Traffic disruption likely
at busy intersection
PEOPLE travelling in the
Addington area can expect
some disruption in the coming
weeks as contracting crews
begin upgrading a major
intersection.
They are going to be
installing a raised safety
platform at the busy
intersection of Lincoln Rd,
Barrington St and Whiteleigh
Ave to encourage people to
travel through it at safer speeds.
“This intersection
is
used by about
50,000 vehicles
a day and by
many pedestrians
and
cyclists,’’ city
council head of
Lynette Ellis transport Lynette
Ellis said.
“Whether people are travelling
through this intersection
by car, on foot, by bike or on a
bus, we want them to be able to
do so safely so we are installing
a raised safety platform.
“Raised safety platforms are
a treatment that is increasingly
being used across New Zealand
to improve safety through intersections
and crossings by encouraging
safer speeds but this
is the first time we’ve installed
one at a major Christchurch
intersection,’’ Ellis said.
Your Local MP for Banks Peninsula
Tracey
McLellan
There’s a lot to look forward to on
the ground in some of my favourite
suburbs. My recent community
clinic for residents in Cracroft and
Westmorland was engaging as always
- thanks to everyone who called by.
These clinics are a great way to meet
with people and hear your stories and
listen to your priorities. I’ll be at the St
Martins Community Centre on 27th
August so please look out for your
invite in letterboxes soon.
I know there’s a lot happening in the
world at the moment and we’re not
immune to the significant global
pressures, but our government is
taking action. The cost of living
package rolls out this month and
petrol and public transport subsidies
have been extended into next year to
help toward easing the pressures on
New Zealand families.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was
in Christchurch earlier this month to
talk with student leaders from 34 high
schools. It was such a lovely afternoon
and a chance to acknowledge the
challenges students face and just
ask questions about anything and
everything. It was great to see Bella
and Toby there from Cashmere High
School - Te iringa o Kahukura. You
can’t help but feel proud when such
amazing young people represent their
communities so well.
I’m looking forward to catching up
with the fantastic team at Somerfield
Te Kura Wairepo this week – a lovely
school set in beautiful grounds. I
never tire of school visits because they
inspire me to keep remembering why
we are here and why we do this. We
have a wealth of amazing schools in
the Banks Peninsula electorate.
Well, soon we will be enjoying the
colour and warmth of spring in
the garden city. Until then, I hope
the remainder of winter treats you
well. As always, my office is here to
help – please don’t hesitate to reach
out if there’s anything I can do to
assist. We’re at 642 Ferry Road in
New home for Bush Farm Education
• By Annabel Black
FINDING AND securing a new
residence for much-loved Bush
Farm Education has been an
involved process for managing
director and lead kaiako Katie
Earle and her team.
“We were
looking for a
new location
that could offer
a connection to
the land, sea and
nature, similar
to what we had
Katie Earle at Orton Bradley
Park,” Earle said.
Reaching out to the local
community led Earle to meet
with Denis Aldridge from Living
Springs, and the synergy
between the two organisations
was quickly realised.
To celebrate the new partnership,
Bush Farm will be holding
an open day at Living Springs on
September 1 at 3pm.
For 50 years, Living Springs
has attracted many thousands of
young people and community
groups to a unique and breathtaking
setting. The campers
engage with nature, unplug from
city life and have the opportunity
to take part in challenging
adventures.
Living Springs business
development manager Heba
Mashhour said: “Much of our
ethos centres around well-being,
the outdoors, the environment
and education. As such, we are
delighted to welcome Bush Farm
education to Living Springs.”
For Bush Farm, the new location
offers a stream, native bush,
a working sheep farm, animals,
access to the sea, and a similar
vision.
For working parents, it’s even
closer to Ōtautahi Christchurch,
now a 15-minute commute over
the hill from Colombo St, and a
similar drive from Lyttelton and
Diamond Harbour.
Bush Farm Education started
in 2018 to cater to the people
of Waitaha Canterbury. It grew
out of the need to bring a deeper
connection to the farm, sea and
whenua.
Research indicates children
who experience outdoor play
have higher pro-environmental
attitudes, are more resilient and
are resourceful, while Indigenous
knowledge shows a deep
connection to the whenua fosters
holistic well-being and supports
a sense of identity and belonging.
“By combining both lenses,
within a relationship-based
environment, our whānau can
flourish in their knowledge, and
further their understanding of
the world,” Earle said.
“Bush Farm operates outdoors,
year-round, in all weathers.
We’re an organisation that connects
nature with resourcefulness.
