FROM THE
EDITOR
The 2022 Georgia football season
officially begins on Saturday in Atlanta …
‘Duck, Lanning! … The Dawgs are on the Hunt!’
VANCE LEAVY
EDITOR IN CHIEF
With Week 0 officially in the
books, the 2022 college
football season has officially
begun. And how sweet it is that our
reigning National Champion Bulldogs
make their season debut on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta versus
the Oregon Ducks in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.
Mirroring the start of the 2021 season, we at Bulldawg Illustrated
wanted our cover to be extra special, so we again reached out to
UGA alum and Blackshear, Georgia native Mack Williams for his
stellar artistic abilities. I wasn’t sure if Mack could top last year’s
“Time for a Dabo of Mayo” cover for the kickoff game in Charlotte,
but I’m happy to report he once again nailed it with this issue’s
“Duck Lanning” cover. Without a doubt, longtime BI contributor
and cartoonist legend Jack Davis surely would approve of this
colorful and clever cover.
While Mack and I had some fun with the Ducks and Coach
Lanning, don’t for one second think that we (and hopefully all of
Bulldog Nation) underestimate the Oregon football program and
their new coach. There is nothing but respect for the Ducks from the
Pac-12. I’m confident they will show-up in Atlanta ready to show the
college football world that they are fully capable of taking down a
SEC team like our Bulldogs.
Opening games with panache
certainly get the juices flowing, but
as Coach Smart allowed last week
they also come with a great deal of
uncertainty. Yes, this 2022 Bulldogs’
team is loaded with talent, but until
toe meets leather on game day,
their true abilities aren’t fully known.
Can Georgia’s defense be anywhere
close to the historic 2021 unit (that
Coach Lanning had a ton to do
with) that sent so many players to
the NFL this past April? And on the
other side of the ball, will Georgia’s
running backs prove to be as
invaluable as Zamir White and James
Cook were last season? Oh yeah, our Bulldogs also are replacing
all-world punter and kickoff extraordinaire, Jake Camarda.
Like I said above … lots of uncertainty.
Nonetheless, I have extreme confidence that Kirby’s 2022
canines will be ready when the opening whistle sounds
on Saturday afternoon. The reason is because of the stellar
leadership of this 2022 team. I chose this photo for my page
because I love seeing offensive lineman Warren McClendon and
linebacker Nolan Smith battling during the G-Day game. Oh yeah,
it also didn’t hurt that Warren (from Brunswick) and Nolan (from
Savannah) are fellow 912 area code brethren, like myself.
And while I’m in the 912, don’t forget Stetson Bennett (from
Blackshear). I can’t wait to see No. 13 lead this team even more this
season. Last year, he did amazing things with his arms and legs.
This season, I look forward to him adding his voice even more to
his assets. Clearly, there will be games when his team needs his
vocal leadership and I fully expect Stet to rise to the occasion.
Enough of my two cents … it’s now time for me to switch gears
and discuss what all is in this 64-page issue.
Jeff Dantzler sets the stage early with his column (page 12)
by discussing what victories in blockbuster opening games
have meant to the Georgia football program through the years.
JD goes back as far as the 40s to last year in his space. There’s
no denying what the victory over Clemson meant to the 2021
national champions.
Much like the 2022 Georgia team, our sports writing team
has some youngsters ready to make their mark this season. I
introduced Coby Serina to our readers back in the spring and
I’m happy report we’ve added Clay Watkins (another 912 byproduct).
Enjoy their writings this season and be sure to follow
their practice coverage at bulldawgillustrated.com over the
coming months.
On page 24, legendary football writer Tony Barhart (A.k.a. Mr.
College Football) is nice enough to lend his expertise to not only
Saturday’s game, but the overall state of college football. I love
Tony’s candidness about NIL (Name, Image, Likeness). We can
only hope some “real structure” will eventually be found.
Finally, for our sports coverage, don’t miss Hamilton Culpepper’s
excellent story about Jackson Muschamp (page 60). It’s refreshing
to see how Muschamp puts such
a priority on his family and friends
despite the rigors of playing college
football. And then on page 62, Loran
Smith delivers a dandy column on
the non-stop drive of Kirby Smart.
This issue is also special because it
is our 20th season of putting out our
publication. And as I’ve said many
times, no issue of BI is complete
without our social coverage.
WARREN MCCLENDON On pages 28 and 29, enjoy getting
AND NOLAN SMITH to know UGA alumna Amelia Dortch
PHOTO BY: GREG POOLE in our Georgia Girls feature. This
Grady grad, dynamo not only is
an outreach professional for the
US Department of Agriculture, but also has her own boutique
branding company.
Speaking of the Grady School of Journalism, Loran Smith’s
Bulldogs of the 4th Estate column (pg 54) this issue features
Georgia sports information director (and Grady grad) Claude
Felton. As so many already know, Claude is the G.O.A.T in his
field. Loran nails Claude’s exceptional leadership skills in always
making Georgia Athletics look their very best.
Finally and certainly not the least, there are 14 pages of Fan
Photos beginning on page 30 with the Kirby Smart Family
Foundation’s Giving Day. As JD coined 20 years ago, “You Never
Know who you’ll see in Bulldawg Illustrated.” And funny enough,
JD celebrated his 50th birthday this past week, which landed him
and his guests in BI (pages 52, 52). Welcome to the 50s Club, my
friend!
That does it for me. Please enjoy this issue of Bulldawg
Illustrated. See you in Atlanta for the Duck Hunt … Go Dawgs!!
Opening with a win versus a quality opponent
has proven to be fruitful when looking at the
history of the Bulldogs’ proud football program
JEFF DANTZLER
@jeffdantzlerTV
This is the year the Georgia
faithful have been waiting on.
The elephant, literally and
figuratively, has left the room.
The monkey, the gorilla, King
Kong is off Georgia’s back.
The pressure of not having won the
national title, despite so many close
calls, is gone. Georgia fans can take a
much more enjoyable - and optimistic
approach to the upcoming season.
