We have been very<br />

fortunate to fill all of the<br />

vacant positions on the Haeata Community Campus Board. Our congratulations to<br />

newly elected Kelley Gibson, Irihapiti Mahuika, and re-elected Rebecca Wilkinson<br />

and Ryan Wilson. We are grateful for your support of our kura!<br />

On Friday, 19 <strong>August</strong> <strong>2022</strong> Years 11, 12 and 13 enjoyed themselves at the Senior<br />

Formal. It was a wonderful occasion and a right of passage for our rangitahi. Our<br />

thanks go to the plethora of sponsors, including Programmed Maintenance, Cyclone,<br />

Wainoni Pak N Save, New World Prestons, Glam for the Gram, Rangiora Bakery<br />

and Anglea from Ricoh, all of whom gave so generously to support our rangatahi.<br />

As we begin Week 6 of Term 3 I notice a real fatigue setting in amongst Kaimahi<br />

and ākonga alike. Term 3 is traditionally the hardest term due to high workloads<br />

for senior students, challenging weather and a high absenteeism across the kura. If<br />

whānau need assistance at this time please make contact with the kura to ensure we<br />

are aware. Spring officially begins on Thursday, 1st September <strong>2022</strong> and hopefully<br />

we will see an improvement in the weather and the number of sunshine hours<br />

during the day.<br />

Cell phones continue to be a problem at kura and are contributing to many of<br />

the problems faced by our rangatahi. Cyber bullying continues to erode many of<br />

the relationships they form at kura and often results in negative and unwanted<br />

behaviours during the school day. I have included here the key messages we are<br />

currently consulting on for our updated Cell Phone policy. We are keen for your<br />

feedback.<br />

• Cell phones are prohibited from use in classrooms and any other area in which<br />

academic work is being done unless otherwise instructed by the teacher.<br />

• Headphones and other Bluetooth enabled devices are not permitted to be worn<br />

in class and must be put away securely by the student in any academic area.<br />

• Cell phones are not to be used in bathrooms.<br />

• Once inside the school, students must store their cell phones/electronic<br />

devices in a location that is not visible to the teacher or other students, even<br />

though they are on SILENT. It is the student’s responsibility to keep their<br />

device(s) secure.<br />

• If a cell phone/electronic device rings, vibrates, or is used for any reason without<br />

teacher permission, or is visible anytime during class time or if a student is caught<br />

using it on campus during class time, a staff member may confiscate the device<br />

and a whānau member may come and pick it up.<br />

• Under no circumstance is voice recording, photographing or video recording<br />

allowed anywhere on the school campus.<br />

• Texting and cell phone use is permitted during the lunch breaks in the cafeteria.<br />

• All cell phone use must be respectful and non-disruptive to students and staff.<br />

• Phones must remain on silent at all times throughout the school day.<br />

• Whānau, please note you can contact your ākonga via their cell phone during the<br />

lunch breaks<br />

• In the event of an immediate emergency, please call the school’s main office on<br />

03 930 0110<br />

• The staff of Haeata Community Campus requests your FULL cooperation with<br />

our policy.<br />

• It should be noted that, the school nor any of its employees are responsible for<br />

the loss or damage to any student’s phone or electronic device whether that<br />

device is in the student’s possession or confiscated by the staff.<br />

• It is the responsibility of the student to adhere to this policy and to secure his or<br />

her belongings at all times. Classes and or instruction will not be stopped to deal<br />

with or search for lost phones/devices.<br />

Kōmanawa Hapori Update<br />

Ko Māui Hangarau is a Māori Tech and innovation<br />

Summit for rangatahi Māori, whanau and educators that<br />

aims to awaken, inspire, and ignite rangatahi to see the<br />

infinite opportunities in the tech industry. Supported<br />

by the Ministry of Education, the event is designed<br />

to capture the hearts and minds of rangatahi who<br />

have an interest in Digital Innovation, Technology and<br />

Entrepreneurship. Haeata Community campus was very<br />

lucky to be able to host the 11th event at our kura.<br />

Our rangatahi were awakened, inspired and ignited!<br />

Innovation in technology for the benefit of people<br />

Services Update<br />

A selection of Māori and Pasifika ākonga from all over<br />

Ōtautahi were lucky enough to be able to participate in<br />

this event. We listened to an amazing line up of Māori<br />

Tech Entrepreneurs who shared some korero about<br />

some of the cool mahi they are working on, their journey<br />

and experiences, Kendal Flutey, Anton Matthews, and<br />

Taikawa Tamati-Eliffe.<br />

Prime Minister &<br />

MP’s afternoon tea<br />

On Friday 5 <strong>August</strong> our Manukura and Head<br />

Student Leaders had the privilege of going to<br />

Burnside High School for a Student Leaders<br />

and MP’s afternoon tea. During this event,<br />

our Whatakura/Head boy, Bailey Kaa and<br />

Mareikura/Head girl, Caoimhe Hungerford<br />

got to meet and listen to Prime Minister,<br />

Jacinda Ardern as well as MP’s Megan Woods,<br />

Poto Williams, Rino Tirikatene, Duncan<br />

Webb, Tracey McLellan and Sarah Pallet. Our<br />

rangatahi also reconnected with some of their<br />

peers from other kura that they have met<br />

through Student Leadership opportunities<br />

earlier in the year.<br />

and Zac Allen attended the Mayor’s Duke<br />

of Edinburgh Award Ceremony, with Mayor<br />

Lianne Dalziel at the Christchurch Civic<br />

Chambers today.<br />

During this prestigious ceremony ākonga<br />

received bronze, silver or gold awards for<br />

their achievements.<br />

These ākonga were supported and encouraged by Staff Ra Waaka through our<br />

Services Programme.<br />