We follow the cycles of the
seasons. We ask the ‘why’ and
the ‘how’. We craft, we observe,
we gather, we kōrero.”
The feedback is unanimous:
the children and their families
love it.
Baxter Scott is 10-years-old
and has been a student at Bush
Farm since the start of the year.
He takes leave from his local
primary school to attend each
Thursday during the school
term, as well as joining holiday
programmes events.
“Being somewhere new means
we can do different things
around Living Springs,” said
Baxter.
“I say it will be very nice – I
am so happy that Living Springs
is allowing us to keep going. I
love Bush Farm – learning about
the outdoors has been great.
Other than my home(s) it’s my
favourite place to be, it feels like I
have a lot of friends there.”
Bush Farm uses a variety of
tools on its programmes such
as sensory awareness, self-care,
quiet mind, autonomy, co-operation,
empathy, interdependence,
pattern detection, singing and
storytelling. The school ensures
learners are connected to themselves,
their community and
their environment in a way that
empowers them to act as kaitiaki
and future problem-solvers.
• Please contact Katie
Earle to register your open
day attendance katie@
Safety measures for Tennyson St
• By Natalie Pham
PEDESTRIAN improvements
will finally happen on a busy
street between St Martins and
Beckenham.
In the latest joint meeting,
the Waikura Linwood-Central-
Healthcote and the Waihoro
Spreydon-Cashmere community
boards approved changes to
improve pedestrian safety at
Tennyson St near its intersection
with Norwood St.
Improvements include
installing no stopping lines,
increasing space in the centre of
the traffic island, incorporating
vertical traffic calming and
red coloured surfacing, and
incorporating an island on the
south side of Tennyson St to
increase visibility and reduce the
crossing distance.
However, residents who
wanted a zebra crossing will not
get it.
Abley engineers assessed the
area and found the site did not
meet the criteria for a zebra
crossing, due to the recorded
speed being just over 50km/h
(52.9km/h). The conclusion
was based on Waka Kotahi
pedestrian network guidance,
a process for determining
appropriate mid-block crossing
types.
Senior transportation engineer
Gemma Dioni noted that
children assumed they had the
right of way on a zebra crossing
and stepped onto it without
checking first.
If the crossing was
implemented, it could lead to “a
collision between the pedestrian
and a vehicle with serious
consequence”.
The danger posed by crossing
the road had been a concern
among the local community for
many years.
“It has taken far too long to get
to this point,” primary school
Beckenham Te Kura o Puroto
chair Matthew McDonald said.
He said it was a “minor
miracle” no death or injured had
occurred.
A former student at
Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto
said she used to cross the street
with her young sister everyday.
Now, as she is leaving for high
school, she is concerned about
the safety of her sister.
“It’s really unsafe. It’s our
least favourite part of the day,”
IMPROVEMENT:
Changes will
be made on
Tennyson St
to improve
pedestrian
safety.
she said.
“I just feel very unsafe leaving
her to cross by herself now.”
The two community boards
also requested city council staff
monitor the impacts of the safety
improvements, seek community
feedback, and report the results
12 months after implementation.
Heathcote Ward councillor
Sara Templeton was pleased
the improvements would be
completed before the start of the
next school year.
Volunteers
needed for
Daffodil Day
THE CANCER Society is seeking
more volunteers to help with
its local Daffodil Day street
collection next Friday, August 26
and Saturday, August 27.
Cancer Society Canterbury-
West Coast division fundraising
manager Heather Locke said the
organisation is excited to be able
to get out and about this year,
after the nationwide lockdown
forced the cancellation of last
year’s street appeal.
“Every day 71 New Zealanders
are diagnosed with cancer, so
everybody knows somebody who
has been impacted,” Locke said.
“Volunteering for a couple
of hours on Daffodil Day is a
really great way to support the
thousands of New Zealanders
living with cancer.”
• To sign up as a volunteer,
Flying Doctor Trust this month,
bringing its total commitment
over the last three years to
$75,000.
Trust chair, Dr David Bowie,
who recently met with the Rotary
Clubs to accept the cheque
on behalf of the service, says this
commitment from organisations
like Rotary is vital for the ongoing
service.
“Each year the trust needs to
raise at least $3 million and the
need for this life-saving service
increases year on year. The crew
have been inspired by the community
who have continued to
offer sponsorships and support
during these challenging times,”
he said.
The New Zealand Flying Doctor
Service was tasked to 1070
missions across the country last
year, and is on track to surpass
that number, with 580 missions
in the first six months of 2022.
