LOW RISK: A city council report recommended several changes to the Mairehau and Inwoods Rds intersection but the community board opted to
leave it as it is.
No changes for busy
Parklands intersection
• By Natalie Pham
SAFETY improvements will not
be made at a busy intersection
in Parklands.
Waitai Coastal-Burwood
Community Board members
debated whether to approve several
proposed improvements at
the Mairehau Rd and Inwoods
Rd intersection.
But the majority of board
members opted to maintain the
status quo, in spite of objections
voiced by members Celeste
Donovan and Bebe Frayle.
City council staff recommended
changing the lane
marking, kerb alignment,
island and road surface. Staff
also noted the presence of two
approach lanes added risk for
pedestrians.
But community board
chair Kelly Barber said the
majority of residents did not
want the changes. “Our job
is to look at the city council’s
recommendation and listen to
the community’s feedback,” he
said.
The project will now be
considered in the future city
council annual or long term
plans. One of the main concerns
from residents was over the
proposal to merge the two exit
lanes on Inwoods Rd into one.
Board member Phil Mauger
seconded the motion to not
approve the changes, stating he
would be “snarly” at the location
of the proposed island if he was
a bus driver.
Mitre 10 MeGA FerryMeAd lends A
HelpinG HAnd – prOJeCt plAyGrOUnd!
A brand new adventure playground has given South New Brighton
School another reason to celebrate as it marks its centenary
this year, with the support of Mitre 10 Helping Hands - Project
Playground.
Established in 1922, the school in the coastal east of Christchurch
with approximately 500 students, has long been at the heart of a
vibrant community hit hard by a series of events.
The Christchurch earthquakes forced many families to relocate out
of the area after their homes were red zoned, and caused the loss
of the joint Council and school hall and other facilities. After a long
wait, the rebuild of the school hall was to begin in 2020, when an
electrical fire destroyed a block of five classrooms, a library and
resource rooms.
The school’s Project Playground submission described the state of
the school’s existing play equipment as “dismal, however, any hope
of upgrading the playground area had to be put on hold while
classroom and hall design, plan and build were prioritised.
Principal Sue Walls said: “Seeing your school injured in that way is
difficult for people and it takes a long time to repair and recover.
To have something new around the school feels like the rebuilding
is starting to happen after 10 years, that we’re starting to get some
positive things happening.
“We’re a real community here and the wider community uses our
playground during the weekends and holidays, so the school is
really the hub. We’re a fair distance from another playground so to
have one that people can come to with the whole family is special.”
Despite Covid disruption and manufacturing delays, the playground
opened early on Friday 17 June to the delight of students and
teachers alike, with Mitre 10 MEGA Ferrymead, who also helped with
demolition and the new fence build, putting on a sausage sizzle for
the long anticipated opening celebration.
Special thanks to The Playground People for their hard work and
dedication to the ‘Project Playground’ builds.
Businesses pitch in for patrol car
BURWOOD Pegasus
Community Watch has a new
set of wheels thanks to the
generosity of local businesses.
The community watch group,
which comes under the umbrella
of the Community Patrols New
Zealand, has been patrolling a
large area of the city’s eastern
suburbs for the last 27 years.
President Diane Dixey, who
has been with the group for 25
years, said it works closely with
police to report any suspicious
activity requiring their attention.
“We patrol residential,
business, and industrial
areas, parks, schools, shopping
areas, rest homes, hospital,
sports clubs and pools to deter
or identify criminal activity,” she
said.
“We’re always on the lookout
for stolen vehicles or stolen
property and for missing
persons.”
After a rise in reports of arson,
the group expanded its patrol
area to include Bottle Lake
Forest – which is owned and
managed by Rayonier Matariki
Forests.
Rayonier Matariki Forests
general manager of operations
Mark Grover said arson
attempts have dropped since the
community watch group started
regular patrols.
“[The group] have also come
across an injured cyclist and
located lost children and dogs.
Traffic lights
could cost
$750,000
•From page 1
Some residents said a
roundabout or traffic lights would
be a better solution.
Board member Linda Stewart
agreed: “I’d rather go straight for
the light than bits and pieces that
are really just bandages.
