Taking a break but still
concerned about community
After 15 years on a
community board Linda
Stewart has decided not
to stand this term but isn’t
ruling out standing in the
future. She talks to Emily
Moorhouse about her
experience being a diving
and abseiling instructor,
what it was like being chair
during the earthquakes
and how at times she has
felt as though residents in
her ward were her children
LINDA STEWART has chaired
and been a member on the Waitai
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board since 2007 when she was first
elected but now she is taking a step
back.
Stewart (right) revealed she had
plans to stand as councillor for the
Burwood Ward for this upcoming
term but has since changed her
mind.
Instead, she wants to focus on
her jewellery art business, something
that she has “picked up and
dropped” a few times and has plans
to go overseas for a hip replacement
operation due to pressure on New
Zealand’s health system.
However, she said she will still be
involved in the community, pushing
for issues that are important to her
such as a community facility for
the Burwood Ward, reduction or
abolishment of water rates for sandbased
suburbs and a better spa at
Queen Elizabeth II Park.
Push to make more use of Roy Stokes hall
MORE GROUPS are being
sought to use the Roy Stokes
Community Hall to ensure it can
become a thriving community
asset.
The hall, which was once part of
Central New Brighton School, is
now open for use by community
groups, workshops, performance,
and education groups with the
overarching idea of forming a
creative community hub.
However, there are no fixed
thoughts about what this means
and a range of ideas have been
considered.
The Toi Collective Art Studio
and Gallery and The Christchurch
Circus Trust are the regular users
of the hall.
“The Roy Stokes Community
Hall was built by the people of
New Brighton and it is there for
the community to use, so we want
to hear from them,” Elisha Blogg,
a New Brighton resident who
is the director of Life in Vacant
Spaces, said.
In 2021, ChristchurchNZ
contracted LiVS – an organisation
which connects owners of vacant
land and buildings – to support a
trial of a creative community hub
in the hall.
The project will establish if
Roy Stokes Community Hall can
become a long-term sustainable
creative community hub.
“We have been set back with
Covid a number of times and
have around 10 months from now
CREATIVE: T.O.I Collective student Nexii Thompson.
to push some good interest within
the community,” Blogg said.
The hall can hold up to 360
people (372m2) as well as a
meeting room space (30m2) for
hire. This affordable space has
accessible parking, a large kitchen,
bathrooms and seating options.
GOING PLACES: Linda Stewart took up four-wheel-driving in a Toyota Land Cruiser after an accident as a way to keep herself busy. Right: Stewart and
her daughter gearing up for a scallop dive in Queen Charlotte Sound.
‘It’s like looking after a lot of chicks’
• From page 1
“I’m not going to fade away
from the community, I’m really
concerned for my Burwood
Ward,” she said.
“They’re [residents] like chicks,
it’s like looking after a lot of
chicks and really not a lot has
happened for them.”
Stewart expressed her disappointment
with what she called
“political manipulation” on the
community board this term.
“The Coastal Ward is the rock
star and the advocacy from the
board for Burwood has been
non-existent as much as I try,”
she said.
“Returning as an elected member
I felt really frustrated because
I was treated more like a threat
than an asset.”
However, Stewart wasn’t always
a “staunchly independent” voice
for the community and worked
in a variety of roles before joining
the community board.
Stewart grew up in Redwood
and attended Papanui High
School before getting married to
her late husband Geoff when she
was 19.
The pair had two children and
moved to Parklands in 1971, after
hearing about QE II, as Stewart
and her children loved swimming.
In the mid 1980s Stewart began
working as an accountant as well
as studying commerce at Canterbury
University, however when
Geoff became terminally ill she
stopped her studies to care for
him, in spite of being separated.
During this time, Stewart was
also working in disaster recovery
for Civil Defence, something she
said was “awesome fun”.
As if that wasn’t enough on her
plate Stewart trained to become
a scuba diving and abseiling
instructor in the 1980s.
FITNESS: Stewart
took up nordic
walking as a form
of rehabilitation
and it wasn’t long
before she began
running the classes
herself.
She did sea diving mostly in
Kaikoura and around Marlborough
Sounds and abseiled
around Banks Peninsula and just
north of Kaikoura.
Stewart chaired an underwater
club as well as becoming the first
female to chair a dive club in the
country and said she learnt a lot
about sexism during this time.
“The [male] students that were
older than me did not like me
being an instructor, they couldn’t
take it,” she said.
“The head instructor would
say: ‘Don’t you get on the wrong
side of Linda or you’ll find yourself
making a quick trip to the
surface’.”
Stewart continued with her
work at Civil Defence, working
her way up to second-in-charge
in change management before
becoming a business rescue
specialist.
In 1994 Stewart was knocked
over by a freight contractor while
at work, causing frame damage
to her hips, spine and sacrum,
ending her diving and abseiling
career.
This started a five year-long
battle with ACC which involved
hiring a lawyer and loosing
thousands of dollars she was
paid out to cover costs for the
lawyer and WINZ as well as tax
deductions.