With the question of will this be the
year answered in resounding fashion,
Fellow Sons and Daughters of Munson
and Dooley can put a cork in the poor
mouthing and punt the pessimism.
Kirby Smart’s program is a national
powerhouse. Georgia’s national
championship of 2021 is the crown jewel
of the most successful five year run in
Bulldogs football history. Now it’s time
to kick off the 2022 campaign, and the
expectations across the board, from
Smart to the players to the loyal fanbase
to the pollsters, is for Georgia to make it
a sixth consecutive tremendous season.
The reigning national champions are
ranked No. 3 in the preseason polls, and
set to battle No. 11 Oregon in a highly
anticipated showdown in Atlanta. These
Dawgs of 2022 are hungry to make their
mark, with a red and black clad throng
super-charged to enjoy the quest for
another championship.
Adding to the palpable excitement
is the elite opponent. Throw in Dan
Lanning, defensive coordinator
extraordinaire in Athens from 2019-
2021, as the Ducks new coach, and
former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix as
Oregon’s new quarterback, that mystery
of the effects of the familiarity has the
Bulldogs ready to burst from the starting
gates.
Playing a top flight opponent in the
season-opener is a no-brainer. There are
at least four factors that come to mind,
which we’ll cover before a brief but
surely enlightening Bulldogs seasonopening
history lesson.
1. Legendary Hall of Fame Georgia
Head Coach of 25 years Vince Dooley
always said that - to paraphrase - “you
know a lot more about your football
team when you play an outstanding
team in your first game.”
2. No doubt, especially when
playing in the mighty Southeastern
Conference, a premier opponent helps
a team get “battle tested” for the grind
of league play.
3. In the 12-game, conference
championship game era of college
football, the schedule is compressed and
open dates limited. So it makes sense
to play one of the best opponents on
a schedule coming off an open date.
Granted the other guy has one too - just
as Florida does in Georgia’s case - but
the first game is played following the
eight month open date of the offseason.
4. Smart, named National Coach of the
Year after leading his alma mater to the
2021 national title, has stressed how the
premium foe “gets a team’s attention”
throughout preseason camp. For recent
example, Georgia, ranked fifth, beat No.
3 Clemson 10-3 in Charlotte to open the
2021 championship campaign.
That victory over the Tigers, which
jump started the Bulldogs drive to the
promised land of collegiate football,
is the latest example of a magnificent
season that opened with a memorable
victory over a big name opponent.
From 1980-83, the most recent Golden
Era of Georgia Football prior to this
current streak of greatness, the Bulldogs
opened with victories against Tennessee
(16-15), Tennessee (44-0), Clemson (13-7)
and UCLA (19-8), respectively.
Mark Richt’s Bulldogs beat Clemson
to open the 2002 SEC championship
season and blew away Boise State in the
first game of the 2005 league title run.
Georgia finished No. 2 in 2007, starting
with a win over Oklahoma State.
Dooley’s first three SEC champions
began with a win over Mississippi State
(1966), a tie at Tennessee (1968) and
victory over Cal (1976).
Wally Butts led Georgia to four SEC
titles. Only the 1948 campaign, which
opened with Chattanooga, followed by
North Carolina, didn’t fit the trend. The
1942 national champions beat Kentucky,
the 1946 11-0 Bulldogs topped Clemson,
and in 1959 Georgia defeated Alabama
in the season opener.
Smart’s 2017 SEC champions opened
with a very good Appalachian State
team, followed by the trip to Notre
Dame.
Then there was Clemson last year.
The focus, the confidence, that sense
of belief from the victory, that feeling
was present throughout the national
title run.
Now it’s Oregon.
The last time Georgia kicked off
a season as the reigning national
champions was 1981. En route to a
second straight SEC title and national
title near miss, Georgia trounced
Tennessee 44-0 Between the Hedges in
the aforementioned opener.
It may be a shade ambitious to
think that Georgia would win by
a whopping margin - the silk suits
in the other Clark(e) County have
the Bulldogs favored by 17.5 - but
a win over the Ducks would be a
tremendous beginning to the 2022
season. A loss would hurt, but the
Bulldogs could still play themselves
back into contention.
Along with the obvious benefits of a
victory over Oregon, which in the 21st
century has emerged as one of the
country’s top programs, the Bulldogs
need some good mojo in Mercedes Benz
Stadium. There’s been a lot of heartbreak
there.
Atlanta’s new retractable dome will
once again host the SEC Championship
Game, as well as one of the two College
Football Playoff Semifinals on New Year’s
Eve in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. Could
the Bulldogs, realistically dreaming here,
possibly win twice more in the same
building this season? A victory over
Oregon, history shows, would be a great
indicator.
GEORGIA VS OREGON
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
Reigning National Champion Georgia, ranked third in the
preseason polls, battles No. 11 Oregon Saturday, September
3 at Mercedes Benz Stadium, in one of the most highly
anticipated openers of the 2022 collegiate football campaign.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m in this cross-country
showdown which pits two of college football’s top programs.
The winner gets a big early season jump in the quest of one of
those cherished four spots in the College Football Playoff.
Though this will be the first meeting between the Bulldogs
and Ducks since Georgia defeated Oregon 27-16 at Sanford
Stadium to kick off the 1977 season, there is a plethora of
familiarity between the two.
Headlining the subplots, Oregon’s first year head coach Dan
Lanning matriculated to Eugene from Athens, where he was
defensive coordinator for Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs the previous
three seasons. The Ducks new quarterback is well known in
Southeastern Conference circles, as Bo Nix, a three-year starter
at Auburn, transferred to Oregon.
Yes the Dogs and Ducks haven’t met in 45 years, but there
won’t be a lot of secrets come kickoff.
Lanning helped oversee exceptional stop units, including
the record-setting national championship unit of 2021, which
featured Outland/Bednarik Award winner Jordan Davis, Butkus
Award recipient Nakobe Dean and first overall NFL Draft pick
Travon Walker. A record setting five Bulldog defenders were
first round picks. A total of 15 Bulldogs were selected this past
spring, also a new record.
