is warming, with present and future changes in

our climate being of global concern.

Occurring before humans inhibited the Earth, these often

dramatic and rapid changes in climate were driven by a

range of natural processes, controlling the habitability of

our planet and its associated biodiversity. In this talk we

will look at the geological record of climate change, how

these changes impacted life on Earth, and how this can

help us better understand our present and future climate.

At our Science Cafe, each speaker has a quarter of an hour

to talk, then you, the audience take over. Whether you want

to grill a speaker about generalities or pose a particular

problem, the floor is yours to ask the questions. Our cafe is

the place to sample new ideas as well as something from

the bar!
