YOUR SLEEVES UP AND APPROACH THINGS HEAD ON. 

Last Saturday, at Vale Park, things 

certainly went against us. Having 

to play against an extra player for 

more than half the game in that 

searing heat would have seen 

many teams wilt. But not us. I was 

super proud of how we went about 

things. I’m more proud of that point 

against Port Vale than I was of the 

Salford or Wycombe wins. If this 

side starts fighting like then the 

rest of the league will be watching 

over their shoulders. 

I was baffled by Rico’s sending off 

if I’m honest. But I’ve already said 

what I need to say on that. It won’t 

do any good dwelling on it. 

It was a shame because I know 

that if it was 11 v 11 for the full game 

then we would have blown our 

opponents away. 

But in the end we had to make 

sure we got that point - and that 

we certainly did. I thought our 

defending was determined right 

down to the last minute but we 

also created chances to come 

away with a win. 

Like I said, that performance told 

me a lot about the players we have 

and the pride and passion they 

play with when wearing the Bolton 

Wanderers shirt. 

Again, we were backed superbly 

by more than 3,000 of you. The 

atmosphere you generated was

stirring throughout and I am sure 

you will be as proud of the lads as 

I was. 

Games are coming thick and 

fast and tonight we welcome 

Morecambe who will be looking 

to establish themselves in League 

One after getting promoted with us 

two seasons ago. 

It will be another test for us and I 

know that we will have to dig deep 

and show that fighting spirit if we 

are to come away with a result. 

I am delighted that our reward for 

beating Salford City in the Carabao 

Cup is a home tie against Aston 

Villa in the next round. 

Villa are one of the giants of the 

game and a night under the lights 

at a packed University of Bolton 

Stadium later this month will be 

something special for us all. 

I want to make it clear that we 

want to go as far as we can in 

this competition and this will be 

an opportunity to test ourselves 

against a top flight side. 

But first we’ve got some league 

games that we must endeavor to 

take maximum points from. 

And that is what we will be aiming 

to do tonight.

Wanderers registered an emphatic victory against 

League Two promotion hopefuls Salford City to 

secure a passage through to Round Two of the 

Carabao Cup. 

Despite falling behind to Brandon Thomas-Asante’s 

clinical finish, Ian Evatt’s men responded quickly 

through Elias Kachunga’s headed equaliser after 

latching onto Kieran Lee’s cross. 

Jón Daði Böðvarsson then capped a 31-pass move 

to put Wanderers in front before the break and 

Kieran Sadlier’s deflected effort from 25 yards gave 

the Whites a two-goal cushion. 

Conor Bradley scored a wonder goal before fellow 

substitute Dapo Afolayan added a fifth late on to 

confirm an impressive final scoreline to match the 

performance, taking the goal tally to 8 goals in two 

home matches this season.

The son of former England, Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers winger 

Stuart Ripley, Connor joined Morecambe in the summer from North West 

neighbours Preston North End. 

Coming through the ranks at hometown club Middlesbrough, he made 

just three appearances for the club before loan stints with the likes 

of Motherwell, Oldham Athletic, Bury, and Accrington Stanley. Joining 

Preston North End in 2019, the former England U20 stopper made 10 

appearances for the Lilywhites before a move to the Mazuma Stadium. 

CENTRE BACK | RYAN DELANEY 

AGE: 25 | PREVIOUS CLUB: BOLTON WANDERERS 

Former Bolton Wanderers defender Ryan Delaney has started the season 

well for Morecambe and has been a regular in the heart of the Shrimps’ 

defence alongside Farrend Rawson in the early weeks of the 2022/23 

campaign. 

Coming through at his hometown club Wexford, the former Republic of Ireland 

U21 joined Burton Albion in 2016. But, after never making an appearance for 

the Brewers, he joined Rochdale in 2018. Brought to the University of Bolton 

Stadium by Keith Hill in 2020, he made a total of 27 appearances (3 goals) for 

the club before signing for Morecambe in June 2021. 

