EVER WANTED to have free
coffee with a cop? The area
managed by the Lyttelton Police
Station may soon have that
opportunity.
It comes as part of Sergeant
Anna Partridge’s hopes to break
down barriers and make police
more accessible to the community.
“We’d just say we’re going
to be at this coffee shop at this
time . . . it’s just a general, lowkey
chat with the local police
that you can talk to about issues
or just want to come and meet
us,” she told Bay Harbour News.
Police would pay for the coffees.
Partridge is the first female
supervisor of the Lyttelton Police
Station, which covers around the
bays, from Port Levy to Sumner,
and Ferrymead.
In the job since mid-March,
Partridge said she enjoyed the
mix of both rural policing in
the bays and metro policing in
her area.
“It’s quite cool because the
individual little communities
have their own communities,”
she said.
$14 million
golf course
irrigation
scheme to
go ahead
DUVAUCHELLE’S new $14
million wastewater scheme
will provide treated wastewater
for irrigating the Akaroa Golf
Course.
The city council yesterday
approved the recommendation
of the Duvauchelle Treated
Wastewater Options Hearings
Panel to adopt option 1 – to
spray and drip irrigate treated
wastewater on the Akaroa Golf
Course.
Panel chair councillor Mike
Davidson said most submitters
who gave feedback during public
consultation in May supported
this option, which was also the
staff-preferred option.
“It’s taken about 12 years
to get to the point where a
recommendation can be made
with the support of all the main
parties – Ngāi Tahu and Ōnuku
Rūnanga, the Akaroa Golf Club,
and the council,” he said.
The decision supports other
work done by the city council
to stop discharging treated
wastewater into Whakaraupō-
Lyttelton Harbour and Akaroa
Harbour, Davidson said.
Orana park new home for devils
FIVE YOUNG Tasmanian devils
have taken up residence at Orana
Wildlife Park.
The arrival last week of Pendlebury,
Chester Campbell, Steele,
Fox and John brings the number of
Tasmanian devils at the park to nine,
meaning Christchurch has one of the
largest holdings of devils outside of
Australia.
The five young males were transferred
to Christchurch as part of the
Save the Tasmanian Devil (STDP)
ambassador programme.
Orana has New Zealand’s largest
Tasmanian devil habitat.
“We are thrilled to welcome the
five new boys to Orana,’’ said the
park’s exotic species manager Rachael
Mason.
“Chester Campbell is the feistiest
of the new arrivals and Fox doesn’t
lag far behind in that regard. Steele
and Pendleberry are rather mellow
treasures from the past
and John is the smallest and is quite
calm and quiet but has beautiful
long whiskers.
“It is an absolute privilege for Orana
to be involved in the ambassador
programme and raise awareness
on the plight of these magnificent
marsupials,” Mason said.
Devils are classified as endangered
mainly due to a rare contagious
cancer. The main aim of the STDP is
to ensure the survival of the species.
More improvements planned for Naval Point
MORE UPGRADES are
planned for Lyttelton’s Naval
Point, including changes to the
site’s main access road, Godley
Quay, and a waterfront upgrade
incorporating cultural elements.
Improvement works have been
under way at Naval Point since
a development plan for the area
was signed off in November
2020. Work done to date includes
the sealing a large section of
the car park, rock revetment
improvement and upgrading of
utilities.
City council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge said council
staff have been working in partnership
with Te Hapū
o Ngāti Wheke
Rāpaki on
plans for the
Naval Point
waterfront upgrade.
Andrew
Rutledge
“The upgrade
includes creating
a waterfront
walkway area
that will be painted with
designs that Te Hapū o Ngāti
Wheke Rāpaki have developed
to reflect the area’s history and
value to mana whenua,’’ he said.
A series of seats are also
proposed for the waterfront area,
as well as planters to be located
along the walkway and within
UPGRADE: This will include creating a waterfront walkway incorporating cultural designs.
the parking lot. These will also
incorporate the cultural designs.