With four planes and bases in
Christchurch and Nelson, the
air ambulance upped its criticalcare
patient transfer services between
hospitals across the South
Island including the Chatham
Islands, and also further afield to
Starship in Auckland, Taranaki
and Wellington.
“We started the year with over
New Zealand Flying Doctor Service Christchurch base
crew, (from left to right) – Warrick, Abby, Kim, Sarah, Arthur,
Shane, and David with the latest cheque from Christchurch
Rotary Club.
100 missions in January, and this
number was surpassed in May
with 110 missions,” he says.
As a flying intensive care unit
with highly trained medical staff
and specialist equipment, patients
receive a seamless level of
care from bed to bed. The service
operates day and night transferring
critical care burn victims,
spinal injury patients, neonatal
transfers, trauma victims, surgery
transfers, organ delivery,
blood or equipment supplies.
The NZFD Trust helps support
the operational costs of the
service, including the purchase
of specialised equipment and
training.
Club president, Charlie Rattray
says the Rotary Club of Christchurch
is delighted to have been
able to support the New Zealand
Flying Doctor Service for three
years in a row.
“We have a strong link and
proud association with this
wonderful service,” he said
Resealing will take place
on Moorhouse Ave
• From page 1
The intersection upgrade
will take about two months to
complete and is part of a bigger
project of work the council is
doing to install peak-hour bus
lanes on Lincoln Rd to improve
the reliability of bus services
to and from the fast-growing
south-west of Christchurch.
Contractors are also replacing
an ageing water main underneath
Lincoln Rd.
“We know that road works
are disruptive, particularly for
local businesses, so we have our
contractors working on several
projects, day and night, so that
we can get out of peoples’ way
sooner,’’ Ellis said.
“Because of the high volume
of traffic that use the Lincoln
Rd, Barrington St, Whiteleigh
Ave intersection, we are going to
upgrade the intersection in three
stages, beginning on Monday.
“Our contractor will start by
doing some low impact work,
but from August 29 we will need
to put lane reductions in place
so that they can safely complete
relocating the underground services
and building the new kerbs
and footpaths.
“At the end of September we
will need to fully close the intersection
for three days so that
the raised safety platform can
be installed and the intersection
approaches resurfaced. We will
provide more details about this
RESTRICTIONS: Night work
will be carried out on the
intersection of Lincoln Rd
and Moorhouse Ave for
resealing.
closure and the detours that will
be in place closer to the time,’’
Ellis says.
“We also want people to be
aware that we will be resealing
parts of Lincoln Rd and Moorhouse
Ave in the second half of
September. This work will be
done at night but it will require
us to restrict traffic on Lincoln
Rd, between Whiteleigh Ave and
Moorhouse Ave, to one-way citybound
only.’’
During the day, Lincoln Rd
will re-open to two-way traffic.
“If you are going to be
travelling on Lincoln Rd or in
the Addington area over the
next couple of months please be
aware that you might encounter
road works and factor a little
extra journey time into your
day,’’ Ellis said.
Clear direction for young entrepreneurs
Chance to
win national
business
competition
• By Natalie Pham
TWO YOUNG entrepreneurs
are hoping to earn a spot in
the regional final of a national
business competition.
Cashmere High School
students George Ladley and
Max Gardiner, both 17, are the
brains behind Vision – the sole
sustainable anti-fogging spray in
New Zealand.
The pair is currently in the
fourth challenge of the Young
Enterprise Scheme, where they
have to submit evidence of two
different ways they have sold
their products.
This one-year programme
requires students to complete
five challenges before proceeding
to the regional final, where top
teams will pitch to a panel of
judges to be selected as a regional
champion.
The winning teams will then
compete in the national final for
a share of more than $20,000 in
prize money.
Both students have sold more
than 60 bottles to people across
New Zealand via their website.
ENTERPRISING: George Ladley (left) and Max Gardiner
with Vision anti-fogging spray
“We also did a sales pitch to
our staff at school and got over
20 sales just from that alone,”
Max said.
“It gave us a big boost in
confidence.”
The business idea of Vision
came from their first-hand
experiences of foggy glasses
during mountain biking. But
it was not until the Covid-19
pandemic, when the duo
observed the rise in foggy glasses
through wearing a mask, that
they decided to bring this idea
to life.
Aware of the harmful chemical
ingredients existing in common
anti-fogging sprays, they started
experimenting with three
ingredients: water, detergent and
isopropyl alcohol.
“We took our head of
chemistry’s ideas for the formula
and played around with ratio
until one of them worked,” Max
said.