CENTRE MIDFIELDER | OUSMANE FANÉ 

AGE: 28 | PREVIOUS CLUB: UITM 

Although a well-travelled midfielder who has played his football across the 

globe at intervals during his career, the Parisian is familiar with the English 

game following previous spells with Kidderminster Harriers, Oldham Athletic, 

and Shrewsbury Town. 

Starting out in France with the likes of Bayonne, Paris FC, Racing Paris, and 

GSI Pontivy, he had a brief spell in Norway with Lyn before his first move to 

England with Kidderminster Harriers in 2016. Returning to England to sign for 

Morecambe in February 2022, Fané’s move came following spells playing 

football in Malaysia and Indonesia with UiTM and Persiraja Banda Aceh. 

STRIKER | COLE STOCKTON 

AGE: 28 | PREVIOUS CLUB: TRANMERE ROVERS 

Enjoying the best season of his career to date in 2021/22, Stockton 

managed an impressive 26 goals in 50 appearances for the Shrimps – 

playing an influential role in the club’s survival in League One. 

The Huyton-born frontman started out with Tranmere Rovers in 2012 and 

remained at Prenton Park until a move to Hearts in 2017. A brief spell at 

Carlisle United followed before a return to Tranmere Rovers in 2018, and 

since his move to Morecambe in 2019, he has scored 47 goals in 137 

appearances.

THE BOSS… 

Returning to Morecambe in February after an unsuccessful seven month 

spell at Bradford City, Adams guided the Shrimps to League One survival 

in their first ever season in the third tier having been in charge to take 

the club up from League Two at the climax of the 2020/21 campaign. 

The former midfielder spent the vast majority of his playing career in 

Scotland, with the likes of Ross County, Motherwell, and Aberdeen and 

he played his last match whilst operating as a Player-Coach at Ross 

County in 2007. 

Joining Hibernian as assistant manager to Colin Calderwood, Adams 

returned to Ross County in 2011 as manager and remained at the 

club until earning a move to England to take over at Plymouth Argyle. 

Relieved of his duties in April 2019, the Scot took over at Morecambe 

later in the year and would go onto guide the Lancashire club to an 

historic promotion to League One via the play-offs.

has now served the club in 

different guises for over fifty 

years.

SIMON MARLAND… 

A familiar face in the corporate 

area, as a player, he began as 

an apprentice at Carlisle before 

joining Blackpool, making his 

League debut in the First Division 

at 18 years old. 

He became Jimmy Armfield’s first 

signing in the summer of 1971 for a 

fee of £4000 and became known 

as Mr Versatility as he went on to 

play in every position apart from 

goalkeeper for the Wanderers. 

He was a member of the club’s 

Third Division Championship 

side in 1973 and Second Division 

Championship side of 1978. 

He played 370 games for the 

Club over a ten year period and 

in October 1982 was granted a 

testimonial which saw a Peter 

Nicholson 1978 XI take on the 

clubs 1982/83 side. The game saw 

the return of Frank Worthington 

whilst George Best also appeared 

as a guest. 

His last game for the Club 

came in 1982 and he ended his 

League career with Rochdale. He 

continued with the Wanderers, 

assisting the youth team and 

coaching in the Academy whilst 

also taking on roles in the 

commercial department. He now is 

a regular at the University of Bolton 

Stadium on a match day whilst also 

still enjoying golf where he plays 

off seven. 

NOWHERE LIKE HOME. 

A win in the first home League 

game of the season doesn’t 

necessarily define a season but, 

with only one success in the 

previous nine seasons here at the 

University of Bolton Stadium, it 

was more than pleasing to secure 

the points with a magnificent 

performance against Wycombe. 

The only other success in the first 

home League game of the season 

going back to 2013 came in 2016 

when a Jay Spearing goal secured 

the points against Sheffield United.

AARON MORLEY WASN’T BORN WHEN WANDERERS MOVED INTO THE 

UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM. 

And he was just two when the 

Whites celebrated their 125th 

anniversary with the special 

one-off shirt they wore against 

Fulham five-and-a-half years later 

in January 2003. 

The history of the club and its 

current home isn’t lost on the 

midfielder, though, as he recalls 

the impact the stadium had on his 

formative years. 