The plan is to carry out the
work before Naval Point
hosts its inaugural SailGP
event in March.
Said Rutledge: “The paintings
on the walkway area will remain
for the event to showcase the
site’s unique cultural significance
Wednesday September 14 2022 Bay Harbour News
as the sailing is broadcast
globally to an audience of over
50 million. The proposed planter
boxes, site furniture and public
seating area have been designed
to be relocatable so they can be
moved if needed while the event
is under way.”
Material for the project,
including reused wharf timbers,
have been donated by the
Lyttelton Port Company to be
used by carvers on port land at
Naval Point.
A number of found and
donated items significant to the
site have also been identified
and will be part of wider
interpretation works linking
the cultural and heritage
setting of Naval Point with the
harbour.
The improvements to Godley
Quay will see a full upgrade of
the road, including resurfacing,
better lighting and utilities,
and construction of a shared
pedestrian and bicycle path on
the western side of the road.
This is planned to be completed
before the SailGP event.
“This project will align
with other recent pedestrian
improvements in the area,
including the upgrade at Godley
Quay and Voelas Rd which
links to Te Ana Marina, and the
connection from Te Ana Marina
into the Lyttelton township.”
No stopping restrictions are
proposed for Godley Quay, to
take effect when signs and road
markings are in place following
the road upgrade works.
Sergeant a role model for other women
• From page 1
She regularly met with various
groups to see what she and her
team could do to help.
One of the most important
parts of the job was to build
relationships, she said.
Partridge frequently stood
outside Lyttelton Primary School
while the pupils were walking in
and encouraged her team to do
the same.
“Just saying hi, just building
those partnerships and
networking, letting them know
who I am and that I’m here to
help.”
Residents might also see the
police at the farmers’ market on
the weekends they are working.
Aside from the coffee with
a cop, Partridge also hoped to
encourage accessibility by stationing
the mobile police bus in
the Ferrymead Countdown and
Mitre 10 car park and to include
the community patrol as well.
Residents would be able to
talk about how to keep their
belongings and person safe, and
to break down the barriers of
communication.
“We’re just normal people, we
just put on the blue uniform for
eight or nine hours a day,” she
said.
During Partridge’s 14 years
in the police, she worked in
negotiations for five – as part of
the Behavioural Analysis Unit
– which involved her attending
armed offenders jobs, high-risk
warrants and possible self-harm
incidents.
She was also one of the
founding members of the
Phillipstown Neighbourhood
Policing Team, which is still
running now.
During that time, she had
three daughters; aged four, six
and eight.
“Once I came back from
having my third, I was like ‘oh
what do I do,’ because I only
worked 20 hours a week and I
wanted to be a role model for
other women in the police to
show that you can be part-time,
have a family and progress your
career,” she said.
“There’s not a lot of that
around.”
All of her experiences, both
professionally and as a mother,
helped to make her a better and
more well-rounded person.
A particular issue Partridge
had made a move on was the
noisy exhausts of boy racers in
the area.
“Going up the hill and going
around the bays, the noisy
exhaust echoes,” she said.
“In town, the noisy exhaust
and boy racers gets absorbed in
all of the metro sounds, whereas
here, after seven o’clock at night,
it’s pretty quiet . . . so as soon
as one car goes up the hill with
noisy exhaust, everyone can hear
it.”
A couple of weekends ago, Partridge
and six constables worked
to target the problem.
Over the two days, they gave
out 12 green stickers, which took
those cars off the road until they
could get their exhausts modified
and certified.
They also gave out 67 infringement
notices for things such as
speed, drivers licence breaches
and rolling through stop signs.
Word also got out that police
were around, Partridge said, and
it was important to portray that.
However, they were not a 24-
hour station and although they
tried to attend as many front-line
and community jobs as they
could, they did not do night
shifts.
“Some people are probably
aware of that so probably come
out here and make the most of
that,” she said.
