T C M Y CM MY CY CMY K There are presets in the four ride modes, Urban, Explore, Off-road, and Individual and a simple switch next to the right grip allows easy scrolling between them. Explore and Urban are street-focused ride modes, with ABS activated at both wheels. Explore offers more aggressive throttle response and less traction control intervention than Urban. Off Road provides the softest power delivery and ABS can be disabled at the rear wheel or switched off entirely. Individual gives you the choice to set the bike up as you wish and importantly, the bike remembers and stores it all. The TFT dashboard where all of this is displayed is clear and easy to read even in the bright sunshine. That engine is mated to a fairly big chassis. But it’s not bulky. Its comfortable and well thought out for riders of all sizes and it has a bigger bike feel to it. Its tubular-steel frame has cast swingarm plates, welded up as a single unit with the rear subframe. The engine is a stressed member of the frame with six mounting points, creating a rigid chassis to meet the demands of off-road riding. The engine is rotated back by 10 degrees. The 21 inch and 18 inch tubeless wheels tell you that they mean business. They are bolted on to fully adjustable suspension by Kayaba, with 43mm inverted forks and a piggyback rear shock with a progressive linkage, and there’s 9.5 inches of travel at both ends. Ergonomically it’s great, we have a big cross section of riders from Sean who is tall like a giraffe, to Stefan who is one of the smallest guys in town. Everyone fits and has nothing but compliments about the comfort, standing in the dirt or sitting on the freeways. And even though the screen is not adjustable it does a great job for a bike like this. It’s pretty too, just have a look. The Italians do make beautiful things. They missed some tricks in our opinion. There’s no sign of any kind of carrier or tie down points. On an ADV bike? Maybe there is one as an optional extra. We have seen luggage options too, so chat to the boys at Aprilia. Also, although it has rear pegs, there is nowhere for a pillion to hold on to. They have, however included a neat recess where you can grab the rear frame if you need to muscle the bike around. You have to pay extra for the privilege of using the quick shifter and the Bluetooth system for your phone. They have taken cues from some of the other European manufacturers. For the rest, Aprilia really has delivered a serious dose of fun to the Adventure market. Road or dirt, the bike is quite simply brilliant. The range seems good too, we rode the 60 KM’s odd from Aprilia Bryanston to our base, filled her 18 and a bit liter tank and returned her with 400 KM’s extra on the clock without refueling. The average consumption we saw according to the onboard system was 5 liters per 100 KM’s. Sean shares his thoughts: Gooood Golly Miss Molly!!!!! Smack me sideways seven ways from Sunday, WTF is happening to this world and the out of control inflation? Just glancing through our buyers guide there are a number of similarly or even better priced options with bigger, more powerful mills that are significantly better kitted out as standard…. The Tuareg really has to be something special to justify the ticket price.