“When I was growing up Bolton 

were in the Premier League, so it 

was always the biggest stadium 

around here,” said Morley, who 

donned the aforementioned 

anniversary jersey for tonight’s 

‘The Wanderer’ cover shoot as we 

continue to mark 25 years since relocating 

from Burnden Park . 

“It was always like a dream to play 

here. It was amazing driving past 

and thinking ‘hopefully one day I 

can play there’.” 

That chance might have come 

earlier than it did after Morley 

spent time with the Whites as he 

moved into his teens. 

The Bury-born hopeful had begun 

at Manchester City before joining 

Wanderers’ Academy. 

It proved to be a false start with 

Morley moving on to Rochdale 

where he served his scholarship 

and first became a professional 

player. 

But having moved back to the 

Whites last January with 120 firstteam 

appearances under his belt 

he certainly looks at home now as 

a key part of Ian Evatt’s side. 

“When I was 13 and getting that 

contract for a year it was like ‘this 

is where I want to be’,” recalled 

Morley. 

“It didn’t work out that time but I’m 

back now and it’s turned out how I 

hoped it would. 

“All the staff and everyone behind 

the scenes are amazing and 

hopefully we can get the club back 

to be a Premier League club.” 

That may still a bit off but 

Wanderers are determined to 

mount a challenge in League One 

this season to continue their climb 

back up the divisions under Evatt. 

“Our aim is to try and get promoted 

– nothing less, so hopefully we 

can keep the momentum going 

and kick on for the season,” said 

Morley. 

He and the team certainly made 

a positive start with an openingday 

draw at Ipswich followed by a 

superb 3-0 win over last season’s 

beaten play-off finalists Wycombe 

Wanderers in the first home game 

of the campaign. 

Wanderers had never taken a point 

from Wycombe – or scored a goal 

in their four previous meetings – 

but the Chairboys faced a different 

proposition this time around. 

“Every player put in a 100 per cent. 

We were brave in possession 

and closed them down with a lot 

of intensity and I don’t think they 

could deal with us. 

“As soon as we got the ball back 

we broke quickly and it resulted in

a very good game for us,” added 

Morley, who put the Whites in 

control before half-time with his 

first goal at the University of Bolton 

Stadium, a coolly-taken effort that 

epitomised his confidence and 

comfort on the ball. 

“It’s amazing listening to the crowd 

chant your name. It was my first 

goal here and hopefully I can put in 

many more.” 

Morley’s goal, in between a double 

from midfield colleague Kyle 

Dempsey, made it two in two for 

Morley after he scored from the 

penalty spot at Portman Road. 

And having also converted from 12 

yards in a pre-season friendly at 

Carlisle last month, the penaltytaker’s 

job appears to be his. 

“Hopefully I can hang onto that. I 

think it’s between me and Dion but 

if I’m scoring them I’ve got to stay 

on them,” Morley said. 

The added responsibility appears

running on his arrival at Wanderers 

and hasn’t looked back. 

Before last Saturday’s game at 

Port Vale, Morley had finished on 

the losing side only once in his 

24 league appearances for the 

Whites. 

He had started all but one of 

Wanderers’ games since his 

January signing as one of the 

catalysts for the team’s revival in 

2022. 

And even in the early stages of 

the season he looks be taking his 

game to a new level as parts of the 

fixtures and fittings. 

“It’s all thanks to the staff. I came in 

and started playing straight away 

and with their help they’ve turned 

me into a good player,” Morley 

added. 

“I think I had a week off at the end 

of last season and after that I was 

straight back in the gym doing 

my stuff because I knew it was a 

massive season for me. 

“Only being here for half the 

season last time it was really time 

for me to kick on. 

“I’m loving it. It’s a dream come true 

to play for this massive club. Ever 

since I was a kid I wanted to be a 

footballer. 

“I don’t know anything else, so it’s 

just a dream come true.”

We are thrilled to announce

2021/22 Bolton Wanderers in the 

Community Impact Report. Join 

us as we take a look back over 

the last 12 months and highlight 

some of the meaningful and 

extensive work we undertook in 

the community. 