As the chair of the Women’s
Advisory Network for
Canterbury police, Partridge
said the job was an exciting
opportunity to pave the way for
other women.
“It’s quite cool to show other
women you can do this, you can
make your own way and make it
happen.”
SOME important relics of
Akaroa’s whaling days are being
returned to a prime spot on the
township’s waterfront.
Three whaling try pots that
date back to the early 1800s
are about to be reinstated on
Beach Rd after being carefully
restored.
The pots have been a
distinctive feature of Akaroa’s
waterfront for decades and
countless children have
clambered in and out of them
over the years.
However, years of exposure to
the corrosive sea environment
left them rusted and pitted.
In 2020, contractors working
for the city council carefully
prised the pots off their brickwork
plinth and removed them
so they could be restored.
The restoration work to protect
the pots and ensure their
longevity is now finished and the
pots are ready to be reinstated
on Beach Rd, between Church St
and Rue Jolie.
The pots will be reinstated
early this month, weather
permitting.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Try pots were originally used
by sailors sitting on ship decks,
or in whaling stations dotted
on the foreshore around New
Zealand from the 1830s, to boil
down whale blubber for use in
lamps and soap.
The pots were usually organised
in a “nest’’, with a fire lit
underneath.
The shore-whaling era on
Banks Peninsula ended about
1850.
All three of the pots in Akaroa
came from local whaling
stations.
Putting wastewater into harbour ‘inappropriate’
• From page 1
“These wastewater systems
were set up many years ago,
and attitudes around culture
and environment have
changed – a harbour
discharge is not
something we consider
to be appropriate today,”
Davidson said.
Water is a precious
resource on Banks
Peninsula, which has long
dry spells in summer.
Davidson said the city
council hopes central
government will develop
regulations and standards to
allow treated wastewater to be
Mike
Davidson
more widely used for irrigation,
including for residential use –
garden watering, car washing
and the like.
“As climate change
progresses, it will
become a no-brainer
to recycle and reuse
treated wastewater
so that there is less
demand on drinking
water,” he said.
“It’s an additional
water resource we can
use, rather than using
drinking water for
non-drinking purposes.”
The project team will now
complete more detailed
design work in preparation for
submitting a resource consent
application.
The resource consent process
includes an assessment of
environmental effects,
including effects on neighbours.
The city council has budgeted
$14.4 million for the Duvauchelle
project.
A similar $74-million project
is under way to use treated
wastewater from Akaroa to
irrigate new plantings of native
trees.
The resource consent
application for the Akaroa
project is being prepared for
submission.
GO-AHEAD: Duvauchelle’s new $14 million wastewater
scheme will provide treated wastewater for irrigating the
Akaroa Golf Course.
STREET ART: Mark Catley with paste ups on Madras St. Right – a Batman and Yoda paste up by Catley, and a Catley paste up on Colombo St.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Paste ups a platform for pop culture
• By Geoff Sloan
ARTISTS ARE finding new
ways to express themselves,
increasingly taking to the streets
with rolls of paper and buckets
of glue.
“Paste up” art is fast gaining
popularity as Ewoks,
stormtroopers and even
David Bowie pop up on the
walls of derelict buildings in
Christchurch. The city is well
known for its street art scene, but
it’s normally the big murals that
get the attention.
However, a growing number
of artists are keeping busy
creating smaller, and often more
thoughtful and intricate paste
up art works.
Mark Catley uses his love of
pop culture to inspire his art.
“I love all the street art out
there, but a lot of it, it’s not for
me. So I just thought, what do I
want to see on the wall? And I
thought, well, how about a lifesize
stormtrooper.”
He says paste ups are one of
urban art’s most enduring forms,
offering social commentary in
the form of analogue memes,
giant toys or collaged surrealism.
A central city bollard has been
transformed into an installation
platform for paste up art, thanks
to support from Phantom Billstickers
and the city council’s
Enliven Places Project Fund.