“We’re going to make a decision,
make one that is going to work for
the long term because Mairehau is
a really busy road,” she said.
While Frayle was in favour of the
signalised intersection, she said the
board needs to be “realistic” about
what they can achieve.
The project was prompted last
year after residents raised concerns
about drivers failing to stop at
the stop sign when turning from
Inwoods Rd into Mairehau Rd.
In 2018, a refuge island was built
on Mairehau Rd after feedback
from the community highlighted
the safety issues and barrier to pedestrians
due to the long crossing
distance.
Said city council traffic engineer
Gautham Praburam: “Implementation
of a roundabout or traffic signals
would be considerably more
expensive than what is proposed.”
Traffic signals are estimated to
cost about $500,000 to $750,000.
The report also noted that the
risk at the intersection is too low to
warrant traffic lights.
fortunate to fill all of the
vacant positions on the Haeata Community Campus Board. Our congratulations to
newly elected Kelley Gibson, Irihapiti Mahuika, and re-elected Rebecca Wilkinson
and Ryan Wilson. We are grateful for your support of our kura!
On Friday, 19 August 2022 Years 11, 12 and 13 enjoyed themselves at the Senior
Formal. It was a wonderful occasion and a right of passage for our rangitahi. Our
thanks go to the plethora of sponsors, including Programmed Maintenance, Cyclone,
Wainoni Pak N Save, New World Prestons, Glam for the Gram, Rangiora Bakery
and Anglea from Ricoh, all of whom gave so generously to support our rangatahi.
As we begin Week 6 of Term 3 I notice a real fatigue setting in amongst Kaimahi
and ākonga alike. Term 3 is traditionally the hardest term due to high workloads
for senior students, challenging weather and a high absenteeism across the kura. If
whānau need assistance at this time please make contact with the kura to ensure we
are aware. Spring officially begins on Thursday, 1st September 2022 and hopefully
we will see an improvement in the weather and the number of sunshine hours
during the day.
Cell phones continue to be a problem at kura and are contributing to many of
the problems faced by our rangatahi. Cyber bullying continues to erode many of
the relationships they form at kura and often results in negative and unwanted
behaviours during the school day. I have included here the key messages we are
currently consulting on for our updated Cell Phone policy. We are keen for your
feedback.
• Cell phones are prohibited from use in classrooms and any other area in which
academic work is being done unless otherwise instructed by the teacher.
• Headphones and other Bluetooth enabled devices are not permitted to be worn
in class and must be put away securely by the student in any academic area.
• Cell phones are not to be used in bathrooms.
• Once inside the school, students must store their cell phones/electronic
devices in a location that is not visible to the teacher or other students, even
though they are on SILENT. It is the student’s responsibility to keep their
device(s) secure.
• If a cell phone/electronic device rings, vibrates, or is used for any reason without
teacher permission, or is visible anytime during class time or if a student is caught
using it on campus during class time, a staff member may confiscate the device
and a whānau member may come and pick it up.
• Under no circumstance is voice recording, photographing or video recording
allowed anywhere on the school campus.
• Texting and cell phone use is permitted during the lunch breaks in the cafeteria.
• All cell phone use must be respectful and non-disruptive to students and staff.
• Phones must remain on silent at all times throughout the school day.
• Whānau, please note you can contact your ākonga via their cell phone during the
lunch breaks
• In the event of an immediate emergency, please call the school’s main office on
03 930 0110
• The staff of Haeata Community Campus requests your FULL cooperation with
our policy.
• It should be noted that, the school nor any of its employees are responsible for
the loss or damage to any student’s phone or electronic device whether that
device is in the student’s possession or confiscated by the staff.
• It is the responsibility of the student to adhere to this policy and to secure his or
her belongings at all times. Classes and or instruction will not be stopped to deal
with or search for lost phones/devices.
SLOW DOWN: The Cowes St and Orrick Cres roundabout was put in to stop
vehicles doing burnouts.
Roundabout to
stop burnouts
could stay
• By Natalie Pham
A TEMPORARY roundabout in Avondale
has proven to be effective at preventing
burnouts.
The roundabout at Cowes St and Orrick
Cres was put in by the city council to
determine if it could stop cars performing
burnouts.