Using the power of sport 

combined with Bolton Wanderers 

Football Club, we provide positive 

engagement across Bolton and 

its wider communities in a bid to 

narrow the gap of disadvantage in 

Health, Education, Disability and 

Inclusion. 

In this digital document we 

dive into each of our fantastic 

programmes, hearing stories and 

first hand testimonies from an ever 

growing, ever improving Bolton. In 

the report you can also meet our 

staff, review our financial summary 

and social media reach. You can 

hear from trustees, partners and 

also see how the players from 

Bolton Wanderers, gave back to 

their community. 

Speaking on our work over the 

last year, BWitC CEO Phil Mason 

said: “Bolton Wanderers in the 

Community has continued to 

develop its great work in Bolton. 

I am delighted by the feedback 

I receive from so many who talk 

of the change since the new 

ownership of the Club and the real 

desire to be a force for good in our 

town.” 

“Within the Impact Report there 

are some very moving testimonies 

and stories from participants who 

engage with us. I want to thank our 

trustees, staff, volunteers, funders, 

partners and sponsors who are 

collectively helping us to deliver 

positive change in our town.” 

MORE THAN JUST A 

FITNESS CLASS 

Before FIT FANS, Amjid had been 

off sick from work since October 

2021 suffering with depression 

due to a family trauma incident. 

Amjid was struggling to cope with 

daily tasks, for example booking 

at least 5 separate gym sessions 

and cancelling last minute as 

he wasn’t mentally well enough 

to attend, he had become very 

withdrawn. 

A Mental Health Nurse he met via 

his GP had put him in touch with 

Fit Trotters, both Jack and Dianne 

made contact and explained the 

details of the course which was 

due to start soon. After enrolling, 

Amjid was very anxious and afraid 

of what to expect, but showed up 

for his weigh in whilst he met other 

coaches and they recorded his 

details. 

The course was to run Wednesday 

evenings from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, 

January to March. The following 

Wednesday Amjid did attend but 

he stated he had found it hard due 

to struggling with his mental health, 

he had been sat on the stairs at 

home at about 6:30pm when his 

wife asked him why he hadn’t left 

to go to his Trotters session. Amjid 

stated he was just leaving and 

reluctantly attended the session 

and was very quiet in class. 

Everyone then participated in a 

walk around the football ground 

which Amjid really enjoyed and 

thus began to open up to the 

group. He told us that he hadn’t 

felt like attending but was glad 

that he did as it was the only event 

that had got him out of the house 

in the past few months. He started 

to especially look forward to the 

group activities such as circuit 

training. 

Over the coming weeks Amjid 

grew in confidence, became a key 

motivator for the group and has 

built strong friendships. He’s also 

been keen to motivate his Trotters 

team on the Fit Trotters WhatsApp 

group when they have tried new 

challenges or meal plans. Amjid 

has also sent pictures of his own 

healthy meals to share with his 

team and details from an over 

50s boxing class he has been 

attending with his new Trotters 

friend. 

Amjid is in a much better place, 

both physically and mentally. He 

has lost 3 kg whilst he has been 

on the course, his physicality has 

improved so much so he was 

running in the circuit sessions 

towards the latter half of the 

course providing inspiration to 

the rest of the group. Amjid loves 

his job as an emergency service 

officer and was over the moon he 

was able to return back to working 

in the community where he will 

make a difference in people’s lives.

Last week Bolton Wanderers in the 

Community published an impact 

report that brings to life the stories 

of those who have engaged with 

the charity and the differences 

that has brought to their lives. With 

over 15,000 individuals engaged 

in 10 programmes and 33 projects 

your club is making a big impact 

off the field and in the surrounding 

communities. 

Bolton is one of the 20% most 

deprived districts/unitary 

authorities in England and there 

are many areas of challenge and 

uncertainly for its residents. It is 

for this very reason we exist and 

operate as the charity arm of the 

Club to work towards our overall 

vision of a connected Bolton 

without disadvantage. 

I encourage you to take time to 

have a read through the impact 

report and to read the stories of 

those individuals who have made 

positive changes in their lives like 

Sohail. 