Catley is among the artists
invited to exhibit and wants suggestions
from the public about
what they’d like to see.
He is calling for pictures of
people’s old toys and can be
Keeping up to date
with your vaccinations
is really important,
even if you’ve already
had COVID-19.
You can catch COVID-19 more than once. Boosters
help protect you from getting very sick from COVID-19,
ending up in hospital, and even death.
Keeping up to date with your vaccinations is one of the most important things
you can do to help protect yourself, your whānau and your community.
A booster will provide extra protection from a previous vaccination and
help your immunity be stronger and last longer. And, by staying as healthy
as you can, you help reduce pressure on our communities, businesses and
the health sector.
If you’ve had COVID-19, you can get your booster three months after you
tested positive. Make sure you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
SPORT
IN 1849, Her Majesty’s Paddle
Steamer Acheron, with Captain
John Lort Stokes at the helm,
was the first steam-powered ship
to make port in Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour.
A barque rigged, paddle wheel
sloop with a 170-horsepower engine,
displacing 722 tons, she was
launched at Sheerness, Kent UK,
in 1838. At 150ft (46m) long with
a 33ft (10m) beam, the Acheron
carried five guns and a crew of
100, including 13 marines and
13 firemen. Originally built to
run the mail from Marseilles
and Malta, she was put to service
for the British Admiralty as a
surveying ship and dispatched
to the Crown’s New Zealand
colony to chart the coastline and
harbours of its new South Island
acquisitions, arriving at Auckland
in November 1848.
Captain Stokes had previously
served as a Lieutenant on HMS
Beagle during its three historic
voyages, including the second
voyage with the young Charles
Darwin, and the third voyage
as surveyor of the western and
northern Australian coastlines
from 1837-43, during which
Stokes was promoted to Captain.
Trained in the most modern
techniques of hydrographic
Ferrymead
survey, Stokes refined the measurement
of longitude and helped
set a new standard for mapping
accuracy. His subsequent mission
to New Zealand waters,
with a complement of surveyors,
draughtsmen and geological
and biological scientists, would
significantly add to the scientific
knowledge of the colony’s South
Island, as well as update its old
maritime charts that were still
largely based on Cook’s surveys.
A world in chaos. Two very different women. And the mystery of the man who
Belinda Alexandra.
Paris 1946: Sabine Brouillette is a war crimes investigator with the French secret
service. She lost her family, including her young son, when her Resistance circuit
was betrayed near the end of the war. New evidence comes to light that the
traitor was a British double agent who went by the codename ‘the Black Fox’.
Now her quest for revenge has a single focus: find the Black Fox and kill him.
Sydney 1946: Landscape designer Diana White has been waiting six years for
her husband, Casper, to return from the war in Europe. Her son, Freddy, was
only a baby when his British-born father joined the RAF. But Casper is a changed
man when he returns from the convalescent hospital in England where he has
spent the past year under mysterious circumstances. No longer the easygoing
personality Diana fell in love with, he is now darker and more secretive.
Soon Sabine and Diana find themselves on a collision course - one seeking
vengeance, the other willing to go to any lengths to protect her family.
HMPS Acheron
From Auckland, the Acheron
steamed on to Akaroa in February
1849 to survey the Banks
Peninsula, calling in at what
was then known as Port Cooper
(Lyttelton) where Captain Stokes
surveyed the harbour and the
surrounding bays. While in
Whakaraupō, crew members
of the Acheron were dispatched
inland to establish survey points
for the Canterbury Association.
Riccarton and then travelled
north to Maukatere Mount
Grey, where he viewed the wide
sweep of the newly acquired
Canterbury Plains. He then
The Acheron would steam on
for another two years collecting
a wealth of scientific data and
completing a hydrographic
survey of coasts and harbours
from the Cook Strait and Nelson
to Otago and the Fouveaux
Strait. From there she sailed
around to chart the Milford
Sound and up along the west
coast to a ‘stupendous mountain’
that Stokes himself named Mt
Cook (now Aoraki).
