Moorhouse about her
experience being a diving
and abseiling instructor,
what it was like being chair

LINDA STEWART has chaired
and been a member on the Waitai
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board since 2007 when she was first
elected but now she is taking a step
back.
Stewart (right) revealed she had
plans to stand as councillor for the
Burwood Ward for this upcoming
term but has since changed her
mind.
Instead, she wants to focus on
her jewellery art business, something
that she has “picked up and
dropped” a few times and has plans
to go overseas for a hip replacement
operation due to pressure on New
Zealand’s health system.
However, she said she will still be
involved in the community, pushing
for issues that are important to her
such as a community facility for
the Burwood Ward, reduction or
abolishment of water rates for sandbased
suburbs and a better spa at
Queen Elizabeth II Park.

Push to make more use of Roy Stokes hall
MORE GROUPS are being
sought to use the Roy Stokes
Community Hall to ensure it can
become a thriving community
asset.
The hall, which was once part of
Central New Brighton School, is
now open for use by community
groups, workshops, performance,
and education groups with the
overarching idea of forming a
creative community hub.
However, there are no fixed
thoughts about what this means
and a range of ideas have been
considered.
The Toi Collective Art Studio
and Gallery and The Christchurch
Circus Trust are the regular users
of the hall.
“The Roy Stokes Community
Hall was built by the people of
New Brighton and it is there for
the community to use, so we want
to hear from them,” Elisha Blogg,
a New Brighton resident who
is the director of Life in Vacant
Spaces, said.
In 2021, ChristchurchNZ
contracted LiVS – an organisation
which connects owners of vacant
land and buildings – to support a
trial of a creative community hub
in the hall.
The project will establish if
Roy Stokes Community Hall can
become a long-term sustainable
creative community hub.

‘It’s like looking after a lot of chicks’

“I’m not going to fade away
from the community, I’m really
concerned for my Burwood
Ward,” she said.
“They’re [residents] like chicks,
it’s like looking after a lot of
chicks and really not a lot has
happened for them.”
Stewart expressed her disappointment
with what she called
“political manipulation” on the
community board this term.
“The Coastal Ward is the rock
star and the advocacy from the
board for Burwood has been
non-existent as much as I try,”
she said.
“Returning as an elected member
I felt really frustrated because
I was treated more like a threat
than an asset.”
However, Stewart wasn’t always
a “staunchly independent” voice
for the community and worked
in a variety of roles before joining
the community board.
Stewart grew up in Redwood
and attended Papanui High
School before getting married to
her late husband Geoff when she
was 19.
The pair had two children and
moved to Parklands in 1971, after
hearing about QE II, as Stewart
and her children loved swimming.
In the mid 1980s Stewart began
working as an accountant as well
as studying commerce at Canterbury
University, however when
Geoff became terminally ill she
stopped her studies to care for
him, in spite of being separated.
During this time, Stewart was
also working in disaster recovery
for Civil Defence, something she
said was “awesome fun”.
As if that wasn’t enough on her
plate Stewart trained to become
a scuba diving and abseiling
instructor in the 1980s.
FITNESS: Stewart
took up nordic
walking as a form
of rehabilitation
and it wasn’t long
before she began
running the classes
herself.
She did sea diving mostly in
Kaikoura and around Marlborough
Sounds and abseiled
around Banks Peninsula and just
north of Kaikoura.
Stewart chaired an underwater
club as well as becoming the first
female to chair a dive club in the
country and said she learnt a lot
about sexism during this time.
“The [male] students that were
older than me did not like me
being an instructor, they couldn’t
take it,” she said.
“The head instructor would
say: ‘Don’t you get on the wrong
side of Linda or you’ll find yourself
making a quick trip to the
surface’.”
Stewart continued with her
work at Civil Defence, working
her way up to second-in-charge
in change management before
becoming a business rescue
specialist.
In 1994 Stewart was knocked
over by a freight contractor while
at work, causing frame damage
to her hips, spine and sacrum,
ending her diving and abseiling
career.
This started a five year-long
battle with ACC which involved
hiring a lawyer and loosing
thousands of dollars she was
paid out to cover costs for the
lawyer and WINZ as well as tax
deductions.

Waimakariri District Council,

to disclose on her Christchurch
candidate profile.
Two years later QE II opened
and Stewart was missing being
able to go swimming with her
friends so decided to move back
to the east in 2019 and built in
Prestons Park.
Stewart said her favourite thing
about being on the community
board is working at ground level
with the people in the community,
especially during the earthquakes.
“We had 57 and a half thousand
people that were in total
turmoil and I felt like they were
my kids.”
Over the 15 years of experience
Stewart has had on the community
board she said they’ve
become more sidelined over time
and don’t have the same freedom
as they once did.
“We’ve become a board that
rubber stamps what comes from
town and I’m sad about that because
that means our democracy
is being undermined.”
She said this “erosion of democracy”
has made it difficult
for her to advocate for the community,
particularly Burwood,
Avondale and Dallington which
she feels have been subject to
“social isolation.”
When asked what advice she
would give to anyone wanting to
join the community board she
said “don’t bother unless you’re
already connected to the community.”
As for plans for the future,
aside from her jewellery art
business, Stewart looks forward
to going away with friends in
her motor-home and eventually
starting up her walking classes
again once she’s had her hip
replacement.
She also talks about diving
again one day, preferably in the
Cook Islands.