Working with people a favourite pastime
• From page 5
“What was $150,000 is down
to something like $59,000. You’re
saying to yourself do I want to
put it on the mortgage or do I
want to have a life,” she said.
“Well bugger me I chose a life
so I bought my own truck and
started up my life again.”
While Stewart said those
five years were “bloody hard”
she doesn’t see them as a waste
because she learned a lot about
herself during that time, particularly
her creative side.
In 1999 she went back to
Canterbury University to take
a year-long photography course
and took up off-roading with the
four-wheel drive she bought. her already damaged hips.
Previously, Stewart hadn’t
She would take her vehicle out “Those classes were so busy I entertained the idea of standing
to glaciers and the Main Divide was wrecking my wrecked body,” for the community board.
and take photos of the landscape, she said.
But after attending more community
meetings and receiving
“Well one day this man came elected as a community board
That same year Stewart was
After it was confirmed Stewart’s
house wasn’t going to get
rebuilt, she made the move out to
Rangiora east in 2016 while still
being a member on the community
board.
“I built a lovely home there and
I felt bloody lonely,” she said.
During this time she ran for
both the Waitai Coastal-Burwood
Community Board and the
Waimakariri District Council,
something she said she forgot
to disclose on her Christchurch
candidate profile.
Two years later QE II opened
and Stewart was missing being
able to go swimming with her
friends so decided to move back
to the east in 2019 and built in
Prestons Park.
Stewart said her favourite thing
about being on the community
board is working at ground level
with the people in the community,
especially during the earthquakes.
“We had 57 and a half thousand
people that were in total
turmoil and I felt like they were
my kids.”
Over the 15 years of experience
Stewart has had on the community
board she said they’ve
become more sidelined over time
and don’t have the same freedom
as they once did.
“We’ve become a board that
rubber stamps what comes from
town and I’m sad about that because
that means our democracy
is being undermined.”
She said this “erosion of democracy”
has made it difficult
for her to advocate for the community,
particularly Burwood,
Avondale and Dallington which
she feels have been subject to
“social isolation.”
When asked what advice she
would give to anyone wanting to
join the community board she
said “don’t bother unless you’re
already connected to the community.”
As for plans for the future,
aside from her jewellery art
business, Stewart looks forward
to going away with friends in
her motor-home and eventually
starting up her walking classes
again once she’s had her hip
replacement.
She also talks about diving
again one day, preferably in the
Cook Islands.
HOME & HEATING
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
THRIVING: The Eldernet team. Below – Eleanor Bodger (right) and her
daughter Esther Perriam have grown Eldernet into a leading provider of
information for the older community.
Eldernet celebrates
25 years in business
HITTING THE 25th year mark is a
momentous milestone for The Eldernet
Group – a Christchurch-based directory
business dedicated to helping the elderly.
It all started in 1997 when the life-long
New Brighton resident Eleanor Bodger
saw a need for an information
service providing older Kiwis with
important information.
Now with a team of more
than 20 people, the business is
counting every care home and
registered retirement village in
the country among their clients.
“What we are particularly
proud of is the way we haven’t
wavered from our vision of
making life easier and better
for all older people – even if
that has meant rocking the
boat over the years,” said
Bodger.
Last week Eldernet
celebrated its 25th anniversary
with a special event, which
included an appearance by
2022 New Zealander of the
Year, Tā Tipene O’Regan ONZ.
The event also coincided with the
opening of their new home in the heart of
New Brighton.
The business is already looking ahead to
the next 25 years – a future that will come
with its fair challenges for New Zealand’s
ageing population.
While the new health system aims to
provide the quality and consistency of
health care for all New Zealanders, the
reality is that the sector is still under
huge strain.
“Yet that’s what we’re here for – to
empower people to live the life they want.
Having access to the right information
helps people to navigate the ageing
journey, and all the ups and downs along
the way,” Bodger said.
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
The importance
of air quality
The quality of the air we breathe affects
our health and ability to perform. We
breathe in and out approximately 20,000
litres of air every day. It is therefore very
important to ensure good air quality
indoors through adequate ventilation.
Ventilation is the process of air exchange
to provide the necessary air quality that
meets the needs of the occupants for clean,
fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon
dioxide causes stuffiness in the room
and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible
harmful substances like a high content
of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful
and can cause various diseases. Even bad
smells can cause discomfort or irritate
the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy
to open windows for cross ventilation,
however as winter approaches, we start to
shut up out houses to trap in the heat and
as a result, air quality can decline.
Ventilation includes both
the exchange of air to the
outside as well as circulation
of air within the building. It
is one of the most important
factors for maintaining
acceptable indoor air quality
in buildings. Filtered air
supply for summer and
filtered and warmed air in
winter creates a healthy
environment in which to
live and work. In cases
with poor or insufficient air
intake from outside, the oxygen content
decreases, humidity and dustiness levels
increase. If exhaust ventilation is not
provided or it is not effective, polluted air,
smells, humidity and harmful substances
are not removed.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required air exchange for your
building requirement. Smooth-Air offers
a wide range of ventilation equipment,
from air vents to ducting for fans, for both
the commercial and domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of fans and
ventilation components in-store but they
