Map attribution: ©Gillian’s WalksDifficulty: Mostly considered easyStarting Point: Neilston Train StationDistance: 5 milesArchaeological Interest - An Iron Age Fort is thought to have beenconstructed on top of the Craigie. Archaeologists believe it was probablyoccupied in later prehistory between 1200 BC and AD 400 and may havebeen reused between AD 400 and AD 700. Evidence of single earth andstone ramparts were found and it is thought that much more evidencewill be preserved below ground. In 1958 prehistoric pottery was foundalong with a fragment of worked shale. There are also remains of a rigand furrow cultivation system which suggests the area was reused in earlymedieval times. (Historic Scotland)Geology Spot - The strange shaped Craigie is thought to be a volcanicplug which is when an object or hill is created when magma cools andhardens on a vent within an active volcano.The Route - From the Train Station walk towards High Street. Once onhigh street take the second street on the left (Kirkton Road). Wander alongthis quiet lane for about 1.5km. Continue post Loanfoot Farm and reachthe Springhill Road junction. Cross the road and go through a gate into afield. Head to the gate at the bottom of the field where areas of woodlandmeet. Go over or through the gate and head east towards a fisherman’shut adjacent to Glanderston Dam. The Craigie will be ahead. Walk alongthe edge of the dam. Before you reach the road pass through a gate onthe right which takes you to the embankment beside the dam. Continuealong until you reach a footbridge over Aurs Burn. At the other side followa path alongside a row of trees. They should be on your right hand side.At the end of the row cross a wooden stile and turn left and follow a patharound the base of the Craigie. Follow the path up and take a right at afork to ascend steeply to a the summit.You are now on top of what was once an iron age fort. Take a moment tothink about all that happened here thousands of years ago and admirethe views over Glasgow and towards the Campsies in the distance.Descend the same way as you climbed until you get to the gate at thegrassy embankment. Go through the gate and turn right onto a road thenturn left to reach Glanderston Road. Walk along this road for about 450muntil it meets Springhill Road. Go right along Springhill Road for 700m orso just passing the bridge over the railway line. Take as small road parallelto the railway which meets with Springhill Road again and continue for justover a kilometreuntil you meeta roundabout.Turn right ontoKirktonfieldRoad and at theend of the roadturn left ontoMain Street.You should beable from hereto make yourway back to theTrain Station atthe start of this walk.*[*Not able to get out this month, so this route was abridged and adaptedfrom the excellent Gillians Walks www.gillianswalks.com]Kilarchn & District Beeeeper AsocitinBees like the temperature in their hive to be a constant 35degree Celsius and as long as they have access to water theycan cool the hive down. On warm summer days bees would beout collecting pollen and nectar, but in extreme heat they turntheir focus to gathering water and are well able to adapt. If thehive gets overheated, the bees will collect droplets of water andpass them on to bees in the hive. The moisture will then be spread over empty cells whilethe bees fan their wings hard and as it evaporates it cools the hive, almost like their own airconditioning.Winter preparations are also under way with bees receiving Fondant or sugar syrup toreplace the honey stores we’ve taken from them, to enable them to survive colder monthsas a colony. Cle uiriel Reinl ParWe still have some events coming up within the next month, please check outour website and social media channels for more information and how to bookfor our events.Over the last few weeks, theRanger team, the Estate teamand our volunteer groupshave been busy repairingthe path up Windy Hill atMuirshiel Country Park. Thishas involved bringing inlarge quantities of pathingmaterials across the moorlandby digger. The staff andvolunteers have then beenlaying the materials and repairing the path drainage, often in sweltering weatherconditions. The Ranger team would like to thank the visitors to the park for theirpatience while the work has been going on, and to those who thanked the staffand volunteers for their hard work.The Rangers have been seeing plenty of summer wildlife while out and aboutdoing our wildlife surveys and patrols. Dragonflies have been very noticeableduring the recent hot weather; we have been seeing plenty of the large andcolourful Common Hawkers, and the smaller and subtle Black Darters. We werealso pleased to see the family of Swallows nesting at the Muirshiel visitor centresuccessfully fledged 5 young. They have been giving great views hangingaround the centre before they set off back to Africa for the winter.We continue to deal with fire damage from disposable BBQs and with litter:we always ask visitors to remember the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, whichmeans be respectful of other Park users, the landscape and wildlife, and to leaveno trace.