In May 2021 Sohail took up a 

Kickstart role with the charity as a 

Community Coach after struggling 

to find work for 6 months. He had 

experienced significant barriers 

in relation to his health which had 

affected his confidence and he 

was looking to give back to the 

community by helping those who 

had been through similar situations 

themselves. “I had a period of time 

where I was really struggling with 

my mental health, confidence and 

I was having more seizures due 

to my epilepsy. The opportunity 

with Bolton Wanderers in the 

Community came at a really good 

time and gave me the chance to try 

something new. Working for Bolton 

Wanderers in the Community has 

helped me get out of my comfort 

zone, meet new people, develop 

my confidence and has had a 

really positive impact on my health. 

I’m enjoying every minute of it and 

can’t wait to develop my skills even 

further”.

Still the Wanderers searched 

for their first win at the Reebok, 

this time against Third Division 

Leyton Orient, where they had 

the consolation of surviving to go 

through to the next round thanks 

to the 3-1 first leg advantage 

gained at Brisbane Road the 

previous week. 

Chief Coach Phil Brown took 

the side as manager Colin Todd 

was away on a scouting mission, 

ironically looking for a forward 

to strengthen the squad, but on 

this occasion it was a number of 

defensive errors that kept the 

Londoners in the tie. 

A number of changes to the side 

saw Gavin Ward in goal and a 

makeshift defence that featured 

Mike Whitlow as captain and centre 

back, although Wanderers weren’t 

helped by the loss of Michael

Johansen after just 15 minutes 

through injury, complacency crept 

into their performance. 

Alex Inglethorpe capitalized on 

slack marking to put Orient ahead 

in the 7th minute but the lead only 

lasted a minute as Nathan Blake 

dived to head in Jamie Pollock’s 

off target volley into an equaliser. 

Orient again took the lead on 

the night, Carl Griffiths taking 

advantage of Whitlow’s slip, only

for Blake to again come to the 

rescue just before half time with a 

class finish. 

A Joe Baker free kick restored 

Orient’s lead, awarded for a 

needless foul on Griffiths by Andy 

Todd, but Bolton levelled again in 

the 65th minute when a penalty 

was awarded after Per Frandsen 

had been upended. John McGinlay 

stepped up to make it 3-3 and that 

proved to be his 118th and final 

goal for the club before making a 

move to Bradford. 

A minute later substitute Arnar 

Gunnlaugsson headed Wanderers 

ahead for the first time on the night 

but Orient weren’t finished and had 

the consolation of a draw on the 

night when Mark Warren scored in 

the final minute of the game. 

Bolton’s reward was a third round 

home tie against fellow Premier 

League side Wimbledon where 

they would be looking for revenge 

after losing to them at the quarter 

final stage the previous season at 

Burnden.

The Wanderers finally registered 

a Premiership win at the Reebok 

that saw them climb off the 

bottom of the table and out of the 

relegation zone. 

New £3.5 million pound striker 

Dean Holdsworth spoke about the 

relief of starting to repay part of the 

fee with his first goal for the club, 

in what was his third appearance, 

to help register the first League 

win since the opening day of the 

season. The club had recorded 

their first win at the Reebok twelve 

days earlier with a 3rd round Coca 

Cola win against Holdsworth’s 

previous club Wimbledon but 

after so many close calls against 

Everton, Manchester United, 

Tottenham and Aston Villa it was 

a relief to finally get some home 

success in the League. 

It’s true that Wanderers rode their 

luck against Chelsea with ‘keeper 

Keith Branagan playing the hero’s 

role to deny the Londoners. Two 

magnificent saves denied Mark 

Hughes and on the stroke of half 

time Dan Petrescu also saw his 

goal bound effort turned away. 

The winning goal, Wanderers first 

Premiership goal from open play 

at the Reebok, came with just 18 

minutes remaining. Holdsworth 

neatly turned Scott Sellars cross 

past Ed De Goey and the Dutch 

‘keeper had to be alert just two 

minutes later with a fingertip save 

from Sellars as Bolton went for 

the kill. 

Nathan Blake then shot wide of an 

unguarded goal but final minutes 

seemed to last a lifetime as the 

Londoners went all out for an 

equalizer and there was palpable 

relief as referee Peter Jones blew 

the final whistle. 

