Amazing Grace ‘in shock’ 

ST ANDREW’S College head 

prefect Grace Lawrence has won 

the Play It Strange songwriting 

competition. 

The year 13 student received 

an $8000 New Zealand On Air 

‘special tracks’ grant to record 

her song and make a music 

video, and $1000 from the 

Rockshop. 

The announcement was made 

at a special school assembly and 

came as a complete surprise for 

the top music student. 

Grace said she was “in shock”. 

“I never expected to win or 

even become a finalist, after 

already making the finals of this 

year’s Play It Strange peace song 

competition. 

“I’m so happy and very grateful.” 

Mike Chunn, former bass 

player for Split Enz and chief 

executive of Play It Strange, said 

Grace was no stranger to the 

music awards. She was twice 

a finalist in the organisation’s 

peace song competition, and 

a finalist in the 2021 Lion 

Foundation songwriting 

competition. 

“With her winning song 

this year Grace has reached an 

engaging and varied lyric and 

musical standard. She is a natural 

and her future is bright.” 

The Lion Foundation songwriting 

competition is the 

trust’s flagship songwriting 

competition. It attracted 352 

entries this year from year 9-13 

students across New Zealand. 

Following the school presentation, 

Grace performed the 

coming-of-age song, Differently 

Now, to the assembled students 

and teachers. 

“I couldn’t have asked for 

more support from my teachers 

and St Andrew’s College over 

the last five years,” she said. 

“They are incredible and I 

wouldn’t be able to do it without 

them.”

Make history with handmade 

dioramas at children’s event 

CHILDREN WILL get an 

opportunity to peep into the 

past at a special community art 

event at Tūranga on Saturday 

and Sunday. 

The free event will see 

Dunedin-based community artist 

Janet de Wagt working with 

the children to help them make 

their own shoebox dioramas 

using some of the historic photos 

of Christchurch and Canterbury 

that can be found on Christchurch 

Libraries’ Canterbury 

Stories website. 

“Janet will be encouraging the 

kids to travel back in time by 

making a scene of themselves 

amidst historic Christchurch 

photos,’’ said Heritage New Zealand 

Pouhere Taonga outreach 

adviser Dr Rosemary Baird. 

Heritage New Zealand 

Pouhere Taonga has organised 

the event, using funding from 

the city council’s creative communities 

scheme. 

“We hope that through the 

art project children can imagine 

themselves back in the past 

and ask questions about what it 

would have been like to live in 

Christchurch 20, 50, or 100 years 

ago. It is a chance for children to 

learn about our city, and how it 

has changed over time, in a fun 

and creative way,’’ Baird said. 

There will be two opportunities 

for children to participate in 

the creative workshops, with one 

session on Saturday, 10.30am- 

12.30pm and another session at 

the same time on Sunday. The 

workshops are free and offered 

on a first in, first served basis. 

The shoebox dioramas created 

by the children will go on show 

to the public at a free exhibition 

at Te Whare Waiututu Kate 

Sheppard House in the October 

school holidays.

curation librarian Sarah Snelling 

said selecting photos for use in 

the dioramas was a fun task that 

involved searching out both geographical 

images and images of 

subjects or activities that might 

appeal to children. 

“The geographic images were 

needed so that the children can 

create their scene. I selected 

a variety of locations around 

Christchurch so that the children 

could potentially choose 

an area they know, or they could 

use location images that they

create a more electronic sound, 

said St Andrew’s College head of 

music Duncan Ferguson. 

“We are incredibly proud of 

Grace.” 

The multi-talented musician, 

songwriter and performer has 

already achieved great success, 

winning the 2021 New Zealand 

Chamber Music Contest as a 

violinist in the St Andrew’s 

College trio Vich Perfect. 

She was also concertmaster 

of the New Zealand Secondary 

Schools’ Orchestra and has 

had several lead roles in school 

productions. 