That’s a tremendous act to follow.
The Bulldogs are a betting favorite to return to the playoffs,
and the overwhelming pick to win the East Division and
advance to the SEC Championship Game, a testament to the
recruiting, development and talent accumulation under Smart’s
watch. But a great deal of ability and leadership from the dream
season of 2021 is now playing on Sundays.
Oregon returns a plethora of talent off a team that posted a
10-2 regular season and advanced to the PAC-12 Championship
Game, where the Ducks fell to Utah. A total of 16 starters
are back, including all five offensive linemen. That makes
the transition for new faces Lanning and Nix much more
comforting.
Last season, the Bulldogs beat Clemson in the opener
launching the title run. In the second week of the year in 2021,
Oregon toppled Ohio State in Columbus to vault into playoff
contention.
For the loser of this one, the road to glory is still open, but with
little margin for error. The winner will most likely be ranked no
worse than No. 3 heading into Week Two, with the victorious
head coach warning of “Rat Poison” for a team that will have
taken a large first step to a potentially stellar 2022 campaign.
TODD MONKEN (OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR) - Similarly to how
no one could stop talking about last year’s defense, no one can stop
talking about this year’s offense. Coach Monken and Stetson Bennett
have had the entire offseason to build on what they had in 2021. This
go ‘round Bennett has been with the ones. This offense should be more
connected than ever before!
DEFENSIVE LINE
STETSON BENNETT (QB, #13) - The terms experienced or veteran
cannot begin to describe what Bennett brings to the table. From being
a walk-on at Georgia, transferring to Jones County Junior College
in Mississippi, coming back to Georgia, riding the bench, winning
the starting job, winning Georgia its first Natty in 41 years, and then
coming back for another season!? You can make this stuff up! What’s
next for Bennett? You have to watch him to find out!
JALEN CARTER (DL, #88) - Three words … Top 10 Pick. That’s all
you need to know. In about a year Carter will be wreaking havoc in
the NFL, but for the time being, he lives in the nightmares of college
offensive lineman across the country. The 6-3, 300-pound Carter
definitely looks the part and if you spend any time milling over the film
you can see he for sure plays the part too. Looking for a big play? Make
sure to keep an eye on No. 88 on defense.
KENNY MCINTOSH (RB, #6) - McIntosh is looking to replace James
Cook’s role as the pass-catching back and he is certainly qualified.
Going into his 4th year of college ball, McIntosh has yes to drop a pass
thrown his way. His hands are elite. But as talented as he is with his
hands, he’s just as talented on his feet. He can go the distance and get
it done on the ground too!
DOMINICK BLAYLOCK (WR, #8) - This name may be surprising
to some since he hasn’t consistently been on the field in a while, but
it sounds like Blaylock is back and better than ever! Now that he’s fully
recovered, his greatest asset of route running should be on full display
on game day. Monken explained that Blaylock just “has a knack” for
getting open and making contested catches. He’s a certified playmaker
and is ready to ball out against Oregon.
KELEE RINGO (DB, #5) - Does this player even need an introduction
after his clutch “Chip-6” play? Bottom line, watch out for Ringo on
game day. Will any offense even dare throw his way? As a redshirtsophomore,
he’s projected a 1st round NFL Draft pick, so be warned if
you put someone opposite of him that doesn’t has the skills to match
his stellar shut-down skills.
DUCKS TO WATCH
BY CLAY WATKINS
DAN LANNING (HEAD COACH) - To start the season the
Bulldogs take the field against a familiar coach in Dan Lanning. After
being one of the masterminds behind the Dawg’s historic defense last
season, Lanning heads back to Georgia with intentions to slow down
what should be a potent Georgia offense this season. With extreme
familiarity within the Bulldogs program, it will be interesting to see
Lanning’s approach against UGA.
DAN LANNING
HEAD COACH
BO NIX (QB #10) - The former Auburn quarterback, who was SEC
Freshman of the Year back in 2019, will be looking for a fresh start
after an ankle injury ended his season in November of last year. He
is currently in a quarterback battle against Ty Thompson and Jay
Butterfield but is thought to be the leader after a strong Spring game.
The former Tiger has made multiple highlight reel plays in his career
but has been held to zero wins in his three tries against the Dawgs.
T. J. BASS (OL #56) - The 6-5, 318-pound, 5th year senior is
returning to the Ducks to lead their offensive line after starting all 14
games last season. Bass, who could have opted for the NFL draft, is a
dominant run blocker which the Dawg’s defense will need to exploit
in order to slow down the Duck’s rushing attack. Bass is a versatile
player, who can play in numerous positions across the line, but expect
the 2021 PAC-12 first-team player to be a critical piece up front for the
Ducks come week 1.
T.J. BASS
O-LINE
TROY FRANKLIN (WR #11) - The sophomore wide receiver from
Palo Alto, California is expected to have a huge season for the Ducks
after an impressive freshman campaign. Franklin racked up 18 catches
for 209 yards and two touchdowns last year while appearing in every
game for Oregon. The 6-3, 178-pound former 4-star recruit is a natural
pass catcher. The Duck’s offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham
recently noted that the Franklin has “bulked up” this offseason. Expect
to see Franklin line up in the receiver X spot on Saturday.
NOAH SEWELL (LB #1) - The former 5-star chose the Ducks
over the Dawgs in a heated recruiting battle and is one of the most
exciting inside linebackers in the country. Sewell, who has been
named to every award watchlist imaginable, amassed 114 total
tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception last
season, which earned him PAC-12 first team honors. Without a doubt,
Sewell must continue his disruptive play for the Ducks to slow down
the Bulldogs’ offense.