Following a survey of Queen
Charlotte Sound the Acheron
left New Zealand waters in
March 1851, returning to
Britain to be replaced by HMS
Pandora under Commander
Byron Drury, completing the
full survey of the South Island
coastline in 1855. The surveys
were deposited with the British
Admiralty, with the new charts
being published from 1856 on.
The Acheron/Pandora survey
fully modernised travel around
and thus communication within
Her Majesty’s newest colonial
settlements on the South Island,
with the survey remaining the
basis for all subsequent New
Zealand maritime charts for the
next century.
Phil Mauger Standing for Christchurch Mayor
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I am running for Mayor because I want to
regain people’s trust in Council and get stuff
done.
With only 42% of residents having faith in
what we do, this has got to be turned
around.
I have lived in Christchurch all my life
working in our contracting business,
building subdivisions and infrastructure all
over the city. I have resigned from the
business to focus on running for Mayor.
My wife Chrissy and I have five children and
nine grandchildren between us. I am the
current Councillor for Burwood. I enjoy this
role, but I can see how we can make things
better and take Christchurch forward and
make it a city that our kids and grandkids
want to live in and return to.
I have six policy platforms that if elected
Mayor I will be promoting and actively
supporting:
• Keep rates affordable and reduce debt
• Regain ratepayers’ confidence in the
Council
• Finish our roads and footpaths
• Deliver core services better
• Make Christchurch an even better place
to live
• Look after our Environment
Council needs to regain your trust and listen
to the community. I will work hard to do that.
We need to listen to your concerns and
together we need to make Christchurch the
best city to work, live, play and invest in.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I’m standing for Mayor because I truly
believe in the potential of Christchurch - but
we need experienced, transparent and
collaborative leadership to make it a reality.
We need to move beyond petty, partisan,
politics, for the good of our city.
The top issue that I’m hearing and seeing is
a lack of trust and confidence in the Council
itself. In a recent poll, only 42% of 7,038
residents were satisfied with the Council’s
performance; the lowest satisfaction level in
15 years. This needs to be addressed, as a
matter of urgency - and it requires open,
transparent and experienced leadership to
do so.
I was the CEO of the Canterbury District
Health Board (CDHB) from 2009 to 2020,
directly responsible for 12,000 direct
employees and working in partnership
with a further 9,000 health professionals in
the community. Now is the time to use my
experience, and collaborative approach to
working with residents, to make our place
New Zealand’s most attractive and vibrant
city.
Collaboration is key for me – not just
listening to and engaging with our people,
but also ensuring Council works actively
with the arts community, with business, with
tangata whenua, with our rangatahi (young
people), with universities and social
enterprises.
We have a range of ‘big picture’ issues that
we need to grapple with as a city - climate
change, housing challenges, transport and
connectedness, to name a few – together
we can do so much more.
I look forward to working with you as Mayor
to become a truly 21st Century city where
innovation and connectedness thrives.
I promise that I will listen, lead and get
results.
Strong Communities: Sustainable Future.
As your local councillor I have been active,
open and accessible in our many communities.
I have consistently pushed for greater
investment in our water infrastructure and have
advocated for safe and sustainable transport
options such as the Coastal Pathway, for our
natural environment and to empower
community groups.
Flood protection measures we have put in place
since the major floods in 2014 are paying off
and our earthquake damaged community
facilities are almost all rebuilt, with just a couple
to go.
A mayor is the democratically elected icon
or face of the city, both to its citizens and to
the world. Only resourceful and well-known
individuals with a lengthy record of public
service, influence on public affairs and
independence from personal pressure, can
in good faith stand for the office of Mayor of
Christchurch.
My position on social and cultural matters
has been clearly expressed in my public
actions and publications over the past fifty
years. I make no secret of the fact that I
share the good taste, aspirations and
remarkable achievements of the Romantic
We have had an increased focus on waterway
health and biodiversity this term and are
working in partnership with many community
groups on these across our ward and the city.