St Andrew’s College rector 

Christine Leighton said Grace’s 

creativity is an inspiration for 

many students. 

“As a head prefect this 

year, she has balanced 

many responsibilities and 

commitments. It was fantastic to 

surprise her with this award in 

our cultural assembly, which I 

know will mean so much to her.” 

The winning song will feature 

on the 2022 Play it Strange album. 

Grace will perform it at the 

annual Play it Strange awards in 

Auckland in November.

she teaches at on Monday to a 

rapturous welcome from students. 

The new entrant teacher at 

Isleworth School in Bishopdale 

claimed two bronzes in bowls. 

While she was away, students 

studied the Commonwealth, the 

countries and the sports of the 

games. 

Bruce was heralded into the 

school’s hall with a welcome by 

the kapa haka students through a 

walkway of flag bearers. 

Principal Suzanne Newton 

gave a speech, which was followed 

by a highlight reel of 

Bruce’s medal winning matches 

in the triples and fours. 

She was put in the hot seat 

with questions from students. 

The ceremony was topped off by 

a parade around the courts and 

morning tea.

Kids learn better with a full stomach. 

That’s why our Government 

launched our lunches in school 

programme, which is now providing 

free and healthy school lunches to 

thousands of children across the 

country so that they can focus on 

what’s important - learning. 

Since we started rolling out free 

lunches in schools two years ago, 

around 63 million healthy lunches 

have been served and they now 

reach 220,000 students across the 

country, including many here in 

Canterbury. 

This programme is one of the ways 

that we’re helping to make everyday 

life more affordable for New 

Zealanders. For example, it saves 

families with two children at school 

around $62 a week or more than 

$2,000 a year. 

There’s no single solution to the 

cost of living pressures that families 

are feeling right now, but offering 

free lunches in schools is one way 

we’re helping. It’s part of a range 

of actions we’ve taken to support 

New Zealanders in the face of 

global inflation, including our new 

temporary cost of living payment, 

fuel tax cut, and more. 

As well as supporting families in 

Canterbury and around the country 

with the cost of living, our lunches 

in school programme has already 

created more than 2,300 jobs, which 

is great news for our communities. 

We’ve also been told by teachers and 

principals that it’s helping our kids 

focus and learn.

We tackle everything at McMaster & Heap. 

We are so fortunate to have a skilled 

experienced team of 11 veterinarians who 

each have their own area of expertise 

whether it be surgery, eyes, dentistry, 

chemotherapy, ultrasound and imaging, 

medicine… the list goes on. 

One of our veterinarians, Lynne, has a 

keen interest in surgery, whether it be 

abdominal, skin or bone. Most weeks 

orthopaedic surgery is performed in our 

sterile surgical suite with the dedicated 

surgical team. We see many patients for 

lameness issues and one of the most 

common injuries we see is “Anterior 

cruciate ligament rupture ( ACL)”. This is 

a very common injury in Athletes and 

skiers and also dogs. In the canine patient, 

this injury needs to be surgically repaired 

for the dog to gain full mobility again, 

enjoy life and be pain free. It occurs in any 

age dog - an active working dog or an 

overweight elderly dog. There are many 

surgical procedures out there to repair 

this stifle instability but Lynne performs 

a procedure TPLO, which has shown to 

give better results than many of the other 

procedures out there, predicting 90% 

return to normal limb function. 

Hunter, a 5 year old Crossbred recently had 

a TPLO performed due to a chronic ACL 

tear. Hunter had been chronically lame 

for 2 years and was increasingly worse 

with exercise. His hind leg was becoming 

weaker and more muscle wasted and he 

was unable to enjoy any form of outdoor 

activity. His favourite activity was chasing 

wheels of anything that moved. 

Radiographs were taken of his stifles and 

hips and cruciate disease was strongly 

suspected. Hunter underwent the knife 

so to speak, and so far so good. He is 

recuperating well and weight bearing on 

his operated leg. Hopefully his return to full 

function will be uneventful. 