LINEBACKER
PHOTOS BY: ERIC EVANS/GODUCK.COM
BRANDON DORLUS (DL #3) - The Junior defensive end will
be looking to wreak havoc against Georgia’s stout offensive line,
particularly against Georgia’s two experienced tackles. Dorlus is
another Duck to earn first team PAC-12 honors. He is known more for
his exceptional run defense as opposed to his pass rush. Following his
stellar play last year, Dorlus is expected to make even more noise this
season for a very athletic Ducks’ defense.
American World War II hero Bill Bowerman was
Oregon’s Track and Field coach for 24 years, leading
the Ducks to four NCAA championships. He and Phil
Marcus Mariota is the most decorated player in
Oregon football history. He won the 2014 Heisman
Trophy, while leading the Ducks to the College
Football Playoff and a Rose Bowl win.
Oregon won the inaugural NCAA Basketball
FIVE KEYS
FOR A DAWGS VICTORY
1O-LINE - Both Georgia and Oregon have a great deal of confidence in the potential of their offensive lines. The Ducks return
all five starters from last season’s team that played for the PAC-12 championship. They are one of the best groups in college
football. Georgia has three starters back with a lot of depth, size and talent. And a new coach. Stacy Searels takes over for Matt
Luke, who succeeded Sam Pittman. That’s a tremendous cast of O-Line coaches in the Kirby Smart era. Whichever unit has the best
success against the opposing defensive front sets the tone for victory.
2RB AUTHORITY - Led by Kenny McIntosh, Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards, Georgia’s running backs must get the
tough yards, especially in third-and-short. Zamir White and James Cook leave big shoes to fill, but these three veterans have
all shown outstanding capabilities. Now they are in leading roles. Look for freshman Branson Robinson also to contribute,
particularly after the unfortunate ACL injury of Andrew Paul. The offensive line, White and Cook took center stage on arguably the
most important scoring drive in Georgia history, setting up the Stetson Bennett to Brock Bowers TD that put Georgia up 26-18 in the
fourth quarter of the National Championship Game. Can these Dogs dictate with the run? Oregon middle linebacker Noah Sewell is
one of the best in the game, and he will be on patrol behind a big, veteran defensive line.
3CONTAINMENT - In the 21st century, “The Quack Attack” has consistently been one of college football’s most explosive
offenses. Dan Lanning has a defensive background, but you can bet, with that offensive line, and Oregon’s big play, high
powered tradition, the former Georgia D-Coordinator will employ the wise “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy. Bo Nix
at quarterback is another factor. He’s an excellent athlete with big play ability. The former Auburn signal caller knows what he’ll
be facing across the line of scrimmage. Setting the edge, keeping containment, not giving up the big play, that’s essential against
Oregon. As is getting some negative yardage plays to put the Ducks “behind the chains.”
4KICKING GAME - In season-openers and bowl games, special teams performances are quite revealing. Who put in the
work, who made it a priority? In the Smart era, special teams have become a strength and often a weapon. Jack Podlesny is
back for a third season as the Bulldogs starting place-kicker, coming through with stellar campaigns and clutch postseason
kicks in 2020 and 2021. Perhaps the biggest shows for the Bulldogs to fill are those of All-American punter and kickoff ace Jake
Camarda, a fourth-round NFL pick. Australian born Brett Thorson will likely take the reins. Kearis Jackson is back as the lead punt
returner and McIntosh has been excellent on kickoff returns. Watch the fake!!! Lanning may just have something up his sleeve for
his old boss. Oregon also returns an excellent kicker. Charlotte, N.C. native Camden Lewis was second team All-PAC 12 a year ago.
Australian Tom Snee was one of the PAC 12’s best punters a year ago, but he has stepped away from the sport. So the Ducks will be
breaking in a new one for the season opener.
5EMOTION AND MOJO - There will be a partial Georgia crowd, hungry to cheer on the beloved reigning national
champions. Can the Bulldogs both feed off and manage those emotions? Smart’s teams have done a tremendous job of both,
maximizing a symbiotic relationship with the passionate fan base, fueling one another. Lanning, like Smart, will be preaching
all business. The Bulldogs also need some good mojo in Mercedes Benz. For longtime Bulldog fans, there was a lot of relief that
Georgia’s two College Football Playoff game victories last season were played in Miami and Indianapolis. Not New Orleans and
Atlanta. A lot of heartbreak in those two cities. The Bulldogs need to get it going in their backyard. Mercedes Benz will once again
host the SEC Championship Game and is one of the two sites - along with Tempe and the Fiesta Bowl - for a College Football Playoff
semifinal in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl.
THE DAWG BONES
GEORGIA VS OREGON
BY COBY SERINA
DAWG BONES OFFENSE- GEORGIA
When discussing any football team’s offense, you’re immediately drawn to the
quarterback. And you should be. More often than not, the quarterback is the face of
his team. So if you had to choose between Stetson Bennett and Bo Nix to lead your
team, Bennett’s probably getting picked nine times out of 10. Given the importance of
the quarterback position, Bennett provides the Dawgs a major advantage, especially
with his big play ability that stems from his quick thinking and mobility. Pair that with
Georgia’s elite tight end room and impressive offensive line, the Dawgs clearly have the
upper hand on the offensive side of the ball.
DAWG BONES DEFENSE- GEORGIA
Georgia doesn’t rebuild, they reload. Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith lead the defensive
front, but this year what should really stand out is Kelee Ringo and the secondary. They
return a ton of talent and have grown in the offseason. Oregon’s defense boost two
elite linebackers in Noah Sewell and Justin Flowe, but they should not be a match to the
Georgia Big Three on D.
DAWG BONES SPECIAL TEAMS- EVEN
Based off of 2021’s performances, both Georgia’s and Oregon’s projected starting
kickers, Camden Lewis and Jack Podlesny seem to be equally talented. Both of them
averaged 81% in field goal attempts (though Podlesny made 11 more attempts than
Lewis). The punters of both teams have yet to prove themselves. The Dawgs appear to
be going with Australian freshman Brett Thorson, while the Ducks look to field Andrew
Boyle, a transfer who has not seen much playing time.
