out & about
The wildflowers are dying back to make way for mushrooms, toadstools and other
types of fungi and the leaves start to turn brown, orange, golden and red. It’s time
for some of our birds to migrate for warmer climes - our swift, swallow and osprey
to be replaced by our winter migrant’s whooper swan, goldeneye, goosander and
wigeon. The autumn is a great time to enjoy all the colours of nature, there are still
lots of beautiful things to look out for during a walk along our woodland trails. As
well as our September events listed below, we are also taking part in Renfrewshire’s
Open Doors Day on the 17th & 18th September, 10am – 4pm free entry.

Bridge Of Weir rtiutur Society
The Garden Club’s Garden Festival took place recently. We will include details next month.
Our recent GQT evening was a light-hearted, productive hour when members aimed to bamboozle the
learned panelists with their queries. Crispy twigs were blamed on the contrary weather conditions - but
remember, plants with healthy roots, which are kept moist and nurtured, are likely to recover. Whilst we save
water and store rainwater in butts, the wily gardener will use tap water on his tomatoes and avoid airborne
spores spreading to his greenhouse. Leaves with mildew should be picked off, or picked up, and placed in
the recycling bin for general waste - not garden waste where it will spread further.
We donated our heavy trestle tables to Galgael Trust in Govan. This charity aims to rehabilitate people
through projects working with wood. The trestle tables may not be
turned into boats, a recent venture, but their long history and value is
not yet over.
The Society was contacted by Emma, the Early Learning & Childcare
Officer at BoW Primary. Plans are underway there to develop a smallscale
sensory garden and Emma requested guidance on how best
the children can create a beautiful flower garden. Their aim is to
build stronger relationships within the community whilst deepening
children’s learning and understanding of their place in the world.
We visited the site, had an informal chat with Emma and ran through
the basics, reflecting the layout and aspect of the site, and will keep
in touch. We meet on the 8th September in Freeland Church Hall at
8pm. We will review the vicissitudes of this year’s growing season and
plan the Group’s next programme.