Chester, an adorable 1 year old ginger cat 

was seen on a Sunday for a non weight 

bearing hind leg lameness. He’d been 

missing for 4 days, and arrived home on 

3 legs. A nasty infected femoral fracture 

was diagnosed on X-rays and he had a 

large open wound present too. He was 

so brave, purring and rolling around for 

tummy tickles through most of the exam, 

seemingly not in pain. 

The fracture itself was difficult to repair and 

the fact it was an open fracture increased 

the surgical complication rate and chances 

of implant failure. The owner opted for 

amputation and Chester breezed through 

his surgery today, on waking up he was 

back to his cheeky, very cute, happy self.

Century-old club 

gets new look

a grant to buy new 

uniforms. 

Club president Brenda 

Bickerstaff applied for 

the ANZ netball grant, 

as the 101-year-old club 

needed help to update its 

uniforms. 

“The club has been 

around since 1921 and 

we are wanting to move 

the club forward into a 

new century and update 

things,” she said. 

The club was awarded 

more than 100 new 

training tops to help 

relieve the financial 

burden of updating the 

uniforms. 

“I never thought in a 

million years we would 

get a grant as I know how 

popular this is and there 

so many deserving clubs 

out there in New Zealand,” 

said Bickerstaff. 

“We’re a new committee 

who have inherited a 

wonderful club – but we’re 

running off the smell 

of an oily rag. We get 

fatigued asking members 

for money, we don’t want 

to have to put the fees on 

the members because we’re 

trying to keep the game 

accessible for all.” 

When the club was 

formed, the game was very 

different, Bickerstaff said. 

“They played nine a 

side games and defenders 

weren’t allowed to defend. 

Women weren’t allowed 

to run because they didn’t 

want to work up a sweat. 

“They wore old black

Police station to reopen after concerns

THE HORNBY police station 

could reopen in eight weeks after 

ongoing concerns from residents 

over its closure. 

The Greater Hornby Residents 

Association asked police why it 

was closed, with chairman Marc 

Duff saying the community 

was concerned that with crime 

increasing, they were not able to 

go to their local police station. 

The association was told by 

police the station had 

been temporarily closed 

because a previous front 

desk staff member had 

been transferred to 

Rolleston and the replacement, 

who had been 

trained, had decided to 

leave. 

However, a second 

recruitment drive to find a new 

person for the front desk has just 

closed, so police are aiming to 

reopen the station to the public

in about eight weeks. 

The station has been 

closed since February. 

A closed “until further 

notice” sign is hanging on 

the station door. 

But the police website 

says the station is open 

from Monday to Friday, 

9am-4pm. 

However, there is a note to call 

ahead in case of “unforeseen 

closures”. 

On the sign, people are directed 

to go to the Christchurch 

Central station or call 111. 

After a recent meeting, the association 

agreed to compile a letter 

expressing the community’s 

concerns. It was then directed to 

take the letter to the central station, 

which it did last week. 

Crime reporting unit Sergeant 

Straton Logan replied, thanking 

the association for raising its 

concerns and acknowledged the 

community’s frustration. 

“It is our purpose to ensure 

that the community is safe and 

feels safe and I understand that, 

within the Hornby community, 

having access to a staff member 

through the front counter plays a 

pivotal part in this,” he said. 

“The factors that have 

contributed to the prolonged 

closure of the Hornby police 

station front counter is due to 

staff shortages in our department 

and the out of the ordinary 

demands that Covid-19 has 

placed on the NZ police service.”

Mum’s braised ginger 

chicken 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

¼ cup (60ml) sesame oil 

6cm piece old ginger (see Note), 

skin on, sliced 

6-8 chicken thigh fillets, cut in 

half 

1 tsp salt 

1 tsp caster (superfine) sugar 

1 tsp light soy sauce 

1 Tbsp Shaoxing wine 

Steamed rice, to serve 

Add the chicken pieces and 

stir-fry until they start to brown, 

4-5 minutes. 