DAWG BONES COACHING- GEORGIA
This one is easy. While Coach Smart and his staff experienced a lot of turnover in the
offseason, Oregon is debuting their new head coach, Dan Lanning, a product of the
Kirby Smart coaching tree. Lanning has the pedigree to make the Duck’s a soon-to-be
contender, but it’s safe to say Coach Smart’s experience prevails.
DAWG BONES OVERALL- GEORGIA
Georgia is the better team overall and Las Vegas doesn’t disagree, but they must guard
against self-inflicted wounds as they figure out their true leaders on game day. As has
been on the case under Coach Smart, look for the Dawgs to oppose their will against
Lanning’s Ducks in the second half.
A VIEW FROM ...
Atlanta
Legendary writer and college football analyst Tony Barnhart is
kind enough to take the time to help preview the Dawgs and
the Ducks. A first class gentleman, Tony is one of the most
renowned collegiate pigskin scribes of the last half century,
and we always love his expertise.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS
HIGH PROFILE OPENER BETWEEN
GEORGIA AND OREGON?
Coach Vince Dooley always said that it was
good to have a strong opening opponent
because after the game you don’t have
any illusions about your football team. I
think these kinds of openers are especially
helpful if you’ve got a good team and
Georgia has a good team. And even if you
don’t win the game, you’ll get credit from
the committee for having played it.
HOW ABOUT DAN LANNING AS
THE NEW HEAD COACH AND BO
NIX AT QB FOR OREGON?
Everyone knew Dan Lanning was going to
be a head coach sooner rather than later
and in Oregon he found a place where
Mario Cristobal had done some building
and had installed a toughness in the
program. This team has a very good chance
to win the Pac-12 North.
This was a good move for Bo Nix. As a
legacy player he was under a great deal
of pressure to deliver at Auburn. He has a
lot of athletic ability but needs to be more
consistent.
WITH THE UNPRECEDENTED
CHANGES IN COLLEGE
FOOTBALL THE LAST COUPLE
OF YEARS, HOW SOON DO
YOU THINK IT WILL BE BEFORE
THINGS SETTLE DOWN AND WE
GET SOME STABILITY?
If Notre Dame remains as an independent
I think we’re done with conference
expansion for now.
The transfer portal is here to stay, but
expect the creation of two windows- …
one in May and another in December, when
players can access the portal. It doesn’t
need to be open 365 days a year.
I have no clue on NIL and neither does
anybody else. If the federal government
doesn’t get involved after the midterm
elections, it could be years before there is
any real structure in NIL.
HOW FAR CAN OREGON GO THIS
YEAR?
I think Oregon will win the Pac-12
North and play Utah for the conference
championship. Utah will win
WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE
BULLDOGS?
Georgia is going to have another really
good team. The Bulldogs can’t be as good
defensively given the loss of five first-round
draft choices. But it still will be very, very
good. The offense needs to be a little more
explosive but the tools are there to do that.
Best tight end room in college football and
it’s not even close.
I am a big fan of Stetson Bennett IV. At the
Georgia-Florida game last fall a Bulldog fan
walked up to me and said “Tony, you know
we can’t win a national championship with
Stetson Bennett as our quarterback.” I said
“Dude, I don’t know that at all.” I spoke
to a Georgia group in June and the third
question in the Q&A was whether or not
he would last the season, even if he stayed
healthy. Stetson is one of those guys who
will always have doubters, I guess. I think
he’s a helluva football player.
DO YOU SEE OREGON STAYING
IN THE PAC-12 OR POSSIBLY
MOVING IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
If Oregon got an invitation to join the Big
Ten, the Ducks would certainly take it. But
I don’t think that invitation will be coming.
Oregon’s best bet is to stay in the Pac-12.
WHAT IS YOUR EARLY PICK FOR THE SEC
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AND THE FOUR
TEAMS IN THE CFP?
Both Georgia and Alabama will go
undefeated during the regular season and
meet for the SEC championship on Dec. 3.
Alabama will win the game. Both teams will
get into the playoff.
The four teams in the playoff will be
1--Alabama
2--Ohio State
3--Georgia
4--Clemson
Alabama beats Clemson in the Peach Bowl
Georgia beats Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.
Georgia will beat Alabama for the national
championship at SoFI Stadium in Los
Angeles.
Claude Felton
Bulldawg Illustrated continues its new series, featuring long-time UGA personalities of the Fourth Estate. There are many who are published authors along
with network television superstars. Our second installment highlights the devout devotion of Claude Felton to the University he loves and serves.
It is not uncommon for dedicated university staff members to spend
their lives affiliated with noteworthy and signature achievement,
but always underappreciated and for the most part underpaid.
They are subjected to envy and jealousy, a staple of campus tenure.
They take slings and arrows and second-guessing without complaint,
work long hours, and reside in the background while others take bows.
They are unsung heroes who give of themselves to their job and the
university’s constituency, always deflecting tribute as if it were a plague.
In addition to being great at promoting a university and its people,
they are steadfastly loyal to whom they report. Often, their most
important ability is durability. They are adept at damage control. They
are never the life of the party. In fact, they do not party at all. Partying
interferes with work. They eat lunch on the go, they keep handy a supply
of anti-acid pills as they field limitless requests. Their phone rings early
morning and late in the evening. They are always on call.
On the surface you might say that Georgia’s Claude Felton is not
underappreciated. If you ask a succession of athletic directors from Vince
Dooley to Greg McGarity to Josh Brooks about this man’s multi-talented
work and exceptional abilities, they will give him high marks. However, it
is akin to having a good wife and not knowing anything different. All too
often wives are appreciated but, nonetheless, taken for granted. Claude’s
good works have often been taken for granted.
He gives all sports teams his best and you see him everywhere,
especially when winter segues into spring when as many as ten teams
are in the heat of battle. At some point, he shows up at all competitions.
Claude’s capable staff is steadfastly loyal to this remarkable sports
information director, mainly because he doesn’t function like a boss.