If the trial proves successful, the
roundabout could stay.
The modular roundabout also includes
speed humps, no parking lines, traffic
separators and flexi posts.
Waitai Coastal-Burwood Community
Board chairman Kelly Barber said he
has not received any complaints from
residents about burnouts.
“Hearing from the people that I
know, the roundabout has been effective,”
he said.
“I am sure that people will contact me if
anything happens.”
However, Barber said some residents
are concerned the problem might move to
another location.
Construction of the roundabout started
in late July and finished on August 12.
It was part of the city council’s Slow
Speed Neighbourhoods programme.
Public consultation on the Avondale
project was open from November
to December last year. It received 62
submissions.
Residents highlighted issues with
driver behaviour issues around the area,
particularly at the Cowes St and Orrick
Cres intersection.
a lot of disruptions so it was
nice to have everyone get back
into it.”
Even after playing the
violin since she was five, the
coastal area resident said
it was normal to still get
nervous before a performance,
especia ly for a large crowd.
“There’s this heightened
sense of adrenaline before
you go on stage. I definitely
sti l get nervous, which is
important,” she said. “It’s
about channelling the energy
required for a performance.”
“BEST POTENTIAL”
Call for
something
to be done
about
Bromley
‘stench’
• By Emily Moorhouse
RESIDENTS LIVING near the
Bromley wastewater treatment
plant have been “coping with the
stench” for weeks now and want
something done to fix it.
The wastewater treatment plant
caught fire in November and has
been emitting an unpleasant sme l
ever since, causing frustration
among residents.
Katinka Visser has lived in
Bromley for 35 years, and said
while the stench hasn’t been as
bad during the new year for her,
she sometimes felt as though she
couldn’t breathe.
“I’ve had three nights that I
virtua ly couldn’t breathe, it was
that bad, there’s like a fog and it’s
just sitting. ’
She said even after putting her
head under the blankets, she
could sti l sme l the stench.
Visser said because the wind
has been coming from a southerly
direction lately, she hasn’t been
experiencing the sme l as strongly,
but knows that residents close by
do.
“I’m so thankful that I’m not
affected as much as most people,”
she said.
“There are people way, way
worse off than me.”
Money
puts hand
up for local
elections
• By Emily Moorhouse
FORMER Coastal-Burwood
chairwoman Kim Money has
made a bid to return to local body
politics, with plans to stand for
council as an independent for the
Coastal Ward.
Celeste Donovan
is the current
Coastal Ward
counci lor and
said it was always
great for democracy
when you
had a choice.
“It’s
encouraging to hear another
woman is standing and there wi l
be others putting up a hand closer
to the election date,” Donovan
said.
Money was the board’s
chairwoman in 2016, but didn’t
stand for re-election in 2019 due
to personal circumstances.
Now she says those
circumstances have changed
and the timing is right for her to
throw her hat back in the arena.
“I’m keen to get back again and
represent this community that I
love so much,” she said. “We really
do need that experience from the
coast sitting a the council table
and I would love to do that for my
community.”
Money said it had been
unfortunate she couldn’t stand
again in 2019 as there were a few
unfinished things she needed to
do. • Turn to page 4
McMaster & Heap
Veterinary practice
ORTHOPEDICS
AT McMASTER & HEAP
We tackle everything at McMaster & Heap.
We are so fortunate to have a skilled
experienced team of 11 veterinarians who
each have their own area of expertise
whether it be surgery, eyes, dentistry,
chemotherapy, ultrasound and imaging,
medicine… the list goes on.
One of our veterinarians, Lynne, has a
keen interest in surgery, whether it be
abdominal, skin or bone. Most weeks
orthopaedic surgery is performed in our
sterile surgical suite with the dedicated
surgical team. We see many patients for
lameness issues and one of the most
common injuries we see is “Anterior
cruciate ligament rupture ( ACL)”. This is
a very common injury in Athletes and
skiers and also dogs. In the canine patient,
this injury needs to be surgically repaired
for the dog to gain full mobility again,
enjoy life and be pain free. It occurs in any
age dog - an active working dog or an
overweight elderly dog. There are many
surgical procedures out there to repair
this stifle instability but Lynne performs
a procedure TPLO, which has shown to
give better results than many of the other
procedures out there, predicting 90%
return to normal limb function.