Add the salt, sugar, 2½ Tbsp 

water and soy sauce and stir. 

Cover and allow to simmer for 

7-8 minutes. 

Pour the Shaoxing wine over 

the top and simmer briefly, until 

the chicken is cooked through. 

Serve hot with steamed rice and 

enjoy.

First impressions at your open home 

There is an old saying about first 

impressions, in that you never get 

a second chance to make a great 

one. When you consider selling 

your home, the impression that 

prospective buyer has when they 

walk through the property could be 

the make or break of their decisionmaking 

process in the sale. 

Presentation is key 

Your sales agent will often work with 

you and suggest components such as 

property styling, which can assist in 

presenting the property in the best 

possible light to a prospective buyer. 

Your agent may make suggestions 

about minor improvements that will 

be key to the sale and highlight the 

features that are the best-selling 

points of the home to show during 

the opening. 

Take care of minor 

maintenance 

The little things can make all the 

difference when it comes to showing 

prospective buyers through your 

home. Even something as small as 

light globes can make an impact on 

the success of the open and your 

sales agent will want to turn on lights 

to brighten up rooms. Maintenance 

items may also affect the final sale 

and have the potential to be dealbreakers 

if items are not repaired. 

If you have had tenants in the 

property, it is beneficial to speak with 

your property manager and sales 

agent about minor improvements 

that may need to be carried out 

and factor this into preparing the 

property for the sale and opening. 

If the tenants are to remain during

Don’t forget the exterior 

If you have a property with lawns and 

gardens, employing a gardener to 

tidy up the lawns and gardens in the 

week leading up to your first open 

is beneficial to ensure that they are 

presented at their best for potential 

buyers. 

For properties with trees on the 

perimeter, cleaning out the gutters 

and washing exteriors may be an area 

to consider as prospective buyers will 

take the maintenance of these areas 

into account. Clogged gutters have 

the potential to lead to roof leaks 

during wet weather and building 

inspectors will pick up these items 

during their inspections. Having 

these rectified before the sale will 

save potential stress down the track.

Insights from the Real Estate 

Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), 

Canterbury saw an annual increase 

in the median price of 13.6%, from 

$597,000 to $678,000. 

Compared to July 2021 

• Median Price up 13.6% 

• Sales Count down 29.6% 

• Days to Sell increased 7 days 

Compared to June 2022 

• Median Price down 1.0% 

• Seasonally adjusted median price 

down 0.6% 

• Sales Count down 8.3% 

• Seasonally adjusted sales count 

down 1.9% 

• Days to Sell is the same 

JEN BAIRD REINZ CEO “The 

median property price across 

New Zealand decreased 1.8% to 

$810,000. This is the first decrease 

in annual median price movement for 

New Zealand overall since July 2011. 

Moving from June to July, we note 

a 4.7% decrease, and the seasonally 

adjusted figures show a decrease of 

2.8%, indicating weaker performance 

than expected. “We saw a significant 

upswing in prices since the initial 

COVID-19 lockdown in early 2020, 

reaching a peak in November 2021. 

While the median property price 

is showing an annual decrease, 

affordability remains an obstacle for 

many — which is now being driven 

by rising interest rates, inflation 

and tighter lending criteria. “In 

more affordable regions, we have 

continued to see significant growth 

compared to larger markets such 

as Auckland and Wellington. Buyer 

demand remains intact in Canterbury, 

and specifically Christchurch, 

reflected in the region’s strong 

performance over the past months. 

“Real estate markets are cyclical, 

after a period of strong upward 

movement, it is slowing. However, 

prices tend to decrease more slowly 

than they increase and after a period 

of stability, the market tends to regain 

momentum and median prices start 

their climb. We are in the easing part 

of the market cycle,” Baird says.