Furthermore, he gives of himself. He wants his staff to get credit for
the work they do and do well. The atmosphere in his suite of offices is
as compatible as a bird singing festival on an April morning. It is low
key with a relaxed pace in which the greenest student assistant feels
comfortable gaining experience that they hope will propel them to
inspiring opportunity.
They learn the value of cogent leadership from the outset. There has
never been a temper tantrum in his office, there is no bombast to his
style, but if you get out of line, a misstep or a wrong move, it will be
addressed. He is not an enforcer but can be found “coaching up” the kids
who come to work for him. He wants them to learn and to achieve and
go on to greater things.
His protégés can be found throughout the National Football League,
Major League baseball, network television, radio, newspapers, P. R. firms,
the Olympics, the Augusta National Golf Club, the PGA Tour and World
Soccer organizations.
P. R. officers, executives and managers of the aforementioned know
that when a Georgia graduate, trained by Claude Felton, comes their
way, no retraining is required. All they need to do is suit them up and
anchor them at a desk with a computer. Perhaps, that is a bit of an
overstatement, but that is essentially the way it is.
Claude is the consummate P. R. person/publicity man. The titles for his
job have changed over the years, but Claude has been primarily devoted
to putting the best face on Georgia athletics, providing the best in
service to the media and touting the accomplishments and successes of
Bulldog coaches and athletes—the best town crier that a university could
have—without ever calling attention to himself.
He has hired competent professionals as associates and assistants—
Tim Hix, Mike Mobley, Christopher Lakos, Leland Barrow, Tray Littlefield,
Sean Stevenson, Karra Logan and Steve Colquitt for his full-time staff, and
they will fill a conversation about Claude with abundant verbal high fives.
For years, Claude has been a fixture at the Final Four and other top
NCAA competitions. He is a member of the COSIDA (College Sports
Information Directors Association) Hall of Fame and a recipient of the
COSIDA Arch Ward award. He was honored by The Football Writers
Association of America with its prestigious Bert McGrane Award.
You won’t find plaques on the wall, however. If Claude had won the
Congressional Medal of Honor, he would have to be arm twisted to go to
the presentation ceremony.
Sportswriters also give him high marks for his professionalism. He
is accommodating, he avoids confrontation, but if any member of the
media takes a shot at anybody in Bulldog clothing, Claude will defend,
with the greatest of verve, his teams, and his constituency.
A man with devout integrity, Claude is an advocate of fair play, a loyal
Dawg for all seasons. Nobody has worked longer career hours; none have
invested more time in fine tuning the image and adding to the gloss of
athletic performances for the Bulldogs since 1979.
With Georgia opening its defense of the 2021 national title Saturday in the Benz, let’s
look at some things we expect from the Dawgs based on the practices that we viewed
during Fall Camp.
College football has shifted to an offensive focus, notwithstanding the dominance of
the Bulldog defense as it paced the team to last season’s national title. Kirby Smart’s
teams will always value defense, but the 2022 campaign will see the Dawgs more
dependent on offensive production than last season due to turnover on offense after
the natty. At least, that is the opinion of most pundits.
The Bulldog offense lost some seasoned veterans to graduation and the NFL, but
this year’s unit seems primed to take up any slack left by the departures. The line has
taken shape as Fall Camp has progressed. We saw the following lineup at practice on
Wednesday, August 24 - starting with left tackle, the squad included Broderick Jones,
Xavier Truss (also saw Devin Willock take reps at left guard), Sedrick Van Pran, Tate
Ratledge, Warren McClendon.
UGA will rotate freely along the line of scrimmage to take advantage of a deep OL
room and wear down opposing defenses. Again based on that Wednesday’s practice,
the second unit line appears to consist of Austin Blaske, Truss or Willock, Warren
Ericson, Jared Wilson, and Amarius Mims. Of course, substituting entire units is rare,
and the starting five will vary based on matchups and practice performance leading up
to game day.
The offensive line may be the Dawgs’ best position group regarding returning
production and talent depth.
Tight ends! Georgia may have the top four tight ends in the nation now that Oscar
Delp is on board. Adding Delp on top of Bowers, Washington, and Gilbert is insane -
Todd Hartley is the number one TE recruiter in the country. The only question I have
about the room is, will we see UGA line up in a four tight end set during the Oregon
game, or will Todd Monken save that one for an SEC opponent?
The Stetson Bennett negativity calmed somewhat after the Bama rematch. The level
of disrespect from national outlets is still near flood stage, but I sense that Bennett is
oblivious to media rants and opinions. He knows what he can do with the ball and his
legs and maximizes his performance within that skill set. By the way, that skill set was
enough to bring the trophy back to Athens last season, and he doesn’t appear to have
forgotten how he did it. For example, during a passing drill recently, I watched him
throw three straight 40-yard TD passes to three different wide receivers, hitting each in
stride.
The receiving room guys getting the most reps with the ones are to be AD Mitchell,
Ladd McConkey and Kearis Jackson.
The running back room will have some holes to fill with the departure of Zeus and
James Cook, but plenty of talent remains with Kendall Milton, Kenny McIntosh and
Daijun Edwards leading the room.
All loans subject to credit approval.
WHAT’S
THE WORD
HAMILTON CULPEPPER
JACKSON MUSCHAMP
FAMILY AND FRIENDS FIRST FOR JUNIOR WALK-ON QB
All around the country, Jackson
Muschamp has lived. College towns
and even an NFL city, Jackson and
his family have moved place to place for
two things, football and their family. While
this young kid spent his entire life in a
locker room or on the field, the pigskin
remained glued to Jackson’s hands, no
matter the town he was living in. Now, as
a junior in college, Jackson finds himself
in Athens with his dad Will Muschamp as
his coach, the rest of his family, friends, a
national championship and, yes, football.