Transparency has also improved with only 5%
of reports now in public excluded, down from
35% in 2018.
We’ve faced many challenges as a city and
worked together to overcome them. Let’s work
together to face up to climate change; to lower
our emissions, enhance our waterways and
increase biodiversity. Let’s put people at the
As an elected representative I have a proven
track record representing residents. I ask the
hard questions, seek accountability and get
the answers on your behalf. I will rock
council's boat.
This is a defining election. The proposed
Three Waters process is fatally flawed. The
reform is right but the method is wrong. I do
not support the medium density housing
change rules as public feedback has been
overwhelmingly negative from residents'
groups across Christchurch. It is concerning
Neo-Gothic founders of this special city.
I am respected by those who love
Christchurch and have for years stood
beside those protesters who have tried to
stop that dream being destroyed for money
or power.
As part of my heritage as a proud British
subject and New Zealand citizen I despise
racism especially when it is disguised as
antiracism that is increasingly used as a tool
to help ambitious politicians and
businessmen to gain their objectives.
Ask yourselves this question. What other
mayoral candidate will make any substantial
coastal and low-lying communities through the
adaptation process.
As chair of Council’s Sustainability and
Community Resilience Committee and a
years of history on my mother’s side and
100 on my father’s side.
I am passionate about the Peninsula, it's
biodiversity, it's history and unique
geography.
It is a great place to live and a special place
to visit.
I am back living in Akaroa after 30 years in
senior management roles within the printing
industry. I am a trained negotiator and was a
paid speaker at various dinners and
luncheons around the country presenting on
operational excellence. In 2004 my Site in
Christchurch won an award out of 201 sites
worldwide it was judged on the criteria
health and safety, community and
environmental engagement, the prize
money we won I gave to Peninsula projects,
Hinewai reserve and the Banks Peninsula
Conservation Trust. In 2009, when the Tui
Project was undertaken, I sponsored 5 of
the Tuis getting the schools to name and
follow.
On clean-up Christchurch days, I would take
some of my staff to Cass and Corsair Bays
to collect and dispose of rubbish from
around the beaches.
I bring a lot of experience to the role and
with spending the last term on the
Community Board I believe I have a proven
record of strong advocacy. I am a ‘can do’
person and not a career politician. I will fight
hard for the aspirations of all communities
on the Peninsula.
Our communities are facing challenges
and change. Our response will define us.
As a pragmatic independent, I'm solutions
focused - not politically driven.
Working together as a community is where
we draw strength. I'm ready to lead that
effort.
You've told me that we need modern
infrastructure that works; clean water to
drink, money must be spent smarter, and
Banks Peninsula needs to receive its fair
share. I will provide a strong focus on the
practical everyday realities. The things that
really matter.
My management background in banking and
engineering has equipped me well with the
skills to work for you.
I currently serve with Rotary, the Cressy
Trust, and St John.
I'm here for our community.
I was born and bred in Banks Peninsula and
it's where I live with my family. The
Peninsula, its people and its uniqueness runs
through my veins.
I am critically aware of the pressure our land
is under from climate change and it needs a
strong voice to protect it.
To be sustainable is not enough, we need to
focus on regeneration.
It would be an honour to serve as your
councillor.
Together we can do great things.
It is such an honour to represent the
community over the last six years as the
community board representative and the
last three as chair person.
Banks Peninsula has such diverse
communities full of incredibly passionate
people. We all love the peninsula for a
wide variety of reasons, our access to the
water, natural flora and fauna, the people
that help make up our tight knit
communities, and the lifestyle we choose
to live. Whatever the reason, we are
different and we are special. That is why I
am wanting to become Councilor for
Banks Peninsula.
I want to see council put their
environmental impact on the top of the list,
when looking at any project or priority, just
like they do with financial cost and
community benefits. Community resilience
is important, because with these ever
increasing weather events/extremes we
need to be able to thrive in our
communities, not just survive.
