Scotland is one of the biggest producers of whisky in the world, and
has been for at least 100 years. But while Scotland is synonymous
with whisky, it isn’t the only country to produce it. Others, such as the
USA, Ireland and Japan, also have long, proud traditions of whiskymaking.
And the last decade has seen the return of whisky distilling
to for the first time in a century, while new distilleries have also been
built in South Africa, and Sweden, Finland and Estonia among others.
There are two main types of Scotch whisky: single malt and blended.
Single malt has grown in popularity over the last decade, now
accounting for 10% of global sales of Scotch by volume. But most
Scotch whisky sold worldwide is blended. Made from a mixture of
several different malt and grain whiskies, the biggest brands of
blended Scotch, such as Johnnie Walker, Chivas, Grants and Dewars,
are household names across the globe.
Finnish whisky was first produced in 1981 at the Koskenkorva alcohol
distillery in Ilmajoki, Finland. There are currently 4 operational whisky
distilleries in Finland. Teerenpeli Distillery is the largest and one of
the oldest distilleries in Finland with the maximum capacity of 160
000 litres per year. Teerenpeli Distillery has been producing Finnish
single malt whiskies and other spirits since 2002. Teerenpeli single
malt whiskies are made with the finest malted barley and the purest
ground water. They are distilled with traditional copper pot stills from
Scotland.