From a young age, Jackson knew he
wanted to play ball in college. Surrounded
by coaches, players and, of course, his dad,
Jackson had a great support staff to get
him to that level. These mentors coached
and taught him throughout his childhood
while his dad’s players were role models to
Jackson. Eventually, as Coach Muschamp
took the South Carolina head coaching job,
Jackson moved to Columbia with his family
and enrolled at Hammond High School.
Being around football paid off as Jackson
and the Skyhawks went on to win three
state titles. Jackson’s winnings also earned
him attention from some bigger schools
at the next level. With offers from Colorado
State and Boston College, he considered
the opportunity to play at either one of the
schools, but the Red and Black, his dad’s alma
mater, our beloved institution, the University
of Georgia came around with a preferred
walk-on offer, and to Athens, he came.
“Athens embraced me with open arms,”
Jackson said. “Even with my dad still coaching
at South Carolina, the people around me still
made me feel like I was home.”
Following Jackson’s freshman season, the
opportunity for Coach Muschamp to return
to Athens became a reality and the fatherson
duo was reunited. Despite coaching for
conference rivals like Florida and Auburn,
Jackson said, after putting on the Red and
Black, my dad and my family were welcomed
back to the Athens family once again.
With two years under his belt, a national
championship and a ring to show for it,
Jackson still has to face the everyday grind
on and off the field of being a student
athlete. Between football, class and a social
life, Jackson’s plate is pretty full, but with
the help of coaches, football staff and
the faculty, his busy schedule is easier to
manage than one might think.
“Everything we do is intentional and
thought out,” Jackson said. “The difference
between college and high school football
is the organization. In college, practice,
meals, classes, etc. are all structured for
us to succeed. They ultimately want us to
maximize our time for everything and help
us accomplish the goals we have set.”
To be one of the best programs in the
country, the players must be set up for
success, like Jackson said, and there is
no better success story than Jackson’s
position group, the quarterbacks. In
the quarterback room at UGA, there are
walk-ons and five stars, but Jackson said
their brotherhood, their comradery is
unlike anything else. They push each
other to get better but are best friends
through it all.
The former walk-on, sixth-year senior
Stetson Bennett leads that group, a guy
who took his opportunity and won this
football program its first national title
in 41 years. The mutual respect among
Jackson and the rest of the QBs is of the
highest and Jackson could not say enough
about Stetson and the rest of the guys in
the room. “We’re ride or die with Stetson,”
Jackson said. “We’re all behind him and
supporting him, and we think he can win
us another title.”
Though Jackson has a great fraternity of
brothers on the football team, he is also a
member of the Kappa Alpha Order here on
campus where he stays in touch with his
friends off the field. “It’s important to me
that I still have a social life while playing
football and going to class,” he said. “I
want to form and keep relationships with
people all around this campus, so it’s
important to me that I get out and meet
people and hang out with my friends and
family.” While Jackson holds football near
and dear to his heart, he keeps his friends
and family closer.
Back on the field, the Dawgs still sit atop
the mountain of college football as the
national champions, Jackson noted that it
still takes the grind to repeat. “Coach Smart
keeps telling us, ‘We have the talent to
beat anyone in the country, it just depends
on what we do with that talent,’” Jackson
said. “We know it is going to be tough if we
want to win it all again. We just have to put
our minds to it and grind everyday on and
off the field.”
The hardworking Jackson is set for big
things ahead in his life. With a last name
that means royalty in college football and
a current student-athlete at a national
championship school, Jackson’s resumé is
pretty stout; however, the young, humble
kid born in Baton Rouge doesn’t let his
head grow to the magnitude of his name
and status. He stays down to earth, grinds
at everything he works for, but most of all,
he always keeps his family and friends first.
JD’S TOP 15
— Jeff Dantzler
The season is upon us, and a handful of “Week Zero” games kicked
things off. Alabama and Ohio State are the heavy favorites to play
for the national title, with defending national champion Georgia the
consensus No. 3. The Buckeyes, Clemson and Oklahoma, all regulars
in the playoff, all missed their respective conference title tilts and are
hungry to return in 2022. Will there be some more new blood? Or will
order be restored? Enjoy the journey … the starting pistol has fired.
1. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide are loaded and
aiming for another run at a great season. Bryce
Young, the Heisman winner last year, is back to lead
the offense. Will Anderson is a standout at outside
linebacker. Alabama opens with Utah State then heads to Texas.
2. OHIO STATE - The program that has dominated
the Big Ten in the 21st century got knocked off by
Michigan last year. The talented Buckeyes are hungry
to get back to the top of the league and the CFP. Notre
Dame comes to Columbus for the opener.
3. GEORGIA - College football’s 2021 national
champions, had a record 15 players drafted, but still
returns a lot of talent. Brock Bowers and Jalen Carter are
headliners. The opener is with Oregon in Atlanta, where
the Dogs would love to play twice more this year.
4. CLEMSON - The Tigers also open in Atlanta,
tangling with the Yellow Jackets on Labor Day Night at
Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The ACC has some programs
on the rise, but Clemson still has the most talent, led by
an outstanding defensive line.
5. OREGON - The Ducks will be inside on the fast track
at Mercedes Benz for a big battle with the Bulldogs in
Atlanta. First year head coach Dan Lanning faces his
former team, and brings a fantastic offensive line and
talented defense. Bo Nix is in the QB mix.
6. NOTRE DAME - The Fighting Irish face a
challenging schedule. Notre Dame opens at Ohio State
and closes against Southern Cal in the Coliseum. Pretty
fair traditions there. Marcus Freeman has had a rapid
rise, and heads into his first full season at the helm.
7. BYU - The Cougars also have a tough slate, including
an October showdown with Notre Dame in Las Vegas,
but return a lot of talent and experience. Brigham Young
opens at South Florida, then hosts Baylor before going
to Oregon.
8. TEXAS A&M - The Aggies and Jimbo Fisher were
front and center for “talking season,” aka the offseason.
A highly touted freshman class and talented returnees
have A&M confident they can dethrone the Tide in the SEC West.
They play October 8 in T-Town.