Spending in council needs to be smart.
We needs our roads, water infrastructure
and green space to be maintained, but we
can not over burden the community with
high rates rises to do so.
Tourism does have an effect on our
community, that is why the Destination
Management Plan needs to be delivered,
so we can get the benefits and manage
the negative impacts.
I have a great understanding of the issues
the peninsula is facing and I can work with
anyone around the table for the best
outcome for Bank Peninsula and the city.
Kia ora koutou.
I have a long-term interest in sustainability and
a great love of Lyttelton Ōhinehou and its
environs, having lived here for 32 years. Over
this time, I have had various community roles
including Trustee and Chair of Lyttelton West
School Board, President of Lyttelton Plunket,
President of Lyttelton Tennis Club and member
of the Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Mt Herbert
Coastal Panel. I have also volunteered at the
Information Centre, currently deliver meals for
Lyttelton Community House and am involved
with Predator Free Lyttelton.
I work part-time as a Lecturer at the University
of Canterbury in the School of Earth and
Environment. I previously worked as a town
planner for over 20 years for various councils
and as a consultant. Consequently, I have very
good knowledge of Council processes and the
Resource Management Act. I am also a
cycling advocate and supporter of sustainable
transport, which was the subject of my PhD.
The most important issue for Council to
address is the effect of climate change on our
communities and infrastructure. In addition,
issues such as the completion of the Naval
Point development, the redevelopment of
Lyttelton and the completion of Akaroa’s new
wastewater disposal system are important.
I’m running for the Community Board because
I care about my community and the
environment; I’m interested in the issues the
Board has to consider; and I think I have the
necessary knowledge and experience to do a
great job.
I would welcome the opportunity to represent
and work for our community.
I love Lyttelton and I’ve really enjoyed my
first term on the Community Board.
We’ve worked to get the Naval Point
development started, supported local
community groups, improved our bus
services and increased safety around
Lyttelton.
That said, there is still more to do.
My background involves producing
children’s TV shows like What Now,
Fanimals and Brain Busters. I work with
children and animals every day and I love it.
My television industry experience has given
me skills to organise and collaborate with a
diverse mix of people.
I know from talking with other Lyttelton
and Harbour residents that repairs to our
roads and water infrastructure, protecting
our local pool and library hours and acting
now to address the challenges of climate
change, are the most important issues in
our community.
We need to work collaboratively, with strong
representation on our Community Board
to address our current challenges and be
prepared for the future together.
I’m asking for your support to represent
you and our community.
Working together can go a long way to
I have lived in Rapaki for much of my life,
Te Pātaka-o-Rākaihautū/Banks Peninsula is
very much a part of my DNA – it is where we
gather our kai, welcome our manuhiri, raise
our children, and bury our loved ones.
Over the years, our home - and its’ people -
have witnessed significant change,
demands on our environment, our
Improving the quality of our environment,
whilst building sustainable infrastructure to
support our needs, is a priority.
Ensuring that our roads are well maintained
and safe is absolutely vital as we move
towards our future.
The Peninsula, and its’ people, have always
been unique - it’s a place where you are
welcomed, regardless of who you are or
where you come from.
– let’s work together to protect it.
I’m four generations into my family’s
commitment to Banks Peninsula, which
makes us relative newcomers by local
standards. I have worked hard on our
Community Board over two terms to value
our environment, strengthen our partnership
with hapū, honour our heritage, and fight for
core infrastructure and services.
I will continue to support the things that help
us build prosperous communities and
prepare us for the challenges of climate
change. The journey to being New
Zealand’s first zerocarbon city is one we
need to be on, and Banks Peninsula is
home to many special people who are
leading the way. Every day they are working
towards the restoration of native forest,
increasing biodiversity, and working to
protect our harbours and waterways, and
we must resource them to keep on doing
that.
After a decade working as an analyst in
London’s financial district, I gained a
master’s degree in social work, supporting
our most vulnerable young people and their
families.