Hunter, a 5 year old Crossbred recently had
a TPLO performed due to a chronic ACL
tear. Hunter had been chronically lame
for 2 years and was increasingly worse
with exercise. His hind leg was becoming
weaker and more muscle wasted and he
was unable to enjoy any form of outdoor
activity. His favourite activity was chasing
wheels of anything that moved.
Radiographs were taken of his stifles and
hips and cruciate disease was strongly
suspected. Hunter underwent the knife
so to speak, and so far so good. He is
recuperating well and weight bearing on
his operated leg. Hopefully his return to full
function will be uneventful.
Chester, an adorable 1 year old ginger cat
was seen on a Sunday for a non weight
bearing hind leg lameness. He’d been
missing for 4 days, and arrived home on
3 legs. A nasty infected femoral fracture
was diagnosed on X-rays and he had a
large open wound present too. He was
so brave, purring and rolling around for
tummy tickles through most of the exam,
seemingly not in pain.
The fracture itself was difficult to repair and
the fact it was an open fracture increased
the surgical complication rate and chances
of implant failure. The owner opted for
amputation and Chester breezed through
his surgery today, on waking up he was
back to his cheeky, very cute, happy self.
At McMaster & Heap we offer clients many
options. At the end of the day we aim to
eliminate patient suffering, save lives and
work with clients to decide on the best
outcomes for them and their pets. It is a
team based approach and we are here
to help you in the decision making and
care for your pets as we would our own.
I believe every patient that enters our
practice deserves Gold Star treatment and
the very best veterinary medicine has to
offer. That is and will always be our goal.
Amazing Grace wins songwriting comp
TALENTED: Year 13 student Grace Lawrence was praised
by St Andrew’s College head of music Duncan Ferguson
for her performance on stage.
ST ANDREW’S College head
prefect Grace Lawrence has won
the Play It Strange songwriting
competition.
The year 13 student received
an $8000 New Zealand On Air
‘special tracks’ grant to record
her song and make a music video,
and $1000 from the Rockshop.
The announcement was made
at a special school assembly and
came as a complete surprise for
the top music student.
Grace said she was “in shock”.
“I never expected to win or
even become a finalist, after
already making the finals of this
year’s Play It Strange peace song
competition.
“I’m so happy and very grateful.”
Mike Chunn, former bass
player for Split Enz and chief
executive of Play It Strange, said
Grace was no stranger to the
music awards. She was twice a
finalist in the organisation’s peace
song competition, and a finalist
in the 2021 Lion Foundation
songwriting competition.
“With her winning song this
year Grace has reached an engaging
and varied lyric and musical
standard. She is a natural and her
future is bright.”
The Lion Foundation songwriting
competition is the trust’s
flagship songwriting competition.
It attracted 352 entries this year
from year 9-13 students across
New Zealand. Following the
school presentation, Grace performed
the coming-of-age song,
Differently Now, to the assembled
students and teachers.
“I couldn’t have asked for more
support from my teachers and St
Andrew’s College over the last
five years,” she said.
“They are incredible and I
wouldn’t be able to do it without
them.”
Grace has been a prolific
songwriter on piano and strings,
and utilised synths and drums to
create a more electronic sound,
said St Andrew’s College head of
music Duncan Ferguson.
“We are incredibly proud of
Grace.”
The multi-talented musician,
songwriter and performer has
already achieved great success,
winning the 2021 New Zealand
Chamber Music Contest as a
violinist in the St Andrew’s
College trio Vich Perfect.
She was also concertmaster
of the New Zealand Secondary
Schools’ Orchestra and has
had several lead roles in school
productions.
St Andrew’s College rector
Christine Leighton said Grace’s
creativity is an inspiration for
many students.
“As a head prefect this
year, she has balanced
many responsibilities and
commitments. It was fantastic
to surprise her with this award in
our cultural assembly, which
I know will mean so much to
her.”
The winning song will feature
on the 2022 Play it Strange album.
Grace will perform it at the
annual Play it Strange awards in
Auckland in November.