After the celebrations in the camp 

there was a realization discipline 

needed improving with Gerry 

Taggart receiving his fifth booking 

of the season. This, added to 

his sending off at West Ham the 

previous week, meant he would 

now have to sit out six games. 

Sellars also reached the threshold 

whilst Andy Todd was still out with 

his ban for a punch up with Aston 

Villa’s Stan Collymore.

Everton remembered for the goal 

that never was. Gerry Taggart’s 

header clearly crossed the line but 

there was no video technology at 

the time and the ref didn’t give the

all teams, Everton.

player. We had the Indian sign over

play when Arsenal visited but he

experienced at the stadium? 

Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Cup 

in 2008. The stadium was buzzing 

that night and we won 1-0 with 

Sergio Aguero sent off, but what a 

career he then went on to have. I

Wycombe team and a comfortable 

cup win against our neighbours, 

Salford City. 

We hope you managed to visit the 

FanZone before the Wycombe 

game. By way of an update, 

we have raised the queueing 

issues with the club and we will 

hopefully see an improvement as 

further facilities are added. Work 

in progress, but a fantastic start 

to what we hope in the coming 

months will grow into one of the 

best pre/post-match meeting 

zones in the EFL.

Whites and the latest group to 

become affiliated, ‘Her Game 

Too’, who represent Wanderers 

female fans. Later in the season 

will focus on fan groups in Ireland, 

Spain, Norway, California and 

Latin America. The trust affiliates 

are coordinated by trust board 

member Martin Parnell and if 

you are part of a fans group and 

would like more information about 

becoming a trust affiliate, please

throughout the season at the 

Unibol stadium to give fans the 

chance to socialise, meet players, 

management and other interesting 

football related characters. 

Currently led by Alan Houghton, 

the BWSA Chair, their next meeting 

is planned for 27th October, 

subject to confirmation. At the last 

BWSA meeting in April, Season 

2021-22 awards were presented 

to Ricardo Almeida Santos, Gethin 

Jones and Dion Charles. Check

B TEAM AND ACADEMY 

The B team were set to kick off 

their Central League programme 

today as Matt Craddock’s squad 

began its competitive campaign. 

The Whites were playing at 

Fleetwood Town this afternoon to 

begin a new era for the Academy 

set-up. 

The introduction of the B team has 

been designed to try and create an 

improved path-way to the first team 

set-up for the club’s young players. 

And it’s already showing signs 

of working, with summer signing 

Nelson Khumbeni and first-year 

professional Lamine Toure making 

senior debuts. 

The teenage pair both came off 

the bench in the closing stages of 

the Whites’ 5-1 Carabao Cup win 

over Salford City after impressing 

in training and during the B team’s 

pre-season fixtures.

“I think it’s important we blood 

some young players. It was a 

perfect opportunity with the 

scoreline how it was,” said 

manager Ian Evatt. 

“Those two have been impressing 

with the B team and it will really 

inspire the B team players to see 

some of their team members come 

on and affect the first team game. 

“They should be looking at those 

two as to why they’ve been chosen 

and to how they’ve performed in 

the B team – day-in, day-out and 

not just match days. 

“Credit to them – two good young 

men and two excellent young 

footballers and hopefully there’s 

more where that came from. 

“Every day on the training pitch is 

an opportunity to impress us and it 

will show there is a clear pathway 

here.” 

The B team will play in the 

Central League and League Cup, 

alongside a series of friendlies 

to provide a variety of tests from 

different opposition. 

Meanwhile, the Youth Team are 

having a delayed start to their 

EFL Youth Alliance North West 

schedule due to their pre-season 

trip to Madrid. 

The first couple of fixtures have 

been rescheduled with Julian 

Darby’s side set to start out in the 

group stage of the league cup 

competition at Grimsby Town next 

Saturday.

successful training and educational 

trip to Spain, which included three 

matches and the chance to train at 

the Spanish FA. 

The young Whites beat local 

sides CD Mostoles and Raya 

Majadahonda and then in their final 

game played Atletico Madrid.

before the La Liga giants ran 

out 2-1 winners in a fantastic 

experience for Darby’s boys.