9. SOUTHERN CAL - Lincoln Riley is the new head
coach. Caleb Williams is the new quarterback. Could
USC make a run at the PAC-12 and a playoff berth in
year one? The Trojans open against Rice and then go to
Stanford. USC and Oregon don’t play this year.
10. TENNESSEE - Expectations are ramped up for
Josh Heupel’s team heading into his second season.
The Volunteers open at Ball State then go to Pitt. The
chips will be pushed all in on September 24 when the
Gators visit Neyland Stadium.
11. OKLAHOMA - It was a staggering offseason
for the Sooners, who lost their head coach and
quarterback to USC. There were certainly some hard
feelings but Brent Venables has hit the ground running.
The Sooners are hungry to get back to the top of the Big XII.
12. UTAH - Kyle Whittingham’s Utes won the PAC-12
last season, defeating Oregon in the conference title
game, then lost a heartbreaking Rose Bowl to the
Buckeyes. They have a lot back on offense. The opener
is tough, hot and humid with Florida in The Swamp.
13. MICHIGAN - The Wolverines had a magical victory
in the snow over Ohio State and rolled Iowa for the Big
Ten crown. Michigan has a lot to replace. The schedule is
way soft in September. Can they improve, build and put
themselves into position again?
14. LSU - The Tigers last three head coaches led them
to a national championship. Now Brian Kelly takes
over. The Tigers have talent, as always. The opener is
against Florida State in New Orleans on Sunday night.
LSU goes to Auburn, Florida, the Hogs and A&M.
15. OKLAHOMA STATE - Mike Gundy’s
Cowboys were inches away from a Big XII title last
year. They’re once again amongst the favorites in
2022. The road schedule is tough, featuring trips
to Baylor and Boomer Sooner. Okie State opens with Central
Michigan.
By January 11 earlier this year, Kirby Smart was back to work
immediately to ensure there will be no let-up with his 2022 unit
The longest day of Kirby Smart’s life
came January 10 of this year. It began
in Indianapolis where the Bulldogs
won the national championship and
segued into a couple hours of sleep followed by
a press conference and a flight to Athens where
the whole town welcomed him and the team
home—all virtually a non-strop episode.
You could make a case that it was a 48-hour
day instead of 24. He slept in his own bed
Tuesday night for the first time in days, but it
was not a restful sleep.
On the flight home, he was organizing and
facilitating for the next season. He was thinking and
planning for ’22. Year ‘21, as great as it was, was in
the past. It was akin to celebrating with one hand
and planning for the next season with the other.
By noon, Jan. 11, he was fully in tune with
preparing for the next season.
That is the way it is with the Georgia head coach
who has the deepest passion for the season of
2021 not to be “one and done.” He wants another
championship. And another. And another.
He understands how challenging it is to win a
national championship but knows what it takes
to win multiple titles.
His first move was to put round the clock
recruiting back in place. Believe it or not, you
can fall behind recruiting when you win a
national championship. Just not enough time to
coach and recruit.
The Kirby modus operandi is to squeeze every
minute out of the day to make the Bulldog
program the best. He is on top of everything
and manages a mountain of details with the
greatest of efficiency and aplomb.
He never goes into any meeting without
taking time to prepare his thoughts. When
friends of Coach Ray Lamb of Commerce put
together a program designed to raise money to
create scholarship funds in Lamb’s honor, Kirby
was the keynote speaker.
Taking no more than 15 minutes, he packed
into his remarks a tribute to high school coaches
who give their best to kids in their career. That
was easy to say for him since he grew up in
a household where the patriarch was a high
school coach who spent his life doing just that.
When he speaks to the Touchdown Club of
Athens every August, he has his own verbal
power point that is illuminating and informative.
He never shoots from the hip.
Traditionally, head coaches functioned from
towers. Bobby Dodd of Georgia Tech, Bear Bryant
of Alabama, in particular, were tower aficionados
and so were most other coaches of their era.
I remember a Florida assistant coach recalling
that Ray Graves, Gator football coach who was
also the athletic director, and his basketball
coach having a verbal confrontation on Graves’
tower. Seems that the basketball coach had an
issue over his first check as an employee. He
claimed that he was being paid less that what
he and the AD had agreed on.
When Ray Perkins became the head coach at
Alabama, succeeding Bryant, Perkins, a nontower
advocate, removed the Bryant tower. That
caused a big stir, in that the tower, to those of
the Bryant era, was sacred.
Coaches today are non-tower practitioners. A
tower would cramp Kirby Smart’s style. He is a
freewheeling, peripatetic, hands-on coach. On
the sideline for games, he is a whirring dervish
who is in perpetual motion for four quarters of
football. His energy level never ceases, his love
of competition forever enduring.
If you attend a Georgia practice, you learn
right away who is in charge. Assistant coaches
have their role, and he let’s (and wants) them to
coach, but he uses the house speaker system to
ensure that practice is conducted with an edge.
The intensity is knife-cutting thick. He never lets
up; he coaches every minute of the afternoon.
There is no wasted motion. There is always
a practice plan and getting as many reps as
possible for each player is his goal. Nobody is
standing around yawning at Georgia’s practices.
The Bulldogs won the national championship
on a Monday night in Indianapolis. Tuesday
was for returning home and regrouping. By
Wednesday, he was back in focus for preparing
for ’22. The season was over. This does not
mean that he didn’t appreciate and enjoy the
championship season of 2021, but that became
yesteryear. Like the country music song of Hank
Snow, he was “moving on.”
Georgia partisans should take heart in all this,
which is an underscoring that he wants his alma
mater to enjoy a reign at the top of the college
football world.
He has a salary that makes all aware that he
is being paid to win championships, but in
truth, that would be the way it would be if his
compensation were a dollar a year. His love of
competition drives him to succeed. There will
always be that underpinning that makes him
want his alma mater to be the best across the
board and that includes the football program.
This leads to the conclusion that the Bulldog
who celebrated the winning of the national
championship the least, last January 10-11, was
the man who brought it about.