“It was a breakthrough!”
The pair also decided to
use glass bottles as packaging
to make their product more
sustainable.
“We found out that it doesn’t
matter where we store the spray,”
he said.
“If we can use glass and make
it more sustainable, then why
not? “
With the core value of “giving
people vision,” the company
is donating 50c from every
bottle sold to The Fred Hollows
Foundation.
COMMITTED: Dave Bryce uses his spare time to co-ordinate restorating
Drayton Reserve.
Living sustainably:
Every bit counts
FOR DAVE Bryce, one of the secrets to
living a healthier and longer life is getting
down in the dirt.
At 74, Bryce has been working to live
as sustainably as possible for the past 20
years.
“My wife and I are trying to live as sustainably
as we can by providing for most of
our needs through nature.
“We grow trees for firewood, eat from
our garden, and heat our house from the
sun.
“We’ve found that working with plants
and trees is important. There’s bacteria
on them and in the soil that interact with
our own microbiomes and stimulate our
endorphins.
“We feel good and it keeps us healthier
and more resilient,” he said.
As a volunteer, Bryce uses his spare time
to co-ordinate the restoration of Drayton
Reserve, a former pastoral farm that sits
below his home on Mt Pleasant.
“Scientists have said that 50 per cent of
the earth’s surface needs to be returned
back to its original ecosystems if the human
species is to survive, so we are totally
dependent on that happening and we’re
working on doing it here,” he said.
“There are many benefits to working
with nature and every time you go into the
reserve, there is something new to learn
about the interactions between the plants,
bird-life, insects and fish.”
Bryce has organised volunteers to work
in Drayton Reserve since 2016 and estimates
they have planted about 8000 trees.
“We’ve been doing this for six years and
are in our seventh planting season. We
try to put in a thousand trees a year, but it
usually ends up being more than that.
“We have 200 people on our email list,
and 10 to 20 regulars. We’re always looking
for more people who are keen to get
involved, whether it be individuals, businesses
or school groups.
“All of our trees are eco-sourced, provided
by the [city] council, and we get them
right here in Christchurch from Trees for
Canterbury.”
Bryce keeps the group growing with
regular working bees and newsletters.
He has also been involved with the creation
of the Eco Kiwi Pledges, a joint effort
with the Redcliffs Residents’ Association,
which lists ways people can reduce their
carbon emissions and improve biodiversity.
While planting trees and looking after
the reserve takes up a lot of Bryce’s spare
time, he is also a keen gardener, growing
more than 100 edible species in his garden.
From grapes and guava to broccoli and
bananas, Bryce has attempted to grow it
all.
“We love having our own garden and it
means we can reuse our waste, we don’t
have to go out and buy fruits and vegies,
and we’re integrating with our own ecosystem.
“Anyone can start getting a garden
growing. You can simply start by growing
micro greens on your kitchen bench.
“I recommend starting off small. Things
like lettuces are great as they grow all year
round. Or peas and broad beans are also
quite easy.
“Every little bit counts and anything can
be helpful. We need to learn to live within
nature if we want to survive on this planet,
everyone can do it,” said Bryce.
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
The importance
of air quality
The quality of the air we breathe affects
our health and ability to perform. We
breathe in and out approximately 20,000
litres of air every day. It is therefore very
important to ensure good air quality
indoors through adequate ventilation.
Ventilation is the process of air exchange
to provide the necessary air quality that
meets the needs of the occupants for clean,
fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon
dioxide causes stuffiness in the room
and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible
harmful substances like a high content
of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful
and can cause various diseases. Even bad
smells can cause discomfort or irritate
the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy
to open windows for cross ventilation,
however as winter approaches, we start to
shut up out houses to trap in the heat and
as a result, air quality can decline.
Ventilation includes both
the exchange of air to the
outside as well as circulation
of air within the building. It
is one of the most important
factors for maintaining
acceptable indoor air quality
in buildings. Filtered air
supply for summer and
filtered and warmed air in
winter creates a healthy
environment in which to
live and work. In cases
with poor or insufficient air
intake from outside, the oxygen content
decreases, humidity and dustiness levels
increase. If exhaust ventilation is not
provided or it is not effective, polluted air,
smells, humidity and harmful substances
are not removed.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required air exchange for your
building requirement. Smooth-Air offers
a wide range of ventilation equipment,
from air vents to ducting for fans, for both
the commercial and domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of fans and
ventilation components in-store but they
can also provide innovative solutions
tailored to differing requirements.