These experiences have taught me to
deliver under pressure in tough situations
and build rewarding relationships with
people from all walks of life, which will serve
me well on our Council. I am married with
two teenage children, and they’re pretty
decent taskmasters so hopefully I’m in good
shape.
There is so much knowledge in our Banks
Peninsula communities. I pledge to listen to
and learn from you to protect our
and special character and give it everything
fighting for what our Peninsula needs and
deserves.
I’m running because of concerns about our
deteriorating environment. I want to see a
council that will work hard to address this.
We are seeing more large floods and
droughts as climate change continues, and
we must deal with these and also cutting our
carbon emissions. Our water quality is
dropping, our productive soils are
disappearing, as is much of our biodiversity,
and research indicates that many
Christchurch residents die prematurely
because of air pollution. We need to set a
clear path to turn this around.
Our public transport system is an important
part of cutting our carbon emissions and
needs collaboration between a number of
organisations to get more people using it on
a daily basis. Our regional policies need to
have measures that will protect our climate
and soils, and lower the nitrates and
sediment in our water.
My background: I’ve worked in conservation
and on farms in very practical, on-theground
jobs. I completed a PhD at Lincoln
University and have worked as a research
scientist. I run a small research business
and also work in community development in
Addington. I led the setup of the Halswell
Community Project and now chair their
committee. I’ve helped campaign for active
transport in our city, volunteered in a range
of environmental groups and learned the
benefits of teamwork for achieving
outcomes.
Who am I?
I’m a geologist with a Masters in Water
Resource Management and 15 years
experience in the environmental sector.
As your regional councillor this term I
supported: expanding the Enviroschools
programme; access to the bus for a child
fare for all 18 year olds and tertiary students;
extended free-period on the bus for Gold Card
holders; and increased contestable funding for
community-led environmental projects.
Why should you vote for me?
If re-elected, I will continue to focus on climate
change and loss of our natural environment:
- Our rivers and aquifers need urgent
attention. Sediment and heavy metals are
polluting our urban rivers and harbours.
Agricultural inputs are causing algal blooms
and poor quality drinking water. I will push
for tighter regulation, more education and
innovation, monitoring and enforcement.
- Let’s protect, enhance and connect the green
spaces through the city to the hills and the
Peninsula to provide for wildlife and wellbeing. I
will advocate for greater collaboration with
environmental organisations with a proven track
record in delivering biodiversity improvements
with the community and landowners.
- More frequent, reliable and better connected
public transport for communities as well as
commuters is essential if we are to reduce our
car dependence. I will work constructively to
speed up delivery and increase central
government investment.
I will listen to understand your priorities. I will
give a voice to future generations. Vote for
positive change.
series
Coastal Flair and Finesse
22 Marama Crescent, Mount Pleasant
3 bedrooms, 2 living, 2 bathrooms, 3 toilets, 2 car garaging
Premier positioning and a picturesque perspective are just a couple of the drawcards
to this premium residence, which reflects spectacular family living on the prized lower
slopes of Mt Pleasant.
Engineered and designed to a superior standard in 2013, wide-scale glazing is a
prominent feature of the build and showcases the exquisite panoramic views over the
estuary, sea, city, Alps, Kaikoura’s and upwards to Castle Rock.
Covering approx 300sqm including the main balcony over two family-focused floors,
the entry-level is the primary setting for everyday living. The elegantly appointed
kitchen, dining, and living extend outdoors to the hardwood deck framed by glass
balustrades, ensuring an unimpeded outlook from every angle. Also on this level is the
main bedroom with its ensuite, WIR and own deck access.
The ground floor is well-suited to teens and guests, boasting another living, two double
bedrooms and family-sized bathroom.
Spanning approx. 868sqm, the section benefits from established plantings that deliver
peace and privacy, with the internal access double garage offering another advantage.
The estate has issued a clear directive to sell, and buyers are advised to act with haste.
