Increased quotas for skilled foreign workers
The COVID-19 pandemic caused the world to remain silent for a good two years. This was also the case in Australia,
where the country's borders were closed, and immigration was reduced by 15%. Now the unemployment rate in
Australia is at 3.4%, the lowest it has been in 50 years.
As is well known, Australia is competing with Canada and Germany, for example, to attract skilled workers from all
over the world. The Prime Minister announced the fight against short-stayers and remote workers. He now wants to
attract long-stayers to build a life, buy property, and settle permanently in Australia. As a result, the government
increased quotas for skilled international workers by 35’000 to a total of 195’000 for the next 12 months.
About one million work permit applications from potential employees are still pending. Therefore, the government
wants to add 500 staff members to speed up the processing of the work permits, which will require an additional
expense of about AUD 36.1 million (about CHF 34.8 million).

Erhöhung der Kontingente für qualifizierte
ausländische Fachkräfte
Die Covid-19 Pandemie liess die Welt für gut 2 Jahre stillstehen. So auch in Australien, wo die Landesgrenzen
geschlossen und die Einwanderung um 15% gesenkt wurde. Nun ist die Arbeitslosenquote in Australien mit 3.4% so
niedrig wie seit 50 Jahren nicht mehr.
Wie bekannt, konkurriert Australien etwa mit Kanada und Deutschland um qualifizierte Fachkräfte aus der ganzen
Welt. Der australische Premierminister kündigte den Kampf gegen Kurzaufenthalter und Fernarbeiter («Remote
Work») an und möchte nun Langaufenthalter anziehen, die sich in Australien ein Leben aufbauen, Immobilien
kaufen und sich dauerhaft etablieren. Somit erhöhte die Regierung die Kontingente für qualifizierte Fachkräfte aus
der ganzen Welt um 35'000 auf insgesamt 195'000 für die nächsten 12 Monate.
Etwa eine Million Arbeitsbewilligungsgesuche von potenziellen Mitarbeitern sind immer noch hängig. Hierfür
möchte die Regierung 500 Stellen aufstocken, um die Bearbeitung voranzubringen, was einen Mehraufwand von
etwa 36.1 Millionen AUD (ca. 34.8 Millionen CHF) bedeutet.
