Br<strong>and</strong>y is an alcoholic beverage made from the wines or<br />

fermented mashes of other fruits are commonly identified by the<br />

specific fruit name.<br />

Cognac is a variety of br<strong>and</strong>y named after the commune of<br />

Cognac, France. It is produced in the surrounding wine-growing<br />

region in the departments of Charente <strong>and</strong> Charente-Maritime.<br />

The region <strong>and</strong> the beverage Cognac has a long history <strong>and</strong><br />

involves all kind of nations, merchants, kings <strong>and</strong> aristocrats,<br />

natural catastrophes, wars <strong>and</strong> cold winters. Despite all this,<br />

Cognac kept getting better <strong>and</strong> better, century after century.<br />

Cognac is also popular in Nordic countries - there are some<br />

quite important medium-sized Cognac players, such as Larsen,<br />

Braastad <strong>and</strong> Otard originated from Sc<strong>and</strong>inavia.<br />

Maturation time added to the label:<br />

X.O., Napoléon, Extra: at least 10 years<br />

V.S.O.P., Réserve: at least 4 years, usually 5–15 years<br />

V.S. at least 2 years, usually 3–7 years<br />
